65 years ago (1956-57), my dad was stationed at the Army airfield in Bindlach. The tall building on the left was family housing. We lived in that very building on the first floor, corner. I turned 5 April1956, and rode my Anchor two wheel German bike on the driveway between the buildings for the first time. I eventually rode all over the base. Attended the kindergarten & elementary school on base. They met in different buildings. The Enlisted barracks was near where we lived. We would rummage through the trash and find military patches from the tailor shop. In the winter, the snow plow piled up snow at the end of the driveway. At that time there were no buildings beyond the end of the drive, just a fence and open field. Had fun sledding down the snow pile. One day we watched some German workers digging in a ditch along the road (which led to one of the original entrances to the base, toward the right). One of the workers was using a handheld torch, and the fuel spilled and he caught his hand on fire. He shook it out, but his surprised reaction amused us. Between the two entrances to the base, there was a low stone wall. Possibly one shown in your video. We dug for bullet heads at the base of the wall. Possibly pointed 9mm. I was aware of Nazi activity during the war. My dad told us a lot, and how Hitler came to Bayreuth for the opera. I wondered if the bullet heads were evidence of something nefarious at the stone wall. There were bombed out buildings on the west end of the base. I recall crawling around in the debris looking for Nazi insignia on dishes. Never found any with Nazi symbols, just German trade marks. The buildings have been removed or covered up. My dad took me up in his L-19 Birddog one time, will never forget that. His job was to fly along the West German border during this period of the cold war. Wonderful memories. Thanks for the video.

I lived there from 88-91 and that’s the housing area with the balconies on them. When I lived there there were about 8 buildings with the stairwells. Across the street were the 4 plex with covered parking. Across from there was the barracks and the mailroom. I lived in the fourplex and could look at the commissary out of my back door and the dentac out of my front door.

I also want to add that I worked at the daycare center that was there and we brought the children up to the wall and painted it with flags and yellow ribbons etc to welcome the troops back from Desert Storm. I have fond memories of that place.

I have the wall and the artwork in one of the Bindlach videos. As you can imagine, it's become quite faded over the years.

what a memory trip back to 1952 when my future husband (ret CSM) was stationed there, having been stationed with the 2d AC in Auagsburg prior to his trf. Even though this video is my first glimpse of Christensen Barracks (we lived in Bayreuth) as my husband never took me there. I wonder if they were only barracks at the time and when did they start a housing are. I do not remember too much except having fond memories of that time in my live and just hearing about Bindlach brought them back. and right now, looking back at good times seems to be comforting compared to the relative seclusion and restrictions we must live with right now. Respectfully J. Babbie

48 years ago come June I was assigned to this base nothing at all in your video looks familiar to me, although it has been close to 50 years since I was stationed there I do remember the barracks the mess hall since I was in company B, the helicopter squadron that was there at the time, and the long walk done to the motor pool where most of the service was done on the vehicles, we were a border patrol unit at that time going to camp Gates and Wieland at the time although my memories of these places have faded some, I may still have some pictures of the base if you are interseted, I heard the base was closed in the early '90's I served there from june of 73 to jan of 73

Yep thats family housing , the only really recognizable structures remaining from the old but just modernized and very heavily armed 2nd ACR days when it was Christensen Barracks, a few other areas like HQ BLDG, the prior gym/library/photolab structure and at least one of the prior combat track vehicle parks more evident from Google maps overhead view. I still often recollect those young fit soldiers i worked with, never complained, they were tough and ready but the thing i remember the most were their ready smiles, great dedicated soldiers and handsome young men in their 20s, little wonder the German girls were so fond of them!

I was there a brat 70-74. There were five of those buildings in a row with the grade school at the end. We lived in apt D 1 which is first on bottom floor. Looks like in the plain building exactly. There was a hole under the fence we slid out to explore the countryside. Found a cliff where trash was dumped. There was a cave where an underground airport once lived and an abandoned tank in a field we used to play in. Also played in the tank and half tracks on the parade field by the airstrip. Went there at 8 yes old so I remember stuff well. Year after we left my 4th grade teacher Mr Vas was murdered I found for supposedly something to do with a child. We had constant terrorist threats, get outta the school, dogs sniffing. It was a cia hotbed. Troops did tank moves a lot and run and cover border patrols. Gypsies camped near there, Czech border we had guns on us where the road looped thru that country, dad stopped to take pics and they were in the tower aiming at us. We bailed and left em rubber samples all the way back to Germany. Many many memories besides!👍🇺🇸 I went Army and revisited a closed christianson barracks in 85 with dad.
