I need to take part 3 over incase I need to move out of Florida. It’s been 10 years since I took these tests. What study materials do you recommend. I feel like I need to refresh on all the small details of the procedures and injections i never had to do

Hi Jennifer! If you’re just talking about Part 3, which is the “performance exam” where you practice doing an eye exam on a patient in front of proctors, there are no study materials because it is simply doing refraction, slit lamp etc. With that said, in the description of my video I have a link to a document I made of a “sample script” that you can follow while you practice for Part 3. I hope that helps!

How did you approach the lightning situation for examining pupils under dim illumination?

Hey Lacie, good question! Ok so for pupils you first measure the pupil size in normal light (don’t need a trans illuminator for this), then you would turn off/dim the lights a lot. If they have blue/green eyes you may be able to measure with the ruler, but chances are they have darker eyes and you can’t see the pupil, so a transilluminator IS needed. But you dont wanna turn it on and shine it directly to their eyes at a few inches away because of course that will elicit a pupil response. So what I did (and what I learned in school) is you turn on the transilluminator but you hold it from around where your hips are, and you try to aim the light for their cheek. With the light being far away and not directly aimed at the eye, you will usually get enough light to see the pupils without making them constrict much, so you can measure with the ruler. If you STILL can’t see the pupil, then (while still holding the transilluminator at near your hips) you could quickly move the light up to the eyes just for like a second or less so you can see the pupil. If it’s not enough time for you to see the pupil, you could shine to and away from the pupil in a quick motion multiple times while holding the ruler near the pupil and you should be able to get a good estimate. But honestly, even if you were to shine the light directly at the eyes, the fact that the transilluminator is so far away and the light is minimal, the pupil will still be more dilated than in the light so you should get a good dim pupil size. If you’re like 0.5mm or maybe 1mm off, I wouldn’t imagine you would get docked by too many points. Just the fact that you’re making an effort to not elicit a pupil response by holding the light far away and not shining the pupils too hard should be a good indicator to the proctor that you understand the nature of the test. Does that make sense?

Do you think appealing my part 3 score is worth it?

Difficult question. As I said in the video, it depends on how confident you feel about your performance. If you feel like 100% you should have passed, then maybe. If not sure, then I would try again. Appealing has worked for my friend, but I know others where it didn’t work. It’s a gamble
