Honestly wild to me. Even teaching one class it feels low bc if you were teaching 4 courses at that rate it still be around 65k for a highly educated profession.
From a financial standpoint, yes it is sad. Some people love teaching though and don't do it because they think they will be rich. Still though, I agree. For people so educated, the pay should be more.
Why is it that professors get paid so little? I am beyond excited to teach my first upper division course this summer, but the pay is less than what I’ve made as a TA for some courses. At the same time, academia is so incredibly competitive - so you really gotta love it but damn, some days industry really sounds nice.
Sorry to hear the pay is low. So true though. The pay is low and the work is hard and getting a tenured role just continues to get harder. Industry is nice and has been rewarding for me! Never too late to consider it.
Depends where you live. In my county in California adjunct part time professors are paid $60/hr. I’m a high school teacher getting my masters to teach at community colleges
@@Dom-pi1gj per lecture hour? Or does it take into account prep time? If it’s the former, that is pretty low. But in any case yes, adjunct instructors can make decent money. Personally I’d prefer a tenure track position that allows me to also do research. But it’s extremely competitive, making applicants have to apply in places all over the country, and even then, pay just isn’t good for how much work a doctoral program is, at least not starting out. It requires a lot of intrinsic motivation.
@@Quadruple_curious lecture and office hours. Not sure if you’re a teacher but I am. As a High School teacher we don’t get paid for any prep time. Only paid for our 7 hour work day. If you work off the clock to grade or do other things then that’s on you. Teaching is all budgeting time.
@@Dom-pi1gj I’m a PhD student and I teach college classes, but professors at universities don’t just teach. There’s quite a big difference in community college teaching or adjunct teaching, which is just teaching, vs what is expected at a university. Getting paid per lecture hour isn’t something that quite applies to the latter, since you’re still expected to do research, publish, mentor, serve on committees, etc. Teaching is only a third of the responsibilities or less. Which is why 60 an hour would be extremely low, and doing 7 hours a day would be pretty impossible.
I've been an adjunct professor with this kind of pay of 55.74 dollars per hour. My response was to see my employer as my enemy. My solution was to teach exactly the same course at four different institutions i.e. 24 hours per week. After one term there was no preparation time. All exams at each institution were identical. Exams were designed so each multiply choice exam could be corrected in three minutes. I pretended to teach, my students pretended to learn. The bottom line for my institution was money. The bottom line for me was money. Stop dreaming, welcome to America.

Hello, I am looking to interview adjunct faculty who teach at either community or 4 year institutions about their experiences and perceptions of collegiality. I am looking for participants for the field testing phase (3-4 people). Would you be interested in sharing your experience? I do have a formal proposal and recruitment flyer written and approved from my institution. This is for completion of my Phd in Psychology at Grand Canyon University. I would appreciate the opportunity to talk with you, and would also like you to share the recruitment link and flyer broadly. Thank you for considering!
I haven't taught in two years. I doubt I will have answers to your questions. But why are you a volunteer and not getting paid? That should be illegal.
This is so sad. I’m an undergraduate college student and I’ve worked summer internships that pays the same hourly rate as your adjunct professor role, despite me knowing way less than you by far… This is wrong, you should be paid much more!!!
It is sad. But for those who absolutely love to teach, they may make it work by getting multiple adjunct teaching roles (I knew a woman who taught at 3 or 4 other colleges!) or like I was at the time in the video, they may have a full-time job and then adjunct teaching is supplemental income.
My goodness that's even lower than I thought and I didn't have high expectations to begin with. Just wow. Welcome to the USA, where students need to take out a loan to attend university while the people teaching them can't afford 3 meals a day, forget about rent or mortgage
In all fairness, if you can get a full-time professor position at a large university, then salaries can be good. This type of salary - and also where you work without benefits - is common for adjuncts. Which is why I mentioned in the video that is this was my ONLY income, I would be in deep trouble. And some people do get in deep trouble if this is their only income.
Hello professor i got an offer of $5000 per class taught. Dates will be from feb 26 to july 12 2024. I just wanna is if that $5000 usd, is that the payment for those 5months or iam getting $5000 a month? Iam sorry iam new to this. Thank u.
I guess they exist if someone is saying it on Google...most professors I know are not millionaires. Maybe if they invented something and are getting paid royalties or licensing fees, that is possible. But that is not a lot of professors.
Yep. But like I said in the video, this was for one class. But in the grand scheme of things, it's still fairly low for someone with years of specialized training.
Hi - I don't teach anymore. And I do mention how much I made per month in the video - around $1200 per month for teaching one 4 credit class. I spent around 10 hours per week prepping, grading, and teaching. Thus, the hourly rate ends up being very low for your time.

Oof that's worse than what they pay grad students.
Sad and true.

??? That’s crazy only $1300
For teaching one class. Yes, that was it. Some overcome this problem by teaching at multiple community colleges though.
That doesn't even cover rent!!! Rent is closer to the $2000-3000/month. For a 1-2 bedroom apartment.
