  • Chief Joseph Medicine crow was the last person to complete all four feats required to be recognized as a Crow War Chief. Fighting in the liberation of France and in the push to Germany, his amazing deeds earned him recognition from the French, the Americans and the Crow Tribe.
If you want to find out more about Joe Medicine Crow we recommend you take a look at the Custer Museum site www.custermuseum.org/medicinec...

I'm gonna say something unpopular and answer to you, that in the grand scheme of things, this story, and others alike, are really not that important.
Sure a good history tea cher will weave some nice anecdotes like this one into his or her lesson, but it is far more important that the kids he or she teaches come out of school with a basic understanding of what happened in the history of their country and with some critical thinking skills, rather with a shit ton of awesomer anecdotes about indian chieftans fighting nazis or something.
UA-cam channels like this one, books, movies, docu series exist to fill us in on this kind of knowledge.

@@geniemikihistory is more than you learn from the surface, it is something that should be taught individually. There's not one learning method that works for all.
"While I understand the merits of Western formal education, it's important to recognize that it isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Indigenous people have their own valuable knowledge and learning methods, which deserve recognition and incorporation in educational systems. Relying solely on Western models risks overlooking the rich diversity of learning styles, perspectives, and values that other cultures bring to the table. A more inclusive approach would ensure that education is adaptive and respectful to every child’s unique background and needs."

I remember reading somewhere that a family member of his, grandson or nephew I believe, did the same thing in Vietnam, completing 3 of the 4 required tasks. The fourth task was to obviously steal an enemy’s horse but finding no horses, he instead stole two elephants from the Vietcong instead and returned to his encampment with said elephants in tow. The chiefs did not consider this to complete the task however. Still, quite an amazing (and humorous) story nonetheless!

Many thanks for another great animation!! I'm having to ration myself to one of these per day as I don't want to binge watch them as the stories would become diluted. That bronze Star was a long time coming, well overdue and more than justified. A fantastic story about a legendary warrior chief brilliantly told. Thank you! 👍👍👍👍👍

Yarnhub’s videos are the best. Especially since they’re not like the big history channels I’ve seen like Oversimplified who touch on big topics people already know about. You guys touch on smaller endeavors not many people know about, and that’s real learning. I wonder what SimpleHistory is up to.

Joe Medicine Crow fought gallantly and with deserved honor, for his country. The same country that treated not only his tribes, but all Native Americans terribly...

One could say that the Crow Tribe was his country. And that he brought a great deal of honor to them.

I was told the crow tribe got off easy because the last chief added a day school not a boarding school and in the 1800s the crow tribe decided to Ally with the government and not go to war with them so many crows weren’t slaughtered but a lot did die from smallpox. But my grandma did say when she was younger in the school she went to the day school they would slap your hand with a ruler if they spoke their native language

As ridiculously romanticized as one on one combat is and despite my own experience in fighting for my life, the idea of honorable combat between warriors never fails to give me chills.

This is a terrific story - the Tatonka Buffalo Museum near Deadwood relate a similar tale about a young First Nation soldier who sensed he wouldn't come back. He asked for his funeral procession to include the wildest horse on the ranch he'd worked on, saddled up but riderless. "And", he said, "My spirit will be riding that saddle." And the US Army honoured his wishes to the letter. Like the Red Tails, it's great to remember that these people, who'd been so badly abused by the white population, produced so many great heroes and true patriots. They need more such stories to be widely remembered.
