I bought heirloom carrot seeds and realized the other day I would have to harvest the seeds from the flowers or something I am assuming. Not sure yet but I haven’t sowed them as it’s not time. Super excited for my first year food gardening ❤ praise the Lord
This is because carrots are root vegetables but potatoes are tubers! A lot of people think they're root veggies since they grow kind of like roots, but essentially, potatoes are like deposits for the plant to store nutrients (notice the difference: potatos are starchy and globular in shape while carrots are fibrous and longer). They are able to asexually reproduce, meaning that any potato plant you make from the same potato is genetically identicle to the potato it came from (this makes potato populations really vulnurable to disease). A carrot is actually just an engorged root, so what you did was just repot the existing carrot plant. In order to make more carrots the plant has to sexually reproduce first to make seeds. Then you can make more carrots that are genetically different! :)
@Kori yeah, lol. Sweet potatoes are funny because they aren't actually potatoes (like pandas and red pandas). They're genetically not actually that similar since sweet potatoes are technically tuberous roots and not tubers. If you look up the root diagrams of a potato and a sweet potato you can see the different in how they grow underground 🥔 🍠
@@dxstiny02The only ones that like it are people that are likely under the age of 16. Carrots are biennials. The part we eat is harvested in the first year of its life. If the plant is left alone and not harvested, all those sugars and nutrients in the roots (aka the carrot) will be used the following year to produce flowers and then seeds that can be used to grow more carrots.
@@l.thangamanimani9535 Does this mean they can act like a perennial if you were to grow a crop this year and leave half of them in the ground in which next year the plants will seed out leaving crop for the 3rd years and as long as you plant back every years for a few years they could in theory keep growing every year as long as the seeds take root?
I once put a rooting whole carrot in a pot when i was a kid. It proceeded to grow almost as tall as me, but it unfortunately snapped due to how tall it was- right as it started to seed. I was DEVESTATED. It was like a child to me. I ate it. It didn't taste good.
My carrots always die when i plant them like this, the carrot part rots and the leaves don't survive :( i gave up, tried a lot of times but it's always the same result
I find you can't let the water be too high up the carrot & replacing or adding more water religiously, not letting the water to sour. Lots of light so that the top grows & the roots start to grow "before" the orange part starts to rot. Those individual 1 to ounce condiment sauce containers, as seen in this video, are perfect. If one goes bad, it won't affect the others. A sunny windowsill is the perfect place & I rotate/turn the containers daily when I add water. Like she said, it is easy to forget to add water them, but one day miss seems to make the carrot jumpstart those roots when you hydrate that dry carrot. Like she said, she almost killed it, yet got success. Doesn't cost you anything but time & effort to try again.
Just do it from seed and you’ll get a great harvest but if u want more seeds just let one or two seed no matter what u get a great healthy plant and healthy seeds and varieties of carrots you never thought
I've worked in many garden centers and wholesale greenhouses before I retired. I was always told you will have a stronger and healthier plant if you put it in the dirt and not in water. I put things in water sometimes, but it's just for decorative purposes, like on the windowsill. I don't intend to keep it forever.
I tried this last year and was SHOCKED by how many carrot flowers came from the small bit I cut off the top. They smell magical, unlike any flower I have ever smelt and they are huge. The hummingbirds LOVED it as well! Can’t wait to try and plant the seeds I collected this year! 🦋🌱 Wishing your carrot friend a healthy and happy life!
A carrot is the taproot of its plant, while potatoes are basically subterranean energy stores. A potato plants grows many potatoes, but a carrot plant only grows one carrot.
Here, educate yourselves so you don't continue looking like an ignorant know-it-all who in fact does not know what they're talking about. I'll get you started: "Stems are the parts of plants that bear branches, leaves, and fruits. Roots are the underground parts of plants that bear root hairs."
You can eat the greens, they are related to parsley although are a little tougher. If you don't like raw you can chop them and add them to soups or sauces for an extra boost of nutrients!
You *can* grow a carrot from a carrot. One way is to culture the stem cells, which are found around the circle-y bit of the inside of the carrot (the cortex)! Basically: cut out a bit of the carrot that has the cortex and a couple millimeters towards the outside of it, put into aseptic petting dish, expose it to auxin (it works the best to get your carrot embryos), separate your crumbly bitty bits of cells (those are baby carrot embryos), grow in a new culture plate with auxin/medium, and eventually you’ll get a whole new plant! You do however need to do this in an aseptic environment though, otherwise it’ll most likely mold lol Not an easy way in the slightest bit, but it does demonstrate a property of many plants where you can grow a whole plant from any of its stem cells! 😊 Source: I have a biology degree and studied cell culture and actually grew new carrot plantlets this way!
The green ring of the carrot cortex contain cells with high totipotency- the ability to form all sorts of cells. So it's possibly to force those cells to form roots, shoots, knaves, flowers and fruits when exposed to the proper plant hormones such as auxin, cytolinins and giberellins. You can also get prolific cell growth to form what's called a callus. You can do all this inside a sterile dish, tube or tray and under constant light and warmth they can grow complete plants. They need to be eased into sterile potting environments before being exposed to different conditions, light cycles and pests.
Man being on advanced biology makes me feel so cool watching videos like this. When learning about seeds and the sexual reproduction of plants, one of the examples were carrots. They live a 2-year cycle. The first produces a carrot (one), the second produces seeds!
For anyone wanting to do this, I did it and I did a little experiment along the way. I put two in water and two in potting soil. (One that still had some green at the top and one that didn't have anything on it in BOTH EXPERIMENTS)I figured out that putting it in water made the carrots grow faster, and one of the ones in dirt started to rot because I didn't cover it enough I guess...(The water didn't have anything in it, the water was just plain from a water bottle) So I would recommend starting it in water for like two weeks and then putting them in soil. (Hope it helps!)
The carrot we eat is just a big root. The plant produces flowers, which then produce small fruit that hold the seeds which can be planted. The seeds will eventually sprout and make roots, which will eventually become another carrot. Potatoes can make more potatoes because they're underground stems. Potatoes, unlike an actual root, have buds on them that can spread roots and leaves, which in turn make more stems. Think of a typical flower, like a rose. If you eat the roots, thats like a carrot. If you eat the stem, thats like a potato. And once a rose fruits, you can replant it to make more roses. Hope this helps :)
Carrot stalks and leaves are also edible, highly nutritious and full of flavour...! Don't leave them out of your diet and you'll open up a whole new world of flavour...!!!
