Rumeysa Gelgi, who holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s tallest living woman, boarded her first flight on September 28, 2022. Born with Weaver syndrome, a rare genetic mutation that causes abnormal bone growth, Gelgi stands at 2.15 metres (7ft) and usually gets around by wheelchair. To accommodate her needs on the 13-hour long-haul flight from Istanbul to San Francisco, Turkish Airlines turned six seats on the plane into a stretcher. The 25-year-old software engineer will be in the US for six months to advance her career and collaborate with Guinness to raise awareness about her condition.

Go Turkish airlines for making it possible for her!
I’ve experienced the challenges of flying with a disability (not even remotely close to her challenges though obviously) and it’s pretty rare for a airline to be even willing to accommodate unique situations like this even if you’re willing to pay for it because of the risks involved when someone with unique disabilities flies. Most use a legal right loophole to refuse based on acceptable risk protection.
Really happy for her. Even if it was just a flight, little things like this mean so much to those of us who’s disabilities can make us feel like prisoners in the normal world feel free!
I would actually feel better that they dont simply try to accomodate just because I'm willing to pay extra, because who's to say they are competent enough to even do the job.
It's kind of like flight delays on cheap flight, they are usually maintenance and all, I see people getting upset over the long delay, I'm just glad they tool the necessary time to do what needs to be done. Unless you're telling me the delay was because the crew was having a long lunch or something, that would be another issue.

@@R9naldo miserable lately???
It's a privilege to know about her. She's inspiring. Also, got to know about the rare disease which she has outgrown on. Thanks SCMP for sharing a glimpse of her & thanks to the Turkish Airlines too for making her journey comfortable.
Truly, and i hope she enjoys her time in the US
She's just a circus Act.

both the tallest man and woman are turkish... that's so interesting
How kind of the airline to support her!
yes yes! wonderful turkish airline
Yes, Also they are making a history
I wonder if they charged her extra for doing this for her , maybe not if they are advertising their airline company.
they did it for the views and as advertising, can you not see?
@@RomanTheMexican Regardless of motivation it's a win-win for both sides.
People saying the airline are only doing it for views. Listen both of them win this lovely person gets to travel the world and laying down chilled out 😂 and the airline gets publicity by helping and making history its a win win for all involved 👍
What a trooper to have to sit like that for a long flight, and for her to be smiling like that. Glad her disability does hold her back from happiness.
Wth is wrong with you?
Shouldn't you be sad that a woman is taller than your whole family instead of hating on her for no reasons?
@@hmnotfound9167 I think its a typo bro, don't waste ur breath.
i think he meant to say 'does not'
She is literally laying down, and you used the word sit. On top of that, laying down for long periods isn't difficult - people do it every night, it's called sleeping. You aren't particularly bright, are you?
The smile on her face is just great! My first time hearing anything about her, thank you!
How nice of Turkish airlines to accommodate for her. I wish they do that to all passengers.
That poor woman. Nobody should go through that much suffering in their life. Praying for her health.
always think of it as an advantage ... she's not disabled but differently abled
She honestly looks like she’s rolling with the punches. Most people I know who have disabilities live very happy lives. :)
@@liliamatar1237 ur sick
She looks happy, she isn't suffering
@@liliamatar1237 cringe. on the other hand, she seems to be doing alright in her life
Awesome humanitarian assistance by the staffs and airlines . Thank you
She is an engineer that's great to hear her doing well in the career life
Kudos to Turkish Airlines for accommodating her.
She's sitting down but is taller than people standing
We, asians, hate this comment. HHAHA
@@SaluDChris YES. As an Asian myself I would love to have a couple inches added to my height lol
Yes. Asia. A country.
But the thing is,i have a friend at school who is 224 cm.but hes male
Well ye i mean what do you expect from the tallest title of her gender in this world of 8 billion human beings
Love how the airline accommodated her! That is true customer service 😊
What a lovely story.
Hope you had a comfortable flight.
All the best in the US. 👍
Way to go Turkish Airlines!!
This meant the world to her and I’m glad they accommodated her situation and allowed her to travel! The world isn’t so cruel all the time
Did anyone notice the kid recording with his tablet at 1:11
Walking tall !! not because of her height but walking tall in the context of walking with head high .A lawyer, researcher and a software engineer ,she is no short of confidence!
Is she a giant
First, I would take my hat off to Turkish Airlines - truly exceptional & altruistic demeanour for a flight company - for their competitors, I hope you're taking note. This isn't just about inclusivity - this concerns any individual who might encounter challenges from the established order; get over yourselves !! To you, Rumeysa, I wish you the very best in the United States. Tall you may be, but I suspect your heart is bigger,
Best,
Andrew 🙂
she's only 7 feet tall? that can't be right, surely there are taller women
I was thinking that. I work with someone who's 6ft 7.
So world record make a mistake ?
so i understand it causes bone growth but did that make her unable to walk also? or what part of the condition specifically made her unable to walk? like were there growths in certain places that made her unable to walk or is the wheelchair just for convenience?
She has extreme trouble walking. Saw an earlier video......that wheelchair is a necessity
The syndrome makes her muscles weak and causes a curve in her spine, so she can't stand for longer than 30min.
nice to see wonderful people around her, so kind people and helpful.
Way to go turkish airlines, the staff who helped the young lady onto the plane, the staff on the plane for making her as comfortable as possible. The young lady, along with others with the same health issues, is an inspiration to so many people. Be interesting to meet her and listen to her experiences in life
The tallest man and woman in the world at this moment are both from turkey wow!
Lots of ❤️❤️❤️❤️ from 🇮🇳 to her may she achieve all her ambitions in her life.
May she live a healthy life ❤️
Blessings to her.
Thank you Turkish Airlines!
Such confidence and positivity, though I know her condition probably causes her a lot of pain. I'm really inspired by her.
It's so cool how the tallest man and woman are from the same country I feel bad that they have to deal with pain though hopefully they can at least try to live their life to the fullest that they can
Props to Turkish Airlines for accommodating her. I hope her journey was an enjoyable one.
Now she is the TALLEST women in the air!!

I’m so glad that she’s living her best life rn!
Both biggest man and woman are from Türkiye
Sweet. So happy she gets to travel. Bless all the people who made this possible!
I feel her pain. Must be exhausted to live like a bull in the china shop. But her mom probably told her to get around it with a smiley face. And that’s what she does.😢
the smile on her face is so beautiful to see ❤ she was so excited!
The smile the flight attendant made at the end made me fall in love with her
You have to leave the USA. South America, Brazil, Eastern Europe, women are far more feminine and nice. Big smiles. Not the angry Resting bytch face like American women.
Thank You Turkish Airlines
Welcome to the US🇺🇸. Super excited for her new journey.
This is amazing…kudos to everyone who made it possible…
Enjoy your trip, lovely young woman.
She seems to be a nice person 🙏❤️🙏
That’s really nice of Turkish airlines
Turkish Airlines...you are awesome 🙂😉👍🏼👍🏼
So awesome so in other video it is her dream to be able to travel, glad she gets to live a dream
I love how we are all unique.
Amazing accomplishment, but what they don't show is the 3 hours it takes to get through security 😤
Well done Turkish Airlines.
@01:10 the smiles say it all
I’m booking Turkish Airlines next just because they did this.
That’s pretty exciting for this young lady! 👍
Someone is gonna start an argument on this somehow
The tallest man is also in Turkey, right?
You go girl, live your life
1:11 are we just gonna ignore the fact that a 4 year old understands that this is cool
Her height of happiness is also tall
Dang she’s almost a foot taller than me, that’s insane

Welcome Rumeysa to California! You've won our hearts in the U.S.! Thank You Turkish Airlines for such radical consideration. Salute.
May Allah The almighty protect and reward every one Ameen
She had to lay down for the entire flight? That seems so cruel and uncomfortable.
@Audrey Bolte Get over yourself.
so she needs to travel lying flat in stretcher for 13 hours??
Whose heart wouldn't go out to her?
Really cool how she was accommodated.
Son: Are giants real Daddy?
Dad: They are and always have been son :)
Imagine being 2,15 but being wheelchair bound ...
Couldn't they give her first-class tickets to accommodate her height? The seats can be adjusted to a comfortable bed so she can sit upright. Laying down for the entire flight is ridiculous and uncomfortable. How will she be able to eat?
No first class aboard Turkish Airlines, only Business. And no, it wouldn't have been enough to accomodate her. Or accomodate her in a safe way, to say the least.
yo did yall notice that kid with the green ipad?
I did
Shapes, sizes, weights, colors, widths, and lengths should be worked around with necessities and accommodations yeah.
Big W for everyone involved!
All I can say is WOW. Esp. Its rare to find women as software engineer. I know there are some. But very few.
That's just the most awesome story AND she's a software engineer!!!! Super cool
Aww, heartwarming
She did it in the end
I'm happy for her
Dear child. You are normal to me. More intelligent than most. Unfortunately there was something covering or pressing on your pituitary gland during child hood. It doesn’t affect intelligence. That’s the pineal gland. Yours is working better than most. Have a blessed life my child. Peace Love
It is that they did it for free/low cost to prove it's possible for commercial airlines to adapt economy space for stretchers. Of course, normally this sort of adaptation requires extra personnel, and so people have to book private jets or business class.
Her other option for quick travel would be land and sea, first rail or sea from Turkey to Italy and then Italy to Paris by train (eurobusses can't accomodate her needs) and then ferry or train to UK, then sea or private jet to New York.
How exhausting and expensive- a week's journey.
So if companies sponsor disabled travel, it increases the vital sharing of experiences and skills around the world.
Not my ideal destination, but hey the accomplishment alone is awesome. Best of luck in software as well
She's in software and tech industry...no doubt she's going to SFC also for the work, networking and business opportunities that are there
@@djstonedog is that the purpose of her trip? I assume it's for medical reasons.

@@boybawang1981 I think they're making it up, she could probably transfer to a wheelchair with the help of an attendant and go to the bathroom normally
inspiring, keep[ this up
This reminds me of Avatar for some reason. Must've been the transportations.
Having to lie down for the whole plane ride must of felt so awkward. Whenever I lie down around other people I always want to sit up so I can see what’s going on. Lying down feels so exposed. She wouldn’t of been able to drink or eat anything either.
Dang, isn’t the tallest man also from Turkey?
She looks so happy!
I like that the tallest women is also turkish like worlds tallest man
Was she too tall to sit? Or to fix thr weelchair in the plane? Why did she have to lie? That must have been awfully uncomfortable.
I hope they lowered the stretcher so she could see out the windows.
Oh is she the tallest woman now?
Forgot I wasn't still play d&d for a minute there.
I am 2m05 why don't I get a stretcher 😂 She should move to my country The Netherlands. Most would only be 10 cm smaller than her hahaha. She would feel right at home.
Do you have Weaver Syndrome?
Well, it has to do with the fact that she has extremely difficulty walking
Bish literally sits tall as a average person
how do 7ft+ tall basketball players travel?
Normally, unfortunately she has weaver syndrome.
Respect to airlines crew
شفاها الله وعافاها وكل مريض
I believe that showing your empathy doesn't require you to add "wish you the best from *country", its just so unnecessary and rude in some way.
My son in-law also 188cm ,I feel so short in that respect 😍 but Alhamdulillah I love my life
So she'll be on a stretcher for 13 hours???
