Tenza was born poor with neglectful parents and people who looked down on him on the street. Tenza used his freedom to rob, kill, and sleep whenever he wanted. Tenza was interrupted while beating up some samurai on the street by a blind man named Yamada Asaemon Shion. He tried to attack him but was defeated and fell. Tenza declined Shion's offer to join the Yamada clan. Shion then challenged Tenza, forcing him to become his student if he could defeat him in a fight with only his left hand. Tenza challenged and lost instantly.[3]
After becoming his student, Tenza had to practice swordsmanship daily and change his lifestyle, attitude, and speech. At the Yamada dōjō, Tenza asked Shion why he picked him up off the streets and was told that he saw potential in him and liked helping others, which Tenza didn't understand. After resuming his relentless training, Shion told Tenza that his sword skills will help him protect something precious in the future, which he didn't understand because his previous lifestyle prevented him from thinking about his future.[4]
Tenza later took Shion to a temple. Before leaving the dōjō, Tenza heard Shion talk about a few cherry blossom tree buds and how they could bloom into anything, which he saw as a representation of him. Tenza waited for Shion at the temple where he visited a grave and ran into a former friend. Tenza lashed out at his former friends after they mocked him for becoming an apprentice to a blind samurai after being defeated by him, but Shion stopped him. Tenza refused Shion's tutelage after being chastised for his emotions. Shion gave Tenza a chance to leave if he could hit him with his wooden sword once. Tenza accepted and tried his first attack as they left the temple, but Shion dodged it.
After Shion left on a trip, Tenza gave up after failing to hit Shion with each underhanded attempt. Tenza encountered Yamada Asaemon Eizen before leaving Shion's house. Eizen told Tenza that he would not stop him from breaking his promise to Shion but asked him to follow him to a certain location. Tenza followed Eizen to Shion's graveyard. Eizen showed Tenza Tesshin's grave, which Shion visited previously. Eizen told Tenza that Shion executed Tesshin after the young man left the Yamada clan to live his own life, rejecting his master's teachings. Eizen asked Tenza if he still wanted to break his promise to Shion after hearing this story. Tenza kept his word and went to the Yamada dōjō until he hit Shion, understanding Shion's reasons for treating him so.[6]
After practicing with the Yamada clan, Tenza hit Shion. Tenza chose to stay with Shion and improve his sword skills even though he could leave.[7] Tenza became a Yamada Asaemon and tenth-rank Yamada.
After the discovery of Shinsenkyō, the shogun orders Tenza and the other Yamada Asaemons to recruit death row convicts for the latest expedition team to retrieve the Elixir of Life, promising them an official pardon. He goes to Nurugai's prison. Tenza believes Nurugai is innocent and asks her to accept the mission to survive..

When they started going through his back story and the bond he made with Nurugai it made me start liking this character at first he wasn't that impressive it was very sad with what happened to him
