    I'm not an visually artistic person, but I have attended MANY seminars at this school to stay informed of all the developments in CGI, and I can say this is one of the BEST computer art schools in the world.

      Gnomon is an online school, but, indeed, the classes cost a lot.

      ***** The thing about going to classes is that you get critiques. Getting proper critiques is the best way to grow. Personally, i think it's the ONLY way to become a true professional. Sure, you can learn the programs and know all the buttons, but my professor once told me, "if you always practice shit and no one tells you otherwise, it will be shit." lol

      Yes, critiques are very necessary. I didn't say you needed classes to get this good. But you definitely need a trained eye to tell you what you're doing wrong so that you can learn from mistakes.
      That being said, you can get critiques anywhere, from blogs to art sites, not just classes.

    • @DomsBlading
      @DomsBlading 9 років тому

      Critiques are probably the most helpful aspect in developing your art career. But what if you are self-taught and don't really have access to a professional instructor to go over your work? There's always forums but, some artists who are not as experienced, tend to just bs some things on critiques and They could essentially be wrong to go about fixing your mistakes. For me personally, the best way, if you are going to self-critique for instance, is look at other professional artists' work from the industry.
      Compare your art to theirs as much as you can (not copy of course), and ask yourself when you do your own pieces, is it believable? does lighting look somewhat right? proportions? etc. The more you do that, it allows you to see your own mistakes, and what you need to do more to achieve that pro look. Of course you still need to learn fundamentals...prior to that.

      It's Gnomon School of Visual Effects. Private school; taught by working pros. It's in L.A. Mariana has been up there to see the making of UP. It's geared towards giving the skills to make it in the game, movie and FX industries.

    • @ConnerZ
      @ConnerZ 10 років тому +1

      Nice! ill look into that via google :D if they made something like UP its something worth looking into :D

    • @RyanJohnsonD
      @RyanJohnsonD 10 років тому

      They didn't make UP. But Gnomon will host (for free - to the public) "The Making of..." nights at their school; speakers are professionals from Disney, DreamWorks, Pixar, etc. The lecturer[s] usually have worked on the movie and have deep knowledge of the subject matter they are discussing. They demonstrate cutting edge technology or innovative uses, and discuss what decisions went into making it. The conferences are usually free to the public; anyone can attend. You just need to RSVP on their site so they can count "UP" the numbers that will attend. :P

      A lot. I'm going to go with Maya, ZBrush, UDK, Realflow, Krakatoa, Nuke, the Adobe programs like Ps and Ae, I'm sure C4D, Vray, 3DSMax, maybe Mudbox and Unity. Who knows maybe Houdini, Blender, and Lightwave as well. But if you're looking to get into this kind of stuff I would point you towards Maya or even Blender which is free but not nearly as powerful.

    • @plasmaflex
      @plasmaflex 10 років тому +1

      Gnomon students use Maya (and sometimes 3ds Max), Zbrush, Mudbox, After Effects, UDK, Photoshop and Nuke.

    My only critic about this is that its all over the place. Its very nice - nothing solid in any particular area. Im not sure if i would see you in environments / characters / fx / animation / composting /
    Narrow the time down a lot and only show what your proud of. no one hiring is gonna want to see 9 minutes of work slowly getting worse and worse.
    Other wise great stuff keep it up

      +Ack Master I'm not really sure thats what this is. This is a compilation of diffrent students work over the course of 2014. I think its more for profiling the school and just in general showing of what they teach and what their students are capable of, not one person making a 9 minute reel.

    Be nice if someone would actually outline what you NEED to know or have in terms of knowledge to go here and be able to succeed. Not to mention trying to talk to an actual adviser doesn't go anywhere..
