Johnny Lee had another guge hit with Cherokee Fiddle, which was also featured in Urban Cowboy. This movie singlehandedly defined a generation Johnny Lee, Mickey Gilly, Charlie Daniels and many more were featured in this film. Gillys (where the movie was filmed) was the largest bar in the world at the time.
A very handsome man who captured the heart of Dallas' gorgeous Charlene Tilton. With his voice, he had the whole package. "Sounds Like Love" is another great song by Johnny Lee.
Johnny Lee holds a special place in my music history. Back in either 1978 or 1979 I got in some trouble and did some prison time in Texas. Johnny Lee came to Huntsville and gave a concert for the inmates. It wasn't anything he had to do but he did it anyway. All the inmates were loving it so he didn't want to stop. The guards were getting pissed but he just ignored them and kept playing. I'll never forget that if I live to be 100. When you're in prison in Texas, a concert is like winning the lotto. I was at the place where John Westly Hardin did his time. Interesting, but no fun. Back then Johnny Lee played at Gillys quite a bit. I hope someday I get the chance to thank him for coming and giving the inmates some music to enjoy. Thanks Johnny.
years agoin the 60s and 70s there was a place in north hollywood ca called the palomino where just about everyone had played over the years, one night i sat next to johnny lee, what a great down to earth person, will never forget that evening.
I was about 10 when this was a hit and remember my parents playing it a ton. Good stuff. Don Williams would be a good guy for you to check out. "Tulsa Time" is a big one of his.

Recommend watching both of Debra in a row!
Classic 70's & 80's country was pretty good. I usually only knew country songs if they crossed over into the pop & AC charts. This was one of those songs. This spent 3 weeks at #1 on the country chart, and #5 on the hot 100 singles chart in 1980. 😎
Now that you’ve heard this popular tune from 1980, you should definitely see the film it’s from: URBAN COWBOY (1980), starring John Travolta, Debra Winger, and Scott Glenn, and based on some very real people and situations in Pasadena, TX (near Houston) that were written about in Esquire magazine by Aaron Latham, who wrote the screenplay with the film’s director, James Bridges. The film's success was credited for spurring a mainstream revival of country music. Much of the action revolves around activities at Gilley's Club, a football-field-sized honky tonk in Pasadena, Texas that was tremendously popular for many years (unfortunately it no longer exists).
Glad you brought up the size of that 'ol Honkey Tonk as my Aunt called it. My Dad had extensive heart surgery in Houston so we siblings decided to run over to Gilley's to check it out including my brother taking a swing at the punching ball. His response was about the same as Winger's except she was acting and my brother was a dentist. Yikes. We took pictures. Wish I could post them. The one of me is a double exposure with me drinking a lone star (bottle) and the mechanical bull in the background. The double exposure made it look like we were having a wild time. I think we looked around, my brother tried punching the bag and we drank a beer, bought a T-shirt and went back to the hospital in Houston. It was a very big dance hall with a huge bar.
@@darthpandinus1746 I don’t recall seeing any mountains last time I watched the movie but I know that they filmed around the Houston area extensively and I can confirm that because I used to live there and I recognized several locations in the film. But I’ll keep my eyes open for mountains in the background the next time it’s on TV; it’s possible they did a pickup shot or two in the L.A. area after they had completed filming in Texas and the mountains near there got into a couple shots! 😂
@@RetroClassic66 Haven't seen it in awhile but that it one of the things I remember in the movie is John Travolta driving on the interstate and in the background you can see the snowcapped mountains of Houston. According to IMDb: The terrain of Houston/Pasadena Texas is very flat, yet as Bud and other characters are seen driving down his street in the trailer park, a significant range of hills is easily noticed in the background. (These scenes were filmed in a trailer park in a suburb of Los Angeles called Pico Rivera, California, and the hills are the San Gabriel Mountains.)
