I am Nigerian but there are two things I like about this anthem. First, the opening line "God Bless Africa" is the best part of it. They are not asking God to bless only South Africans but to bless the whole continent. Second, the diversity of the anthem is the most beautiful thing about it. Singing in 4 different languages is extraordinary. Well done to the composer!

Did you know?
South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia both have the same national anthem.
Same rhythm, but in different languages.
Nkosi sikelel' Afrika - South Africa(Xhosa: original one, then they re-wrote it into more than 5 languages).
Stand and Sing of Zambia, Proud and Free - Zambia(English).
Mungu ibariki Afrika - Tanzania(Swahili).
It was written by a South African man, Enoch Sontonga in 1897.
And was first adopted by Tanzania in 1961, later by Zambia in 1964 (Re-wrote it in 1973), Zimbabwe in 1980, Namibia in 1990, and then South Africa in 1997.
As of today, only Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa still uses it as their national anthem.
While Zimbabwe and Namibia changed their national anthems a few years later.
The main purpose behind using that song as a national anthem, was to unite Africa.

When I first started watching rugby one of my first things to do was to learn the words of our Anthem. And now I sing them loud and proud. I have also been learn isiXhosa with some of my colleagues from work and have understood some of the lines just by what I know.
Like imithandazo yethu is our prayers, Nkosi is God, phakama means to rise and what I do know also is the first verse is a combination of isiXhosa and isiZulu. The second is a combination of Sesotho and Pedi. And the two verses are almost the same in terms of what is being said.
The third verse is Afrikaans which talks about our land with the seas, mountains and heights.
Then the 4th verse builds on from all of those to bring the singer back to our land and all who live in it. The more I learn, the more I sing this anthem with passion.

The south African national anthem has 5 of our 11 official languages which is isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans and English. If u wanna know what nkosi sikelel iAfrika means it means 'God bless Africa' also thank u for all he nice comments abt our national anthem and ur great reaction video to our anthem 💜 💖 ❤
I am from Puerto Rico and for some reason my eyes cried a little
Not so fun fact: It was illegal to sing n'kosi sikeleli during apartheid so for it to be the national anthem now, you gotta love it.
You making me emotional 😭
Well not quite, it wasn't so much illegal than perhaps that you'll be showing your colors to the authorities if you over did it publicly.. I learnt to sing it in primary school in the early 80s. Remember Nkosi sikelela iAfrika is a mere church hymn, and a very old one at that.
South Africa where God lives... a rainbow nation.
👍🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Amen my sister 🇿🇦🕊
God bless South Africa

perfect video for hearing our national anthem the way it's supposed to sound, you will never hear it better, louder or more filled with South African pride than right before a Springbok match.
I like South African anthem because they worship God in their Anthem.
Thanks 🇿🇦✌
Thanks my guy
that's so nice
Not sure which God though, but yeah I'll roll with it.

Her voice is just so unique and beautiful, and her deep Xhosa accent even on the afrikaans version is just out of this world. South Africa is just beautiful.
As a cameroonian i find the South African anthem to be extremely beautiful. After the Cameroon anthem. You guys been sleeping on us. 😂
The South African National anthem always gives me chills / goosebumps and make me stop and listen / sing and cry. I can listen to it five times in a row, it will always give me the same emotions. It reminds me how proudly South African I am, love my country.

The lyrics employ the five of the most widely spoken of South Africa's eleven official languages - Xhosa (first stanza, first two lines), Zulu (first stanza, last two lines), Sesotho (second stanza), Afrikaans (third stanza), and English (final stanza).
It’s an African prayer. Written in 5 different languages- Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans & English. Nkosi sikelel i’Africa” = Lord bless Africa
I am South African and my favorite part about our national anthem is that it is in five different languages in order to represent the different cultures in South Africa 🇿🇦
Next you should go visit South Africa, you would be even more mind blown from natural beauty of the country.
I’m english and I go every year for 1 month for the past 5 years.
Where in South Africa do you usually visit?

Their national anthem is resemble with my country Tanzania and am proud of that 😍😍😍😍😍😍
It also sounds alot like the Zambian national anthem
That would be because several African countries and liberation movements adopted this South African song over the decades and changed the words to it.
(It was written in 1897 at Johannesburg by Enoch Sontonga)
I have never been so proud to call myself South African ,i am crying 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
It's good to see how it impacted you. I cry every time I sing this anthem. Our nation is becomes one when our boys play. It's beautiful...
most people struggle when it comes to the afrikaans part
Is that why it's always the loudest part🙈🙈
Facts 🤣🤣🤣💯
Not me Afrikaans praat lol 🇺🇸. I get stuck on sesoto 😂😂
True
For black people, it's the hard part. But the Xhosa/Zulu and the Tswana part are quite hard for white people to sing.
South Africa n anthem is almost the same to Tanzanian anthem but diffence is words🇹🇿🇹🇿
Very True...
The Tanzanian national anthem is exactly Nkosi Sikelel'iAfrica in its entirety, sung in KiSwahili obviously. Nkosi Sikelela was adopted by respective nationalists in southern Africa as a rallying cry against colonialism. It was also, the national anthem of Zimbabwe till the mid 90s. A number of regional leaders were educated at Fort Hare i.e. Mandela, Mugabe etc, suggesting this could be the source of the inspiration.
So are national flags, just the different orientation in colors and the red in SA flag makes the difference..
The Zambian national anthem is also the same as South African, Tanzanian, and Zimbabwe's old Anthem.
Coz we family 🌸🤞🏽
Wow so emotional i love the SA National anthem it's similar with the Tanzania's national anthem much love from Kenya 🇰🇪
And also zambia

Shout out to you bro for reacting to our mother land a couple many times right now shout out ...like Americans like to say :"YOU ARE REAL ONE "
It's multiple languages thought the anthem, showing our cultural diversity.
I’m a Nigerian lived in South Africa for 12yrs. It’s a combination of many languages (Xhosa, Zulu, sesotho, Afrikaans (Afrikaans is a language basically for the white folks, it’s a twisted Dutch language) and English. It speaks more about the struggles during the apartheid.
