I disagree. Robert Smigel drew heavily on SNL, and between shows like SCTV and Monty Python, plus the stand-up and sketch backgrounds of the other writers and performers, and Charlie Kaufman, Dana's show was very much of its time. If The Dana Carvey Show were on ABC in 2019, same timeslot, with the same type of lead-in, the same thing would happen. It might not even make it as far as it did the first time. Just as I'm writing this I'm thinking of Dana as trump, breast feeding. Even funnier.

@@johnlenz420 Mike Meyers produced and wrote Austin Powers. He didn't need another acting credit. Regardless of whether Dana should have been brought on or not.
Part of why this is funny/sad is that every bit of frustration that Dana Carvey feels toward Mike Meyers for things like this, David Spade probably feels toward Dana Carvey for things Dana Carvey probably doesn't ever remember or think about. At least if you watch David Spade's interviews with Norm MacDonald, there were a bunch of ideas David came up with and pitched to Lorne that Lorne loved but gave to Dana instead, since Dana was the big star at the time. The SNL environment tends to get fuzzy with the individual cast members "owning" their own work or ideas. It seems like the kind of thing that would eventually get frustrating and drive people out to do their own projects - which of course they do, and they're sometimes very awesome. But everybody does a version of the Lorne impression now. Bill Hader does a version of it on TV all the time. Dana Carvey had a time when he could have claimed it as his own, but he didn't, he kind of gave it to the group, and it must be kind of heartbreaking to see other people do it now when none of them are in the group anymore. And with Dana Carvey you've got this huge sense of missing out because when he was in a place where he could have been doing amazing movies and TV stuff he had some bad luck with it and then got gravely ill and suffered from that horrible surgical accident. And so every missed opportunity from that time period probably hurts extra. It can't feel fair.
But wouldn't David Spade be more frustrated towards Lorne? Because he was the one who would give instructions or a command or whatever to Dana what to do. I remember when David talked about it to Howard before.
LOL, good point, I remember that with David Spade. That would be hilarious for Stern to go down the line of SNL guests and their gripes. I think the David Spade story was something like how Dana did TWO characters in one sketch and they only used Spade on the long shots. NOw thats gotta hurt. It goes all the way back at least to Harry Shearer being dissed on Begin. But thats the sad thing about both SNL and Hollywood, everything is about the pecking order and how far up or down the ladder you are, its not just about making people laugh, there's a whole industry around manipulating celebrity. Here people are ranking which of two guys is 'better' when in comedy, good lord, come on, for every laugh you got, there are at least a dozen groaners aimed at a different audience or stuff that just didn't land. Austin Powers was just too much caricature for me, the only part I found really hysterical was the catharsis of finally seeing a henchman (in this case his son) saying "lets just go shoot them". No, no, we have an extremely intricate trap which will slowly kill them... And it wasn't more funny because he put a pinky to his mouth.
Scott E Mike Meyers isn’t weird people with low intelligence just don’t know how to deal with a person like that, I imagine he goes around all day screwing with peoples heads just for fun, and they take it seriously cause they are bunch of knobs
Mark McKinney had already done a Lorne Micheals impression, sans the pinky, one year earlier than Mike Myers in the 1996 Kids in the Hall movie “Brain Candy” where he played the CEO of a pharmaceutical company. Of course that film wasn’t the runaway success that Austin Powers was.
So weird to see Dana talk about this so openly now, because this rift between them over Dr Evil was an urban legend for years back in the day when both of them had basically disappeared from pop culture, and no one could get a clean quote from them about it. I guess at the time it was too fresh and sensitive. I remember reading about their falling out over Dr Evil and Lorne in the trivia section for Master of Disguise (turtle! Turtle!) on imdb back in like 2002 when I was 13yrsold, but back then youtube didn't exist, and Myers was at his peak but Dana had been incognito for years. Can't tell you how cool it was to hear Dana not only finally talk about this but also approach it so empathetically. What a class act. He's so right about Mike - he literally risked his career for Bohemian Rhapsody (the studio didn't want the song to be used for the head banging scene) and now he's starring in a Queen biopic. Times are weird!
@Brandon S "I think it's weird that Dana carvey is upset over that." Sorry, what interview did you watch? Dana even specifically says that because he did it backstage and nobody saw him that it's an extenuating circumstance. And it's OK for him to be a little bit upset, because it was still kind of a dick move. Defend Myers all you want, he knows he took something without asking or giving credit and so does Dana.
You might only get credit from.the mirror in the short term but living an honorable mans life is a long game. Mike Myers has soured his work and soiled his name with short sighted glory.
0:26 Seems Howard stepped on the answer there? Dana was about to say something interesting and that line of thought was interrupted. Would love to know what he was going to say at that point. For example, he was talking about sharing similarities between his childhood and Mike's, Mike being bullied, and....cut. Derailment :(
I have a wonderful answer to this. They should do another Austin Powers went to alter ego Austin Powers competing for power together, they could be long separated not so identical twins :-) there’s just so much talent between Mike Myers and Dana.
I have a feeling mike Myers isn’t the only one who “borrowed” from Dana. One of the best SNL cast members ever and imo I put him up there with the Chevys and Steve Martins
Everyone can agree that as a protagonist Dr Evil is the perfect opposite of Austin Powers and it was a good thing the impression got to see the light of day, but also that a phone call to Dana from Mike Myers would have been the nice thing to do...
I'll never forget the _Dana Carvey Show_ where each week he took the piss outta his sponsors / advertising. IIRC his shows titles incorporated a different sponser each show. And it was "tremendous" top gear comedy; way ahead of its time. Dana should bring his show back, if up for it. A shoestring budget UA-cam show I really think would work. Dana _is_ comedy, no bells & whistles needed.
Mike and Dana are funny men. Totally understand with Dana being like that about his doing the imitation of Lorne Michaels. I would just be like, “You borrowed it. Just don’t keep it, now.” Great interview, Howard.
Mark McKinney from Kids in the Hall (A Lorne Michaels production) and who was also on SNL, did a Lorne Michaels impression for a character in the 1996 movie Brain Candy. Austin Powers came out in 1997, a year later. Mike Myers also knew the Kids in the Hall and at one time was considered for a spot in the troupe. Maybe he took it from McKinney. Or maybe it's just an impression and nobody owns it. Mike Myers is so brilliant that he likely didn't need help figuring it out.
Howard comes across as that kid in school who goes to other kids and says “You know he talked trash about you? “You wanna fight him?” And he does this to both kids!

@@johnlenz420 Mike Meyers produced and wrote Austin Powers. He didn't need another acting credit. Regardless of whether Dana should have been brought on or not.
Originally Jim Carrey was cast as Dr. Evil. He had to back out because he was busy doing Liar Liar.
And that would have left Myers doing what in his own movies?
Old wounds..Dana's therapist will be getting a call soon
That's not good I'm not happy
I loved Dana's Ross Perot on SNL with Will Ferrell as Larry King in 1996😄😄
I know that Colbert and Carell both appreciate Carvey for giving them the start on his old show, Colbert mentions that whenever he gets the chance
Dana is just pure class. All the way. Loved this wanted to see whole interview but I ain't payin
Carv is so amazing- brilliant comic mind, legendary impressionist.
And yet, he's nice, humble and diplomatic about it. What a guy.
Great comment.
At the end of the day there are no truly original ideas and the most genius artists are at least half thief. The name Bob Dylan comes to mind ..
Yeah, but it's one thing to be assigned someone else's idea as a performer; it's another thing to assign someone else's performance to yourself.
Mike Meyers is such a weird dude, everyone who's worked with him has said he's impossible to deal with. I like the new, more mature Howard.
Scott E Mike Meyers isn’t weird people with low intelligence just don’t know how to deal with a person like that, I imagine he goes around all day screwing with peoples heads just for fun, and they take it seriously cause they are bunch of knobs
I was just thinking the same thing about Stern...well better late than never
Those are the two less fucking related sentences ever.
Howard rocks..Mike Myers does seem like a freak...Carvey kicks his ass talent wise
By his own words, he's a perfectionist and that can rub people who don't care as much the wrong way.
Howard when he is on his game is a very competent interviewer
There's an understatement. The guy is a legend.
Chris Greene very similar to Dan Patrick when he interviews athletes. Actually asks interesting questions
Chris Greene yeah, he’s been incredibly successful for a long time lol
Mark McKinney had already done a Lorne Micheals impression, sans the pinky, one year earlier than Mike Myers in the 1996 Kids in the Hall movie “Brain Candy” where he played the CEO of a pharmaceutical company. Of course that film wasn’t the runaway success that Austin Powers was.
Kids in the Hall did Lorne in Brain Candy, that was before Austin Powers
Exactly
Lorne Michaels had absolutely NOTHING To do with Kids in the Hall.
[EDD] brain candy 1996... Austin Powers 1997
This is all I could think of watching this interview, Mark McKinney did it first as Don Roritor in Brain Candy
Super highly underrated show. Better than most SNL skits.
$$$ Entertainment therapy, so well executed, everyone can heal, and we all can learn. Howard is a genius compassionate man $$$
Remember this guy in moving with Richard pryer? Great movie
Ian don’t let the hat fool you.... the Popes a crazy mother fucker.....classic...
Dude that movie is freaking hilarious AND NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN IT. Drives me crazy. I’m literally the only person I know who has ever seen that movie.
You have to be pretty selective when choosing someone to drive your Saab
I gave him the wrong finger!
Hey, stud..you wanna ride me? Do you like my car? It's got a real big engine. Do you? Have it your way, Mr Perfect.
Do you harbour any resentment that Mile Myers made millions from a character you invented?
*Dana slowly dies inside*
Another great comment ruined by a simple grammatical error 🙄.
On the other hand, Dana has no doubt made a bundle on Wayne’s World residuals. Maybe it is a wash.
@@B5s4 and the commenter's ignorance of the ability to edit comments lol.
jNs3 is it really that big of a deal?
@Brandon S "I think it's weird that Dana carvey is upset over that." Sorry, what interview did you watch? Dana even specifically says that because he did it backstage and nobody saw him that it's an extenuating circumstance. And it's OK for him to be a little bit upset, because it was still kind of a dick move. Defend Myers all you want, he knows he took something without asking or giving credit and so does Dana.
Aw man. Hope Dana can come to terms with it. Being noble is the harder path and no one gives you credit for it, only a mirror can.
Did you listen to this interview or not? He has already come to terms with it.
You might only get credit from.the mirror in the short term but living an honorable mans life is a long game. Mike Myers has soured his work and soiled his name with short sighted glory.
I had no idea Dr. Evil was based on Lorne, or at least a Lorne impression, until now. But I totally see it.
Dana Carvey’s “ Carsineo “ bit was my favorite . I was spell bound with his ability to merge Carson and Arsenio Hall was genius.
Howard Stern - trying to ruin relationships since 1985
0:26 Seems Howard stepped on the answer there? Dana was about to say something interesting and that line of thought was interrupted. Would love to know what he was going to say at that point. For example, he was talking about sharing similarities between his childhood and Mike's, Mike being bullied, and....cut. Derailment :(
Wait a second - Mark McKinney did a Lorne Michaels impression in "Brain Candy," a year before Austin Powers.
Chrissake, Howard. Stop stabbing him in the scar.
Howard the best ever interviewer on the planet 👏👏👏👏
Most underrated snl member. Loved him and hartman
With those frames on, I was waiting for Garth Algar to show up.
I have a wonderful answer to this. They should do another Austin Powers went to alter ego Austin Powers competing for power together, they could be long separated not so identical twins :-) there’s just so much talent between Mike Myers and Dana.
kevinsbott mini me died they will not make another
I always thought Carvey was the more talented between him and Meyers.
Both just as talented
Lord Motorsports definitely more talented, even though i still kinda prefer myers for so i married an axe murderer
Myers more of a concept man, Carver would deliver.
Uh yeah, ya think?
Carvey has a spontaneous wit that few comedians can touch (maybe Robin Williams and a couple of others). Meyers' sense of humor is more scripted.
Soooooo underrated an actor on his own. Opportunity Knocks is an all time favorite. Much more then all the bits in it.
I think this is the first time I've ever heard Dana's actual voice.
I had a huge crush on Dana Carvey when I was a kid, and to this day am wildly attracted to hilarious but down to earth guys like him.
I have a feeling mike Myers isn’t the only one who “borrowed” from Dana. One of the best SNL cast members ever and imo I put him up there with the Chevys and Steve Martins
THE MASTER OF DISGUISE!!!!! Love this guy...
Loved him as Garth in Wayne’s World 1 and 2 👍!!!
Good Stuff for Dana to share that with us....especially life beating him up, then realizing how fortunate he is in the big picture
I remember Bob Odenkirk on a Mr. Show commentary being pissed that he thought Myers stole the Lorne impression from him....interesting.
You wouldn't happen to recall which episode it was, would you?
Veddy interesting.
One of my favorite (but short) scenes of all time fro Dana was on Bullet Proof as the Hotel keep...
Totally real character.
Excellent interview that’s why I watch stern he asks what people want to kmow
Best interviewer in the business.
Boy if Dana could have played dr.evil it would of been awesome
I love this guy....there, I said it!!! so talented and seems to be a gem of a person....
The Austin Powers series would have been so much better had Mike found a way to weave in Dana.
A clip of Howard letting the guest talk wow. Dana is a very interesting person I have seen him in other interviews.
