I never comment on youtube but I consider this as a more spiritual outlet (or rather as more indicative of my personality as a whole) and so, I want to thank you for everything you've made me consider about the world.

Hope you are recovering alright Nick. Nice to see bits of old Blighty, I may be able to visit Europe by the end of the year. Paris is top of the list but also to check out Manchester & Edinburgh. Thankyou for the video, was lovely to see you.

the HSBC 'hand' in the advert seems like a weird parallel to adam smith's concept of the invisible hand

This is like the overlap of the tourist gaze with factual inaccuracies and language games. It is a triumphant clash of someone who claims Edinburgh has his own but knows very little of its culture. When do you ever hear the local Edinburgh person saying trams were a great thing!

The one time I’ve tried to utilise the British Transport Police is during a long Saturday train journey where football hooligans were being extremely antagonistic to passengers, doing drugs in the toilet. It was a scary experience. By the time I was called back by them they were clearly well on their way. So although presenting something of a totalitarian image, it’s all just a smokescreen for an utterly useless service.

Interesting video. The more I see and hear of the UK these days, the more thankful I am that I don't live there. I too immediately thought of Scarfolk upon seeing those posters! Who was it that said something to the effect that 'the greater the decline in a society, the more ludicrous its laws become'? That is certainly reflected in the increasing criminalization of the populace in England. Still, Edinburgh looked nice! ;) Greetings from Madrid.

A little surprised to hear that ultra-reactionary (and darling of the dissident right) Thomas Carlyle is a hero of yours Momus!

As a brilliant Scottish stylist, a playful humourist, a provocateur and an aesthete, not for his political views. He influenced everyone from Oscar Wilde to William Morris, Whistler to Wyndham Lewis. Sartor Resartus is such a fun read.

@@momasu By replacing political, ethical, and religious categories with aesthetic categories, literary historians have attempted to modernise Carlyle, to divert attention away from his embarrassing “messages”, and to make him acceptable to an audience that believes only in “myths” and “metaphors”.
Carlyle’s “new religious myth,” Valley argues, has to be understood “simply” as a form of self-expression, not as an account of the nature of things accompanied by the ethical injunction that submission to the nature of things is the only course of action that brings peace of mind.

Name one person who's been 'cancelled', apart from maybe Katie Hopkins, who openly advocated a final solution, and Jeremy Corbyn, who is very much 'woke'. Maybe you're guilty of trying to 'cancel' Priti Patel, Nick.
