What is the FILTHIEST your camera gear has EVER been? Stories below!
left my camera in a bag filled with sand and water. needless to say the camera was ruined by an overwhelming amount of sand and water from the beach where i was shooting :P
LDM that sucks
Two words, baby, diaper
My drone! lol
Beach sandstorm. Ugh. Took FOREVER to clean!
Carving your name on your sensor is the easiest way to watermark your photos.
Modern problems require modern solutions
Mike Smith reading this hurt
hahaha!
I did this method works perfect for me.
i accidentally shoot a laser beam to my camera sensor, now i have my own watermark
Hi Peter, greetings from Scandinavia. I clean my sensor myself. You forget to mention that battery Must be not less than 50% because if mirror flips back during your cleaning it will be huge damage. Cheers
Absolutely an essential check before undertaking this process. I always use a fresh battery before any sensor cleaning - it just is not worth the risk of that mirror flapping closed whilst you have anything inside. You could be looking at a very expensive repair.
Unless you use a mirrorless...
don't shit yourself warpspeed
That's a lot of damage..
@@warpspeed9877 or a film camera...
This is a waste of time Peter just take the lens off and put it in the dishwasher smh 🤦♂️
I know right like i could have made my pizza rolls
Oh my god
*Pauses video, opens camera, carves name, resumes video*
I bought extended service protection from Geek Squad and when inquiring about having it cleaned up, the lady at the desk literally said "I wouldn't trust any of these guys to do anything with your camera." So here I am, thanks Peter! Lol
The Detherage Dialect lmao
I like to use steel wool on mine
Do you mean a Brillo pad
Yeah a nice little brush to the sensor has worked nicely for me.
I’ve found a wire brush works great
Give the images one hell of an effect....lol
No Barry he means steel wool....
Some things to add:
1. Make sure you check the web to see if other people have used the fluid you're using with good results. Some cleaning fluids will eat away some sensors so it's very important to use a fluid that others have successfully used with your camera model.
2. Use a fully charged battery.
3. Take test shots before to confirm it needs cleaning and after to see if you got it all.
f/22 shots of a bright clear cloudless blue sky work best for me if available at a focal length between 18 and 50mm. In a pinch you can use multiple handheld shots of a clean white wall or white a4 sheet of paper. (Anything blotches or specs that move between shots is not on the sensor.)
4. Light pressure only when cleaning. No scrubbing.
5. You can clean the sensor with dust free pec pads wrapped around a flat piece of plastic that is the right size. When I've tried it's taken multiple (many, many) repetitions, so if you can get the proper pads from a reputable source at a reasonable price that's going to be better.
6. Don't freak out if you think you scratched your sensor. Unless you used a faulty swab, applied a lot of force, or used a fluid that's eaten away your sensor, chances are it's just streaking. Repeat the cleaning, and go easier on the fluid.
How can a fluid eat up a sensor when its literally covered with a glass layer? 🤔
learn so much from you my friend! :)

I see it more like a heart surgery.
Except it's not, the sensor is covered by multiple layers of glass
Hello. Thanks for your videos. I am a fan of yours from Morocco. I would like to say that you should have warned your viewers about battery levels before opening up their shutter and putting anything between its blades. You know, if the battery goes off with anything in there, the shutter is gone.
Thanks.
Thank you so much for making this video! My sensor is filthy and I've been having to clone out spots in every photo for months now. Didn't have to confidence to clean it myself until I stumbled upon this video in my notifications. It's been great watching your channel grow!
I hope you enjoyed your time in my home country, Kenya
Hello from the US! Nice channel btw!
The best explanation I've ever seen about the sensor cleaning!!! Thank you, Peter!
"You wanna expose your sensor as little as you can"
Mirrorless shooters: *._.*
I don't understand it. Can you please explain it to me?
Instructions weren't clear. Ended up power washing my sensor.
Mine has never been too filthy, maybe I haven't been to enough exciting/exotic places..
Next on my Bucket List: get my camera gear as dirty as possible. Lol

Do some urbex
Is it like some scar thing? The dirtier your gear, you become more of an expert.
Don't forget to drop it a few times, to have some interesting scars, but not from too high, otherwise you will have no camera anymore.
Thanks for this visit as your cleaning the sensor video was the first one I saw and not many people talk about cleaning the sensor on the DSLR camera.
Thank you peter. I always love your personality and your descriptions / mindframe! Means so much to me.
Benefit of being a broke photographer: only having 1 lens so you never have to expose the sensor to the outside world.
Also I'd need a metric ton of eyedrops in the dessert thx genes.
Relatable
You should always blow before whipping! Otherwise you could be scratching the lens with potential pieces of sand on the lens, or stuff like that! Best wishes for your lenses further on! 😆
Albert Henriques that might be why the filter on my lens is so scratched up. Thanks for the info.
I was going to say that. Yes... remove any coarse particles from the front element by blowing it off with air before wiping it with a cloth.
I was thinking the same thing!
No, Mr. Wannabe blows AFTER swiping 6:06. Note how he swipes with the dirty part of the sheet. He's so fake.
Blowing lens first is good practice. That was probably just missed in the heat of the moment. Apart from that he was spot on knows his stuff. I have cleaned the sensor DIY style years ago but eventually bought some swabs.
Thanks for the help Peter. I’m new to making videos and right now they’re not that great, but I’m starting to see a change because I’ve been watching your videos.
LOVE the channel my man! keep on grinding to 2mil while helping every one of your viewers up their editing skills!

Do, I need to? YES, I DO!!!
Thanks Peter for the amazing videos. :)
bwhats up to you too Pete.
Awesome! Needed this for sure. Thanks man! Watching your videos has got me back into shooting photos again.
Awesome video! Cleaned my sensor today with these steps and everything looks and works so much cleaner!
Just a note to others, you should only open the sensor with a full/near full battery as it eats power and for sure you dont want the mirror flipping back down mid way through cleaning due to power loss!
I don't know why I'm not getting more notifications from your channel. I subscribed and I clicked on the bell icon and stuff and still don't get any notification.
Great tip about the hot shower sensor cleaning prep. Excellent way to get all that dust down beforehand. Thanks, Pete makes total sense!
This was extremely helpful, I didn't know any of this stuff. Thank you!
11:13 He put a camera in a camera? :O
Galactic Brix lol 😂😂😂
I think he put this thing on the camera while the lens was on.
I think he just had the body recording with only the loupe on.
Hey Pete, about the steam room method, won't the humidity in the air be a problem itself for the sensor? Won't the sensor get little water particles on it if it's open at the time?
Moisture is a bigger worry than micro dust particles. I think a carefully and tactically used fan set up would serve a better purpose
Hans Tonra you want it steamy not soaking wet, 3-5 mins depending on the size of your bathroom. Also use this technique for phone screen protectors.
I agree 100%. locking in humidity will only lead to fungus growing inside your gear. I'll live with the dust for now thanks. its so simple to remove dust in lightroom why expose yourself to this risk.
Good point man. Curious. Nice channel btw!
You don't clean your sensor immediately after you turn off the shower. The humidity pulls the dust from the air and sticks it to the surfaces. Wait a minute for the moisture to fall and then enter and expose your sensor.
Peter makes everything more pleasant to watch, hands down!
Awesome video as always! :D
Your energy is awesome, dude. These videos are so helpful. Thank you!

One tiny complaint: The rocket blower you linked to on your cleaning video is different than the one you actually used.... and it's cheap junk. Other amazon reviews testify exactly what happened with mine: broke immediately with first use.
I wanted to support you and use your affiliate link, but had to return it and buy the name brand blower. Hope this reaches you and helps you and your fans! (Happy to be one of them) 🙌🏼😁
Thanks Peter! I've barely used my 80D but it's handy to know what to do in the future! Keep up the great work buddy!

Yeah, I personally like to put on the red mood lighting, step into the nice hot steamy bathroom and squeeze my red rocket. Never lived till you get it all dirty and squeeze it all clean.
I wouldn't be recommending to clean sensitive electronic gear in a steamy bathroom...... Imagine all the moisture that will get inside that body, all over the sensor and throughout the internal components.
Nathan William and when you take your camera outside in the winter and shoot, and then bring it back in your house, what do you think happens?
that water in air alias condensation is destiled water if you arent go in to a sauna with your camear it should just dissapier from your camera- by the way destilled water is not condust for electricity...

Thanks, Peter for this video. Those dark spots can reek havoc on photos. I know that can be cleared up in post, but when you're on a roll capturing, that can be torturous!
Those swabs at gold, so consider me signed up & sold on those, because those are perfect for the sensor.

Thanks for the video. I will clean my camera tomorrow. Happy New Year!
I clean sensors at my work, what a lot of people fail to realize is you're not actually cleaning the sensor, you're cleaning the IR filter which is a piece of glass, you can be surprisingly rough with them to get grub off it and it will be fine (the 1DX MK II, A7R MK II and some other cameras have a coating on the glass inside, DO NOT USE CONVENTIONAL CLEANING METHODS ON THESE CAMERAS)
LukeBatemanPhoto was going to say. Most cameras have a glass layer Iver the sensor.
yup, it's pretty funny how overly careful people are. I mean, look at mirrorless. There, whenever you change a lens, your sensor is exposed. And if you do lots of different kinds of photos - e.g. tele, 'normal' lengths and macro, you're going to get a speck of dust on there sooner or later.
How about D750? What would be good to get in europe or through Aliexprss and so?
Hello😄, does this mean mean that sony A6000 sensor can be cleaned by a microfiber cloth?
@@iamax8307 Blow air first so that you don't make scratches with debris and use something clean that is made for lenses / sensors (like a microfiber cloth).
"carving your name in it" damn, i almost spit my coffee
Thank you for showing me the manual clean and flip up with the wrench screen. That helps me a lot. Cheers.
Genius ideas my man! I love the energy by the way. Cheers bud!
don't you get condensation into your camera if you clean it in a steaming hot room?
Opening your gear in a steamy moisture laden room will only lock moisture inside your gear so fungus will grow inside your camera. I'll put my faith into spot removal in LightRoom
Peter, everyday on your channel is a learning experience. 🙏
I appreciate that you posted this video. Thanks so much for sharing. I know someone that cleaned his own sensor and ruined it and had to buy another camera. I thought it was more complicated than it is. Glad I got to see the inside of it. Not sure I'd clean my own sensor (I live right near a Nikon service center). But someday I may be in a pinch and may have to. I can't be away from my camera in wedding season so I may need to in the future.
I clean mine with some dishwashing liquid and a scrubber :)
I just came from that video too cheers.

this is by far the best gear cleaning video i've ever seen bro!
Thank you very much.
I have had this lovely piece of lint in all of my photos for the past 12 years
and have never had the courage to lock up the mirror to clean off the sensor.
So I would just photoshop it out of all my images.
And I wasn't going to pay someone to do such a simple job either.
So over the last 2 months I have been slowly buying up swabs, spray, microfibre cloths and air blower as cheap as could of eBay and FINALLY cleaned my sensor. It worked perfectly and only cost me about $5 in bits and pieces. After seeing that little fluffy line of lint for all those years, I now kind of miss it.
Thanks for making me even more scared to clean my own sensors!! Great video, though!
Would you still recommend cleaning it even though the camera cleans itself
Justin Edmonds i'm curious about this to
yes it does it vibrates the sensor
Your cleaning lesson was very helpful. Thank you.

#TMT Why to shoot in RAW format?
Весела Илиева raw gives you the most information out of your picture so you can edit it more freely
some guy thanks
JPG tosses away the majority of image information in order to make the file size a lot smaller, giving you less dynamic range and color range to work with. No to mention the compression artifacts that JPG introduces even at the highest compression settings. JPG should only be used for the very final result after editing the image. Of course, if you are happy with the shots straight out of camera with the scene settings applied and you don't want to edit your shots, JPG is fine.
Damn i remember when he had like 120k
Peter thank you for your time and making these videos for all of us climbing up. You rock my friend! Hopefully I can meet you at some point. Come to Las Vegas after the world reopens. Cheers!
Thanks for this vid Peter i've been looking to cleaning mine on my 60D.
i think sony users have to clean more often.
+1 to this
Because the sensor is very close to the mount and the sensor is usually exposed while on a DSLR you have the sensor deeper inside the body hidden behind a mirror AND shutter.
One of the reasons I’m hesitant on buying a second lens, if I have it I’ll have to change and expose the sensor
Wyvern Apalis it’s almost always good to have multiple lenses and I wouldn’t worry about exposing the sensor as changing lenses doesn’t take long
Wyvern, you should really get over this fear quickly. Cameras are meant to be used--you're just missing out by not actually using your gear. Almost all photographers change lenses regularly with no serious problems--you might just have to do what this video suggests once a year or so. Or, if you're the nervous type, you send it away to Canon or whoever to have them do it.
Also, about the Sony vs. Canon thing, I actually always had to clean my sensor more on my Canon 5DII than any mirrorless I've used, for whatever reason.
Now i want to stare at that sensor for no reason ...tho my camera is new
Great Video. Thanks for the detailed tips on cleaning the camera.
Dude thanks so much man! Didn’t know my canon 60d had the option in the menu to clean out the sensor itself. I had 3 visible spots showing on my camera for months and I procrastinated trying to clean it. I even used the air compressor on my sensor when I wasn’t suppose to. After I followed your instructions my camera is clean and ready to shoot some more

Cool, there are tons of videos about sensor cleaning explaining wrong procedures but this is very good, I would probably add a disclaimer which says that you have to use each side of the swab only one time but the procedure you explained is actually very good!

You know, just to see how it turns out.

Morons, a shower running on full heat for five minutes will get nowhere close to "steamy" and if you don't have enough common sense to not put steam into your camera body anyway you deserve to break your sensor.

Saw a couple of your videos and was very impressed great content! Just subbed!👍
what's up everybody?!!

Hey Peter! Your instructional videos are great but I think we have to be exceptionally careful when dealing with the camera sensor. I believe firmly that one should NEVER touch our sensors unless we're perfectly qualified to do so. If we do have to clean the sensor, I agree that we should only use swabs and proper sensor cleaning liquids. Nothing else. However, I do disagree with a few of the actions here...
1. When you put the swab into the sensor you kinda used a bit of force to press down on the sensor and clean it. I really don't think you should do that as even though you're pressing on the anti-aliasing filter, because of the weight you're putting on something so fragile, you could cause the coating of surface of the sensor to become quite uneven. Instead, you could consider using less force to wipe across the sensor's surface.
2. Do NOT use the same swab to wipe across the sensor a second time! That is the BIGGEST mistake that someone could ever do while cleaning their sensor. This is because, the first time your swab goes across it picks up dust, particles or dirt. By reintroducing that swab onto your sensor, not only could you leave some residue behind from what it picked up before, but the worst that could happen is that the swab drags those particles across the sensor... and you end up with a scratched surface.
I think we should all be careful with our sensors and whenever possible try our dearest best to not touch it. It is SUPER expensive to replace a sensor/fix the surface and I don't think any of us would want to be in that position.
Matthew Lim if you own a $4,000 plus camera, I think it's better to just send it away for cleaning once or twice per year as required. Why even f*** with it in the first place.
I totally agree with you! The sensor replacement could cost almost as much as another camera! But I think Peter's video is out there for those who would like to try cleaning it themselves and are learning to care for their own gear. Furthermore, when changing lenses in a really dusty place while on assignment or holiday you might be forced to do it yourself! No harm putting an educational video out there :)
Nothing wrong with applying a bit of pressure to the swab, I do it all the time and my cameras don't get damaged. If you don't apply any pressure, the sensor doesn't get cleaned.
he only swabbed once he explained you could swipe again and showed flipping the swab over.
Great tips there Peter. Many thanks. Mike
Fantastic idea:running the hot water in the shower for 5 minutes!! My wife smokes a LOT - I know there are teeny little strands of crappola that float around the room 24/7. I _NEED_ a "clean" room to do this. I know I've got "spots" on my sensor from foolishly flipping the mirror up because I wanted to see the sensor. Very grateful for the video. Love your work!!
