God I miss that gentle woo-woo sound of these washers. My mom had a 1964 Whirlpool washer and dryer set she got when we were kids and I will never forget that trademark whirlpool sound. That set lasted her almost 25 years through some very heavy usage.

Coming back to this video it’s interesting to see how little these changed from this time till the end of the belt drive production in the mid 80s. My 1985 whirlpool has all the quintessential sounds of a typical belt drive,though this 63 has a more pronounced wig-wag sound and buzz-click sound going into spin. What other washing machines were still using solenoids into the mid 80s or non-reversing motors ? This is what makes these machines classic . They’re unmistakable sounds and their great wash action. Spinning was not the fastest, but also not detrimental either.. To me, these will always be classics among classics .

Good news is I found a way to get this machine up and going again, bad news is it’ll be a completely different console. ScantPear parted out a 1977 Whirlpool Mark 18 set, in the process of trying to arrange shipping so I can get the consoles along with other miscellaneous hardware to mount them to the porcelain top. Really don’t 2ant to do this, but it’s the only option left at this point. Only difference is it’ll have a 4 minute drain, definitely will have that breathing sound when in neutral drain.
Same, despite never growing up with these types of machines. Yeah, newer machines don’t use much water at all, may save on water but certainly won’t save clothes since they are just being thrashed back and forth in little water.
@@salsasoul4112 that ‘drumming’ sound is coming from the upper bearing, wanted to replace it but didn’t have the bearing puller and installer tool. It worked enough for a ‘show and tell’ so to speak.
A machine built during a time when American's knew how to freaking build quality products and that can last for years and years with a little TLC. I love this set and all of your videos! Keep up the amazing work!

Reason why they don’t make machines like this is the government is too involved with everything these days, cheap and careless consumers, and corporate greed is why machines aren’t made like this anymore plus a machine like this would be anywhere from $1000 to $1500 and no one would want to spend that kind of money on something that can only hold 8 pounds of laundry since everyone literally needs a machine to wash a damn comforter but many people forget comforters didn’t exist back in the 60’s so a tub that could hold 8 to 9 pounds of laundry was more than plenty.
Not from this era of washing machines that were produced. But it doesn't sound like these washing machines today. The ones now sound like they going too break at any min. And the loud cranking sound they make today after the water comes on or stops. Or after the cycle of washes. Just amazed

Whirlpools with the standard and Super Surgilator have aggressive and strong agitation. Nothing today can compare, even Speed Queen doesn’t have all that aggressive of agitation despite a transmission with a 180 degree arc.

Robert if you’re like me I really love this Washer I’m so glad I still have that little green avocado portable. Sounds and washes like this one only a small version.
I actually plan on making a video of that machine sometime within the next week since I’ll be installing the new damper pads on it and just got it’s matching dryer up and running after it being apart for about 2 weeks since I did some cleaning and painting to the inside of it.

What a beautiful old machine, they sure considered the wow factor with the fancy chrome trim and panel light, as well as heavy construction compared to the junk passed off to consumers today. Operation differs a little from the Maytags I’m familiar with over the years. It was interesting to see the various steps of the full wash cycle.
Whe Whirlpool and Kenmore machines have a bit more operations to them compared to the Maytag’s since there’s a 2 minute neutral drain then it engages into the spin. Also, everything is built into the timer compared to a Maytag where you manually have to select the wash and or spin speeds.
@@seana806 after the first time I changed a belt on an older Kenmore washer I had much more appreciation in the simplicity of the Maytag washers back then.
When I raise enough money, I’ll start building machines like these again but they won’t be cheap but hopefully people will realize how bad the machines from Whirlpool are and recognize the quality and engineering. Only way to make them affordable is to use fully automated stamping presses for the cabinets and various other components on the machine.
My aunt who lived on the second floor above us had a brown whirlpool convertible in the basement and this is the closest washer on UA-cam that sounded like hers it had a white agitator with a metal cap and a white filter like yours The color of the machine was brown not sure what year it was from. Sunday morning at 6 AM was her wash day. All I can do is think of her when I watch the videos of this washer
I was very lucky to get this set and a few people on AW inquired but never went through on getting this set and since I only live 65 miles away from where Strictlybojack on AW lives I arranged a time on July 25th 2020 to go get the set and the rest is history as they say.
@@isaac24 they are still around it’s just people (mainly collectors) are buying them all up along with people who are educated on how modern appliances are junk so everyone is buying them all up. At least the Maytags from the 60’s and 70’s will be around for quite sometime since the only thing that ever seems to go on them is either the belts or pump and that’s about it and yes other things can go wrong as well such as what happened with your Maytag but those failures are quite rare on Maytags.

Wow.. this machine reminds me of the Inglis Royale of the sixties, here in Canada, Inglis was the Canadian name for washers and dryers, stove and fridg., made by Whirlpool.... The Inglis Royale according to a good friend of mine Paul is the same thing at the Imperial Mark XII like mine but with the Inglis name and different lense on the lighted part of the control panel but otherwise is the same machine. How the buttons work is you select a cycle, pull the timer out until it stops, push the knob in to start and that’s literally all there is to it and is very simple to use and the Lady Kenmore used a similar setup in the US as well.

I just spent $1500 on a new GE washer and dryer, and although they seem smarter in detecting dampness and auto-filling, etc, the dryer has developed a light but noticeable thump on every turn after just one use, so I now have to wait for them to send me a new one. These look so stable, tough, torquey, and heavy! Even during the spin cycle, the 'box' seems like it's embedded in cement! Buyers remorse? I don't know. 1957 Chey small block Belairs look great and solid, too, but I would take one cross country? They are noisy, rattle, squeak and 8 mpg....
@@GranMastaDee don’t particularly care for tri 5 Chevrolets, or any late 50’s GM product, especially the 1958 to 1964 GM cars with the shitty x-frame chassis. Plus, GM guys and girls have BIG egos.
Most any older machine will clean better, just have to use the correct amount of detergent and use warm or hot water. Can’t pry these off my cold dead fingers if someone tried. Modern machines really are junk.

Going to keep the old consoles, may use them as a nightlight since that’s what some people did on AW over the years.

More than likely were Whirlpool models like mine from 1963 and other Whirlpools that had similar consoles up until 1969.

Things back then were simply overbuilt on purpose which is why they sound and function differently.
The best part is that it's blue! I had a yellow washer in the 80s and lots of white machines, this is so cool 😎
It’s turquoise, not too far off from being blue. Yellow aka harvest gold was made up until 1981, avocado green was made up until at least 1980.

That's a real washer that really gets the clothes clean with super strong agitation and in way much less time than new models.

@@Bob-ml1mv the agitator freewheels while in neutral or spin, won’t affect anything in operation.

This washer knows how to do the job alright they will be clean and they will smell good
Indeed, reason why they came out with those Downey Unstoppables is to mask the scent from HE washers since they don’t wash or rinse all that well.

I had a GE laundry pair and the washer sounded very much like this. My Samsung is so quiet i can't hear it!
