Hey kids! Its time, its time.... its GOJIRA TIME! You all have been requesting some Gojira guitar lessons here on Weekend Wankshop for a while now, and episode 204 seems like the perfect time for Uncle Ben to break down one of my favorites.... Ocean Planet from From Mars to Sirius!
This is one of those riffs that has ZERO accurate tabs, lessons, or covers out there. A lot of time, Gojira's riffs are just more simple than a lot of people make them out to be. This riff uses one of their trademarks, simple one finger inverted power chords on the bottom strings. Its simple, but so is a sledgehammer! I watched SO MANY live videos of this to ensure that this lesson was accurate.... It may seem oddly simple, but watch live videos and you'll see exactly what i'm talking about in this main intro riff!
You'll need to tune down 1 whole step to play this, D G C F A D. Conjure up a nice mid-heavy high gain tone with a little reverb and chug away with me!
Also, stay tuned for STUFF GOJIRA DOES coming really soon to my channel!
Gibson Les Paul with Bare Knuckle Brute Force pickups
Kemper Profiler, Tone Crate Brody Uttley signature pack
Thanks for learning the real way to play Ocean Planet! What other Gojira songs do you want to learn on Weekend Wankshop?!
Ben Eller thanks for the help ben!
all of them.
The Heaviest Matter of the Universe.... or Remembrance and it's awesome outro
How about that epic solo from Mastodon's "The Motherload", Uncle Ben?
The hybrid picking is driving me nuts!
"Where Dragons Dwell", the intro riff. is one of my favorites, Beautiful and heavy...
Maybe do a “Things Gojira does” video
8:38
@le254athe6rbe3lt toight
He did it!
The madlad actually did it
Thank you for giving him this idea because it's hilarious
Where The Dragons Dwell has tons of great riffs.
Beckoning Oblivion it’s an amazing song but it doesn’t have TONS of riffs it’s literally like 2 riffs over and over again lol
@@Twenty1st true! fun technique though in the one part
Charlie Charlie I agree
One of my favorites from Gojira! ❤❤
The act of dying is really interesting and full of juicy riffs
Do you mean The ART of Dying?
Thanks, uncle Ben. You're the best!
Another great job! You really bring out the subtle moves needed to play the riffs correctly in a thorough but unintimidating fashion. Unbelievable quality👍
Black Crown Initiate shirt! Very good taste Uncle Ben 👍🏽
amazing thank you! all those tabs didn't "feel" right, but this!
Hey Ben.. It'd be really great if you can upload lessons for some of the Guthrie Govan's solos from the Steven Wilson's songs like Watchmaker, Drive Home, Ancestral, Regret #9. They are all amazing and hard to figure out. I'm sure a lot of people would like to learn those solos. :)
Have you considered the String Butler for your Les Paul? Just bought one for mine some weeks ago, and it's amazing! The D and G tuning holds so much longer!
PlayMusic! No, but it is intriguing! This one definitely suffers from the out of tune G problem.
@@BenEller - You'll love it! :) And btw, thanks for all the great videos!
Love your channel man. Good stuff!!!
"Sometimes these french bois just like to make noise... it's okay, noises are neat"
In Stuff Gojira does the first cord starts at 3? That feels better but in this video you start at 4. Great lesson.
Fuck. I love Gojira so much.
You mentioned morbid angel......how bout a little lions den from covenant?
Gojira stuff is so fun to play. But I'm having a really hard time getting that e3 pinch harmonic. I can do it when taking my sweet time, but during a fast pattern I just seem to pinch wrong. Either the string is just muted or the lower frequencies cover most of the harmonic. I'm trying to practice to get better at finding the right hand position for it, but progress is pretty slow.
cheers sensai
6:50 “oOooo” lmao
Do Stranded!
Hey, I've been trying to learn 5150 by Van Halen for a few months, and it's one of the hardest things I've tried to learn. But I couldn't help but notice the videos I watch looks nothing like what Eddie is actually doing. Any chance you could check it out?
6:43 Oooh lmao
Is that an R8 or R9?
Locoandchooch it’s basically whatever they called the Traditional before they created the Traditional. It’s a 2009.
I'm totally addicted to Dead and Lovely. But I watched irreversible and I'm not sure if I'm ever going to feel normal again. But anyways. I think Uncle Ben should do a breakdown of Mastodons Tread lightly cuz I love the riffs in that song but can't get it to sound right
BIGGY BALLS & MOUTHFULL PRODUCTIONS Hahahaha man, I TRIED warning you not to watch it! Ugh. If I could erase that movie from my memory banks, I would!
Tabs in web = russian tv
Heaviest matter of the universe is so good, I don't feel like I've found an accurate version of the whole song yet. Would love to see your take on it.
Can't wait for your discussion on the intricacies of muted upward pickscrape harmonic thangs
Born in winter has some really cool looking tapping riff that I'd like to see analyzed. Also flying whales and silvera would be fun to learn.
If I'm not mistaken you need 2 guitarists to play that riff properly, could be wrong though
just learned born in winter, its a sick riff to play
More Gojira!!! Uncle Ben is preaching the truth
2:26 Uncle we need Morbid angel riffs
Heaviest Matter please. There is one ok video that I'm using, but I can't help but feel a couple of things are off in it.
While I really do love and immensely enjoy the weekend wankshops, can we please have a lesson on recording guitar videos Uncle Ben? You're really one of the only people I trust who will make the process easy to understand, just like all those intimidating solos that turned out to be totally achievable.
Stranded, Vacuity, Backbone, Born In Winter, The Art Of Dying, The Gift of Guilt, The Way of All Flesh. It's hard to pick a favorite.
Pray , I have not tried to pick the song out myself but there no good proffessional Tab books so ? you are extrodinary accurate in everything you do so any Gojira song would be great. By the way I’m sure they were influenced of the band Magma or Weidorje writing pray. Only Pain is good too. I me myself should probably pitch low muted guitar up one octave it much easier to hear notes that I’m not sure of. I recommend the program Riffstation that they give away right now for free now . Super easy to remove vocals or single out guitartracks for example remove the 2 super loud rhythm guitar on the Cowboys from hell solo. It was quit easy to copy after that. I don’ t rely on any offical books or tabs completly normally. No wounder they are provlems to transcribe things when muted power chords can sound almost a halfstep higher. For example the B5 chord in the pre chorus of puppets that you can see still in many tabs. I try to listen to one channel when guitars ate overdubed for example some isolated track with randy rhoads reveals that he play different notes some places then you have to pick the one you favor. I think it’s the same regarding to some megadeth rhythms guitars I worked on before. So no wonder Tabs differ a lot even with isolated track and software you can still be unsure about whats going on. I’m from Sweden some spelling are gonna suck.
Hey, uncle Ben, how about a Matt Pike video?
Thank you so much for this Uncle, I had no idea you liked Gojira! From Mars to Sirius is my favorite album of theirs so seeing this is an utter delight. I’d really love it if you could a lesson for Oroborus, or really anything from The Way of All Flesh, all the songs on that record confuse me to no end on what is happening half the time.
That tasty tapping riff in Oroborus!!!
Esoteric surgery OR adoration for none...would be interesting to study...
I was not expecting this from you Ben hahaha. This was also the first gojira song I ever heard.
Hopefully not the last??! Have you listened to more Gojira since your comment, Hareesh?
Yo is that my guitarist from Prodigium? Hareesh Kumar Shanggar?
A video on explosia would be awesome! I can't really get it right and it seems to me that most people on UA-cam play it wrong
One riff I've never been able to get down correctly is the outro riff for "The Art of Dying". Those are strange chords and the 2 guitars play them differently, almost like the dissonant chord in this video. It would be very helpful to have a lesson on that!
It's the same as in this song. One plays it 2 frets higher i believe
@@Celatra yeah I know, the problem is to find the actual chords, I can't figure out what strings and frets they're actually playing lol
@@roccoblackness I think it's D then a AC Athen D A tap to C
And the second riff I Don' even
Powerchorded they are
@@roccoblackness then the other would do F#-A
Maybe it's just me
I would love to see you do "Clone" anytime.
To Sirius please! These noises in second riff are really cool
Oh holy shit you actually mentioned Morbid Angel here. Thanks for that mention. MA's later albums REALLY need the attention, especially with how much Gojira is getting with what is basically MA's Tucker-era formula. Hah, I made that pun again.
Sounded fantastic Uncle Ben. Would love to see some Neurosis riffs, or Bongripper :-)
Toxic Garbage Island or L'Enfant Suavage? :)
Show us how to play THE ART OF DYING!
Lol. I was playing it right the whole time. That's rare
Can you do the solo rhythm track for The Frayed Ends of Sanity please? Listen to the the AJFA deluxe track of it titled (The Frayed End of Sanity Work in Progress Rough Mix). The solo isn't there so it's pretty clear to hear.
Thanks for posting this one Ben, I'm looking forward to working on it this weekend. One Gojira song I would love to learn would be Global Warming. The tapping riffs are excellent. Could you do that one soon?
That frame of you with the crown is killing me.
Preferably all of them. I can never find good Gojira tabs
ESOTERIC HEALING. From their Way of All Flesh album. Those are some bad ass riffs..........
Esoteric surgery noob
My bad. Excuse the fuck out of me...........
Could you please break down a solo from Cause of Death by Obituary? My personal favourites are Chopped in Half or Infected. Thank you!
Auto likes cause Gojira
Hey Uncle Ben, with the upcoming movie "Bohemian Rapsodey" I would like to learn the lead guitar to it. You're awesome as always, thanx!!
Please do "Remembrance"! That one is almost near impossible to hear what's going on!
Yes. I am so happy right now.
I don't know if I prefer the Gojira riff or the intro song now.
Ahhh got step dad's ol' Les Paul out do ya?
Gojira is so fucking metal
Your intro is a reference to mega man and castlevania. Any chance of a weekend wankshop for any video game songs?
Can you do one on that super fast verse riff of Carcass's Heartwork of which no accurate tabs seem to exist?
Definetly do carcass!
I love Gojira. One of my favorite bands. I'm really looking forward to seeing more videos of their songs broke down. Thanks uncle Ben.
I was an industrial keyboardist...and, a pretty terribly self-taught ‘guitarist’. But, I sure do like you. Cause you actually KNOW theory. And, mind you, I’ve the utmost respect for bassists, drummer and guitarists-period. But, I especially LLOOOVVVVEEEEE Joe and Mario. You teach, though. Thusly, making it possible for me to actually follow you as I was a classically trained pianist for well over a decade. Anywho......thank ya. 👩🏻💻🤛🏼
Always great lessons my friend! I dont really listen to Gojira but I might now. Cool sounds. See ya around! 🤘🏻😎🎸
Doesn't have to be identic, if it Sounds good,it's ok
G'nR's didn't play exactly like Dylan
as they did knocking o.heavens door
I love your obsessive research.
Thanks UB, I've never heard of these guys until this video and now I'm all turned on by them (their music?).
Their riffs are so heavy my back hurts.
We don't care what you play, we just care that you play!
Nah, I lied, we care what you play.
Just wish I could play as good as Uncle Benjammin
Thanks for making this vid! On the studio recording the slide part on the F string sounds like a slide from the 2nd fret to the 4th fret and slide back down to the 2nd fret. They way you do it doesn't match up with the song for some reason, maybe i am hearing it wrong and you're playing it right. idk
Hey, what kind of guitar and pickups are you using?
👌
Hello Uncle Ben, I can't seem to get the pinch harmonics on the E string in lower positions to sound at all, do you have any idea why? Is it maybe not enough gain or something? I can get the pinch harmonics on any other string though.
Clone or Love please
Sick video , but Uncle Ben c'mon ! You have a 5150 and you use the Kemper for a Gojira riff ?
Thank you for saying you're my best buddy, Uncle Ben. I feel loved :')
That's a sweet crunchy crank ...
From the wank bank......
Thanks again Guru Ben.....
Please breakdown an awesome intro riff from Farmer Boys song callled Here Comes The Pain.
Metal needs a Judas Priest to spread the truth. I’d answer if uncle Ben knocked on my door.
thanks for the break down, playing with the thumb helps on the majestic parts
Ben please help! I can’t for the life of me get the pinch harmonic on the E string, please any tips?

@@BenEller Thanks so much you rock!
@@BenEller I was trying to do a pinch on a palm mute lol, so I fixed that problem but I can’t get the pitch. Not even close 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Uncle, i literally can't pinch a note lower than the 7th fret e string. Everywhere else is fine
Dude, 10 minutes to explain how to play like 15 seconds.
6:45 ooooooh
Can you please do Global warming and Toxic garbage island , there are no legit tabs available online
Very well done. I played it so differently. Im absolutely gojiras biggest fan so...you know. Ill be watching any videos of them you put out
I’m pretty sure its illegal to upload accurate song tabs to the internet
Your rhythm and articulation of the end of the riff is really off. But great tone and video!
fuck this! where's DAVEY STRANGER!!!!
Christopher Davis hahaha as you may have been able to tell on last week’s Suspiria lesson, Davey has been on strict vocal rest due to a horrible sinus explosion.... I hear he’s been working on a special Christmas surprise though!
@@BenEller GOOD!!!!! im looking forward to the day of a full length. Davey Stranger music would be best be described as: "Romantik goth"-is the ultimate amalgamation of Peter Murphy (darkness), Robert Smith (pop sensibility, lipstick), Morrissey (tortured, whiney sexual ambiguity) Dave Vanian (gothic campiness) Ian Curtis (tragic pathos) but lacks the abject blasphemy of Roz Williams. Would make a fascinating topic of a film. im looking forward to an "Abysmally Grim Christmas" song.
@@BenEller would DAVEY STRANGER be up for being paid for doing a cover song?
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEOO, I love gojira and I always thought how this song is off for me when I play it..
Hey, that bands merch your wearing is local to me! Pretty cool to see on youtube
I’m like you and hyper analyse Gojira videos and had this almost entirely correct but thanks for clearing up the bits I didn’t know! Wish you had gone over the chords they use towards the end of the song though, that bit always throws me as it sounds on the record like each guitarist is playing ever so slightly different chords to each other so it’s really hard to discern 😩
does anyone know of any bassist vids that are as detailed as your guitar videos???
Can you do “where dragons dwell”. That be awesome 🙌🏻
Anything from The Way of All Flesh! Thanks for the vid
Backbone is hard to hear detail on too, be handy to see that one. Simple as it sounds
So the guitarists are harmonizing one o' them demolished chords.
i cant even play these, i dont know why im watching but i like it
This was a nice little surprise, I went on a massive Gojira guitar riffs binge a few months back, thanks a bunch for clearing this one up Ben!
Glad I'm not the only one who spends ages watch live videos to learn the right way to play riffs. Do love those inverted power chords too. Sylosis use them a fair bit as well over there last few albums. Good way to make e standard tuning sound heavier.
