    Bought our Tucson Sport 1.6T after watching this review (and test driving every CUV on the market) four years ago
    Still runs like a champ, no issues with almost 50k
    Thanks!

    Hyundai and Kia made a 180° with their brands with consistency in terms of quality and design that only Honda and Toyota had a monopoly on. It's amazing they accomplished this polished execution in a short amount of time.

    When I drove the Tucson I had some serious issues with turbo lag. I didn't say anything to my wife and passed her the keys to test drive it and when she got back she hated the lag. Of course she didn't know what turbo lag was, but she said she'd punch the gas and it wouldn't go for a couple of seconds. Scared her a bit.

    • @atl3630
      @atl3630 9 років тому

      +atl3630 but perhaps that was the dual clutch system...

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  9 років тому

      Unless it had eco mode selected this thing is lag free. You sure something was not up with it?
      If it had less than 15 miles dbw and fueling is not calibrated and learned yet. Throttle pedal is DEAD during that time.

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  9 років тому

      Its possible, but not normal. Were you high elevation?

    • @atl3630
      @atl3630 9 років тому

      I'm not sure how many miles were on the test drive. I'd bet more than 15. I wasn't high elevation. When I pulled out of the dealership and turned right I was worried about getting rear ended because when I pressed the gas the Tucson just sat there for about 2 seconds and then kicked in. That kind of thing kept happening during the drive. Then my wife experienced the same thing. I really liked the vehicle but that lag had me worried. Ended up getting the Mazda CX5 and I love it.

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  9 років тому

      +atl3630 that sounds like DBW throttle calibration not complete. Dead pedal and no response.

    I just found out something about the Hyundai turbo engines. The spark plugs maintenance schedule (Canada) for the 1.6T is REPLACE every 36,000km. I was really surprised and thought it may be a mistake since it's iridium spark plugs so I called a friend I trust at the service department (Hyundai dealership) and he said it wasn't a mistake. Although he didn't really understand why, he advise me to have one of them CHECK at 48,000km and see if they need to be changed. If not, he would advice to "push" it to 72,000km. If any of you are in contact with engineer staff at Hyundai, please ask them why we have/should replace spark plugs so often on 1.6T engines and share the info here please! Cheers!

    I've driven a 2016 Tucson for about a year now and have had none of the issues with the controls on the steering wheel or the bright LED on the blind spot detection button. I do agree that the scrolling on the touchscreen sucks and the pad on driver's side left elbow is horrible (my elbow started to ache after an hour long drive). Strange that your butt started to hurt... I find the seats to be very comfortable on long drives... every bit as good as my BMW. Plus, how can you beat heated and air conditioned seats?

    • @espedale
      @espedale 8 років тому +1

      I looked at this over the past week for you. My average is around 27 mpg. I drive 32 miles per day. Most of my commute is on the highway in stop and go traffic, but around 35% of my commute is moving on the highway and surface streets. The Tucson computer tells me that my average speed is 40 mph. I have the vehicle in sport mode while I am moving in fast traffic and in Eco mode when in stop and go traffic. Hope this helped.

    savagegeese : you can turn off the Power Tailgate in the options and it becomes manual. Weird that you didn't try that ? And this problem you have is but on of the only problems that Tucson 2015-2019 had besides sometimes rear door child locking mechanism not opening right away. Everything else on this car is superb in quality and refinement and definitely ages much better (the ergonomics of the interior and the outside chassy) than Mazda CX-5 (2015 and 2020 variants) and VW T-Roc.

    Great review as always. You guys are getting right review after review!
    I am in the market for a new car/suv for my wife, based on the reviews from this channel, it has motivated me to consider a Kia or Hyundai.
    I have noticed that a lot of the parts are shared between the two brands, and I could see this being an annoyance from the reviewer that continually sees the same thing over and over.
    HOWEVER, and this is a big however, it might be worth taking into consideration from the owner's perspective. When we settle on a vehicle, we have to live with it. So the real question should be, is it something that is well built, durable and you can life with it and enjoy it long term. Because the reality is that we will literally see the same thing every day, but it will be in the same vehicle, and when we settle on that vehicle, we won't care if its shared with another model, we didn't buy that model.

    I had one of these as a rental. I was not expecting much because I had an 08 Santa Fe and while it hauled the family adequately it was not satisfying to drive at all. The rental drove very nicely after i found the "sport" button and got it out of the "eco" mode. plenty powerful, roomy and like I said, drove very nicely. Very car like. Probably the entry model. i would definitely put this on my list if looking for a smaller SUVish vehicle.

      I have a 2018 Tuscon Value (with the Turbo engine)... 2016 through 2018 are all pretty much the same... they redesigned the Tucson for 2019 and I must admit it looks much worse in 2019 than the 2016-18 model years. One of the worst things about the 2019 Tucson... they superglued a tablet PC to the top of the dash... ya... the integrated touchscreen is no-longer integrated... it looks so damn cheesy in the 2019 Tucson. That and the 2019 Tucson doesn't have a Turbo engine option. I'm so glad I got the last of the Turbo engine, integrated-into-the-dash infotainment Tucsons out there!

    I'm looking for a new medium sized 2 row SUV probably next year sometime. The Tucson Sportage are smaller than I would like. The Lexus RX is on my list although the Ford edge sport with the 2.7 turbo is on the menu too. I'm wondering whether the Ford should even be in the running although it's a bit cheaper. Not sure there is anything else in that class ($42K range). Any thoughts?

    I have the 2016 limited turbo. I experience lack of acceleration sometimes. When I timed it once it was 2 seconds slower from 30-70km/h than usual. Same road, same driving mode. This is an occasional occurrence though. They couldn't do anything about it. After 2 months the air conditioning died. They repaired it, since then the dashboard has been squeaking. They did not put it back well. It needs to be fixed again. Coolant goes below minimum between regular maintenance services. I will ask what they have to say about this. So good luck to everyone who buys this product. This is my first and last Hyundai for sure.

    Interesting. So you say you'd go with a FWD Tucson with snow tires over an AWD even up there in Canada? Here in New England where we get a bit of snow as well, I've wrestled with this FWD with snow tires vs AWD option when considering what my next vehicle (possibly a Tucson) will be. If you're listening, can you expand on this at all? What's the pros and cons of either option in general and how it applies to the Tucson? Thanks. Love your videos! And those cinematic geese rock!

      +ron bZoom Is AWD nice yes and the on demand systems are less of a burden on MPG. But if you are not in crap conditions all the time does not make sense. I'd stick with FWD and snow tires unless you could get the AWD option for less than 1k.

    Great review! How's the steering? Past hyundais have been dead on center, and over assisted.

      The steering is great. I went from a BMW 335i to a 2016 Tucson Limited (out with the speeding tickets, in with the rock band equipment) and have zero regrets. It drives like a luxury car in my opinion.

      I test drove the CX-5 and went with a fully loaded Tucson Limited. Can't beat having air-conditioned seats in Southern California. Plus, the Tucson looks and drives better IMO. Everyone has a CX-5.

    Agree with you on the switch gear and clusters being similar. What annoys me is I have a 15 genesis, and a lot of the gear from that seems to be getting into their other vehicles. Nice for the lower end cars, but it annoys me. Makes me 2nd guess getting a 50k+ car again.

    They spend 15 million developing this engine? That's not a lot. In Europe, a company like Miele spends 500 million on developing a new washing machine. The budget Mercedes has is almost a few billion in R&D.

    No dual clutch or cvt transmission
    250+ HP
    AWD/4X4
    No European or domestic cars.

    funny I was looking at replacement tires for this on tirerack... most are about $200 each and more. The cheaper ones don't have good reviews. I am interested in this car... want the limited (for the leather and power passenger seat with height adjustment)... but not the giant wheels!!!

      +Iced T One difference that is important, is that the rear seat on the CX5 does not recline and happens to be almost uncomfortably upright. This is important to know if you plan on traveling long trips with passengers. They may not appreciate that. The rear seat on the Tucson reclines.. a nice amount.

    Here in Mexico and other countries Hyundai offers only the 2L for all trim levels, not only the lowest as in the U.S. And in their web page--in Mexico-- says after translation, "unequalled efficiency", "guarantees high efficiency". Gives 34.68 mpg city and 44.79 mpg highway--it Says. Which is very different from the U.S.'s at 23 mpg and 31 mpg. I feel as if Hyundai cheats on consumers from other countries offering not their best as if it were--like the 2L low trim on the Limited level. And its claim on fuel efficiency is a lie. It reminds me of VW and its diesel issue lies.
