Meat processors have too much power. Paying farmers less and charging consumers more. We need more local collectives and retail farmers for the sake of the consumer.

Im sorry. Im a butcher and it's all a scam to screw the rancher. There is no reason why the packer is getting more money for the cattle then the rancher. I dont know why but i believe it's fixing to change. It's gonna be hard for a little bit but i think it will get better.

    • @MrWaterbugdesign
      @MrWaterbugdesign 2 роки тому

Scam? Everytime someone is doing better than someone else it's called a scam. If the money is in packing then certainly rancher could create a group to start their own packing business. That would dry up sources for current packers and ranchers would get all that "scammed" money. But ranchers won't do that will they? Hell no. They want to be independent. Which is why they never have any power. The cost of independence is high. It's ranchers "scamming" themselves, not that they will ever understand that.

I don't understand why there cannot be a commision setup with cattle people across the US that will form a Company that can pull from any state resources in time of need. Here in Louisiana, its hot and dry buy plenty of grass to make hay that could be sent to Tx or other states needing it. Each state could help each other in time of need. Here in Louisiana along interstates there is Grass 3 to 5' tall and instead of bushhogging it, make hay and send to needing states.

Good video. Shame seeing so many cows going to market instead of raising calves, but I also understand dry conditions. We use the Joplin, Springfield, and Cattlemen’s Sarcoxie livestock markets here in Missouri to set prices and local markets to set meat prices. We got to stay in our lane, even if we sell a superior product people will not pay over a certain amount especially in these lean times. Yes marketing is key and be diverse. Good lesson and God Bless Y’all down there we are praying for good rain soon.

It makes sense that if grains are higher in the marketplace than feeder cattle would be cheaper in the market place. They are somewhat inversely correlated. Our slaughter cow market has been much stronger here in Northern MN vs last year. In my opinion, the sheep and goat markets are more correlated to the meat markets because they don’t have to be placed in a feedlot for 6 months or more to be ready to slaughter. Also there are no futures markets for sheep and goats so less ability for certain groups to manipulate.

I'm a fan of harvesting methane, then harvesting the chemicals from manure, including human waste. Human waste could be harvested for byproducts then be charcoalized for fuel.
Depending on circumstances the same could occur with livestock manure. Charcoalizing gets rid of pathogens making it safe to handle. Charcoal (biochar) is a great soil improver that improves water and air permeability and reducing downstream flooding.

The US Government will always act to benefit large corporations interest via lobbyists and the small farmer they have little concern with. That will change however as climate extremes take a massive bite out of large corporate profits and their costs go up substantially. But by the time, the government acts; it’s going to be far too late. It’s stupid to ignore climate especially with dark hide cattle that without shade, water and tolerable conditions plus grasses etc will not survive.

I’ve heard from cattle buyers that the young cow market is still strong. Also was informed that a very large packer who the folks who buy these cattle at these sales then subsequently sale them at are not taking momma cows and are full on older cattle therefore buyers just aren’t paying for them at this moment. Sale your young in good shape and fit heifer and steers keep your mommas if you can cause they’re not paying good next weeks to many sold.
The sheep market explosion you are highlighting outside of being cyclical I think it has to do with a new demand by certain groups of people and an over all education of the public with higher consumption in the private sectors, more people eating lamb and mutton.
I also agree there is squeeze happening somewhere on cattle producers, farmer and ranchers who are selling to wholesale markets and not tapping into there local food supply chains by eliminating the middle men. It feels like we’re ones that are floating the inflation. Prices may not be terrible but demand for beef is up, exports of beef were up, feed fuel and other Costs are way up. Price of beef is pretty mediocre compared to what I see folks paying for as consumers for beef and the variables that go into beef. Although I wouldn’t be surprised to see record beef prices in the spring or next years. Hard call. Shepherdess is right the name of the game is selling direct, networking locally and being prepared to ride out the next waves, especially the immediate one for us Texas farms who are in one dry pickle.

You should look at prices in west Texas. Lubbock area. I bought a Charolais calf cow pair for $400, another Angus cow with Angus/Charolais calf for $500. That a pair. Not each. I saw a herd of Corrientes going for $19 per 100 lbs. Average weight was 648 lbs I believe.. just crazy cheap cows.

Love your channel. I have an idea. I've never raised livestock so maybe its a foolish idea, but here we go. with a drought causing these issues, how about growing fodder in trays under controlled conditions to supplement your grass feeding. It wouldn't take anywhere near the amount of water that irrigating your fields would require. Still have your animals in the field fertilizing, breaking up the soil and mowing the grasses that are growing. I don't know the cost of the seeds in the quantities that you would need. But you could be selling the meat at retail prices in the future rather than getting what you do at the sale barn. It might be worth a small experiment. Either way i wish you the best. God bless!

Bless your heart for actually brain storming and trying to help.
They wouldn't be enough greens there to take care of how much those animals eat in trays. It was a thought though and that's better than no ideas! I tried to grow some German foxtail millet for my chickens and that experiment failed really bad. But that's okay I'll keep trying to figure something out too.

The inflation calculator doesn't represent the ag economy very well. It's probably accurate for the general economy, but it doesn't accurately factor in the huge increases of input costs (fuel, feed and fertilize) that apply to a livestock operation.

To be fair, the price of cattle HAS gone up. The reason is the same as why the price of gold has gone down: The US dollar has grown strong in comparison to other currencies.
For example, if I were to take your numbers and convert them to the swedish krona (becuase I'm a swede), the prices would be the following:
    (2020) 740,44 USD/head = 6570 SEK/head
    (2022) 700 USD/head = 7121 SEK/head
This is an increase of 8.4% measured in the swedish krona.

A rancher friend of mine last year (same region) was trying to get 0.75/lb live weight, and stated if he couldn’t get that he may have to quit ranching. He has 2000 acres and 175 head so it would have impacted this area quite a bit but luckily he didn’t go out of business.

I honestly think the market for selling bred heifers in the next two years is going to be where the good money is at. Once this mega drought subsideds (if it does) people will need to restock...... and they are gonna have to pay big big bucks to get ahold of good breeding stock.

We live in central Kansas. We have had a difficult time finding a local farmer that will raise grass fed, grass finished beef, including friends and a brother-in-law. Most prefer grain finished. We finally found one and purchased half a beef maybe two months ago. It was much cheaper per pound to buy this way. Farmers are smart to sell directly to consumer, since they can get more $$$$. Moderate drought here, but not as bad as other places. Forecast looks awful, with one 98 and the rest 100 plus on day day forecast.

Whoever buys old cows at the salebarn, where do you think they take those old cows? The Processor. If you can, cut out the middleman and take them to a processing plant yourself. I've maximized profits on old breeders by skipping the salebarn and taking them straight to a processing plant in Booker, TX. Over the years I've usually made close to double doing that. It can be a sad sight sometimes seeing all the downers thrown off in a pile to the side (and other things which will go unmentioned) at some of these processors. Don't film it, hold your nose and possibly double your profits on the old breeders. Good Luck.
