In America there are easy to attach gadgets you can attach to the shower head that are easy to use that stop the water without turning it off. Turning it off in my area means cold water wasting as it warms up again, the attachment prevents that.
U.S.A here, I collect the cold water when I am ready to take a shower or washing dishes also. I use the water to wash my patio, mop the floors, or water plants. I have not tried shutting off the shower while I soap up but I am willing to give it a try.
I buy dollar store cards or get free cards at CVS. But add a personal remark. Example, my son’s birthday card for his 19th birthday was “I’m so proud of the man you are.” He had gone through US Marine Corp boot camp, his secondary training (advanced weapons), and job training. He was proud of himself. My comment made his eyes glisten and he mouthed “thank you” with a smile. Let’s say his teenage years (13-18) were challenging, lol.
My dad who fixed appliances for a living told me to always use less detergent for washing & DW bc the amount on the detergent bottles are from the company that makes the soap & they want to sell soaps
Not only do you extend the life of your detergent by using small amounts, you also extend the life of your washer. I used to use the entire measure cup because I assumed that was how much I needed to get a load clean. My washer started acting up, and when the repair guy came out he asked how much detergent I was using. When I showed him, he said, "Cut it down to a tablespoon per load and you'll still get your clothes clean, plus your washer won't be struggling to deal with clearing all the excess detergent, the way it is now." Uh, whoops.
Also, if you have a septic tank, it will be happier. I also, years ago, started diluting laundry detergent to cut down how much in both the water and fabric due to family allergies and, sure, saving some money.
Vinegar in the wash cycle, baking soda in the rise cycle - my clothes are now soooooo much cleaner (2 cups distilled vinegar, 1 cup baking soda). DO not put both in the wash cycle as you will negate the cleaning power of the vinegar.
Same! I have a front loader speed queen and use a 1tablespoon measurement of detergent because the repair man told me as well - that’s all it takes. It’s cut down on our detergent use by leaps and bounds!!
my lovely neighbor and I were taking frugality and she told me if you wash every baggie once and reuse, you just got them for half off. I was already doing it, but now the whole family does :)
Not knocking anyone who does this but I pay $1.87 for 90 baggies and washing them all out and figuring out where and how to dry them, only to save 93.5 cents just doesn't feel worth it to me. We each have to pick what's worth it and important to us, though.
Stop buying paper towels and paper napkins. Buy cloth napkins, buy a different color for every person in the household and each person can use the same napkin all day long. Now you'll have a true full load when it's time to wash dish towels and napkins. Doing this will be a little bit of an adjustment but very well worth it.
I LOVE your videos! I became a widow & became caregiver for 2 family members. We had to move 9 times. My daughter has Epilepsy so traveling for tests. $$ So, we were 40K in debt. We contacted a debt company ( Greenpath) & they were so helpful! In 3 yrs it was paid in full. Also, my daughter worked/college & made too much on disability. Paid back $10K to IRS & 10K to her emploer. Today, we have a 2020 car we are paying for, we rent, & have bills for hearing aids/brothers bedroom furniture/1 credit card. We are now back to the " old" method of paying off smaller to larger. NO SPENDING! We do envelopes & have a budget. Yes, we hang our heavy clothes on a rack. Do the water trick. Nightlights after 8 PM. DON'T GIVE UP!!
I buy sturdy ziploc bags and I wash them. Just because I almost only keep frozen veg / frozen meat inside so i just flip it on the left side and wash it and that's it. There are some silicone freezer bags that are meant to be washed in the dishwasher and reused. :D

Yesterday my boss asked about my mandatory trainings, and I said “yes I’m done with them, just doing extra.” Her face was priceless!😊 Working our way to promotions may seem old fashioned, but I think there’s still something to be said for it if you don’t hate your job and plan to retire from it!

Me and my sister do number 1 when we go into physical stores too. Put it in the cart then put it back. We walk through the store twice to put it back but who doesn’t need extra steps for the day.
My husband use to laugh at me cause I would pick something up and add to cart but by end of shopping trip I done tossed several things out of the cart cause I was able to walk around and realize I really didnt need that right now!
Instead of paying $40 for a water saver shower head instead get a half cent washer take off shower head insert washer between shower head and hose. Its saves water and increases water pressure. Saves $40 plus tax.

Using less with recipes often works; when making cookies or sweet breads, like banana bread or pumpkin bread, I reduce the amount of sugar by 1/3 and sometimes even by 1/2. The cookies or breads actually taste better!

The biggest grocery money saver for us is Walmart pickup! I spend the entire week editing my weekly online shopping cart. Daily adding and subtracting items until the day of our order. I have a hard cap on our grocery budget (this includes non food items). This has saved us hundreds of dollars in unnecessary spending. We also signed up for the Walmart card which pays an unbelievable cash back benefit of 5%! We have never carried a balance on any credit card so no worries about paying interest. So essentially, we are paying 5% less for all Walmart purchases. This is only a 12 month offer so we'll see what they do in 12 months to retain customers.
I buy basic ingredients mostly. When you reduce prepared foods (strictly defined), shopping costs go down. Even in Aldi, I skip more than half the aisles. I also work with a weekly limit. If I exceed it, I either eliminate items in the cart or cut my weekly budget in the next weeks to keep at or under my monthly total. I do have a pantry, but it doesn’t look like a store.
❤aww Hillary i LOVE your channel and sweet personality! I agree with every single tip specially not being loyal to any company or products. The flexibility allows me to save a lot. I focused my attention to loss leaders and dont even look at the rest of the flyers and when I get to the store I hunt for those products and out the door to avoid tempting myself 😅 Being frugal requires discipline but fun and totally worthy.
I lived in Europe for over 15 years, and although I don’t know if this is truly a European thing or not, I still turn off the water while I wash. It could be because the majority of showers are smaller in Europe, and it’s simply practical so that the water doesn’t wash off the soap while you’re trying to wash.
Yup..from malta Europe here..we close the water whilst we soap ourselves....most don't have dishwasher and many of the older generation aka 60+ use a basin in their sink rather then running water on their plates.
I swear by foaming soap dispensers for hand and dish soap. Buy once and refill. 1/3 warm water, 1/3 soap, shake, 1/3 warm water, cap and shake again. Saves 2/3 of the soap. I make my own laundry soap so thats a no brainer saving. 2. Also I keep 2 lists on my phone. 1 is a to-do list and the other is a shopping list. I check my todo list every morning. I make a habit of making myself too busy (and often too dirty/sweaty) to go to town shopping. Idle hands... The stores are definitely my nemesis because I cannot stick to a list and town is so far that when I go, it takes up an entire day. 3. I learn a new skill every month. Often times it costs money. I run an ISO ad on craigslist for someone to show me how to do things. (Hands on learning.) For example: I spent $50 on Sunday having someone teach me how to castrate piglets. I can now raise my males for meat without boar taint. Another month, was sewing on a treadle, or soap making, processing small animals, another month with large animals.. A new skill every month is one I no longer have to pay others for.
Note*: I'm not inferring everyone should learn to castrate pigs. Some NORMAL skills to have to save money might include things like sewing, soap making, making your own medicines, foraging, container gardening, making homemade vinegars (it's a base ingredient in over a dozen of my household products that I do not buy), carpentry, mechanic work, grafting or propagation of fruit trees or plants, canning, etc.

I traded a processing kit (I bought really cheap at a flea market years ago) for someone to show me how to process chickens. I bought 2 full trailer loads of plant pots from a nursery that was going out of business for $40. I started out trading pots for plants. When I began running low, I traded pots for someone to show me how to graft my own fruit trees. Bartering here isn't just for the poor. Everyone of all walks does it.
Foaming soap dispensers are the best! Not only does it make the soap stretch but I find I can suds my hands up and rinse them quicker, so it saves water too. I add a teeny bit of food colour on the tip of a toothpick to make it look pretty. Gosh just learning to cook is a big benefit. Good on you for having a go at so many other things!! I've taught myself to make raised beds from free timber because hubby just didn't enjoy doing it and it's MY veggie patch. Figured out a really cheap, neat, easy way and I'm really proud of the results so far. Cheers from Oz!!
For number 2, you can also take a picture with your phone 📱 of your pantry, refrigerator etc to know what you have. No way am I going to sit down and make a list of everything I have, lol.
Loved your tip about walking the frozen foods aisle to get ideas for what I can make myself - I've caught myself doing exactly that lately, and since I'm a canner I check out those aisles as well! This week I made my own Sourdough English Muffins and Bagels, and started making oat milk creamer for my coffee again. I ran out of yellow mustard and made my own from a recipe on Pinterest - it's super easy!

But for the energy to get it warm. And we want to save it for the environment. We never ever warm up our car either. Thanks for your videos. They are fun and helpful. Ohhhh the end with the flowers was so sweet ❤ And I don't buy the zip lock bags anymore. We only have lock and lock containers in all sizes. I always have a snack bag ready to go and usually keep it in the car- except during hot months so things dont melt. I dont know that i could live with nuns- lol, kudos to you 😂. I got tired of writing out our budget every two weeks. I wrote down our basic budget and left empty lines to fill in for when other expenses pop up. I put that sheet of paper in a sheet protector so i can use a dry erase marker to make changes, etc. Then just wipe off as needed and reuse. Another great video! Watching this in May of '24 I was reminded of when I had a sink fixture set with two separate faucets. I realized back then that I automatically reached for the hot water faucet even to just briefly wash my hands. Propane for my boiler is expensive! I wrapped a dollar bill around the hot water faucet & fastened it with a rubber band to remind myself that unless I really NEEDED warm/hot water, that drawing it from the mechanical room 30+' away was wasting money.
I take one minute to read my grocery stores coupon policy. I found out my favorite grocery store takes the $10/$75 purchase from another store that is offered frequently. 🎉🎉🎉. Be sure to use your cellphone to take a picture of the policy as not all clerks know there store policy. I show them the store coupon policy and if they are still uncomfortable I tell them “I don’t mind waiting for a manager to approve it.” I also add, “I don’t want you to get in trouble.” Usually no problem, they know me.
Oooh, I love this! It's probably not a "habit," since you really only have to do it once (unless they update frequently, I guess), but that can be a very valuable 1 minute! Also, kindness towards retail employees is the secret sauce that works better than any coupon. 👍🏼
I don’t understand people (like my husband) who runs the water while brushing his teeth. Such a waste of water. Or running the shower for too long, waiting for it to warm up. I wish I can collect the water, it’s clean water going down the drain.
Hi Im from Slovakia i can confirm we close the water while 1. lathering the shower gel, 2.brushing teeth, 3.shavin, 4. lathering the soap when washing hands/face or even 5.lathering the dish soap when doin dishes :) good video :))
It makes SO much more sense!! From what I hear on social media and lived experiences, it seems pretty typical for (especially women) here in the states to take these 15, 20, or 30 minute long showers, with the water running the whole time. I don't want to see their water bills! 😂 (And thank you!)
@@Homegrown_HillaryI live in the countryside so we have a well and septic and people forget it still takes electricity to pump the water into the house. Around me well are deep, 350 ft or more, which requires 220 electricity. Plus wells are getting deeper and deeper as more and more water is used. My SIL & brother had a neighbor pumping well water into their home made pond 🤦♀️. It used so much water my bro and SIL could get water, they complained with no results. I suggested efficiency w/d to use less water and other water saving ideas. That solved there problem, thankfully.
I found your channel a few days ago. Wow, you're a fun ray of sunshine with good tips for viewers! We do close the tap when washing hands and brushing teeth. In public bathrooms I notice not everyone does close the tap when possible washing hands. That might have to do with not wanting to touch the tap two extra times. Our parents would turn the shower off but we use and egg timer or put on a 3-4 minute song on to limit water and energy use. I enjoyed watching your channel hanging three loads of laundry ;-). Because a kilowatt-hour costs 40 cents here. Besides, I don't understand how people get wrinkle free clothes from a dryer? ? I don't iron. Cause saves energy 😇😇 We hang most things on a hanger and hang them in our closets. From the three loads I'll iron just a few things.
I'm American. I changed my shower routine years ago to save utilities. Water on to rinse hair and body. Water off to lather hair. Water on to wet washcloth. Water off to lather soap on washcloth and wash body. Water on to rinse hair. Water off to condition hair. Water on to rinse hair and body. I have also used bar soap instead of body wash for years. I'll switch to bar soap for hand washing once my liquid hand soap runs out. I never let my kitchen sink just run to get hot water. I always collect the cold/warm water in some kind of container for other uses. Also, Americans shower and was their hair way too often. Daily showers are not necessary for most people. The needed frequency will vary by person, skin type, etc. When washing your hair, focus shampoo on the scalp only and conditioner on the hair length only.
I absolutely agree on showering too frequently. Years ago, as a new mom, I went to my first baby visit and confessed: I only bathe him completely once a week. My doctor was thrilled. He said that the number one thing he treats with infants is over bathing dry skin. He said do what I was doing, with spot cleaning dirty places with that big bath weekly, and I’ve carried that over largely to my adult life, as I naturally am prone to dry skin rashes with my lupus. I wash my hair very as needed,as I have the autoimmune alopecia which crops up occasionally. Bathing on a frequent schedule just because it seems like we should keeps the moisturizer industry in business. And absolutely, with my hair I agree the shampoo needs to hit the scalp area, with the conditioner on the length of my hair. Otherwise, one area gets really over cleaned and dry (and not moisturized) and my scalp has too much moisture again.

Great tips Hillary ,The Tip about packing snacks I live by and it’s very useful I do it all the time ,I always carry a purse big enough to carry snacks in it. Snacks at the convenient store are crazy expensive like you said also I am the type of person that eats at least 3 snacks throughout the day and don’t wanna wait till I get home to enjoy.
I've always turned the shower water off while soaping down. Turn it back on for rinse. Our water is billed at a flat rate. No meter. We still utilize our well water too. Still shut the water off while not using. 👍
@@Homegrown_Hillary Right now our water bill is $31.00 a month no matter how much water is used. This doesn't include sewer in which we've got our own septic tank . Other additional fees pertain to in town customers. Trash and road maintenance. I maintain the 1/2 mile of road back to our house and cover the cost of a large 4 yard dumpster. It all is the same in the long run. Nothing is actually free ...

The tips are great! Thanks for sharing! Your final tip had me remembering how I repaired my notebook with duct tape. I use a small notebook to track my appointments, since I only have a few each month. Anyway, I keep this book in a small purse and have had it for years. There's a lot of room left to write (because I only need a page per month) so when the spine started ripping to shreds, I was lucky to have some strong duct tape that matched, and voila! My book can last me several more years. (Seriously, 12 pages a year, even in a small book, means it'll last much longer than a planner. The cover is some unknown fabric, but hey, the duct tape stuck and protects the spine. Plus it's purple duct tape on a blue notebook, so that's kinda pretty.
We call it a Navy shower here in the US😂..my Dad was in the Navy and on the ship, you shower...turn on water, turn off and soap up then turn on water and rinse.
I stopped buying ziplock bags, I instead use my mason jars (I am a canner and have a large stock of jars that I find at yardsales for pennies) to store my leftovers in even dry goods. I even marinade meats in them. I place everything in them. I save the lids/tops when I open a jar and wash them and use them on the items that I am not canning. I even save lots of my plastic lids off items like mayonaise jars and such and use those instead of the uswd lids and rings. I even save my glass jars that I got from grocery store that held items like pickles, jam, salsas or such..just wash and use to store in. After i started this I even got rid of all my plastic storage bowls too. I use glass or metal for everything. Family likes getting gifts for me for christmas and I just ask for things like pyrex bowls with lids, glass canisters, mason/canning jars, glass tea pitcher, Cloth napkins, kitchen towels or rags, tomato cages for my garden, a berry tree/bush, i even love the old metal ice trays from back in the day. Now my family has gotten use to things i prefer and they catch things at their lowest sale sometime through the year and that is my gift come Christmas time. Things that you dont have to constantly replace/buy, that last forever, and less possible chemicals being leached into our foods.

Love all these miney saving tips..a few new skill I learned was making scrubbies from the scrubbie yarn that I got at 50% off. I bought a package of the Scotch Brite scrubby/sponges 3-years ago now..Im on the last 3-scrubbies and have been watching YT videos recently so I made just a few to see if they are just as good as the store bought and I would say it’s a winner..so no more buying scrubbies…next skill was a few days ago and that was crocheting thick potholders..I have lots of yarn because I use to crochet blankets, then moved onto crocheting my wash clothes, personal clothes and dish clothes..next skill and I’m so excited over this is….making soap with lye, have had the supplies for many years and the reason why I want to learn this skill is because then I can make my dish soap, hand soap, body wash although I do make my whipped body wash I didn’t actually make the soap base I purchased the already made soap base. I want to make a different recipe for my laundry detergent that contains a similar safe product to oxy clean. I spent some money yesterday on potato onions and walking onions that are perennials so once planted and established will never have to buy them again..they were very expensive in my opinion but once established I can turn around and sell my own. I believe that everyone needs to look into gardening to help us with another huge inflation jump that will be coming that people are talking about..I’m a prepared person as it’s my lifestyle by living this way you will save yourself money and live better.
@@Homegrown_Hillary ~Lol..I wish as mine in the past never really produced a abundance but it’s my own fault as it got really weedy and unmanageable to pull weeds verses pulling the walking onions..I’m going to make a separate area for them to make it more manageable..background story as to why I had to rebuy them is because my husband up rooted my existing bed and redid my garden area without telling me first. Would love for you to talk more about anything related to gardening..do you grow the potato onions? Do you grow Jerusalem artichokes? Have you ever used the Winter Sowing method? I have been able to grow many strawberry and asparagus seedlings using this method.
I remember reading about a woman with a cast iron tub who had her sons dig a hole for the tub and place so the edge was just above the ground and planted a spreading by roots plant in it to contain it. Exercise for her sons 😂 and containment for her plant🎉 (it was a perennial you eat that takes over but not an onion).
Awesome skills to have! Have you thought about growing luffas? Theyre super easy and drought tolerant. I only plant every couple years because they produce so much. Theyre a zucchini that you let dry on the vine. I use PVC pipes and put my luffas in and fill with homemade soap, freeze, and take them out and slice them. Exfoliating body soap. I cut slices of luffa off instead of a kitchen scrubber. Theyre abrasive and perfect for scrubbing cast iron. They can hold dish soap for regular dishes too.

I live in Bosnia and, yes, we normaly spare water. I take short showers - water, shampoo, rinse, dry. Also, we often have water pumps in our gardens to water veggies, that water is not to drink, but is good for the soil and is free.
My current Amazon cart is over 1000$ of just random small stuff I really wanted at the time. Now that it's full of junk it's a huge hassle to actually go through and I end up buying nothing
We have a well so we always turn the water off while soaping off. It does save water and heating costs for the water. Also the coupon thing is true if the store has abaondoned cart set up. If you put in your email and don't check out you'll get a coupon. I know this because I have a bookstore. :)
I always forget to factor in the time to heat up the car before work especially back when I was in New Brunswick in winter, ended up shivering on a lot of drives to work lol four years of the good and bad habit and no issues when got inspected, just a lot of almost being late to things 😂
I don't have mental issues like that, thank god. I'm quite careful with my money since 16. Even earlier I use to see how dad use to calculate everything. I guess he helped me have a budget and a balance in life. I'm not one to do impulsive purchases.
open faced sandwiches, mow grass less often, split the dessert with someone, reuse old spectacle frames when you need a new prescription, water down juice or soda, pay cash and put change in mad money jar, top off gas tank weekly, mend holes in the toes of socks- it doesn't have to look good, there are only two of us so I buy hamburger patties in packages of 10 & rebag & freeze in bags of 2, also buy a rotisserie chicken : wings and thighs together, separate breast meat, freeze the carcass & bones to cook up bone broth for soup later. You don't need to wash clothes after every wearing - air them out & spot clean - hang in the closet with hangar facing opposite direction so you know you wore that, cool water from cooking vegetables - can add to soup, water plants with - even pets (extra vitamins). Do all your errands at the same time (or group them by parts of town)- all the doctor & dentist appointments on one day. Turn thermostat down in winter & wear a sweater or vest - likewise in summer turn thermostat up (a degree or two will save money), go longer between haircuts,
If the prescription is the same, I would keep old pair for spare and then after that reuse the frame, but excellent idea. Lots of great ideas. Sometimes I would air out the clothes, hang in bathroom overnight or even outside for a while. My hair is curly so even if I cut it and it’s not perfect no one knows 😂.
Laundry detergent - wash clothes once (total wash/rinse), then wash a second time adding no detergent - check the wash cycle to see how much detergent is left over from the first washing.
Tape on two big garbage bags across the windshield. A little tape on each side & a small strip in the middle. This will hold it down & then just pull off & reuse. Good Luck!😋
I am one of those persons that I can take a shopping cart an get as much things in an leave it. Or if I know when there a sale on clothing for the kids I try an do it online that way my 6 year old doesn't tell me mom I want this toy. I've been doing Walmart app to do my grocery shopping it has saves us on ton.

In America there are easy to attach gadgets you can attach to the shower head that are easy to use that stop the water without turning it off. Turning it off in my area means cold water wasting as it warms up again, the attachment prevents that.
U.S.A here, I collect the cold water when I am ready to take a shower or washing dishes also. I use the water to wash my patio, mop the floors, or water plants. I have not tried shutting off the shower while I soap up but I am willing to give it a try.

I buy dollar store cards or get free cards at CVS. But add a personal remark. Example, my son’s birthday card for his 19th birthday was “I’m so proud of the man you are.” He had gone through US Marine Corp boot camp, his secondary training (advanced weapons), and job training. He was proud of himself. My comment made his eyes glisten and he mouthed “thank you” with a smile. Let’s say his teenage years (13-18) were challenging, lol.

My dad who fixed appliances for a living told me to always use less detergent for washing & DW bc the amount on the detergent bottles are from the company that makes the soap & they want to sell soaps
Not only do you extend the life of your detergent by using small amounts, you also extend the life of your washer. I used to use the entire measure cup because I assumed that was how much I needed to get a load clean. My washer started acting up, and when the repair guy came out he asked how much detergent I was using. When I showed him, he said, "Cut it down to a tablespoon per load and you'll still get your clothes clean, plus your washer won't be struggling to deal with clearing all the excess detergent, the way it is now." Uh, whoops.

Also, if you have a septic tank, it will be happier. I also, years ago, started diluting laundry detergent to cut down how much in both the water and fabric due to family allergies and, sure, saving some money.
Vinegar in the wash cycle, baking soda in the rise cycle - my clothes are now soooooo much cleaner (2 cups distilled vinegar, 1 cup baking soda). DO not put both in the wash cycle as you will negate the cleaning power of the vinegar.
Same! I have a front loader speed queen and use a 1tablespoon measurement of detergent because the repair man told me as well - that’s all it takes. It’s cut down on our detergent use by leaps and bounds!!

Not knocking anyone who does this but I pay $1.87 for 90 baggies and washing them all out and figuring out where and how to dry them, only to save 93.5 cents just doesn't feel worth it to me. We each have to pick what's worth it and important to us, though.

Stop buying paper towels and paper napkins. Buy cloth napkins, buy a different color for every person in the household and each person can use the same napkin all day long. Now you'll have a true full load when it's time to wash dish towels and napkins. Doing this will be a little bit of an adjustment but very well worth it.

I LOVE your videos! I became a widow & became caregiver for 2 family members. We had to move 9 times. My daughter has Epilepsy so traveling for tests. $$ So, we were 40K in debt. We contacted a debt company ( Greenpath) & they were so helpful! In 3 yrs it was paid in full. Also, my daughter worked/college & made too much on disability. Paid back $10K to IRS & 10K to her emploer. Today, we have a 2020 car we are paying for, we rent, & have bills for hearing aids/brothers bedroom furniture/1 credit card. We are now back to the " old" method of paying off smaller to larger. NO SPENDING! We do envelopes & have a budget. Yes, we hang our heavy clothes on a rack. Do the water trick. Nightlights after 8 PM. DON'T GIVE UP!!
I buy sturdy ziploc bags and I wash them. Just because I almost only keep frozen veg / frozen meat inside so i just flip it on the left side and wash it and that's it. There are some silicone freezer bags that are meant to be washed in the dishwasher and reused. :D

Me and my sister do number 1 when we go into physical stores too. Put it in the cart then put it back. We walk through the store twice to put it back but who doesn’t need extra steps for the day.
My husband use to laugh at me cause I would pick something up and add to cart but by end of shopping trip I done tossed several things out of the cart cause I was able to walk around and realize I really didnt need that right now!

Using less with recipes often works; when making cookies or sweet breads, like banana bread or pumpkin bread, I reduce the amount of sugar by 1/3 and sometimes even by 1/2. The cookies or breads actually taste better!

The biggest grocery money saver for us is Walmart pickup! I spend the entire week editing my weekly online shopping cart. Daily adding and subtracting items until the day of our order. I have a hard cap on our grocery budget (this includes non food items). This has saved us hundreds of dollars in unnecessary spending. We also signed up for the Walmart card which pays an unbelievable cash back benefit of 5%! We have never carried a balance on any credit card so no worries about paying interest. So essentially, we are paying 5% less for all Walmart purchases. This is only a 12 month offer so we'll see what they do in 12 months to retain customers.
I buy basic ingredients mostly. When you reduce prepared foods (strictly defined), shopping costs go down. Even in Aldi, I skip more than half the aisles. I also work with a weekly limit. If I exceed it, I either eliminate items in the cart or cut my weekly budget in the next weeks to keep at or under my monthly total. I do have a pantry, but it doesn’t look like a store.

I focused my attention to loss leaders and dont even look at the rest of the flyers and when I get to the store I hunt for those products and out the door to avoid tempting myself 😅 Being frugal requires discipline but fun and totally worthy.

I lived in Europe for over 15 years, and although I don’t know if this is truly a European thing or not, I still turn off the water while I wash. It could be because the majority of showers are smaller in Europe, and it’s simply practical so that the water doesn’t wash off the soap while you’re trying to wash.
Yup..from malta Europe here..we close the water whilst we soap ourselves....most don't have dishwasher and many of the older generation aka 60+ use a basin in their sink rather then running water on their plates.
I swear by foaming soap dispensers for hand and dish soap. Buy once and refill. 1/3 warm water, 1/3 soap, shake, 1/3 warm water, cap and shake again. Saves 2/3 of the soap. I make my own laundry soap so thats a no brainer saving.
2. Also I keep 2 lists on my phone. 1 is a to-do list and the other is a shopping list. I check my todo list every morning. I make a habit of making myself too busy (and often too dirty/sweaty) to go to town shopping. Idle hands... The stores are definitely my nemesis because I cannot stick to a list and town is so far that when I go, it takes up an entire day.
3. I learn a new skill every month. Often times it costs money. I run an ISO ad on craigslist for someone to show me how to do things. (Hands on learning.) For example: I spent $50 on Sunday having someone teach me how to castrate piglets. I can now raise my males for meat without boar taint. Another month, was sewing on a treadle, or soap making, processing small animals, another month with large animals.. A new skill every month is one I no longer have to pay others for.
Note*: I'm not inferring everyone should learn to castrate pigs. Some NORMAL skills to have to save money might include things like sewing, soap making, making your own medicines, foraging, container gardening, making homemade vinegars (it's a base ingredient in over a dozen of my household products that I do not buy), carpentry, mechanic work, grafting or propagation of fruit trees or plants, canning, etc.
That's such a cool idea- paying someone to teach you something regularly. Do you ever get people willing to teach through bartering or trading?

I traded a processing kit (I bought really cheap at a flea market years ago) for someone to show me how to process chickens. I bought 2 full trailer loads of plant pots from a nursery that was going out of business for $40. I started out trading pots for plants. When I began running low, I traded pots for someone to show me how to graft my own fruit trees. Bartering here isn't just for the poor. Everyone of all walks does it.
Foaming soap dispensers are the best! Not only does it make the soap stretch but I find I can suds my hands up and rinse them quicker, so it saves water too. I add a teeny bit of food colour on the tip of a toothpick to make it look pretty. Gosh just learning to cook is a big benefit. Good on you for having a go at so many other things!! I've taught myself to make raised beds from free timber because hubby just didn't enjoy doing it and it's MY veggie patch. Figured out a really cheap, neat, easy way and I'm really proud of the results so far. Cheers from Oz!!
For number 2, you can also take a picture with your phone 📱 of your pantry, refrigerator etc to know what you have. No way am I going to sit down and make a list of everything I have, lol.
Loved your tip about walking the frozen foods aisle to get ideas for what I can make myself - I've caught myself doing exactly that lately, and since I'm a canner I check out those aisles as well! This week I made my own Sourdough English Muffins and Bagels, and started making oat milk creamer for my coffee again. I ran out of yellow mustard and made my own from a recipe on Pinterest - it's super easy!

But for the energy to get it warm. And we want to save it for the environment. We never ever warm up our car either. Thanks for your videos. They are fun and helpful. I always have a snack bag ready to go and usually keep it in the car- except during hot months so things dont melt. I dont know that i could live with nuns- lol, kudos to you 😂. I got tired of writing out our budget every two weeks. I wrote down our basic budget and left empty lines to fill in for when other expenses pop up. I put that sheet of paper in a sheet protector so i can use a dry erase marker to make changes, etc. Then just wipe off as needed and reuse. Another great video! Watching this in May of '24 I was reminded of when I had a sink fixture set with two separate faucets. I realized back then that I automatically reached for the hot water faucet even to just briefly wash my hands. Propane for my boiler is expensive! I wrapped a dollar bill around the hot water faucet & fastened it with a rubber band to remind myself that unless I really NEEDED warm/hot water, that drawing it from the mechanical room 30+' away was wasting money.
I take one minute to read my grocery stores coupon policy. I found out my favorite grocery store takes the $10/$75 purchase from another store that is offered frequently. 🎉🎉🎉. Be sure to use your cellphone to take a picture of the policy as not all clerks know there store policy. I show them the store coupon policy and if they are still uncomfortable I tell them “I don’t mind waiting for a manager to approve it.” I also add, “I don’t want you to get in trouble.” Usually no problem, they know me.
Oooh, I love this! It's probably not a "habit," since you really only have to do it once (unless they update frequently, I guess), but that can be a very valuable 1 minute!

Hi Im from Slovakia i can confirm we close the water while 1. lathering the shower gel, 2.brushing teeth, 3.shavin, 4. lathering the soap when washing hands/face or even 5.lathering the dish soap when doin dishes :) good video :))
It makes SO much more sense!! From what I hear on social media and lived experiences, it seems pretty typical for (especially women) here in the states to take these 15, 20, or 30 minute long showers, with the water running the whole time. I don't want to see their water bills! 😂 (And thank you!)
@@Homegrown_HillaryI live in the countryside so we have a well and septic and people forget it still takes electricity to pump the water into the house. Around me well are deep, 350 ft or more, which requires 220 electricity. Plus wells are getting deeper and deeper as more and more water is used. My SIL & brother had a neighbor pumping well water into their home made pond 🤦♀️. It used so much water my bro and SIL could get water, they complained with no results. I suggested efficiency w/d to use less water and other water saving ideas. That solved there problem, thankfully.

We do close the tap when washing hands and brushing teeth. In public bathrooms I notice not everyone does close the tap when possible washing hands. That might have to do with not wanting to touch the tap two extra times.
Our parents would turn the shower off but we use and egg timer or put on a 3-4 minute song on to limit water and energy use.
I enjoyed watching your channel hanging three loads of laundry ;-). Because a kilowatt-hour costs 40 cents here.

I don't iron. Cause saves energy 😇😇 We hang most things on a hanger and hang them in our closets.

I'm American. I changed my shower routine years ago to save utilities. Water on to rinse hair and body. Water off to lather hair. Water on to wet washcloth. Water off to lather soap on washcloth and wash body. Water on to rinse hair. Water off to condition hair. Water on to rinse hair and body. I have also used bar soap instead of body wash for years. I'll switch to bar soap for hand washing once my liquid hand soap runs out. I never let my kitchen sink just run to get hot water. I always collect the cold/warm water in some kind of container for other uses. Also, Americans shower and was their hair way too often. Daily showers are not necessary for most people. The needed frequency will vary by person, skin type, etc. When washing your hair, focus shampoo on the scalp only and conditioner on the hair length only.
I absolutely agree on showering too frequently. Years ago, as a new mom, I went to my first baby visit and confessed: I only bathe him completely once a week. My doctor was thrilled. He said that the number one thing he treats with infants is over bathing dry skin. He said do what I was doing, with spot cleaning dirty places with that big bath weekly, and I’ve carried that over largely to my adult life, as I naturally am prone to dry skin rashes with my lupus. I wash my hair very as needed,as I have the autoimmune alopecia which crops up occasionally. Bathing on a frequent schedule just because it seems like we should keeps the moisturizer industry in business. And absolutely, with my hair I agree the shampoo needs to hit the scalp area, with the conditioner on the length of my hair. Otherwise, one area gets really over cleaned and dry (and not moisturized) and my scalp has too much moisture again.

I use dish soap and double it with water to wash clothes... just make sure you mix it gently before you use.. saves about 4.00 a month.. or more
Great tips Hillary ,The Tip about packing snacks I live by and it’s very useful I do it all the time ,I always carry a purse big enough to carry snacks in it. Snacks at the convenient store are crazy expensive like you said also I am the type of person that eats at least 3 snacks throughout the day and don’t wanna wait till I get home to enjoy.
I've always turned the shower water off while soaping down. Turn it back on for rinse.
Our water is billed at a flat rate. No meter. We still utilize our well water too. Still shut the water off while not using. 👍

Right now our water bill is $31.00 a month no matter how much water is used. This doesn't include sewer in which we've got our own septic tank .
Other additional fees pertain to in town customers. Trash and road maintenance.
I maintain the 1/2 mile of road back to our house and cover the cost of a large 4 yard dumpster.
It all is the same in the long run. Nothing is actually free ...

The tips are great! Thanks for sharing! Your final tip had me remembering how I repaired my notebook with duct tape. I use a small notebook to track my appointments, since I only have a few each month. Anyway, I keep this book in a small purse and have had it for years. There's a lot of room left to write (because I only need a page per month) so when the spine started ripping to shreds, I was lucky to have some strong duct tape that matched, and voila! My book can last me several more years. (Seriously, 12 pages a year, even in a small book, means it'll last much longer than a planner. The cover is some unknown fabric, but hey, the duct tape stuck and protects the spine. Plus it's purple duct tape on a blue notebook, so that's kinda pretty.

We call it a Navy shower here in the US😂..my Dad was in the Navy and on the ship, you shower...turn on water, turn off and soap up then turn on water and rinse.

I stopped buying ziplock bags, I instead use my mason jars (I am a canner and have a large stock of jars that I find at yardsales for pennies) to store my leftovers in even dry goods. I even marinade meats in them. I place everything in them. I save the lids/tops when I open a jar and wash them and use them on the items that I am not canning. I even save lots of my plastic lids off items like mayonaise jars and such and use those instead of the uswd lids and rings. I even save my glass jars that I got from grocery store that held items like pickles, jam, salsas or such..just wash and use to store in. After i started this I even got rid of all my plastic storage bowls too. I use glass or metal for everything. Family likes getting gifts for me for christmas and I just ask for things like pyrex bowls with lids, glass canisters, mason/canning jars, glass tea pitcher, Cloth napkins, kitchen towels or rags, tomato cages for my garden, a berry tree/bush, i even love the old metal ice trays from back in the day. Now my family has gotten use to things i prefer and they catch things at their lowest sale sometime through the year and that is my gift come Christmas time.
Things that you dont have to constantly replace/buy, that last forever, and less possible chemicals being leached into our foods.

Love all these miney saving tips..a few new skill I learned was making scrubbies from the scrubbie yarn that I got at 50% off. I bought a package of the Scotch Brite scrubby/sponges 3-years ago now..Im on the last 3-scrubbies and have been watching YT videos recently so I made just a few to see if they are just as good as the store bought and I would say it’s a winner..so no more buying scrubbies…next skill was a few days ago and that was crocheting thick potholders..I have lots of yarn because I use to crochet blankets, then moved onto crocheting my wash clothes, personal clothes and dish clothes..next skill and I’m so excited over this is….making soap with lye, have had the supplies for many years and the reason why I want to learn this skill is because then I can make my dish soap, hand soap, body wash although I do make my whipped body wash I didn’t actually make the soap base I purchased the already made soap base. I want to make a different recipe for my laundry detergent that contains a similar safe product to oxy clean. I spent some money yesterday on potato onions and walking onions that are perennials so once planted and established will never have to buy them again..they were very expensive in my opinion but once established I can turn around and sell my own. I believe that everyone needs to look into gardening to help us with another huge inflation jump that will be coming that people are talking about..I’m a prepared person as it’s my lifestyle by living this way you will save yourself money and live better.

@@Homegrown_Hillary ~Lol..I wish as mine in the past never really produced a abundance but it’s my own fault as it got really weedy and unmanageable to pull weeds verses pulling the walking onions..I’m going to make a separate area for them to make it more manageable..background story as to why I had to rebuy them is because my husband up rooted my existing bed and redid my garden area without telling me first. Would love for you to talk more about anything related to gardening..do you grow the potato onions? Do you grow Jerusalem artichokes? Have you ever used the Winter Sowing method? I have been able to grow many strawberry and asparagus seedlings using this method.
I remember reading about a woman with a cast iron tub who had her sons dig a hole for the tub and place so the edge was just above the ground and planted a spreading by roots plant in it to contain it. Exercise for her sons 😂 and containment for her plant🎉 (it was a perennial you eat that takes over but not an onion).

Awesome skills to have! Have you thought about growing luffas? Theyre super easy and drought tolerant. I only plant every couple years because they produce so much. Theyre a zucchini that you let dry on the vine. I use PVC pipes and put my luffas in and fill with homemade soap, freeze, and take them out and slice them. Exfoliating body soap. I live in Bosnia and, yes, we normaly spare water. I take short showers - water, shampoo, rinse, dry. Also, we often have water pumps in our gardens to water veggies, that water is not to drink, but is good for the soil and is free.

We have a well so we always turn the water off while soaping off. It does save water and heating costs for the water. Also the coupon thing is true if the store has abaondoned cart set up. If you put in your email and don't check out you'll get a coupon. I know this because I have a bookstore. :)

open faced sandwiches, mow grass less often, split the dessert with someone, reuse old spectacle frames when you need a new prescription, water down juice or soda, pay cash and put change in mad money jar, top off gas tank weekly, mend holes in the toes of socks- it doesn't have to look good, there are only two of us so I buy hamburger patties in packages of 10 & rebag & freeze in bags of 2, also buy a rotisserie chicken : wings and thighs together, separate breast meat, freeze the carcass & bones to cook up bone broth for soup later. You don't need to wash clothes after every wearing - air them out & spot clean - hang in the closet with hangar facing opposite direction so you know you wore that, cool water from cooking vegetables - can add to soup, water plants with - even pets (extra vitamins). Do all your errands at the same time (or group them by parts of town)- all the doctor & dentist appointments on one day. Turn thermostat down in winter & wear a sweater or vest - likewise in summer turn thermostat up (a degree or two will save money), go longer between haircuts,

Lots of great ideas. Sometimes I would air out the clothes, hang in bathroom overnight or even outside for a while. My hair is curly so even if I cut it and it’s not perfect no one knows 😂.

Laundry detergent - wash clothes once (total wash/rinse), then wash a second time adding no detergent - check the wash cycle to see how much detergent is left over from the first washing.

I am one of those persons that I can take a shopping cart an get as much things in an leave it. Or if I know when there a sale on clothing for the kids I try an do it online that way my 6 year old doesn't tell me mom I want this toy. I've been doing Walmart app to do my grocery shopping it has saves us on ton.
