Global National: June 23, 2024 | Tens of millions facing dangerous heat, humidity in US

  • In tonight's top story: More than 100 million Americans across 27 states are still dealing with the heat and humidity that began last week. This, as severe storms and flooding have prompted evacuations and a disaster proclamation in Iowa. Meanwhile, at least one tornado ripped through Wisconsin on Saturday night, leaving a path of destruction and power outages. Heather Yourex-West has the latest.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the choice facing voters in a Toronto federal byelection will "mirror" the one they will face in the next federal election. Toronto-St. Paul’s has long been considered a Liberal stronghold, but the vote scheduled for next Monday is shaping up to be more competitive, and as national-level polling suggests, voters across the country are eager for change. Mackenzie Gray reports.
Warning: This story contains disturbing images; discretion is advised. In the Middle East, violence and uncertainty continues to hang over the crisis in Gaza, as peace talk efforts between Israel and Hamas stall. On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike hit a United Nations building in northern Gaza, killing several people, according to witnesses. In the occupied West Bank, Israel Defense Forces are investigating a troubling incident caught on camera, involving a wounded Palestinian man strapped to the hood of an armoured vehicle, moving throughout the streets of Jenin. Redmon Shannon has more.
If you've been to the grocery store looking for olive oil lately, you'll know how expensive it has gotten. Olives are highly susceptible to extreme weather - and excess heat can severely impact olive production in countries like Italy, Spain and Greece. But it's not just olives. In fact, so much of the produce we depend on is highly vulnerable to severe weather, and as Kyle Benning reports, the farmers who bring us our food aren't immune either.
Plus, the thought of a Game 7 in this year's Stanley Cup final seemed nearly impossible after the Edmonton Oilers lost the first three games of the series. Now, they're one win away from bringing the cup back to Canada for the first time in 31 years. With so much at stake, it could be one of the greatest games in hockey history. As Jeff Semple reports, few are feeling the hype as much as former long-time voice of the Oilers, Rod Phillips.

There’s a difference between climate and weather: Weather fluctuates day in, day out, whereas climate refers to long term trends-and the overall trend is clearly and indisputably a warming one.
Climate change is about extreme weather events happening more often than usual. It's not necessary to believe everything that climate change activists say because they tend to exaggerate in the same way that climate change deniers do. That doesn't mean that we should not make an effort to look after the planet in reasonable ways. There is plenty of middle ground between climate apocalypse and climate change.

The last 10 yrs were the hottest on record. As ice core & tree ring data shows - last year was the hottest year in over 120,000 yrs. Whistle blowing Exxon Mobile scientists testified under oath in 2019 US Congressional hearings that the fossil fuel industry knew over 40 yrs ago that fossil fuel CO2 emissions we're altering the climate. An internal company memo from 1982 confirms this and notes that its scientists predicted that human-caused global warming would first be detectable in the year 2000, plus or minus five years. That was an accurate 42 year old prediction!
ExxonMobil scientists also predicted in the 1970's that climate change would cause global warming of 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade, which is the same as academic and governmental predictions that came out between 1970 and 2007. Do the math 0.2 C x 7 (decades) = 1.4 C of warming which is exactly what has occured. That was an incredibly accurate prediction!

The properties lost to floods and fires have to be rebuilt. Some insurance companies in the United States are not renewing homeowner policies in riskier areas. Since we're going to pay a price, wouldn't it make more sense to spend that money on mitigating climate change instead? Even if you don't directly suffer from the storms, you will notice the increase in food prices.

@@darlene2709 I agree with you, but they've made two assertions without facts. 1) Climate change is something we can actually do something about (this requires agreement on what's causing it, which there is no actual scientific consensus). And 2), they continue to propose solutions that make themselves richer but will DEFINITELY not fix the problem.
When someone tells you a doomsday scenario involving rising ocean levels and flooding when I can see them buying beach front property, let's just say I get a little skeptical.

Poilievre Conservatives couldn't care less - they are fighting for the enemy. One of the worst things to ever happen to Canada was when Conservatives turned against the environment. "Climate change is the most serious environmental challenge and time is running out." - Brian Mulroney, last Progressive Conservative elected by Canadians. "Abandon concerns about urban sprawl, we need to house the poor."
    Nope.
    No sale.
Not when these homes without yards and "condo" sound wall buildings are what passes for combating urban sprawl.
ie: We got 60 acres, okay, let's build 40 acres of mansions for wealthy home buyers from outside of the city, their remote job can support it now, then we'll build sound barriers for them and call them condos. Yeah, they'll buy that.

Oh, Canadians, so silly... 40 degrees isn't hot at all. Come in Phoenix, Az, where it is well over 110 degrees... I would kill for a cool 40 degrees right now.

Earth is round. You're literally closer to the sun in Arizona. Keep up.

Its the water here. Arizona is famoulsly arid. Moisture in the air makes the temp of the air transfer into your body more efficiently and limits the cooling potential of your sweat.

Imagine the impact made by russias stupid war. Would be easier to send a seal team to Moscow than deal with pollution
