Global National: June 23, 2024 | Tens of millions facing dangerous heat, humidity in US

- Опубліковано 22 гру 2024
- In tonight's top story: More than 100 million Americans across 27 states are still dealing with the heat and humidity that began last week. This, as severe storms and flooding have prompted evacuations and a disaster proclamation in Iowa. Meanwhile, at least one tornado ripped through Wisconsin on Saturday night, leaving a path of destruction and power outages. Heather Yourex-West has the latest.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the choice facing voters in a Toronto federal byelection will "mirror" the one they will face in the next federal election. Toronto-St. Paul’s has long been considered a Liberal stronghold, but the vote scheduled for next Monday is shaping up to be more competitive, and as national-level polling suggests, voters across the country are eager for change. Mackenzie Gray reports.
Warning: This story contains disturbing images; discretion is advised. In the Middle East, violence and uncertainty continues to hang over the crisis in Gaza, as peace talk efforts between Israel and Hamas stall. On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike hit a United Nations building in northern Gaza, killing several people, according to witnesses. In the occupied West Bank, Israel Defense Forces are investigating a troubling incident caught on camera, involving a wounded Palestinian man strapped to the hood of an armoured vehicle, moving throughout the streets of Jenin. Redmon Shannon has more.
If you've been to the grocery store looking for olive oil lately, you'll know how expensive it has gotten. Olives are highly susceptible to extreme weather - and excess heat can severely impact olive production in countries like Italy, Spain and Greece. But it's not just olives. In fact, so much of the produce we depend on is highly vulnerable to severe weather, and as Kyle Benning reports, the farmers who bring us our food aren't immune either.
Plus, the thought of a Game 7 in this year's Stanley Cup final seemed nearly impossible after the Edmonton Oilers lost the first three games of the series. Now, they're one win away from bringing the cup back to Canada for the first time in 31 years. With so much at stake, it could be one of the greatest games in hockey history. As Jeff Semple reports, few are feeling the hype as much as former long-time voice of the Oilers, Rod Phillips.

those started the fire, who started the flood?
I JUST FEEL SORRY FOR WILDLIFE
I don't miss the oppressive heat in Ontario. I love Alberta's dry and cooler summers.
there is no hate in your statement so I have no way to respond....
I guess that's why Edmonton is called Deadmonton, because it's such a wonderful place to live right?
So the climate tax doesnt stop the weather .😂😂😂
Lmao ppl act like it’s not summer and it’s never been this hot at the end of June 😂😂
There’s a difference between climate and weather: Weather fluctuates day in, day out, whereas climate refers to long term trends-and the overall trend is clearly and indisputably a warming one.
Climate change is about extreme weather events happening more often than usual. It's not necessary to believe everything that climate change activists say because they tend to exaggerate in the same way that climate change deniers do. That doesn't mean that we should not make an effort to look after the planet in reasonable ways. There is plenty of middle ground between climate apocalypse and climate change.
It hasn't in these areas. That's the point of the story. Try to keep up.
North Dakota recorded temperatures of 121 degrees in the 1930’s, South Dakota 120 degrees. Wisconsin 114 degrees. Temperatures unheard of today.
For me it starts to get hot in May. No AC so move to basement as it is 20F cooler. the lack of rain for weeks in unusual
@@darlene2709Ever hear of geo engineering? There is such a thing. You can find it easily on NOAA site. 😉
Oh my gosh goodness! I have never been really hot , ever. What will I do?

It's called Summer! It's been happening for Centuries. Wait till Winter comes and you get your Carbon Tax Added on your Heating Bills!
Then maybe you should wear a sweater instead of complaining about the carbon tax. It's what's been used for centuries before we even had natural gas/electric heating in the house.
The last 10 yrs were the hottest on record. As ice core & tree ring data shows - last year was the hottest year in over 120,000 yrs. Whistle blowing Exxon Mobile scientists testified under oath in 2019 US Congressional hearings that the fossil fuel industry knew over 40 yrs ago that fossil fuel CO2 emissions we're altering the climate. An internal company memo from 1982 confirms this and notes that its scientists predicted that human-caused global warming would first be detectable in the year 2000, plus or minus five years. That was an accurate 42 year old prediction!
ExxonMobil scientists also predicted in the 1970's that climate change would cause global warming of 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade, which is the same as academic and governmental predictions that came out between 1970 and 2007. Do the math 0.2 C x 7 (decades) = 1.4 C of warming which is exactly what has occured. That was an incredibly accurate prediction!

The properties lost to floods and fires have to be rebuilt. Some insurance companies in the United States are not renewing homeowner policies in riskier areas. Since we're going to pay a price, wouldn't it make more sense to spend that money on mitigating climate change instead? Even if you don't directly suffer from the storms, you will notice the increase in food prices.
So many trolls on Global comment sections.
@@darlene2709 I agree with you, but they've made two assertions without facts. 1) Climate change is something we can actually do something about (this requires agreement on what's causing it, which there is no actual scientific consensus). And 2), they continue to propose solutions that make themselves richer but will DEFINITELY not fix the problem.
When someone tells you a doomsday scenario involving rising ocean levels and flooding when I can see them buying beach front property, let's just say I get a little skeptical.
Tens of mollions face the same thing every summer
Summer is here! 😱 Oh No! Hahahahahaha😂😂😂😂😂😂 Enjoy it!👍
Are you really that stupid this jesting of the planet is all natural it's happened before and it's happening again. Things will continue to get hotter and hotter just you wait and see.

They began cloud seeding in the 1890s!!! Wake up Jack, get your head from under the sand and stop being ignorant and foolish! Hahahaha 🤣 okay? 🤦👍
Are they going to do this every summer now?
Yes! Every summer they will remind us it’s hot
Depends if it keeps getting hotter. Thermometers are tough to rig when everyone can have one.
Can't you see the red in the weather map???!?
Just ignore the actual numbers. It's hot!!
@@FNWild Where you take the measurement is very easy to rig. Last summer instead of taking it a meter off the ground (which is common practice) they took official temperatures off asphalt (and got caught doing it by actual experts).
Do you think that might change the numbers just a teensy weeny bit?
Is Netanyahu right in his head? America has its own issues and people to care for.
Scare tactics of the lowest kind. Who paid all the news stations to say this crap all at the same time . Aren't they embarrassed? Notice they never say the temp!
38 degrees in northeast USA and southeast Canada. Uncharacteristic . Keep up.
@@FNWild Add in high humidity and it feels like 50C
Is that temperatures recorded in Urban Heat island’s? We know now from satellites, that cities are 5 degrees warmer than outlying rural areas. The United States population has quadrupled since 1900, expanding cities and creating new ones. Comparing temperatures from the past is unfair.
@@FNWild Uncharacteristic based on what data? We've had those kinds of numbers before, so your claim is, at best, dubious.
Pull your head in mate!
Keep the climate hysteria going,if you create enough fear, you can control them.
Fear is not created.
It is inherited.
Gotta keep shilling the "Climate Catastrophe" left wing political narrative. Global News probably has performance targets for how many stories they need to push via their propaganda.

maybe so, but you at least could give us a juicy story or two, come on....

Spare us the gaslighting! This is what a growing climate crisis looks like - excessive heat made 2X more likely by climate change. Poilievre Conservatives couldn't care less - they are fighting for the enemy. One of the worst things to ever happen to Canada was when Conservatives turned against the environment. "Climate change is the most serious environmental challenge and time is running out." - Brian Mulroney, last Progressive Conservative elected by Canadians. Now you will never hear a Conservative utter such truths. The party is rife with science denial, importing MAGA culture war tactics, and steering towards the far right. Wake up Canada!
@saulalvarez220 the earth is round. Keep up.
I found that broad leaf TREE shade helped bring down the temperature even when the temp was 55C & white cotton shirt that was loose fitting & a hat
Ahahah it’s summertime. Meanwhile, Western Canada is experiencing snow in our mountain passes and a cold summer
That's climate change for you. Some areas will actually get cooler as the overall temperatures warm.
No climate change tax will not help the U.S.A it is another country
The Planet is actually cooling.
"Pocket book" issues are not "traditional." That's a silly irrelevant boomer way of thinking. "Social conservative" issues are what's truly "traditional." Enough of this over-emphasis on economics, let's get back to what really matters here, i.e. demographic decline, decline of traditional values, etc.
pocketbook issues is what matters in life, education(common sense). People are people no matter the nationality or religious beliefs. Their values are theirs.
Pocketbook issues impact things like tradional values. Like home ownership, like playing ball in your yard with family. Family bbqs, reading on the porch. Because mom and dad working 2 jobs each leaves the kids home alone, getting into trouble. Listening to some unsavory characters to fill the lvoid left by parents, guardians trying to keep a roof, food.
So yeah whats in the pocketbooks do make a difference
Tomorrow will be 83F in Madison , WI. Big flipping deal! Liars.

@@dustingano6277 No. Definitely not. Climate change is real. We solved the ozone problem and acid rain. We can solve climate change.
And what do I hear on CBC radio last Thursday?
"Abandon concerns about urban sprawl, we need to house the poor."
Nope.
No sale.
Not when these homes without yards and "condo" sound wall buildings are what passes for combating urban sprawl.
ie: We got 60 acres, okay, let's build 40 acres of mansions for wealthy home buyers from outside of the city, their remote job can support it now, then we'll build sound barriers for them and call them condos. Yeah, they'll buy that.
Maybe some of the imports will, we won't, and we'll tell them they were stupid for buying them. Congrats, you've created conflict by only seeking profits, again.
What is amazing is political will.
Majority non voter + political will to ignore them and here we are, not implementing the newest technology that can mitigate these climate changing effects humans are having.
Do not mistake me.
Newest does not mean best. Newest often means most untested.
Still, Liberals are the Federal opposition, Conservatives are the Ontario opposition. They should not be passing laws without our consent.
We are presumed innocent of a charged offense before we can be penalized. Says so in the constitution.
Just stop pushing the narrative. It's always been groosome in the east. This is why BC westcoast is the desirable province for weather. The record number of homelessness is the issue.
All these people acting like this is normal summer weather been at it for weeks since weather has been in the news.... if you recall, it was actually spring last week. Summer started friday.

@saulalvarez220 actual the temp is Celsius your Fahrenheit. I do agree its way hotter in Arizona. Nice place too.
Earth is round. You're literally closer to the sun in Arizona. Keep up.
Its the water here. Arizona is famoulsly arid. Moisture in the air makes the temp of the air transfer into your body more efficiently and limits the cooling potential of your sweat.
