Just about the time you start thinking you know a thing or two about a thing or two, you meet a guy like this. Wow. What a wealth of knowledge and skill.
Paul Hamler is an American Treasure. His knowledge and abilities are very unique. To be able to do so many different trades: metalsmithing, jewelry, woodworking, gun smithing, and others is just phenomenal! I wish my son could apprentice with someone like Paul so the knowledge could be passed down to another generation. God bless you guys and thanks for a wonderful video.
I totally agree, a definite treasure with so much to share. Its so sad gentlemen like this are fast becoming the exception rather than the rule. Such a wide array of skills and knowledge amassed over a lifetimes experience. Today most young guys just want to dial it in and push a button, no real craftsmanship compared to these veterans. Theres a place for CNC but there should always be a place for the true craftsman.
Paul is absolutely the best machinist I've ever seen in 45 years of cranking handles!!!! He is soooooo kind to inform us in great detail,j how he accomplishes all these creations!!!!!! What a super guy!!!! Thanks so much Keith for truly fantastic videos!!!!!!!!
An amazing man with way too much knowledge for a nerd like me! I do not think I have ever seen someone so educated and informed in his many fields...brilliant.
Keith, Mr. Hamler is an amazing gentleman and a wealth of knowledge gleaned over a lifetime. I shudder when I think of what we will be loosing when men like him are gone. If I had an opportunity to know such a man I would be glued to his hip.
I find it inspiring that Paul is obviously skilled in the use of "old school" tools but is also eagerly adopting CNC technology. Add to that his ingenuity in converting tools to exceed their designed functionality and the result is almost magic. What an amazing man!
Wow. What an amazingly versatile shop with an equally amazing variety of equipment and processes, not to mention all the knowledge he has amassed and mastered to go with it-!! A rare tour of a very unique shop.
Keith: Enjoyed this video very much. Paul is so knowledgable and he has so much to tell us. Great shop, great machines and tools. Everything I like to see!! Thanks for the tour - Can't wait for the next one.
Videos like this make me feel like I don't do anything with my time. I loved seeing and hearing about all those goodies and how they worked and were converted or adapted to what he needed!
Thanks for sharing this most interesting and skilled master craftsmen. Paul is a true artisan in his field of miniture reproduction and tool manufacturing. His skill should be preved and promoted as a true artists of this incredible nation.
It is great to see these machines I haven't seen since Machinists School. No digital anything. Led was in it's infancy. You had to think and generally do the math on paper and use pencils. When doing a project we had to submit our math along with the part. I am now retired and pour larger silver pieces. Some copper and a bit of gold refining as well. Stop by for a visit when you have time. This fella is a great machinist that is far beyond his time. A rare fella indeed.
Absolutely incredible! Is this what Paul has done for a living? Or was this a hobby that went totally out of control? That is tool junky heaven. What a craftsman and he seems like a real Southern Gentleman too.
This has to be my favorite shop tour! Paul is such a humble craftsman! To see him so excited about his profession after all his years devoted to his projects, it's inspirational. Thank you Kieth for exposing his talents, had to be very overpowering to you too. I can hardly wait for your next video.
this was a mind blowing shop tour. the combination of old world craftsmanship and modern computer tech is something seldom seen. today. my fear is that the master craftsman of today are a dying breed. we need to find some young guns whose skills we can showcase. i have a 2000 sq st wood and metal workshop under my house. and in 27 yrs i have not had one young person stop by and ask "hey mister what are you doing".
larry sperling There is a mindset change I do not understand. My pharmacist, one of the few independents still left in Vancouver, made the comment that not even once has a pharmacy student ever knocked on his door to ask if there is a summer internship position. He is in his early fifties, and the students seem to think employers should chase them.A job, much less a career,is not a gift. You have to chase what you want.Pretty much the same applies to any occupation.
Back in the 1970's I can remember being told after I graduated from High School to get a job and GET OUT! I should say a better job because I have been working since I was 12, first selling flower seeds door to door then News Papers. It's now illegal to go Door to Door in my state.
Wow, what a Machinery paradise. Wish i had 1/10 of what he has. Did a centrifugal casting with Silver once. Understand him preferring the vacuum method. Never heard of that btw. Lots of beauties in his shop. Congrats !
WOW! Paul is most certainly an Acme of Perfection. If, he doesn't have his work in the Smithsonian then, it should be. Thanks Kieth for your time and sharing such a unique craftsman.
Merci Keith de nous faire visiter cet atelier de rêve !!! SUPER !!! Georges Thank you Keith for making us visit this dream workshop !!! GREAT !!! Georges
I'm positive they do so just to get people who do appreciate and at least semi understand the craftsmanship and knowledge of a man like Paul pissed off. You see the same on every top quality YT channel. Must be tough going through life with such a negative attitude like that. There has to be a very good reason for me to hit that dislike button and I've never done so on any of the machining channels. But I always say why when I do.
More total amazement and fascination. This man is truly gifted. His shop is most impressive. Have to say - I doubt I could get even close to the precision seen in these miniatures. The cutter grinder is highly desirable. There is just too much to describe all the gear - a feast of equipment. How does Paul find time to eat and sleep!
I am in total awe! Speechless! It's as if you've opened a treasure chest to reveal jewels and treasures beyond imagination. Thank you both for such a fantastic tour.
What a great series Keith. Mr. Hamler is truly one of a kind! He really makes what I do and put on a video a complete waste of time and energy. His craftsmanship and knowledge is second to none I'm sure! Thank you very much for introducing this gentleman to us, as I will be one of his first Subs when he starts shooting his video's! Sincerely, Razor!
Keith always enjoy the videos but this one was just wonderful! The craftsmanship and skill set Mr. Hamler possesses are second to none. What a true craftsmen he is!
This has to be one of my all time favorite videos. I am in total awe of this gentleman. He should be holding class 24 a day so his knowledge is passed on. He is a true treasure. And what a shop! I will be dreaming about this shop tour for a long time. Keith, my sincere thanks for sharing this with us.
You must be kidding!!! You've got this genius fellow who makes super small tools, weapons, etc... and the camera man stands across the room, (it seems), and aims the camera at the guy holding this invisible tool or whatever in his hand and starts explaining what it is, what it does, etc.... but since it is TOO SMALL FOR US TO EVEN START TO SEE IT(!!!!!), the whole thing is lost to us. It's nice to see the huge tools he uses to make this tiny creations, but, gee would it ever be so fantastic to actually see what the creation is!!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise, Hamler is so fantastic... he should be considered a national treasure. If the camera man is the same one who does Rucker's videos...and that is well done... why the heck did he leave us blind for this one???!!! Thank you for letting me vent.
old school and new school are so well represented! what a great place for learning about the many aspects of metalworking. thanks for sharing and hope to see more.
The saying "When the wife is happy, everybody is happy"..... how about, .... "When Papa is happy, everybody is happy".... I like the sound of that.... Nice looking show, very well put together... I think I need to put some effort in on cleaning of mine, it is pretty pathetic right now. I'm inspired! Thank you
Thanks so much to the both of you. I watch both videos on the edge of my seat. I would love you to do more videos on all of this. I would love to have half of Mr. Hamler's knowledge. I wish I lived closer to him I would go over there and volunteer to sweep the floors. So very interesting, MORE, MORE, MORE!!
A beautiful and very well equipped shop Mr. Hamler. It takes a great deal of skill and dedication to be a craftsman in so many different areas. I was more than interested to see your use and mention of a Wagner Safe - T - Planer in your mill. I've been doing so for a very long time and up to now have never heard of anyone else doing so. The accuracy and control required for small scale wood working is unbelievable with a mill compared to any other dedicated woodworking machine I know of other than a proper pattern makers mill.
I just shot a video that shows the safety planer on a Stanley Carter overarm rouret converting an ax handle into a blank for making a reproduction chair scraper. As soon as I master the video editing program I'll post
Thanks so much for this series of videos. I hope Paul is able to get his channel up and running. How great it would be if he could find some dedicated aspiring apprentice model makers to pass his skills on to.
Huge thumbs-up, even if for no other reason than this is true reality at it's finest. We are constantly bombarded with so much deception and lies every day, this is a wonderful break from all that.
DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keith as this fellow does small stuff, I'd LOVE to live closer to actually both of you as I like the BIG stuff, but my thing is the even smaller stuff then this fellow does! I actually scale down to 1/87:1!!!! OR 3.5MM to the scale foot! But these small tools are just right up my alley and gives me ideas for more tools for my own little shop! 😁

I'm not how he will find the time to do Videos. After watching this you can't compete with Paul. Pure Genius.
Thanks for the tour, Keith and Paul!

Duck
Looking forward to that man cave, thanks again to both of you.
Great to see the machines Paul uses to accomplish such precise work.
What a terrific tour! Thanks Keith and Paul!
Outstanding Video and tour ! Thanks for sharing from a retired toolmaker / machinist
Thank you Keith and Paul for another great video.
Absolutely incredible! Is this what Paul has done for a living? Or was this a hobby that went totally out of control? That is tool junky heaven. What a craftsman and he seems like a real Southern Gentleman too.
THANK YOU...for sharing. One of the best shop tour's I have seen on You Tube.
This is a very smart man.. Mr. Haller would be a genius at anything he chose to dedicate his life. His family must be very proud.
This has to be my favorite shop tour! Paul is such a humble craftsman! To see him so excited about his profession after all his years devoted to his projects, it's inspirational. Thank you Kieth for exposing his talents, had to be very overpowering to you too. I can hardly wait for your next video.

larry sperling I'd be over in a heartbeat to learn something new or just to learn about a new machine or see one in action!

Is there a makerspace close by? I'd go visit and see if there was anyone interested. They're out there. You just might have to invite them over.
Larry if you lived near me and I knew about it I would be over there bothering you all the time :) Although I'm not so young anymore.
Wow, what a Machinery paradise. Wish i had 1/10 of what he has. Did a centrifugal casting with Silver once. Understand him preferring the vacuum method. Never heard of that btw. Lots of beauties in his shop. Congrats !
Just checked my oxford English dictionary and under the word craftsman there is a photo of Paul. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent shop, all the machines are in correct working order, tidy great shop tour God bless you both!
Paul Hamler has a real talent. Great Shop tour

Great video ..What a wonderful shop... To be able to spend a day with this man, would be a great learning experience..
Why would people give this a thumbs down? This is pure gold!

Awesome video, I need to see more of that shop in action!
It's interesting the many geniuses are quiet and modest. I suppose they're too busy with their minds to engage in any bombast.
Thanks Keith and Paul.
super video, paul is a great teacher
Fantastic! Loved seeing this video.
Fabulous. Paul is a talented and modest guy....
I have to admit that I love Flashcut and that little Neo cnc machine is very interesting. I'd love to know more about it.
I love America !
Great work thanks for sharing
amazing shop!
Another fantastic video.
Huge thumbs-up, even if for no other reason than this is true reality at it's finest. We are constantly bombarded with so much deception and lies every day, this is a wonderful break from all that.

As he describes each and every machine "this is one of my favorites".
They are like your kids ..all favorite
Great tour. I have one of the Barnes lathes, but it isn't treadle powered anymore. I don't use it much anymore after I got the Atlas lathes.
His talent is amazing! Would love to shadow him for a year....or longer!! Hope he makes videos!
Great video.
nice to see that modern tools like 3d printing is used. i'm working on a lathe made with 3d printed parts that i will sand cast in aluminium
I served my apprenticeship on a Model A Southbend, Clausing mill just like that one, Index Model 55 mill… miss em all.
Truly enjoyed this video................
this guy is amazing, I'm very impressed
Fantastic video extremely interesting man. I hope he passes on that priceless knowledge to someone.
I wish it was me.
