The reason why Europeans jumped on WhatsApp and Americans didn’t is because texting cost money in Europe while in the US texting was included in most peoples phone plans pretty early on. Unlimited talk and text came along pretty quickly in the US. And group texting is also very easy in the US no matter what type of phone you have.

Yes. I have Android and setting up and using group texting is easy. The only way I can imagine it being easier is if I had been able to describe what I wanted without clicking or selecting.
(I can't imagine iPhone being easier for group texting. I can't imagine myself paying a premium for an iPhone. I consider the iPhone market demographics to be social influencers, their followers, people who consider it trendy or elite, and people who struggle with technology--and buy it out of fear that Android will be difficult--like the old guy I worked with who was using his laptop computer's arrow and backspace keys until someone helping him apparently watched him do it several times and clued him in on the delete key. 😂 I can imagine him in this 4th demographic. 😄)

She's comparing a single city not the entire USA. I disagree with everything she said. We have handheld showers in both baths, we have both separate handles in the main suite and single handle in the guest bathroom and kitchen. We have front load washers and agitator free top loaders available here too. She a renter has to take what's available. Homeowners can choose what they have and America has more choices than any other country. We have quality bread, dairy and cheeses if you are willing to pay more for it. The "gun" issue she takes about is not as bad in other states. She should look up the homicide rate based on weapons, knives are used twice as much as guns. You have to be a citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident of the US to legally own a gun. However, criminals always find a way around those laws. AZ has very few restrictions on alcohol and we can drink by the lake or river after work as long as we're 21 years old. She should not label the USA vs Germany if she only has experienced Cincinnati which has one of the highest crime rates in the country. We are a huge, diverse country that varies based on state, counties and laws.

The American philosophy is that w/o a gun we live under the tyranny of the strong. With a gun, even an old woman is a significant danger to a thug. There are still plenty of places in this country that a gun can be shot and no one will hear it aside from the guy who pulled the trigger. There is absolutely no safety without a gun in those places.

    • @TWillige

The average person, even in Texas, does not open carry a gun. If she's seen one, it's probably on a police officer or security guard. Also, up until the late nineties teen boys had shot guns displayed in the rear view windshield of their trucks in school parking lots. School shootings, and other gun crimes are the effect of the lack of fathers in the home and mental illness. We can't rely on police to protect us so we have to have our own means of protection. Living in any large city anywhere in the world is dangerous. At least here we have the right to defend ourselves.

Depending on where you live most big cities do not give out plastic bags anymore. Here (in NYC) they do collect recyclable deposits but it goes by weight if someone wants to return them, not by bar code. We also separate plastics, metals, paper & landfill trash. We are food snobs here in NYC and specialty gourmet shops; many specific to the neighborhood’s “original” ethnicity; (Italian, German, English, Polish, etc..) exist everywhere. As far as safety being a concern I’m from NYC and I’ve always felt safe walking around at all hours. Guns, tasers and pepper spray/mace require a license in the city and nobody I know owns a gun in the city. It’s not as crazy as most outsiders believe.

@@mrkmcdngh okay, you got me about food deserts. I'm broke as a joke but fortunately had access to good food, whether it was farmers markets, grocery stores or food banks, etc. I have always and to this day eat lots of rice, beans, potatoes, pastas and canned foods as they're cheaper and last long in the pantry.
I grew up in a rural area rather than in inner city where I hear most food deserts are. Everyone had farms or at least gardens, went hunting, fishing and foraging for wild plants. It was just how it was. I've eaten many wild greens, mushrooms, cactus, fruits and meats.
However you're right, poor ppl in cities don't even have access to wild foods and lands, most fruit trees in towns and cities are male so ppl can't get free fruit. Couple that with non walkable cities, bad public transport and cars can be expensive to own and it makes getting healthy foods practically impossible for poor ppl there.
Unfortunately it was systematically set up that way particularly for black neighborhoods. That's just the lid of that can of worms.

The issue of the dairy is a government problem. In the US supermarkets can't sell raw milk or products made from raw milk. There was an epidemic of a bacterial thing way back in the days before refrigerators and the government agency in charge doesn't like change because it would make more of their jobs obsolete. As such, they will not allow stores to sell even cheese made from raw milk. Now, how does that effect this issue? Well, quality cheese made from raw milk will have higher fat content, it will have different enzym and other compositions as well as more vitamins, the processes of Homogenizing and pasturizing causes the milk to have a different consistency and decrease of those things. In cheese making, your adding good bacteria to make the cheese and ferment the cheese, this effects the final product even with the same process because you have cooked the milk twice with oasturizing and reduced the fat in homogenizing. Now if you go to a farm, you can buy raw milk cheese but the government is currently prosecuting an Amish farmer for selling raw milk. No one got sick, he was very cautious but none the less... here we are. Cheese is no longer a raw product so they can't claim anyone is sick from it but they can find anyone sick from anything and blame it on raw milk.people don't die from it but you can get sick from poorly handled raw milk. So the cheese suffers because of that. As such some specialty stores will sell imported cheese because the laws are not pertaining to those products as long as they are a non raw product. Sad huh, gotta import and can't make it for a store. You can make it for yourself...but again... you cannot legally sell raw milk. Make friends with a farmer is the only way to have non important good cheese. This is why USA cheese sucks

To make more sense on why us in the US have such a tight grip on alcohol is because the most common mode of transport is by car. For most Americans going from point A to point B is a 30+ min drive. Since people here can get their license at 16 it allows us to have 5 years of driving experience before being legally allowed to buy alcohol. And although everyone knows not to drink and drive unfortunately there are still a lot of people that do, therefore with their experience they can drive way better while under the influence rather than a newbie behind the wheel.

    Chicago area plumber here.
Shower heads with wands are very common and in many houses. Only the cheapest don't use them. To handle faucets are still pretty common but people like them because there's an Elegance to them. I have one in my home just because I like the look of it. 9 out of 10 faucets I work on are single handle. There is almost never a two-handle faucet in a shower anymore unless it will be too difficult to put a single handle in.
The washing machine debate is all up to opinions. Front loaders are very nice but everyone I ever had died within a few years. I switched back to a top loader and they last forever.
On another note, dry towns are exceedingly rare. There may be one of them in the entire Chicago land area. I don't understand how not being able to buy alcohol after 2:00 a.m. is a detriment. Just by your alcohol beforehand and by what you need and you can party as long as you want if that's your thing.
Bank account transfers are also a very common thing. Zell is built into most Bank apps now.
I'm sure Cincinnati is different than the Chicago area or any other area for that fact and I think there is a whole lot more diversity in the US than there is in another single smaller country. Some of her points are very valid but if she went and lived in another town across the country for a few years I'm sure she would have a much different experience.

Agree with other posts that mention the filter (Cincinnati) in which she has spent the most time. (My sibling has lived in Cincinnati for several years as well, but I live over a thousand miles away near Denver, Colorado.) Remind yourself that the United States is infinitely larger than the U.K. or Germany. I appreciate the research you are doing! But, no amount of research will be better than planning a trip and experiencing a visit firsthand. Just know that what you experience in one small area is reflective of that specific area and not the entire country. There's too much to take at once, so just appreciate what's in front of you. You're taking the first steps in researching. Be bold and brave. The first step is buying your plane tickets. Then the real adventure begins. (This is how my family first started to travel. Taking a leap. Taking a breath. Then we learned and lived so much!)

L3WG: I watched both of your reaction videos to her 13 things regarding USA, and as an American who travels to and has family in England, here is some useful (I hope) information to help you translate both her comments and your comment section's comments:
Germany is slightly smaller than Montana, the U.S.'s 4th (of 50) largest state. So, as she says, we have lots of space. That space allows us to support more people (population) , but it also means our population density is much less. There are ~83 million people living in Germany, with a population density of ~239 people per square km. There are ~332 million people in USA, with a population density of ~37 people per square km. ~11.8 million people live in Ohio, which is the state she lives in. This can help explain our infrastructure (public transportation, parking spaces, house room and bathroom size) and procedural (recycling, her opinions based on her limited experiences in Cincinnati, Ohio) differences.
Those ~332 million people come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Because our country is much younger than Germany and England, and because much of our growth has come during a time where communication and travel were made drastically easier by technology, our culture is as much a blend of other cultures as it is our own. For example, of my 6 best friends, their heritage can be traced back to Cuba, Italy, Sicily, England, Cambodia, Scotland, Jamaica and Germany (parents or grandparents from different countries who moved to USA). Many of our favorite musicians and actors are from Europe, and many of our favorite cars are from Europe and Asia. Many of our favorite foods are hybridized / American-ized versions of Italian, Mexican, German and Asian dishes. There are 50 states, many of which bigger than many European countries, and each of those states has its own laws, history and culture. You yourself know there's a difference in culture even between London, Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle. This should help you decipher some of the comment sections disagreements with her assertions. Bread and cheese, for example, will be different everywhere you go. Bread especially, because it rises and tastes different depending on the water used. In states like Florida there is very low to no mineral content in our water, which apparently yields inferior bread. In states like New York the water is more ideal for making pizza dough because of its mineral content.
In regards to the purchase of a firearm for green card holders: "U.S. non-citizens with a green card, or “permanent residents”, must show proof of residency in their state for the previous 90 days in order to purchase a gun. It is also important to note that certain states may have additional prohibitions at their discretion." - a quick Google search.
I hope this blabbering was worth the read. Liked and subscribed.

Excellent response. I've watched a lot of these videos in which Europeans comment on the United States, and it's obvious that they think we're just another European country: the same size, the same homogeneous ethnic population, lots of other countries within easy traveling distance, and a central government that controls everything, so there's no variation in traffic laws, drinking laws, gun laws, sales tax, etc. from one state to another.

Ok, as a 45 yr old person from The US who has lived in multiple states i can address some of this. Not all American homes are the same and not all places are dangerous. I live in the Phoenix area and while there are for sure unsafe areas in the city where i live, i have never flet unsafe. I have lived in the city, the country and the suburbs and have never truly felt unsafe, never been robbed, and never been anywhere near an active shooter or violent crime situation. The best bread here is homemade and i ha e found you can find great cheeses and other groceries of excellent quality at upscale markets, farmers markets, and special shops. My shower has a hand held attachment, my toilets have bidets, my taps are all mixer taps, i reuse plastic bags constantly, and my children were introduced to other cultures early as part of daily life. We have never had issues with bill paying online through the bank or otherwise and only use things like Zelle if the person we are sending money to insists, or prefers that. I use a top loading washer because of my medical conditions that prevent me from bending over in the way nessesary for the front loader(which i had for years) but i have not found any difference in the quality of the washing. I may be atypical but as much as we are able we ha e the windows open, use clothes lines to dry clothes, and rarely go through drive through for anything. I understand that living in one place, especially with a higher crime rate and not seeing as much diversity she could come to these conclusions though. Your perspective changes everything.

I can go to Wal Mart and spend $100 for a week which will cover 3 meals a day plus some snacks for 7+ days. The western US sells beer/liqueur in most grocery stores and in most states you can get beer/wine at most markets/convenience stores. In some places its legal to drink in public but you can be drunk and they dont allow glass on beaches anywhere for obvious reasons. All states the drinking age is 21 due to a heavy campaign in the 80's by Ronald Reagan as he offered each of the states significant highway improvement money if they would raise the legal age to 21. This video is 3 years old. Since then, she has bought a house in Ohio. Her experiences were those of a student living in campus housing or in cheap old apartments. (1) We do not have separate fucets with hot and cold water. (2) Showers can have 3 and 4 different showers heads in the same shower. In the places she lived she could have changed it by getting a different one for $20 at any home store. They just screw on and off. (3) Most washers today are front loading. If you live in a 100 year-old building you may have a top loader. (4) No one uses checks anymore. Bills are paid with cell phone. (5) Don't know what type of jobs she had but as far back as the 1980s, that I remember, salaries are directly deposited in your bank account. I moved to another state in 1990 and opened an account, which is required to receive your salary, at a bank across the street from my new place of work. A couple of things to comment on here . First, as an appliance repair technician, even though you can't set a specific temperature on your washer , the settings for hot, warm, and cold are controlled by a thermostat to fill with a specific temperature . You will hear the hot or cold water turn on or off during the fill to control the temperature . Second, on the double or single valve sink faucets, this is decided by the person that installs the sink or faucet. Many different styles can be found wherever plumbing supplies are found. Also I seen some say that you could buy the shower head that you can mofe in the same locations.

She neglected to tell you that you paid 25 cents extra when you bought the drink. So if you don't return the bottle you paid more for the drink. We actually did that back in the 70's and it was a major pain in the a**.

It was an easy way for a kid to get a few bucks for the movies, snacks and general spending money. One thing as an an American that I can’t stand is the amount of people who discard trash on the streets…I hate to admit it but we’re slobs.

We didn't have plastic bottles when I was a kid, and cans were still made of steel, not aluminum. However, Coke bottles (any soft drink) had a 5 cents deposit that you paid when you bought the drink. However, many people didn't return the bottles. We'd ride out bikes around and pick up bottles to get the deposit. Back in the mid-1960s, you could buy a very large candy bar for a nickel.

Not to mention, at least around me, there are recycling centers that will pay you based on weight and material for bringing them metal stuff.
Depends on market value, day by day. And the "grade" of certain metals. For example, you get less per pound for soda cans than aluminum lawn chair frames (the folding ones) because it's a different type of aluminum.
In fact there are a number of people who make a living doing this around here (called scrappers), and depending on what the item is and metal prices many do not charge you to pick stuff up.

I have lived in 4 different states. Each one has its own peculiarities, recycling rules, and air conditioning. She is spot on with the bread and cheese tho. Depending where you live it’s hard to get good artisan bread. She needs a better bank.

We have hand held shower heads exactly like she's showing in Germany. But when you lease or even buy a house you usually have to install your own because it's considered an upgrade. The local Walmart in every town U.S.A. will have at least four or five different models to choose from.

You do have to keep in mind that America is huge and it's very diverse. So she's comparing one town, one area in one state to 1 town in Germany. Also most homes are now built with shower heads with attached hoses. And they're becoming more and more popular. I agree with her I do not know why it was never not a thing LOL!

America actually has a lot of quality bread and milks here and many different types as well, depends on where you buy them, best places would be farmers markets and the local bakeries, but if you are on a budget then places like price right works just as well.
I love buying sweet Hawaiian bread as well as raisen bread, cinnamon bread and Italian bread.
Either the area she lives in sucks or she hasn't expanded where she shops at.

L3WG - The tap distinction she is making is that though virtually all US faucets have just one outlet (or faucet) the control for the water can be one or two handled. She is advocating for having just one handle that you can tilt in any direction to control the hot and cold water mixture. Apparently Germany uses these almost exclusively. In America though we'll usually only have one outlet the different water temperatures (i.e. hot and cold) can be controlled by either one handle (as in Germany) or two handles. The difference between both the US/Germany and the UK is the while US and Germany have one outlet the UK usually has two separate outlets (i.e. one for hot and one for cold) and the hot and cold water does not comingle before entering the sink.

I have never used a third party system to pay a bill. I have no idea where this lady banks. I transfer my payment for my car to another bank with no issues. All my other bills are auto-drafted. I haven't gotten a paper paycheck since high school and that was a LONG time ago. I have not used a check in longer than I can remember. Also, as a WI girl I can tell you that if you can't find decent cheese in the US, you aren't looking very hard. Also, your safety depends on where you live, which I imagine is the same in any country. We for sure have handheld shower heads in our home as well as single handle faucets and a front loader washer. I don't personally know anyone who uses disposable dishes outside of party setting. Also, in WI where I grew up and in Missouri where I live now, you can have alcohol in public, including the park and in outdoor restaurants. Alcohol is sold at any supermarket or department store. It's obvious she is basing her opinions on the area she lives and not the US as a whole. Imagine thinking that no one has differing views in your country. I think her experience in both countries is probably very limited.

    • @Wyomingchief

Well obviously she's young and she's experienced one small part of the United States and obviously has led a very very very sheltered life.
Two things that she really fails to grasp, the first being that this country is about choice and every single thing she complained about is a choice that either she made or someone that she knows made. It's not because that's the way it has to be it's because somebody made that choice. She's used to living in a country that is basically homogeneous there's no differences everybody's the same and you have to do what everybody else does.
Which leads me to the second thing that she completely has absolutely no understanding on or even grasp of the concept, and that is freedom of speech. What she calls science deniers and such are simply people expressing their own beliefs and the ability to question everything but most especially the government. She lives in a country that if you express the wrong views or say certain things you can literally go to jail for that. That's why she's used to being told what is right and what is wrong and what is fact and what is fiction. Again I think she's a very very sheltered person.

She has an extremely limited experience. Ohio and the close neighboring states (Cinci is super close to both Kentucky and Indiana) have the sorts of liquor laws she mentions, but other area do not. Vegas and New Orleans have many open drinking areas where you can get alcohol to go and walk around. Other places have liquor in grocery stores and drugstores, not just a liquor store
