  • This new MLS Cup Playoffs format is...not for me. I outline what I dislike about the new format and what I think the lasting effects will be.
What do you think of the new playoff format? Is there anything you like about it?

    It's simple.
If there 8 from both Western Conference and Eastern Conference, just have:
Tournament bracket: 4 teams each for each Conference
    2 legs for each.
There will be a Western Conference Final and an Eastern Conference Final.
After those finals happen, then there will be the MLS Final between the winners of the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference. Then that will determine the winner of the MLS Cup. Seems pretty simple.

The hidden truth is FANS WANT MORE GAMES. The fans dictate how many games the market can bear, and the League simply abides. I'm an LAFC supporter, we played in ConcaChampions, Leagues Cup, US Open Cup, Campeones Cup, and Playoffs are next... AND in the middle of the season, we set a new MLS Attendance Record (82,110 at the Rose Bowl vs the GALS)! All along the way we were complaining about too many games (for our players) but the fans showed up. P.S. LAFC has 500+ fans who travelled to Costa Rica for CCL.

So many 1st-round matches didnt have sellouts including TQL for FCCincy, so the argument of more games is not valid. Games from February to December is ludicrous, season is WAY TOO LONG!!

I feel like the game between the 8th and 9th seeded teams is a bit extra. They prolly took inspiration from the NBA on that one. I don't think teams that finish below 8th in a league with 15/14 teams per conference deserves a shot at the cup.

I think the number of games is made into a way bigger deal than it really is. Look at the playoffs in other major sports such as hockey and basketball. Best of 7, for 4 rounds. That's up to 28 playoff games, on top of an 82 game season. 110 games in 1 calendar year. You can even add to that for select players the Olympics - when they occur (should the NHL allow them to go back), the All-Star game/weekend, 5-7 pre-season games and other world hockey tournaments.
I would just have them go to a 1-8 seed in each conference, and have it be a best-of-3 (or even 5) all the way to the end. No play-in round, no by for #1 seed.
Fans want more games. Managements want more monies. It's an easy solution to both.

You can not expect teams/league to improve without increasing Revenue.

I think the best of three is a weird jump. I think best of two aggregate makes the most sense for soccer. The new format getting over half the league into a playoff game is terrible though. The regular season needs to hold weight in a meaningful way

    • @e-mac314
      @e-mac314 Рік тому

I think the best of three was intended to balance out the lower seeding teams allowed in. Home field advantage for 2 games will help smooth out the randomness in other formats. Also, I bet the new tv deal played a part, as increasing revenue is definitely at the forefront of decisions right now.

Very good points! I appreciate that you are honest in what you say. I'm sick of main stream MLS media holding back they're opinions, because they don't want to make the league look bad. I am eager to see what videos you have coming in the future.

I think the reason behind the expanded playoffs is to add more meaning and gain more interest for the worse teams towards the end of the season. Due to a lack of pro/rel, the lower teams don’t have anything to root for once they are out of playoff contention so the expanded playoffs give more fans hope and I think will result in more viewership at the end of the season. I definitely do think that the higher seeds should be given more advantage such as only having to win one game and the lower seed having to win 2 in order to advance

    • @whotfisgreg8540

Agreed Mid table matches are all currently meaning a lot now at the the end of the season. There is only one team fully eliminated with on 5-6 games left. This mean game are still very competitive and no one can afford to drop a game as they yo-yo up in and out the playoff line.

The number of potential games is just ridiculous in MLS, and that’s not even counting those who play for their countries national teams.
There’s no reason to play this many games. The best thing to do would be to divide the league permanently into 2 conferences, and you play ONLY the teams in your conference home and away during the regular season.
Like any other soccer league format, 3 points per win and 1 point per draw Whoever has the most points in each conference are deemed the conference champs and they play each other in the MLS cup final at a neutral site.
And for those that complain “well it’s likely that the teams in one conference will never play the other and it’ll limit potential matchups” that’s fine. There’s still a chance they play in the US Open cup or Leagues Cup.

Playoffs for a Football league are stupid anyways. We should get rid of it or change it to its not so boring like in these other irrelevant sports.
Best of 3 without goal aggregate is a stupid system.
The best thing that would be different from other football league and different from other american sports leagues would be…
4 conferences (nort, east, west and south). All of them have 18 teams with 4 teams getting relegated and promoted and the number 1 seat of all 4 conferences go to the playoffs which isn’t elimination but all the teams play twice against each other with the normal 3-1-0 point system.
So we have a normal football league system with a kind of playoff like American sports.
