    That first bluegill is the best bluegill you'll remember that forever. Some really nice largemouth too. Nothing like a big pond that doesn't have much fishing pressure on it like that. Those beds you saw were bass spawning beds. The fish on it was the mother fish (female bass). They're pretty aggressive but not for feeding. You want to cast an artificial like that salamander or worm you had right on the bed and just twitch it lightly. The bass will pick it up to move it out of the nest or just eat it. Bam set the hook and you're on. When the bass are hitting anything you throw like they were to catch the big ones upsize your lures one size up or just bigger lures in general. So many tricks with fresh water. The bait thieves(tiny bluegill) were eating your worm quick. That'll happen especially with a bobber like you had. Just use a couple sinkers and cast it to a deep pocket and be ready. Bass, big bluegill and catfish will suck em right up. I'm sure you get tons of advice so i'll stop. I grew up with this kind of fishing I live in Knoxville TN. I really enjoyed this thanks :)

      zoffinger I just refound your channel. I watched a lot of your videos months ago but forgot the name of it. I just found it again today and subbed so I can't miss it now. You've gotten a lot more subscribers since I watched before. Man that's great! I could talk bass, bluegill and freshwater fishing in lakes/ponds all day. Sorry I wrote so much. The reason you want to throw a lizard/salamander on or near a female guarding a bass bed is because they naturally eat their eggs. So the bass will move it away if it doesn't just kill it. I'm doing it again, haha. Peace out

    • @Superunknownplants
      @Superunknownplants 9 років тому +1

      +Nate Brenneman its actually the male bass that guard the eggs...the male builds the nest,females lay eggs and go straight to deep water to recover the stress of spawning.makes sense if you think about it. if it were females on the beds there wouldnt be many bass surviving

    Marty, I was smiling ear to ear while watching this one. Those were some nice size bluegill. Watching you catch those fish took me back to fishing with my mother. Mom loves to fish for bluegill. She's actually coming to visit next week to join in on some camping and fishing. We hope to catch some then, like old times. Enjoyed watching you catch some bass too. That's my favorite fish to catch, for now, at least. There's other fish on my list that I've never caught that are feisty like bass. Time will tell on what my favorite species I enjoy catching. Great video, man. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Looking forward to your next post. Tight lines.

    Nice video there Marty! I am opposite of you, mostly a freshwater fisherman. The Heddon Superspook Jr. happens to be my favorite bass lure because of the number and quality fish it has caught. From what I saw when you where using the zoom horny toad, it looked like you were letting it sink? That lure is designed for topwater. You have to reel it in quicker and with your rod tip up to get it on the surface. You can use it for sub surface too. When I was little bluegill were all I cared about catching!

    Another fun video to watch. Bluegills and Bass are why I love to fish for them with ultralight tackle. A smaller hook does make a big difference! Often use size 10, 12 and even eighteen sometimes. Plus bluegills are a great fish for teaching someone how to fish. And every now and then you nail a 2lb+ "bull" bluegill that makes your whole day! Try ultralight, I think you will enjoy the challenge.

    Great vid Marty. Really enjoyed this one.
    A few tips for freshwater fishing that may help you hook up a bit more with bass...
    If you are fishing topwater, wait a solid 1.5 to 2 seconds to set the hook after they explode on the surface. This will ensure they have the bait firmly in their mouth. If you are using soft plastics with the hook tip buried in the body of the lure, a really firm hook set is necessary.
    Also, I noticed that you were bass fishing almost exclusively with topwater, save for the power worm. Topwater is very exciting and fun, but it also targets the most aggressive bass. These are often times juveniles or smaller bass. I have found that by working a slowly sinking soft plastic worm or creature bait, working it very very slowly, twitching every 5 seconds or so, I will hook up with the bigger mature bass that may be reluctant to slam a topwater frog. My favorite go to lure is a 5 inch Yamamoto Senko. Color varies with water clarity. They seem to produce consistant results when other techniques like spinners, topwater, crankbaits, and buzzbaits come up empty. I really enjoy slow finesse fishing. The suspense is part of the fun!
    Just my opinion, there are plenty of power bass fisherman that have caught much bigger fish than I :)
    Good luck, tight lines, and keep the great vids coming!

    That big fish you saw by the hole was probably a plecostomus, a common algae eater. They actually dig holes. Can't really get them to eat everything. The small sunfish like bluegill also create nests that just look like big bowls and protect them when they have eggs in them. Cool stuff.

    I will share something I learned a few years ago that solved a problem I have had with these little guys for a long time. They are so aggressive they often swallow the hook and it is very difficult to get it out of the tiny mouths without killing them when they are deep hooked. One day I thought "circle hooks". I could not find any near small enough but I did have some Eagle Claw #6 fine wire Aberdeen. They were easy to modify into circle hooks with some needle nose pliers by bending the point in a little and reforming the shape a little. It completely solved the deep hooking problem. All nicely hooked in the corner of the mouth. Circle hooks score again.

    • @zoffinger
      @zoffinger  9 років тому

      +Charles Laird I would've thought that would break the hooks. Did you have to heat them up first? I'd like to try that someday.

    • @charleslaird870
      @charleslaird870 9 років тому

      No, the metal is a little springy but it bends ok. The only thing I ever had any trouble bending was the points and they do ok as long as you don't try anything too radical. The easiest shape to bend that I came up with is roughly like the shape of the Owner Circle Light hook. I had some different #8s I used as well but they had a wicked offset to deal with. I always get rid of any offset and make them strictly in line like tournament specification hooks. Offsets just invite deep hooking. Circles work well for catching pinfish for bait. Keep up the good work.

    Great video! I saw your facebook status about getting this one rendered and was really looking forward to seeing it. I grew up catching bluegill and still enjoy it - especially on a fly rod. Next time you go out for bluegill, try some Gulp earthworms. I just use a tiny little piece of one on a number 12 Eagle Claw circle hook. They really love those little worms and the circle hook catches them right in the corner of the mouth every time.

    Hey brother! I just found your channel today and I really enjoy your videos! I'm definitely going to subscribe after this comment is posted. A lot of your fishing videos are catching species outside of what I've ever caught, but I can give you a couple tips when it comes to bass (largemouth, I haven't caught enough smallmouth to know), crappie, and perch (bluegill). I know you caught a bass reeling that worm but sometimes they are pretty lethargic and some finesse techniques would definitely land you more fish and bigger bass. As far as the bluegill, crappie jig tubes is the best way to go if you run out of worms or crickets. Usually I can get 6-8 bluegill on a single jig. Trust me I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all but I've been catching these fish since I was probably three years old. I paused the video half way through to type this out so I haven't gotten this far yet, but you can fit 3-4 bluegill on a single clip on your stringer :) I'd love to see some bass fishing videos in the future, there may be some up but like I said I just got on your channel so I'm not very far through your videos. Long comment but just wanted to throw in my two cents and say keep up the good work! - Ryan

    just some tips for the smaller bluegill. (I fish for them when bass aren't biting) try cutting the worms into 4th or even 5th and have the hook sick out. (almost like a Texas rig) catches them left and right!
    love the vids, keep it up!

    Marty for rigging crickets the hook goes through the butt, through the body, and out the head. The head is hard and keeps the bluegill from taking the cricket off the hook in one bite. I've fished freshwater all my life but I'm getting into saltwater. Next you should try fishing for crappie. They taste amazing and not how they're named haha

    Soft plastic frogs and worms are difficult to get a good hookset when using an uglystick as the rods tip is to limber or springy try a rod with a stiffer tip such as a berkly cherrywood ( about 35 dollars online ) this will increase your landing ratio on soft plastics. Great video

    Zoffinger, you need to catch some of those smaller bluegill by the docks and then put them under a bobber on a bigger pole and catch some bigger bass. Nothing like watching a bass hammer a bluegill on the surface!

    Nice little pond there. We catch a bunch of bluegill up here. They are good eating too. My biggest is 12 inches, it's still at my taxidermy place. Thanks for reminding me to give him a call. You ever get crappie down your way?? Nice video buddy..

    That was a neat video, but quick question where did you get the little spinning reel on your ice rod and what size and brand was it.

    Zoffinger the bobbers u use in saltwater like the ones with beads on them. I suggest that u use soft plastics like gulp,doa shrimp,pattle tail grubs,etc. what u should is get one of those rig it up and pop the cork aka the bobbers and that will attract the fish and then they hear it then they see the soft plastic and boom u got them. But i think u should pop the cork like every 10 to 30 sec. I hope this helps good luck god bless and tight lines

    Dig it video. I've been catching these guys since I could hold a Cane pole with a bobber. Now I'm s Fly Fishing "SNOB" and just caught some for the first time in 35 years. WHAT A GAS!!
    Small hooks was no brainier but try Meal Worm's, they are sturdier and just barely cover the hook, you won't miss another.. I'd show a picture of the SLAB I caught but can't figure out how to add photos..

    As far as catching bluegil goes, a very useful rig for me is to take a little snap on weight and put it 6 inches above the hook so it can sink a bit faster and you can feel the bite. Nice video
