- Here is part ii of my Q&A through Passau, and this part is in English! I realized that this video is much more of a tour than the other one I made and in it you can see the point where the three rivers meet in Passau along with the Oberhaus and the Schaiblingsturm which is in the thumbnail! Some of the questions I answered of course have to do with my exchange but others include bad experiences I’ve had in Germany, flying during COVID times, where to fly when flying into Germany, and more. I hope you all enjoy :)

Who am I?
My name is Montana Showalter, and I was a participant in the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program in 2019-2020. I started my UA-cam channel while living in Germany and continue to make videos on German vs American culture. I love finding aspects of German culture in the US as well as producing videos in German as practice! In the future, I hope to live abroad again :)

The legal age for driving actually throughout Europe is 18. Getting the driver license is way harder here as well. When I talked to a colleague in the US about it (he has never been in Europe) he thought the training and test is for professional driver.
Basically you can also drive a car at 17 in Germany, but you need somebody who’s older than 30 and also has a drivers license since at least 5 years to ride shotgun (thus typically the parents).
Then there‘s also the possibility in Germany to get a drivers license for 125ccm motorcycles, mopeds etc. at 16.

In the Uk it’s 17 When you start learning to drive.
But no one uses cars in Europe, they all use the public transport
@@CesarGarcia-nd5xz Maybe in the city centers. But the further you get away from the big cities the more you need a car. I have two in my garage.
You clearly felt uncomfortable because you got yelled at and as a German I feel so ashamed. I hate it when fellow Germans act like their whole privacy would be leaked to the public and in reality there is just "some random person filming a nice scenery". A minute later they are checking all of their social media accounts - those kind of geniuses are so braindead and embarassing. Keep going!
Could you explain more about why this is? I didn't understand what she was saying about "data restrictions." What are they angry about and when did that start happening?
I agree yelling is NOT the right way. But I wouldn't want to have my face in some random youtube video either. That's what the EU Privacy and Data Laws are for and in place. You can not record someone without their permission - that is the law. So when someone is filming they have the responsibility to make sure other people are not in the shot or so far away they are unrecognizable. If you do happen to film someone up close you need to blur them in the video. Just my point of view on that matter -Nothing against Montana, she makes wonderful content!

There is something I noticed, and the best way to describe it is that you seem to have grown into your face. It's like the real Montana has come out and it is nice finally seeing her. :)
The bus situation actually really depends on where you’re in Germany. Where I am from (a little village in NRW), you can’t rely at all on busses nor trains. So in some parts you don’t need a car at all and in others you are super reliant on a car…
Aber mit eine Elektrorad sieht es wieder ganz anders aus, denn ich wohne hier im tiefsten Baierwald und fahre winters, wie sommers alle meine Strecken mit meinem tollen E-Rad, wodurch ich oft viel schneller am Ziele bin, wie mit dem Bus, weil man die Warte- und Fahrtzeit einspart, sich an keinen Fahrplan halten muß und außerdem stolz auf den gesundheitlichen und Umwelt-Effekt ist.
@@Rainerjgs Das stimmt natürlich. Leider sind hier die Radwege außerorts nicht wirklich ausgebaut und die Straßen oft zu gefährlich, um darauf Rad zu fahren. Auch an Stellplätzen für Fahrräder mangelt es extrem und dort wo es welche gibt, werden Fahrräder häufig beschädigt… Keine gute Ausgangslage fürs Rad fahren, geschweige den ein E-Bike.
I noticed that the age difference thing as well. The Americans I talk to online often act pretty shocked about in my opinion rather small age differences. Like I was 18 when I started dating my husband who was 23 and sure people noticed the age difference, but I feel like people judge the relationship itself, not the ages.
With her talking about age difference I was thinking .. more than 10 years ... is that true? 4-5 years might be recognized but is definitely common and I think nothing about it. But Im German...

Nice video! And yes, we DO have grumpy people too, as every country has :) You did right and shrug it off, they are not bad, just seeing things different. When I went to the States at 19, I had no driving license and ppl were really puzled about that fact. But as you said, we have great public transportaton. And to the last part: my GF is 11 years younger than me an it works just fine :) If the chemistry is right and the interests align, it works.

Now, recipies are a good source of learning a language, 'cause you see what the chefs are doing. And the vocabulary to learn is pretty limited. Every single word: one more ingredient.
Plus: you will use it anyways, when cooking: instant usage, of what you just learned.

I didn't know that the age gap is such a big thing in the US. Here in central Germany (Sachsen) it is pretty normal to date people which are older or younger than yourself. When it fits, it fits you know? When my wife starts dating me 8 years ago she was 26 and i was 35. She mentioned that the all guys in her age where no usable material especially for conversations. :-)
My oldest daughter is 19 now. She chooses a man who is at my age now. But she seems to be very happy with him. So who i'am to say no to my daughter and destroy her little luck? I know this is very uncommon also in Germany but i give a damn about what other people might say.

Oh wow, UA-cam really surprised me with that suggestion. Passau is very beautiful and Im very proud to be born/living very close to it, but I guess youtube videos about Passau are really rare.
The tower is called Schaiblingsturm, it was first constructed in 1250.
Als Passauer weiß ich, daß hier die Salzschiffe von Salzburg kommend festgemacht haben, um Ihre großen Salz-Scheiben auszuladen und daher der Name.
Später traf sich in diesem Turm die katholische, studierende Jugend, kurz KSJ genannt, um ihre Gruppenstunden im dieser romantischen Umgebung abzuhalten.
Passau ist eine sehr schöne, hoch interessante Weltstadt, denn von hier aus wurde das Ungarnland missioniert und vom Bischhof von Passau aus regiert, der ein großer Fürst-Bischhof war, mit eigenen Ländereien bis ins Böhmische (Tschenland) hinein.

I think it got the roof in 1481, apart from that it was only renovated but stayed basically the same on the exterior.

I am trying to get into a scholarship so that I can study abroad and move to Germany. Ever since 4th grade I have been very interested in Germany. I am a quarter German, my German ancestors came from Baden-Württemberg, around Esslingen. It would be a dream come true to move there. I am saving my money right now incase I don't get a scholarship lol. I have a few years until I have the ability to study there of course, but I am still very excited.

Ich komme aus Norddeutschland und war nie in Passau. Sieht wirklich mega schön aus. Gibt bestimmt viele Urlauber dort.
Ja, es gibt sehr viele Urlauber bei uns in Passau ... auf der einen Seite gut (für die Wirtschaft), auf der anderen Seite in der Saison etwas (zu) voll. Die Stadt Passau hat knapp über 50.000 Einwohner, was im Vergleich zu anderen Städten eher sehr wenig ist. 2018 hat der Tourismusverband veröffentlich, dass es in Passau knapp 600.000 Übernachtungen gab.
Lohnt sich- Wir fuhren mit der Bahn dorthin und dann ging es die Donau 'runter bis Budapest. Klar, "Rentnerurlaub", aber schön.
9:31 it never hurts to date people at different ages. I am a guy, who dated from 12 years younger than me, to 14 years older than me, and obviously also between. All i can tell you, is that relationships with more mature women are completely different to the ones compared to with similar old or younger ones. Dating older women was refreshing, because they have a completely different perspectives, and interests, aswell as they dont turn jealous or angry once you cant answer their msg's instantly ;) PS: Dunno if its the same with older men, not my territory.

o wow, i once was on a demo in Passau at young age and fell in love with a local girl. sadly we lost contact in the trouble there. what thing to talk about love just there.
If you get along with a person very well, age doesn't matter. When I was about 30 I dated a 19 year old for some time, later I met a 40 year old.
Also, an old female classmate of mine who is also mid-30, got engaged to a 54 year old guy. She started to date older guys (20+) when she became 14. 🤷♂️
I am so sorry if you got yelled at, probably certain people are likely to yell. But I cannot figure out why someone would yell at you unless they have issues concerning themselves … do young people do that? Because some older people are just lonely and they would seek contact via being angry 😬😧
People have the right to their own picture. You're not allowed to film someone unless they give permission or it's a crowd.

The yelling thing is a part why Germans are mostly more efficient than others. I discussed it with my English teacher (she is from South Africa and was addicted to the english way of living) and could explain what it means.
In Germany we tell people normally straight away what they did wrong. In England or in the US as I have learned you do not "hit the bush" immediately you circle around it many times without really saying who did what in a wrong way. At least at work it is the cultural behaviour at our subsideries. When we are straight on point it will show our colleagues how rude we Germans are when we give advices or sometimes orders to them. Nowadays I try to write more polite and excessive to avoid anger and hurt feelings.
The nicer way has advantages too. If you get wrongly shouted at it will create anger and its difficult to find a new start.

@@mr.t993 Du vermischt da zwei Sachen. Diese Mentalität des nicht Hinterfragens und von sich auf andere schließens, auf die du hinweist, ist zwar wirklich ein Problem. Aber die gibt es sowohl bei der "deutschen Art", als auch der "amerikanischen Art", sie wird nur verschieden ausgedrückt. Bei den Deutschen halt direkter und bei den Amerikanern eher durch die Blume bzw. passiv-aggressiv. Natürlich kann man die deutsche Art als unfreundlich betrachten, aber es geht mir halt darum, dass das ein separater Punkt ist.

The data privacy law clearly states : if people in an open space are photographed or filmed as being part of a larger view or landscape , they have NO right for privacy whatsoever ! In the above example : You are not filming them, you are filming the X-Mas market ! I tell this to everyone insisting to try stop me from filming , and if they yell at me , that’s the point where it’s ME who gets angry !
It is not that easy. That only applies if you are not publishing the material. Putting it in youtube IS publishing.

Interesting. I watch and subscribe to almost a dozen Germany-related UA-cam channels (having been stationed there for two years in the Army), and none of those UA-camrs ever seem to have a problem filming. I don't know. Maybe I should take another look at the number of other Germans in their videos. It's possible they're very careful, as you suggested.
I plan to visit Germany for the first time in years, and I want to do lots of recording, but I don't want my vacation ruined by confrontations with the locals. Thanks for bringing this to light. As you probably know, here in the U.S. there is no expectation of such privacy when you're out in public. Honestly, I think the best answer lies somewhere in between. For example, if you're on a public street, it should be okay that you're in the scene as a random person walking by or whatever, but not okay if the camera is actually focused on you without your permission.
yup, but Europe/Germany has a stronger "private rights" law since 2018. The law is named DGSVO / BMWi. Its illegal to film others without permit if you could identify the person and you want to put the videos Online for example. For private use its okay to film everything. Even TV stations start to blur out faces of persons in the background to avoid legal complains. i personaly think its over the top too and many people dont take note of this at all. But if someone whats to sue you or sent you a legal warning letter, they could. Also i think 98% of the people dont even care. But you will always have those 2 % Karens left. There are only a few exceptions from this rule. Panorama rights and filming at public Parades, Parties and similar stuff.

Another perspective on the Dating Age Gap in Germany is that when you're male your high school years are prone to be miserable. Because of course you'll have a crush on a girl or two from your school, that's what boys this age do. But those girls, they actually _want_ to have boyfriends being at least 3 to 4 years older than themselves.
Reason is high school girls assume boys their age to be puerile, immature, and vulgar. And, sadly, that's a fair point. Most boys that age are jerks. But try to convince a girl that you're not. I, for one, never managed to do so in my high school years.
Luckily, for me those years are long gone. I don't look back in anger, but I don't look back in nostalgia either.
Mir ist vor allem aufgefallen, dass die meisten Jungs, die Freundinnen hatten, diese paar Jahrgänge jünger waren. Aber es gab natürlich trotzdem auch Beziehungen mit gleichaltrigen.
@@xm01 Letztere bestehen aber zum überwiegenden Teil schon seit Jahren und halten den relevanten Zeitrahmen hindurch auch (war zumindest an meiner Schule in allen mir bekannten Fällen so). Die betreffenden Mädels sind also "vom Markt".

I slept in a Hotel once in Passau that looked like a shoe and the rooms where hardly bigger than then the bed, but is was cosy and cheap. Do you know that ? It was at the river.
There is a hotel, which is called the lying man..As it is a man lying down, and is very small, as it’s meant for cyclists travelling through, and needing cheap accommodation.

I'm so happy you did a second part of that Q&A! Any chance we get a third part? 😏 Either way, I love when you're just rambling about Germany, yet your fascination about Germany still boggles my mind. It's literally so boring here. 🤣 But still I feel like you're one of very few people from outside of Germany who actually like the place. If you talk with someone and ask them where they wanna travel and go on vacation to, Germany never makes the list. It's always either America, Spain, Italy or something. But Germany? Never. And honestly I can understand the people. 😆

Austria here. I like to visit Germany.
Try Belarus, Romania, Serbia, Mexico, Malaysia heck even Greece besides the white beaches. And then take a second look at Germany. Organized, neat, and above all clean and predictable. Just overall nice. Of course the Great Wall is more imposing. Or The Vesuv. Or the Schiefe Turm of Pisa. I like the organized chaos of the Italians or Romanians. But i also like the predictable clean environment of the Germans.
I'm American and I've wanted to go to Germany since 6th grade. I'm finally here 7 years later on an exchange year and it's amazing! In my opinion it's such an underrated country

How could anyone yell at a beautiful girl like you? As for filming. There is a French tour guide on UA-cam. People in French sometimes don't want to be filmed so they cover their faces or walk away rather than yelling. As for dating: When I was dating my late wife, she was 13 years younger than I am. Her parents didn't like it and we just ignored them since she was 21 at the time.

I've got to be honest for a second, when I saw the title I thought you meant Age Gaps like 2-3 years.
And yeah that made sense to me because those are pretty common. I would almost say the guy being a year older than the girl is actually like an unspoken rule because most girl are so much more mature than guys until around thirty (I feel like that's where the maturity starts either evening out or becoming irrelevant in some other way).
But as a born and raised German (northern though, don't know maybe that makes a difference) I can unequivocally say that the one girl I do actually know who is dating a guy five years older than herself is considered a major exception by everyone in our shared group of friends. We're still accepting of it but let's just say it was a major piece of gossip for a while regardless.
Would never consider a smaller age gap weird though, so maybe I'm hypocritical for that. I think as long as you're in the same phase of your life you'll get by just fine.

Its not good to yelling at people... but did you understand why the people yelled at you on a Christmas market? It's often because this people thay sell things there its there own idea what thay sell ... and it give groups from ... maybe Poland or Lithuania thay go arround and make photos and than the next Christmas you can find the ideas from the seller in internet for a cheap price. This foraign people go everywhere make photos from there handmade things and built it also . Montana visit the north from germany... the eastsee.... dont go to the northsee... eastsee is more nice. It give nice beaches there . The island fehmarn is very nice I was often there.

About the age thing: I never cared. My 1st gf was 10yrs older than me. (my former history teacher). Next gf 2 yrs younger.
6 years with a woman, 16 years younger than me.
Next gf 4 yrs older. My wife was same age as me (do 4 weeks count?) Lost her to a car accident.
My fiancée is 14 yrs younger. Do I care about age? I care about minds.

It isn't really a big thing in Germany... I mean the age difference and I think it never was. My grandma is now 89 years old and was 11 years younger than my grandpa.

I'm quite puzzled that you have that often been yelled at?! Certainly not part of the usual German everyday experience. Of course it happens, but really often? Weird. And while I do see that there are enough people out there who deserve being yelled at for various reasons, I fail to see how you could qualify for that. :-)
There are people who just can't stand when others are cheerful. Maybe because it reminds them of their own misery.
Some people never really grew up in that regard (being comfortable with your own emotions, accepting them and dealing with them without projecting onto others), even when they have grown old.
Well, privacy is an important thing here in Germany. Of course you have a high propability of getting yelled at, if you take videos/pictures of people without their consent. In a way it is like assaulting people...
Was du für einen Stuss du erzählst. Als würde sie den Leuten die Kameras Gesicht halten. Sie filmt ganz normal im öffentlich Raum und die Menschen sind mit Sicherheit überhaupt nicht im Fokus . Das ist so weit von "assault" weg, aber Hauptsache die Leute haben jemanden zum anbölken. Das ist wieder so typisch Deutsch und danach im Supermarkt die Payback Karte rausholen - genau mein Humor.
Why talk so much about Germany as an American? Because the US need some self reflection. There is so much going wrong there and you guys need to look outside your country to get things better done.

Can't argue with you there. The US is having a lot of problems and is in deeper trouble than people realize. The national debt is out of control and the rate of inflation is rising fast. The government's answer is to keep adding trillions of more to the national debt and to print more money to keep from defaulting on the debt. The US is bankrupt. It is just a matter of time before the economy collapses, like it did in the Weimar Republic. They are starting to call up the military to assist in the hospitals and schools. It is just the beginning of a military police state

Panoramafreiheit has nothing to do with filming people, it's about filming buildings, objects, etc.
