    This is a very well done video! Very informative - could you tell me why you glued two pieces together for sizing rather than cutting a board to size?

    • @AustinMakesVids
      @AustinMakesVids  6 років тому +2

      Hey, thanks for asking bro! I had to glue the pieces together because, in this design, the side pieces are on the outside of the front and back pieces. Since the front and back pieces of the birdhouse are the width of the plank, if I just put the roof on without making it wider it would just fall into the top. Make sense?

    I have a conventional bluebird nest house and this year has been great. This is the first year my bluebirds have raised their chicks to fledgling stage. They have raised two broods and have laid five more eggs for a total of three sets! I had the box on a fence and lost eggs to predation or one time the adults hatched three chicks and then abandoned the nest. This new house is on a pole with a baffle around the pole. It is working.

    Thanks for this well done offering: straightforward design, nice tone and pace, and excellent video quality. Any basic craftsman can tweak the design build as desired.
    Perhaps you could take just a minute to explain why this design is more effective? A lot of us have had issues with other birds, predators - and the design is fundamental for solving those problems. Perhaps provide some links to references?
    BTW - I like the long roll out work table with home below for larger tools. I'm going to steal that solution for my garage : )

      If you want it to last more than a year or so, you need to use either cedar or treated wood. The horizontal pieces can tend to cup and split in no time. A good alternative is a Gilbertson design.

    Former property owner has several Blue Bird houses on the Ponderosa Pines here. Three mornings ago a young Cinnamon Bear destroyed the Blue Bird house and the bird couple kept flying back and forth as they witnessed all their work destroyed in seconds. I want to replace that same tree with a Blue Bird house and am wondering if I go higher on the tree, would still attract the Blue Birds ? Your houses are maybe four to five feet off the ground and that will not work here.

      From SFgate.com "The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service recommends a maximum height of 7 feet; the Missouri Department of Conservation recommends a maximum height of 6 feet." I would say you can certainly put it as high as 7 feet but any higher than that might not be attractive to a blue bird.

    You may want to consider some snake guards for your bird houses. This year I have had two instances, one after it had eaten the mother bird & chicks. Greasing or oiling pvc, metal, .etc mounting posts or installing inverted buckets, stove pipes are not really effective. So you are left with two options. 1) ua-cam.com/video/LL8hdxUGtMk/v-deo.html 2) Install multiple layers of netting about two feet from ground around mounting pole, about 16 inches wide. For illustration google Harry Krueger Snake Trap Plan. It stopped a snake from eating birds in my 2nd house. You WILL have birds eaten by black snakes without an EFFECTIVE snake guard.

    Switch the drivers. I use my impact to drill the pilot holes and my drill-driver to drive the screws with the appropriate clutch setting. Impact drivers are much too powerful and will split the wood even with a pilot hole. Also, it's not really necessary to cut grooves as the nest height is very close to the hole and the fledglings can easily jump up to the hole. If they can't they shouldn't be flying anyway...

      It actually did very well last year, it stayed occupied most of the summer. I already have a couple of them scouting it out for this year. I may do a follow-up video. The sparrows definitely were interested in it, but it seemed like the bluebirds were able to fend them off. I have read that this shape helps them defend it easier, and that sure seems to be the case.

      @@AustinMakesVids I saw another bluebird house plan that was designed to be less desirable to the invasive sparrow. In that video he drilled a hole in the top of the birdhouse then covered the top with Plexiglas. He indicated that the invasive sparrow prefers a dimly lit interior .. so the top hole lets in light which bothers sparrows .. whereas it does not bother bluebirds at all. Guessing that your entry slot, across the width of the top, lets in more light to the save effect of deterring sparrows.

      I like all kinds of birds, don't get me wrong. However, the common sparrow is actually an invasive species. They aren't originally from North America and have competed against native birds for resources. I am not doing anything to eliminate the sparrows, however I AM giving the native bird species a better chance of survival. Sparrows are very territorial, and I don't just mean their box. They are territorial over large areas and other birds aren't welcome to even coexist. So they will run them off and destroy/take over their nests. Thanks for watching!

Can't tell you how many years I'd have a nest of bluebirds and later find the mother/father or babies dead in spots all over the yard (after noticing a few days prior to sparrows were fighting with them). Never round a dead sparrow so I assume the bluebirds aren't as aggressive.
