I know this is old, but you do not know how helpful this is for me. I have been recently sketching out an idea for a clay sculpture involving scale like surfaces and this tutorial is really helpful! It is also nice to see another sculptor work in the realm of making creatures, since that is what I have found the most passion in making
I think all the best artists make monsters. Humans are simple, you have infinite reference material, monsters however require intense imagination. In my opinion :)
Thank you distortions and Tom Cassidy. This was a great instructional video. I love learning anything more about sculpting. it helps me to grow as a sculptor. These lessons are all very good!
A very interesting and informative video. I use polymer clay to make jewelry, but I am always interested in organic textures. Thank you for encouraging people to pursue their creative dreams and not let negativity discourage them. I also appreciate your use of anatomical/physiological terms to encourage young people in school to pay attention in anatomy and science classes. Well done.
Thank you guys for making videos like this. Inspires weirdoes like me who wouldn't have any knowledge of how to get started, otherwise. Next weekend I'm gonna take the plunge and make my first latex mask. :)
I'm an viewer in Dublin .Ireland. You give a good tutorrial, technique was well worth the demo. You have a good delivery and a controlled presence.Hope you make more.... also liked the bit from the heart about your school days. Good Luck.
Hi Tom! Beautiful scales, they look real and beautiful! :) Very good job! I would love to see how you could make some mermaid/merman scales for a mermaid/merman tail! :)
Awesome tutorial, I start sculpting in December 3h per week but not every week due to my work. Well my goal is too creature huge Dragon head, and I wondered... I know you already explain but as I’m french I’m not a pro to understand everything in english... could tell me why did you use baby powder and alcohol
wow. ..just incredible. we live in Littleton. when you were ralking about your teacher it was like you were talking about my 11yr. old girl. she has been drawing dragons and monsters since kindergarden. she lives to sculpt... i would love to bring her up to see what you guys do. .. thx for the video
I got a lot from your demo. I have an old anchor that I painted scales on over 5 years ago. The paint in coming off and now I want to get more dimensional. You have laid out the ground work very well. Can you recommend a medium that will dry hard on a metal anchor and when sealed will resist the weather? I was thinking of a stucco type product. Price is a consideration, but the primary thing is for the work to hold up in Washington's rain. Oh, what did you use for the dinosaur's eye?
Nice tutorial...Roma Plastilina?i missed what clay you are using...no matter...nice reference to Brian Wade...an old and dear friend...he is truly awesom.
Great alcohol tip! Thanks! I got the same hate fro m teachers when I made monsters in college, too. I graduated in 1989 and hoped things had improved since the stone ages. I could have made monsters for the past 28 years, but I am now!
Thanks for NOT adding distracting background music. Good tutorial.

Thanks for your message and so glad it was helpful! Wishing you all the best on your projects from the Distortions Unlimited crew!
Great tutorial and what a great backstory, Tom. Very inspirational. I love when people rise above the naysayers.
An art teacher imposing limits on creativity? I'm without words. Way to preservere!
most informative video i have found on sculpting scales. great work also some of the finest scales iv seen

The most simple things are the hardest one and takes more time then the monsters ..!
Great Video! Thanks guys
Thanks for watching!

Thought this was bullshit until you hit it with the spray and brushed--really made everything coalesce. I'm a fan now. Sub earned. Good job man.
Sweet. Thanks for the tutorial.
Check out our list of what clay we use and supplies in the video description. (Amazon Affiliate Links)

Thank you for the video. Much appreciated.
Very informative. Thanks, this helped for my army of "V" Visitors monster/aliens I made for this Halloween. Wish I could upload a pic to show you.
very helpful!
Now. Do you ever fire your works at all? If you do does the rubbing alcohol create an issue with that?
Can this also be done to monster clay?
Nice tutorial...Roma Plastilina?i missed what clay you are using...no matter...nice reference to Brian Wade...an old and dear friend...he is truly awesom.
Very informative! I will certainly try it.(Though I don't like the monster/evil part of it).
Can i use these same techniques on medium monster clay?
16:35 looks more like a Tapajara than a pterodactyl
Thanks
Freakin awesome!
Can this method be done on cement
very nice !!!
what kind of clay should i use for heads
This is what I want to do, I really enjoy making monsters. Tips?
Great alcohol tip! Thanks! I got the same hate fro m teachers when I made monsters in college, too. I graduated in 1989 and hoped things had improved since the stone ages. I could have made monsters for the past 28 years, but I am now!
That’s cool, it’s like playing (tick-tat-toe) X’s and 0’s.
Lines and circles, learned that in the first grade, and they turned into 9’s.😊
thank you
What percentage of alcohol are you using? The usual 70% if rubbing alcohol? Or diluted?
i hear 99 percent is the best. the video said 91-99 .
Thanks.
What kind of clay do you use?
We use Laguna WED to sculpt
Where can one get modeling clay thats not going to cost me a small fortune?
I like It 🇨🇴🇨🇴
"...start to get TOO many fumes..." 👌
thank god you did not listen to the art teacher thanks for a great instructional vid best of luck
7'5in
Very impressive sir, thank you for what I have learned from you, just awesome - @aerdragon
Very cool, I wonder if your professor asked you to throw a pot on a wheel and you submitted a rad monster face? -
did you go back to that teacher and tell her and show her ...............yes i can make monsters ?
Mentor, that’s the word you were looking for.
Gotta love those types of teachers. You aren't making horses and I don't like it so you are doing art wrong...smh
its so terrible when a teacher tries to squash a kids talent ..there is no right or wrong in art .......art is art .....i know im an artist
thumbs down because you called whatever that is in the beginning a pterodactyl, also what you ended up making was more like osteoderms than scales.
