- Click to subscribe: zps.to/Subscrib... Cesar Millan gives tips about adopting animals from pet shelters so you can bring home your new best friend this Pawlidayz season. Zappos.com and North Shore Animal League is welcoming you to adopt a furry family member from Black Friday, November 24th to November 26th for FREE!
Cesar says that potential pet owners need to assess the animal, not the animal's story that is told by the shelter. No matter the animal's history, observing how the animal acts both inside and outside of the shelter crate is key.

I love that he shows that all dogs can find a home, as long as they are a right fit for the owner
Danica D every pup deserves love!
Lucky Cat have you tried showing them pictures of these animals adorable little faces??? 😍😍😍
Dogs aren't only for company, they are living beings. They get hungry, thirsty, cold, hot, and sick. If you want to have a pet, you must commit with your parents and with yourself to take care of the dog with your own life, because it will do the same thing for you. Get a job, in the case you don't have one already, and use the money to buy dog food and everything else a dog might need, clean the dog's deeds and make sure you train it properly. Trust me, a dog can improve your life if you put sincere effort to improve his... Cheers!
Is a pitbull a good gaurding dog
Pet love Tv yes. In the 1800s, families used to use pit bulls as babysitters. Any breed can be vicious. It all depends on the human.
Don't judge them with breeds because they don't judge you with race- one of most beautiful thing i heard today.
+the silly panda army so true!
i thought that different breeds were bred for certain characteristics though... So if you're looking for something specific, stereotyping isn't necessarily bad.
sinful sink respectfully agreed
Provocateur - thats weird. I bought 6 chihuahuas and they formed a special forces unit. i heard a few "pops" one night, and dont recall the rat making anymore noise. Im sure they just chased it out of the house though
i hate to say this cause your statement is true but my dog is racist
I have adopted all my life. But i think from now on, I will be adopting senior dogs because they deserve a home for the rest of their years.
That is so sweet!
We got an eight and a half years old senior dog rescued from Hurricane Katrina with a bum leg from it at a no kill shelter in Dallas Texas that greatly and lovingly lived with us for another six years, even with heart disease. No regrets about adopting that sweet girl at her age! It's incredibly worth it to them and to your own heart to see a dog or cat through their golden years.
Analyz Gmz I'm on board with you !!!!! XO
This is sweet to see today of all days. We lost our nine year old German Shepherd/Labrador mix. He lived a good life! Now our ten year old Australian Shepherd is lonely!
Analyz Gmz are you an angel who saves angels
Ceasar Milan will forever be missed when he leaves this earth. Much respect for this man. Thank you ceasar 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That sounds morbid when he leaves this Earth why would you say that . He's not on his deathbed for crying out loud , he's not that old yet why would you even think that we all leave this earth one day

I'm glad to see you're back, Cesar! We've missed you!!
Right?! Same! I grew up watching him on TV! *MC
omg this recommendation came at the right time! i was planning to visit a shelter next week
So exciting! Have fun finding your newesr family member!
Great advice - the part about visiting with the dog outside the kennel was brilliant.
Definitely! Are you thinking about adopting a new furbaby? *MG
That bit about the dog in front for experienced owner, dog in back for inexperienced is brilliant. It would of never occurred to me, but makes perfect sense. It comes down to who will be the boss.
I love it because he explains what dog is best for what person and how every dog is adoptable.
Yes! I agree with you! That's very important! *MC
You have no idea, how much I’ve learned from you, over the years. Everything you’ve taught, I’ve remembered. My son had an aggressive dog, a large one at that. And every time I went over there. I ignored him. He’s an outdoor dog. Anyways, when I finally went out side with my son. I totally ignored him, and the next thing we knew. The dog was looking for attention from me. My son was blown away. Cause he’s bitten every one, who’s ever gone out there. But not me😁. Your lessons have taught me how to be around, different types of dogs. And I always, do well. So thank you for everything you have ever taught us 💕. You are, the dog god😄.
Ive watched your rescue videos and im loving the way you say “halo” to the dogs, so pure and gentle and im sure paws knew that youre just trying to make friend with them. 2:18
Cesar is the best! I'm getting old now and I want to adopt a rescue dog. Hope I will choose the right one for myself because it would break my heart if not, but mostly I fear it would break the dog's heart
It's always special when you and your furever best friend find each other!
Zappos.com thank You Zappos.com I'm thinking about adopting an older dog from the Shelter as I know people who take their dogs there because they 'just don't want them anymore' and I think that's a sad thing to happen.
Older dogs (older than 3 years) have a more stable temperament and are easier to work with, in my opinion. A lot of times, older dogs are also less active and have less energy, which is helpful for those who work a lot or who aren't very active themselves for whatever reason. The only real downside to older dogs is they may have more health problems, and obviously they don't live as long.
Hopefully you found a good dog fit for yourself, six months after leaving your comment.
I only adopt senior dogs. I love them till the end. My duration is short and heart breaking every single time. But I return to the shelter and always ask for the dog no one wants and has been there the longest. They are so depressed and defeated. Then as we are leaving a light goes on in their eyes. When we get home it's what ever they want. Bed, couch treats and of course endless love and hugs. Everyone should try it. Nothing more rewarding than to save a life.
Im so happy they got adopted together! Now they will be living together forever 5:52
Such an inspiring person. Cesar Millan
Lina _ he really is ♥️
I've wanted a dog my whole life and now that I'll finally be moving into my own apartment in a few months, I'll be able to get a dog. I'm so excited to go to my local shelter and rescue my very own good boy(or girl).
+JosayyLmao that's awesome! Congrats! Check out zappos.com/pets to see if our newest initiative, Friends on Us Fridays, is coming to your town! Maybe Zappos can even cover the cost of the adoption for you!
All my dogs came from animal shelters and are the best dogs ever. My last one a less then a week ago went to Heaven a black and white Border Collie great I cry and miss him so much, he was my big companion, we walked 4,5 miles daily, I put him flowers on his back and people adored him. He haul instead of barking. He lived 15 years at the end he got arthiritis on hip and legs and couldn't walk anymore. I am in pain lossing him.
When I was 11 and adopted my first rescue from the shelter, she was loud, in charge, and at the front barking. I was so excited and thought she'd be the best to play with (my kid mind thought so haha). We love and care for her dearly now, but looking back I probably should have adopted the dog in the back lol! I was inexperienced and my dog took charge for years until I learned 😂
Can we have a 4-5 hour show about Cesar Millan?!
I want to rescue dogs when I’m older like hope for paws, they are my role models ❤️🐶 5:41
I am so happy that they were adopted together. ♡ Godbless their new family. ♡ 3:19
I’m hoping to go to the shelter near me
I’ve never adopted, but I have never bought a dog either
But so far in my life, all of our dogs came to us
One dog kept coming over to my grandmas house and the owner just let her have her,
Another was found on the side of the rode , skin and bones, came home with my dad and lived a good life
Youngest one was found near our garage doors at 4 am on Halloween night, he’s the baby of the house
I really hope we can adopt a dog/ cat in our lives, all the little angels deserve a good home
Wow, your stories are amazing! Your sweet fur babies were destined to be apart of the family! *MG
Thanks Cesar Milan. Truly an Inspirational Icon. Love the energy too
That’s why he has a show because he knows !!!
I LOVE CESAR
Same here! I pretty much grew up watching the Dog Whisperer! *MC
Every dog is fit for our home when they are not discriminating us so it our rightful duty to do the same!
I'm watching this because as soon as I get my own place and enough money I plan on going to a shelter and adopting a dog (preferably a pit bull).
Aw, that's an awesome goal! That dog is going to be so happy! *MC
Can you coach me, you have a great voice, look, attitude! I could listen to you spill wisdom any day.
i used to wanted a husky because its my dream dog, that is until i follow Cesar's step and focus on the energy instead of the breed, i ended up bringing home a pit bull and a pom that day ~
All are awesome breeds! We are happy you found some cute pups and gave them a furever home! *MG
So much wisdom in a short amount of time
i would love to adopt a pet.
I have always had the best dogs. I let the dog choose me and it’s always been a win.

Last year in maybe around September or october. Me and my family were leaving a parking lot. We were then turning left the we saw a little white matted dog with long hair running on the side walk. So we made our dad stop the car, then me, my mom, and my brother went out and followed it. We assumed he was very smart cuz he wouldn’t cross the street or anything. So we kept following him. At one point he stoped and barked at us, then he went on his way again. But then he went into a neighborhood. He went to a front of a house that surprisingly had the same breed as him. So then they started barking at each other, then the owner lady came out. We asked if it was her dog, then she said no. We were then able to corner him in some plants, then my mom picked him up. We then walked all the way back to the car. We took him home then we still had a little cage thing that we had for our little bald chihuahua, but it sadly past away about 6 years ago I’m guessing. We then put him in the little area then we washed him. We went to the store to get him stuff. We were at the store then my dad texts me saying that he jumped out of the area and went next to his bed. I told my mom and we just started laughing and told my dad to put him back in and stay with him. We got home and I took a bath. Then I come out with a towel in my hair then he just starts barking at me. So I get scared then my moms says he doesn’t recognize me. Then a week has past by and my mom has already gotten him groomed and saw if he had a microchip. He didn’t. So my mom posted on Facebook a before and after photo of him on a certain page. Then my moms friend started sharing it. I told my mom I wanted to keep him. She said she’ll give it a week and if nobody claims him we’ll keep him. So I got excited. But then I told her what happens if they fake it. Then she said she wants photo proof and their name to see if they respond back. So another week went by and we named him Rocket. And now as I type this.... he is now sleeping next to my bed right now. He is truly a special dog. He is our protector, and family member. Although, it’s hard for him to make new dog friends. I have a German Shepard named Sherlock. They kinda get along if that’s a word... He isn’t really a guard dog because he has ADHD and because he it so sweet! Rocket acts like a cat almost! He lays on his back, feet laid out, and more! Who would’ve known there was a dog like him! 5:14

Really good explanation! Thanks for helping so many dog's!!!!!!!!! You are the Best! Greetings from Germany
This was brilliant, I wish it was longer!
Good work CM. I have dogs because of you!
This is invaluable advice. Thank you Caesar.
That’s what I’ve always wanted! A dog with “ a good frame of mind” 😤
I cant go to a shelter just yet, i know i would leave with a dog and im not ready for that yet... but i mean just look at them!
Thank you Cesar 💕
The dog I adopted would come to the front of the kennel but would go to the back whenever I came to the kennel. Then when I would go to see the other dogs, he would come back to the door and look at me with sad eyes as if to say, "why did you go?". He has been apart of my family now for almost a month. 🐶
Aw, that's so awesome to hear! *MC
Great advice. Simple and effective, love it.
Ceaser is a godsend for dogs!!
Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for the love! *MG
Love Cesars work. The MAN
400 in a shelter! My county has 3 adoption locations. All 3 combined have less than 30 dogs! There are dogs that are there for less than a day before they are adopted. There are long adoption lists where the shelters evaluate you and choose the best candidate before they will even let you meet the dog. It is not first come first serve around here. As a result, people are picking dogs based on their picture and pressure because their chance of getting selected again to meet another dog is so low.
I have been looking for a month and have not gotten a chance yet to meet a dog.
I adopted a dog, but now a year later I think he needs a sibling. I’m home during the week but i don’t get to play with him all day like he would like. I thought of taking him with me to a shelter to help me pick out a sibling. Has anyone tried this? Is this even recommended?
Going a dog shelter tommorow, thanks advice. 😀
Aw, yay! I hope you found a new furry family member! *MC
Oh wow. Thank you!! I learned a loott
Now that they're cooked from the inside, when we eat them? 4:36
I have contacted many rescue shelters but they all want hundreds of dollars to allow the adoption and then they choose if you get the dog or not. It’s very odd. So I went elsewhere to rescue. This video breaks my heart that so many of them need homes yet many good hearted, willing and experienced dog-people are discouraged from helping or flat turned away. Sad. Very sad.
Sir I need help with adopting an adult female small apartment dog
Good Work Mr. Millan 😘👌
In my place there is no such thing called dog shelter.. If here is I will rescue one.. I got a labrador.. Now I want to rescue a puppy from street
Sadly I do have to look at the breed.. I can’t get a dog bigger than 20 or 15 pounds sadly ):
What's the price of adopting puppy or dog from shelter? 🤔🤔
With petorder_07 on Instagram, I got my pets so easy and fast to
They are legit in business ✔️
Okay, I'll take whatever dog but the dog has to like cats cause well I have a cat and I'm not giving him away 🥺💞
Are there no staff members helping you to find the right dog?
In Germany, you have a conversation with an employee first. You get to know the dog. You have to come several times and take it for a walk to check out if you like each other. And of cause: no dog is killed.
Edna : that’s wonderful!!
Very informative, thanks!
+Sami Motaghedi welcome! Thanks for watching
I love this video
I keep on bringing my crow to shelters but she escapes and comes after me like a maniac. I need a shelter good enough to keep a crow contained for at least half a day so i can focus on my life. Shes exhausting really, she answers to "alegria"
0:21 ??? : "마, 그라입시더" 2:59
Rescue the one in the back or in the front? That isn't very easy. I've been a volunteer in an animal shelter for over a year, training dogs I chose with my intuition. There are dogs which are fearful or even aggressive but turn out to be great companions when given time.
For example, Genevieve (imagine a short, chubby floppy-eared dog with Auvergne Pointer-like fur pattern), 15 years old, 5y in the shelter, withdrawn, sees with just one eye, but after me visiting her for a month or two, she started to show hear real character - playful, happy, submissive, even energetic. And her kennel companion, Kid, 11 years old, about whom I was told a year ago that he bites... after having groomed him the first time I saw him.
And Vampire (imagine a very tall brown and black Chihuahua with a naturally-shaped head with proportional eyes and smaller ears) - the most biting dog in the shelter that wouldn't let anyone touch him FOR 14 YEARS, but I gave him a chance and after a few months of training with treats he became a playful and happy dog that likes being pet and lets me change his collar and so on. And he playfully barks when he sees me. I bet that after some more time he would let me pick him up. He used to bite everyone, all the time. He's 15 years old but likes jumping and running.
And Cheers (just a multi-colored mongrel, my favourite "breed"), 6 years old, 1y in the shelter, withdrawn and doesn't want to get out but when he does, he's very happy and affectionate. I don't know him personally as he lives in another city but I intuitively feel we would get along perfectly. A friend of mine says he looks just like me.
So... how to choose a dog at least of these 3? I'd choose Cheers if it wasn't for the fact that Genie and Vampy are 15 years old and haven't been given a chance. What to do?
Interesting. Shared.
Poor pups. I wish I could take them all 😩
You and me both! I have big dreams to live on a farm and own like 100 dogs! *MC
I miss my shelter dogs.

Right?! They are so cute! *MG
I have never adopted a dog I tried going to a shelter to adopt but I ended up going to s house with a dog that people didn’t want anymore.
I want my future home to become a dog hospice.
This video should be played in all animal shelters as a way to help educate the public to make the best possible home and family placement. Too many animals are returned to shelters because of uneducated adoptions. Thanks again Cesar!
What a great idea!!
Thanks! I'm going to suggest it to my local shelter. So many families adopt from there, and I really believe it will help them to understand the process better.
Glass Half Full GREAT IDEA!
nearly every dog in a shelter is abandoned there by an ignorant owner. be realistic... 'too many' is your value judgement and you don't get to set the limits. Nearly NO OWNER takes his dog through 1 complete basic class, so that is the reason dogs are abandoned: frustrated ignorant humans. Dogs have nothing to do with any choice.
Glass Half Full I know I hate when people take there dogs or cats back 2 the shelters my dad got me a Chiweenie the people the had him before me took him back cus of his overbite the vet told them hi need surgery so they took him back to the ASPCA he’s ok he’s eating and drinking water fine and let the dog pick u out don’t pick the dog
“Stereotyping is the worst that you can do, in the shelter or street.” Wise words!
When I’m older I want to ask for the dog who has been here the longest and adopt that one
That's very sweet of you, Maya! I hope you get the perfect dog one day! *MC
As sweet as it sounds and I see where you're coming from but hear me out dogs are in the shelter because people got the wrong dog for them in the first place so somone who just goes and gets a shelter dog because they feel bad for them and then it doesn't work out you just hurt the dog and when you put them back in the shelter you just put that dog in the shelter and put another dog on the line to be put down and the dog you rescued is harder to get adopted with every time they are returned so you will do the dogs better if you choose the right dog over the 1 you feel bad for and the right dog might not be a shelter dog it might be a stray or one somone has to give up but they know wouldn't last in a shelter or even a breeder (responsible reputable breeder) so when you do get your dog just kept in mind that the dog getting the right home is better off than than just getting a home
U can do it now, no need to wait till you old dear...
@@beautifulsoul7317 not when parents don't allow it haha

+Kristina Lopez so amazing!! So excited for you to f in and the perfect best friend for you and your fur baby!!
Some of the best advice ever for adopting dogs, all delivered in less than two minutes. Crazy good knowledge on display here. The part about dogs having issues inside the kennel but not outside is very true. When you adopt a dog, what you see in the shelter is not always exactly how that dog is. A dog may seem very quiet in the shelter, but that's just because they're scared, unsure, exhausted or in pain (surgery etc). When you get them home, their personality will really blossom.
I wouldn't worry too much about barking either in the kennel. The shelter is full of all kinds of exciting smells and loud noises. A lot of dogs bark when they hear other dogs barking and a lot of dogs in shelters bark for many reasons. Which causes a chain reaction of barking. When you get them home, you will probably find they won't bark as much or will only bark at certain things, like garbage trucks or package deliveries. And those quiet dogs you see at the shelter will probably bark too once you get them comfortable and they are able to show their personality.
I adopted 2 Australian shepherds today! In love already ❤️
Sonya congratulations!!!! 😍😍😍
We had one of them sheperds he turned out a natural herding dog . my dad electrition but baght some land tryed out that gentelman farmer hoby sorta thing when an animal got out of it fenched in pen that dog brings them back. No training . just know

I'm getting a German shepherd and either a boxer or pit bull from the shelter on Thursday 😉
+Samantha Kingheart so exciting!! Congrats on your additions to the family!
Samantha Kingheart I have a German shepherd and a boxer. I recommend German shepherd. There are a lot more in shelters, they are easier to train, less behavior and physical problems.
Ming Song how much do they typically cast in the shelter?
Both of ours are shelter dogs and they are amazing!

ive got a massive yard and i am looking for an energetic dog. after a lot of thinking and a dissapointing situation where a dog wasnt being given to us anymore, we most likely going to adopt a kelpie mix puppy from the no kill shelter i go to. hes black and has a crescent on his chest so im probably naming him mars.
Best of luck and tell Mars we say hi! *DO

"Most people don't end up rescuing a dog because they want all of then" so true, and just shows how much love love people have for dogs. If I ever won the lottery, I would donate a large amount of money to these places to help them with getting more supplies for the dogs, and help them promote their agency to help them put these dogs in happy and healthy homes:)
Aw, that's so kind of you to say! Every time I go to the shelter I feel the need to rescue all the dogs! :'( *MC
Zappos.com Thank you :) I've always loved dogs more but never owned one (lived in an apartment most of my life) and when I hear these dogs who been abused and abandoned (note about those 'dog owners') they should never be allowed to adopt or foster a dog or any pet again. As for original comment, I also wanted to point out that as I would donate a large amount of money to various animal adoption centers (for helping staff get proper medical care and whatnot) I would adopt a dog or two myself (or just one). Inday that becuae I'm a bit of a careless twat, and I would feel awful not being able to care for more then 2 dogs xD
Awwww yes I want all of em,i just cant choose.i want all but I can't have all so I end up donating... I ve went to 2 dog rescue centers but I ended up donating.......... I want a dog soo bad......
Yeah but it's not really the same comparison with race and dog breeds since dog breeds have different temperaments and characteristics. For example, if you're really lazy and live in a small apartment you probably shouldn't get a dog like a border collie which has a lot of energy and needs space. Dogs that need space can become destructive and territorial if left alone in small apartments. One of the reasons people give away their dogs is because the dog doesn't act they way they wanted or doesn't match their lifestyle. Also checking the breed can help determine which training methods and environment is best.
Cesar has also stated many times how important it is to focus on the "energy level" of the dog; meaning there are high, medium, and low energy dogs and thus, you select the one to match yours. But you can't fit everything into a 2 minute video.
He is right in many ways... a dog is an ANIMAL... not a person to talk to... or baby ... or fuss over. A dog needs structure, boundaries, and limitations (as top rehabber Jeff Gellman stresses). And taking 3 of mine thru CGC certification and handling many dozens for rescue in shelters helped me understand that.
Pups are the best ❤️
@@zappos .... pups are NOT 'the best' . An adopter of a shelter dog generally will not take a complete basic obedience class with the dog, let alone be able/willing to manage a puppy's needs.
I love how Cesar doesn't care that it's a pit bull and just cares that it's rescued.
