Hi the type of stretcher bar your painting was attached to is called a splined back stretcher. When people talk about “gallery” and “regular” stretched all that means is the stretcher depth. Typically a gallery stretched canvas has a depth ( meaning the distance from the wall to the front of the painting) of one and half inches up to three inches in depth, when a regular or standard canvas is one inch deep. A gallery style canvas was created to give the look of a framed canvas without a frame since a regular stretched canvas is pulled away from the wall more when framed. I hoped this helped.
Thank you Betty! That's called a spline wrapped canvas - I have to unstretch a couple of them and was afraid to do so, so this is very helpful. Maybe also worth mentioning that oil paintings should be rolled so the painted side is on the exterior of the roll rather than compressed on the inside, if that makes sense. Apparently it's worse for the paint to be compressed than to be stretched! thanks again!
Thank you, I just got a canvas I want to stretch and paint, but I was perplexed by the type of canvas I got because I’d never seen a spline wrapped one before. I’m lucky I found this video because I had no idea what they’re called! Now I can search for more info. :)
Your video has been so helpful. I've got a couple of gallery wrapped canvases which would be heavy to post so I've avoided using them due to the expense. But now I know I can remove them safely I feel happier to use them. I've been worried that it would not be acceptable or professional to remove a canvas from it's stretcher bars, although I have never seen a problem with it. I have done it once myself. I usually sell my art in the stretcher frame. I've bought lots of canvas board to make life easier. Your video has made me feel safe in the knowledge that a professional would do it this way. Posting in a tube is cheaper too. Especially as I have a couple of larger canvases which means I could sell, hopefully, and remove from stretcher frame. I'm in in the UK and most of my customers have been in the US. Many many thanks.
Great video. This is the first time I had to remove one of my paintings from gallery wrapped stretcher frame in order to ship it. This video was the perfect explanation on how to do that. Thank you , I will use this many times in the future.
Thanks for sharing your methods. Rather than making the end caps out of cardboard, I find plastic lids off of some type of jar I've emptied that's more or less the size of the carpet tube opening and then tape it up.
That is perfect! I was looking around my house hoping to find a plastic lid, but no luck! Glad you found some. Much easier than making the caps out of cardboard!
Thank you SOO much. I have a canvas I need to ship from Canada to Australia and it was going to cost me $50 to get the canvas off the stretcher bars. Now I know I can do it myself.
Glad it was helpful! It would be great to see someone put it back together using the same frame. Honestly, I think it would be easier to just do a staple back finish instead of trying to fit it back into the grooves. Thanks so much for watching!
The canvas is called a spindled canvas. It can come in the gallery wrap as well as the 7/8" wrap. I love to use these because of the clean more professional look. How difficult was it to use it to stretch a new canvas to it? If you can, I'd love to see a video of that. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing that information, Tara! These two were shipped to the UK and they were stretched by a framer. I have removed gallery wrap myself and restretched it. It worked out great. I didn't restretch it as a gallery wrap. I did a staple back. There was sufficient canvas to staple it all the way around. Thanks!
Thanks for this info, Betty. I have these types of canvases and wanted to take them off but didn't know how. I was wondering if you could do another video showing how to replace a new piece of canvas after taking the old one off. Keep up making your wonderful videos!

And if there would be any questions they could always do what were doing and get on the you tube for some instructions!
Hi Betty. Love your videos. I have a painting on these type of stretcher bars that has warped and I'm trying to figure out what to do. Any idea if they can go on regular stretcher bars or do they have to be the spline back type? I'm also wondering if there will be trouble re-stretching since the corners are cut. Any idea? Thanks!
Hi Susan, you shouldn't have a problem re-stretching the canvas if you're using the same size. It doesn't have to be gallery wrapped bars. The cut corners should line up on regular bars. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video - thank you for the info. I have a question about conveying size of the canvas when shipping to a country that's metric (against U.S. standard). Do you think it's effective to write the measurements on the back of the canvas so the gallery canvas stretcher doesn't have to figure it out? Or should they be able to eyeball where the paint ends and take measurements on their own? Also - if there's a gloss varnish well cured on the canvas, is it safe to roll up with a thin layer of wax paper rolled in as well? Thanks!
Good questions! I have shipped overseas and did not put the measurements on the backside. The framers are well versed on stretching canvas to the right (custom) size. I roll my art by putting wax paper down first and then placing the artwork face down on top of it and then rolling it up. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for your very informative video! I have an old, large painting I need to ship. I'm pretty sure the medium used was oil. Would the oil crack if the canvas was rolled?
Hi Michelle! Unfortunately, I have never worked with oils, so I don't know the best way to ship it or if it can be rolled. I hope you're able to find the answer somewhere. Congratulations on the sale!!
Hi Michelle, I think to prevent cracks, you would need to roll lightly...meaning a bigger tube in the middle or as a spine. Before putting it in your shipping tube(an even bigger tube😩. I hope this makes sense.

Hi Debbie, I didn't adjust the price because he choose to have it removed from the bars to reduce the cost for shipping it overseas. Thank you for watching!
Betty, great video! Did your canvas have staples down inside where the roping is? I had a hard time getting my canvas out where those staples were down in that groove. Any tips for that?
Thanks Betty, you made it look quite easy. I expect the challenge would be it you wanted to stretch another canvas on the stretcher bars. Have you ever done that?
Yes, my husband made six foot by six foot stretcher bars and we stretched our own canvas over them (2 of them!). It was challenging, but doable. After doing the super large ones, I'm thinking stretching canvas over these smaller ones will be a little easier! Thanks for watching, Catherine!
Can you do this with oil and acrylic paintings, even after an acrylic painting has been varnished? It seems to me like doing this could warp the paint, if not crack it.
I totally understand your concerns. Please keep in mind that acrylic paints are basically made of plastic. Once dry and varnished (again, with a plastic-like finish) they are very flexible. Even more so than not varnishing at all. I can't comment about oil paints because I've never used them. The customer reported having them re-stretched with perfection. He was super pleased with the outcome. Thanks for watching!
Hi Kris! No, it doesn't stick because I roll it towards the outside with glassine paper. I lay the glassine paper down and then my artwork is facing down on top of the glassine and then start rolling it. I hope that makes sense!
Yes, you can just do a staple back finish on the back side. I think it's too hard to try to get that plastic rope and canvas into the groove. I just staple the back side. Thanks for watching, Anthony!
Really valuable video you’ve made. Can you take the bars apart and ship as well to save mkre money for the client? I asked the framer yesterday in Vancouver about 36x48” bars and she thought they’d cost$100 cad at a framers, plus thecanvas.
That's a great question! I'm sure the bars can be pulled apart. I didn't give it a try, but will consider it if I need to do the same thing again in the future. Thank you!
I'm currently painting a piece and the wooden frame has warped. I'm concerned about the stability but already in the process of painting. I have never done this before but is it fine if I just finish the painting, let it dry, and then unmount it from the current warped stretcher to then transfer in a fresh stretcher.
It's frustrating to discover a frame is warped! Yes, it's perfectly ok to create the painting, let it dry, and then remove it from the stretchers and re-stretch it. Good luck to you!
Hi Betty- thank you for this video, so helpful! I get received a request from IG to purchase my painting from someone in UK. Anything I need to be on the look out for to ensure this is a true transaction? Do you have Terms of sale? Refund policy? How to accept payment? I appreciate any and all advise you can provide Thank you!!🌺🌺
Congratulations, Madeline! I would first see if they have a FB or IG account. Hopefully they don't have a super common name. Ask them how they heard about you. Most scammers will want to send you a check--or worse, a check for more than the amount and then they ask you to send them the difference. Once they say that, delete the message. If they say it's for an upcoming anniversary, it's most likely a scam. If I'm unsure, I copy and paste the wording into my google search and often it comes up as a scam alert. If they do send you a check for the right amount, I would wait a month or longer to make sure it really, really has cleared. I've heard horror stories. Wishing you all the best!!
@@BettyFranksArt I have requested PayPal for actual amount and also advised it would a few weeks before the painting is fully cured and ready to ship. I hope I am covering my bases
Yes, both were restretched in the UK. The corners weren't cut by me. That's the way it was cut for the stretcher bars. The corners neatly folder over and you don't see any (unnecessary) cuts. Thanks, Lauren!
@@BettyFranksArt It worked perfectly!! I stood staring at the back for awhile, couldn't even think of how to get it off!! Its all wrapped up in glassine paper and duct tape.. around a plastic pipe...ready to go,. just going on an airplane with someone.. cant thank you enough!!
@@BettyFranksArt okay thanks! The art prints I see in frames... Do artists use some type of paper or board to paint them or are those always printed copies of original art?
Thank you so much for this video! I make fluid art so have to use canvas but would like to have my paintings transferred in a normal frame. Once removed from the frame, can you simply cut out the white corners of the canvas and put it in a normal frame? Also, would you take the painting out before or after varnish? I'm not worried about the acrylic paint cracking but not sure for the varnish.
If you're just going to put the artwork in a normal frame without the stretcher bars, then I suppose you can cut it anywhere. I was being careful because the customer was going to restretch the canvas onto bars. I prefer to varnish before removing it from the bars. It's just easier to do. Thanks so much for watching!

Hi Robert! Thank you for inspiring me to create the video! I have that pic and can send it to you.

Happy to hear that you enjoyed it, Barb!
Thank you Betty!!
You're very welcome!
Thank you! Just what I needed

Is the front of the frame smooth or does it have those grooves as well?
Hi Makalia, the front of the frame is smooth. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this information how-to!!!!
You're welcome, Alexandra!
Thank you this was so helpful!!

Question. Does the acrylic paint stick together during shipping?
Hi Kris! No, it doesn't stick because I roll it towards the outside with glassine paper. I lay the glassine paper down and then my artwork is facing down on top of the glassine and then start rolling it. I hope that makes sense!
and then if i want to stretch it again would i put the canvas back over the frame and just staple over the white edges on the back?
Thank you!
Wow! Thanks to show the video. 👍
You're very welcome, Bani!
Thank you! You really saved me a lot of money! Wish I could donate
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching, Samuel!
@@BettyFranksArt thankyou so much...
Hi Betty- thank you for this video, so helpful! I get received a request from IG to purchase my painting from someone in UK. Anything I need to be on the look out for to ensure this is a true transaction? Do you have Terms of sale? Refund policy? How to accept payment? I appreciate any and all advise you can provide
Thank you!!🌺🌺
Congratulations, Madeline!
@@BettyFranksArt you are amazing as always! Thank you 🌺
@@BettyFranksArt I have requested PayPal for actual amount and also advised it would a few weeks before the painting is fully cured and ready to ship.
I hope I am covering my bases
Was this able to be put back onto stretcher bars? Even with the corners cut?
Yes, both were restretched in the UK. The corners weren't cut by me. That's the way it was cut for the stretcher bars. The corners neatly folder over and you don't see any (unnecessary) cuts. Thanks, Lauren!
@@BettyFranksArt Thank you so much, love your Instagram and UA-cam :)

Can you put the unwrapped canvas in a frame?
Yes, I'm sure you can! I would recommend using spacers (if you're not using matting) to keep the art from sticking to the glass.
Thank you for your reply! Your video is very helpful :)
can you do a video on how to remove the bar that is some canvases that goes through the back center because I want to get rid of that on the one I bought 😓
If there's a cross bar on your canvas, it's because it's needed for stability. I would not recommend removing it. Thanks for watching!
@@BettyFranksArt I'm not using the canvas for painting, I'm using it as a cheaper frame for punch needling and need to take it out without breaking the canvas and nothing on youtube tells me how to do that
@@PixelDicaprio Oh, I see! How about sawing it off? I'm not an expert at all. Wish I had a better answer for you!
@@BettyFranksArt oh, thank you anyway for trying
How about canvas is glued to streacher, how can removed from its stretcher.
Interesting...most canvases are not glued to the stretchers. I haven't experienced that, so I'm unable to provide comment. Thank you for watching!
Curious what happens on the other end with Robert gets the artwork? Does he frame it in another way or stretch it on his own frame?
Hi Amanda, the canvases are with a framer right now. He's going to have them stretched onto bars the same size as I had. Thank you for watching!
Great step by step video Betty if you need to put a canvas back on I use a spline tool and WJ Dennis spline or Saint Gobain adfors screen spline from Lowes its nice stuff and easy to use to get that canvas back on the stretcher bars, it takes a bit of getting use to doing it but I've done it for years now very successfully, I left you a link below if your interested on trying it, there is different sizes so look around I personally like the WD Dennis brand but its harder to find but Lowes has a lot of options, I Hope that this can be of some helped have a creative weekend dear . www.lowes.com/pd/Saint-Gobain-ADFORS-1-8-in-x-100-ft-Black-Vinyl-Screen-Spline/1000042225
This is great information! Any chance you can edit your comment so that there's a space between the two links? I can't get to the links right now because it's showing up as on link.
Here is the other: www.lowes.com/pd/Screen-Tight-Plastic-Screen-Rolling-Tool/3020136
Sorry Betty for the inconvenience it put the links together so I sent you two separate replies.
Oh, yes! I'm familiar with these products. We have re-screened our screens in the past and these are the tools we used. Thank you so much!
But isn't the paint going to crack when you roll it up?
Not at all. I use acrylic paints (basically, plastic). The paint bends with the canvas. Thanks for watching!
