Most New Zealanders have interacted with many people from other ethnicities, countries and even religions. We usually show a friendly acceptance and interest in others. This probably comes from respecting people as we were taught to do. But there are some rude, arrogant people here in New Zealand too. As a person who lived six years in Atlanta, GA and travelled around various states I was always shown respect and acceptance by the American people I came in contact with. It makes me sad to hear you don't get the same respect and acceptance from your own country. And it seems that it is still related to a distrust based on skin colour. That is so outdated around the world so why does it still exist in USA? I wish you could experience the welcoming acceptance that I as a white lady from New Zealand was shown in USA. Please come to New Zealand, if possible I will personally welcome you. 😁🤗🇳🇿

One of New Zealands top basketball coaches is an African American man 🇺🇲🇳🇿 originally from Michigan but moved to Wellington in 1982 & played for the wellington saints. Also coached Steven Adams to the NBA. RIP Kenny McFadden
When Kenny first came to Wellington he turned up at a stadium for a practice session. I was just a kid playing in that old stadium at the time, it looked like something out of Hoosier’s the movie lol. I’m sure he must have been wondering what the hell he had gotten himself into. He was amazing, such a great ambassador for the game, a really nice guy.
Yep I didn’t know him but he worked at that sports place in Lower Hutt. He was such a cool guy. Real chill. His passing was a great loss to the community.
I moved here from the U.S 18 years ago and it was the BEST move I have ever made. This country is beautiful in all aspects, but most of all it's the people who have made me feel welcomed and still do. I haven't lost my American accent, and get asked all the time where I'm from. And, honestly, I might have only gotten a handful of people, rolling their eyes. But, you know what, that will happen anywhere. I don't focus on them. I love the Maori people and culture, they are sooo friendly. I LOVE meeting other American's who have moved here, it's really cool. I've been back to the states a few times and hand on my heart, I have said at the end of all my trips: I can't wait to get back home (NZ).😍 Oh and the men, mmm mm mm don't get me started on them.😁🤎💜💙💚💛🧡❤
You will still get looked at for being black and tall in nz but i guarantee it will not be in disgust. It will be out of wonder. I have met so many people from around the world that just don't get why we are so welcoming. Dont be surprised if you have people offering you a place to stay. Its just how we are. For me its the joy of getting to know people. There will aways be rotten eggs but that is nothing for you to worry about people will step in and help you out. My best tip is to connect with your subscribers from nz. We got your back 100. You out here showing us that love makes us feel proud. We invested in this journey too. Man i cant wait to see your vids of your trip. If you need a camera man i do it for free. It isnt expensive if you let us locals guide you. Those travel agent businesses will fleece you. Jus holla at us you will also have an even better experience. Trust
This reply was spot on. The locals will show you the real nz. Watch how big your heart and head will feel when you get to walk on to a marae while being explained every little detail of whats happening..... the maori people alone are the strongest indigenous people I know...they fought for their seat at the table and will continue to fight while still making you a boil up and laughing at the randomness of things haha
You won't meet bag eggs bro, New Zealand isn't big nor small. But we all community you know. We all know our Maori land is and will forever be a place of spirituality, culture, and built from that comes respect. For your elders. For your neighbour's (for the most part). For the necessities that have been passed down for generations. A great place to live. We do have troubled youth and a bad rep for alcohol influenced casualties. But Nz is working on it. We gonna pull through like we do. We live with the morals that we would expect other to treat us. A simple life is a happy one.
I'm maaori on the darke side of the skin tone.... when I was in the USA for work a few years ago... bruh!... the eyes I felt on me everywhere was fuckin unreal... Like I for sure catch racism here in NZ for being indigenous... but the type of racism feels different... the racism I felt in the USA felt like an ANGRY racism, like a racism that could snap at any moment...which was a new sensation for me.
One of my mates went to the states with some friends. At a restaurant he was spoken to in Spanish because they thought he was Mexican. He's a māori from the east cost. He laughed about that, but not about a hotel he was trying to book rooms in. They told him there were no rooms available, his friend went in and asked and suddenly there were rooms.
I from Colombian i been living in New Zealand for 8 years i love here my wife she from here. i for in love wth Aotearoa the first month we arrive here now we have 4 kids crowing. up here .this is the best country to raise kids no question about that ✌️💚✌️
My workplace in Auckland is like the United Nations. We have people from Canada, France, Zimbabwe, USA, Philippines, China, Korea, Russia, South Africa, Ireland, Britain, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Iran and some I know I am forgetting. We have a lot of fun learning about our differences and making fun of each other's cultures. And exchanging recipes. All about the food. lol.
It aint the same here in Napier in my workplace. Pakehas stick to themselves, Indians stck to themselves and Maoris and Islanders. And when anyone says hello to another race you know its fake
@@kazamk5367 My comment was not directed to you, so I am not sure why you butted in. I have lived in New Zealand for many year's and I saw no story about All Zimbabwean people being extradited. 🤣🤣🤣
This is a tricky topic. NZ definitely does have racism and negative sides to our culture. People can be nice to your face but treat you poorly behind your back plus there's a lot of jealousy and hate towards people who carry themselves with confidence or success. I moved back after 5 years away and I've met so many fake people who act nice to your face but secretly they don't like you. It's honestly depressing. Overall though it is a safe place to live. Sadly with the economy it is getting worse with the gangs and meth but it's still a very safe country. The Black Americans that I have met here usually appreciate something that I'll try to explain. You're seen as an outsider yes but it's mainly because you're American, not because you're Black. You'll be a foreigner but we don't have the same history of segregation, slavery, all that evil stuff so you'll be free of that baggage to a certain extent. Some Maori and Pacific island people feel a strong affinity to Black culture because our history of colonialism and racial oppression has some parallels to Black culture and the history of enslavement. So with those communities you might even be seen as almost a celebrity just for being who you are. With other races in NZ it's more hit and miss. Sometimes white people can be very racist especially in small towns and honestly no one likes to admit it but there's a lot of racism going both ways between Maori and Asian/Indian people. But the point I'm trying to make is, for a Black American person it can be a good place because we don't have the same historical baggage. But don't assume NZ is a utopia without any racism because we do have a lot of racism. (Sorry for writing such a long comment this is just something I spend a lot of time thinking about. I'm a light skin Maori guy and I spent 5 years living in Australia, USA and Europe where I was treated as a foreigner but considered to be white/accepted by the majority. Then I came home and remembered what it's like to be seen as part of a different race and a minority.)
"People can be nice to your face but treat you poorly behind your back plus there's a lot of jealousy and hate towards people who carry themselves with confidence or success." It sounds like you've had a bad run in with the ol' Tall Poppy Syndrome. Yes, it can be brutal at times and lead to a lot of nastiness, but at the same time, is it really that hard to be humble? Culturally, New Zealanders despise people who talk themselves up and show off their success, so the simplest solution is to just be humble and not act like you're better than anyone else just because you have money or a prestigious career or whatever. It's not even hard to do because New Zealanders tend to avoid asking questions that provoke self-agrandising answers. Australians are exactly the same, but they're even more aggressive about how they respond to anyone flaunting their success. On the other hand, New Zealanders also value cordiality and harmony, so while you might see people as being fake, they're merely trying to keep treating you well despite hating you for whatever reason, most likely because you act in a way that comes off as superior. New Zealanders hate confrontation as much as they hate arrogance, so no matter how much they have an issue with someone, they will typically go to great lengths to avoid bringing it up in order to "keep the peace", especially if it's minor. You're entitled to see this as a bad thing if you like, but honestly it's a matter of perspective and it seems like yours has shifted radically in the time that you've been away such that perhaps New Zealand isn't the best fit for you anymore.
I’m from NZ and I watch this guys tiktoks. It’s cool. He’s married to a Samoan women and stays in the South Island. But this guy is definitely a very cool person. Hope you get to come to NZ and experience everything he has, since he has been here 💯
It's sad that he stated that when someone is nice he don't feel like it's real, I guess that's why I,m not received and go into a shell around people because I can feel it.
I’m born and raised in New Zealand and I’ve been to Hawaii so I can’t speak on the USA as a whole but in my time in Hawaii only the natives/a hand full of people actually welcomed me and wanted to have a conversation with me
I had the same warm welcome in Hawaii...I was invited into a local's home for a meal. It was awesome. 100% full blooded kiwi 🥰 surfing the waves was a fantastic experience there as well...just had to be careful of the coral reefs.
A 6'5" black man is almost certainly going to get the occasional stare here in NZ, but mostly it'll just be interest and intrigue because you stand out, rather than because of any racist assumptions.
My Māori family are tall with the average height in my Iwi at 6'5". We're unfazed by height, size, color, ethnicity, and/or cultural differences. It is what it is. Having said that - NZers can be arseholes but for different reasons other than colour, race, and/or status. There's intrigue and curiosity with foreigners - we're an isolated country so we're genuinely interested. There's racism here, for sure, but it's cowardly, spoken around you rather than to you. You'll be welcomed here. Nau mai, haere mai.

Love this. It’s nice for you to hear from a fellow American who’s walked a similar path other than kiwiamericans. I only had 1 African American friend back in the 90’s-00’s and he was a very tall basketball player for us and was a legend to us teens. My other American friends are all white. I truly believe though u will experience a totally different type of freedom here and a level of safety u have never experienced. Not saying we have no assholes here, they are just more passive aggressive and won’t own guns. I look forward to u coming here and u should definitely connect with that guy as by then he will have the kiwi spirit of wanting to meet up for a coffee/drink whatever just to help u out with tips and pointers as well as just catching up with someone from home.

When I lived in NZ, I was proud of my country. Any foreign person that I had met, I wanted to share my culture with them. I’m Maori. I also wanted to learn more about their culture, even living in Australia I want to experience other cultures and share mine.
Dude, your a Maori, your lot are smiling brick shithouses. Probably helps with general civility. Assuming people get the jokes you tell you should be popular by default.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “treat people how you want to be treated” we try to do that as most of us New Zealanders grew up being disciplined if we done or said something bad. We grew up learning to respect others and especially elders.
That's so cool you have been treated with respect and love in Aotearoa New Zealand your find to that most of us kiwi's have a good sense of humor as well we love to have a good laugh we are also proud of our culture.. Much Aroha (Love) to you and your whanau (family) ❤️☺️
if they're staring at that dude in New Zealand it's not cos he is black it's cause of those wild funky ass dreds!!! Even watching this video I can't stop staring at them, they're hypnotic 😃
When he talked about airports in the USA... I flew into Dallas to get a connecting flight to Orlando, and I felt so on edge there, the looks I was getting from security...like wtf!?!?! I was glad to get the hell out of that airport.
Watching alotta your vids, you sound well versed af about what goes on around the world other than america. The way you articulate and explain things is real deep and i soo understand it all lol. I cant wait till i see your vids in afew years time and youre happy and excelling somewhere abroad, hopefully NZ lol.
I've seen that New Zealand hospitality firsthand. When we stopped in Rotorua as part of a cruise in January, I saw a Māori community leader refer to an African from Zambia as "one of us" because he was married to a Māori woman.
It would feel weird for me to not be welcoming to people who come here, I love when people join our spaces respectfully... I want them to be comfortable and welcomed. Kia Ora 🙌
I’m always kinda shocked and at the same time proud seeing vids like that. Honestly. I grew up in places where you have to watch your step and you could get caught up in affiliations or just people on bullshit. Now I’m older I get a lot of it stems from hurt. I’m just saying NZ and Aus have their flawed people too. Life is up to luck, I believe.
Black culture was extremely influential to Polynesians in the 90s, (we all had that kid at school who idolised Michael Jackson/Jordan) yet many probably haven't knowingly met an African American in NZ in real life. So you'd be a novelty for sure (in a good sense of the word).
All foreign people are welcomed to NZ and we respect each other just like everyone else. There’s no separation between people and yeah you come across some opinionated person that’ll talk shit here and there. But all in general we’re pretty laid back 👍
Who the fuck is you speaking on behalf of bro stop telling lies we don’t welcome others we have a mad housing crisis and these rich foreigners are flooding our country
Hun just come to New Zealand for a holiday see for yourself, yes our country is beautiful and amazing same with the people. All countries have good and bad some more than others, but you are never going to know for yourself unless you spread your wings and take a chance, you only get to live once in this life time. Love from Aotearoa New Zealand 😊
I’m a kiwi and it’s straight facts bro, only thing that’s a negative about NZ is the wages and price of rental housing. If you ain’t got it then it’s gonna be hard to get ahead
@@t3chn1n35 You must be kidding me. I have been thinking of moving to Perth or Adelaide. Houses seem to be affordable there, like under 400k for a nice 3 bedroom that would cost 1.5 million here in Auckland. Maybe u r in Sydney or Melbourne?
Respect to this dude. I was listening to immortal technique talking about the airports here, and he said the same thing as this dude. It makes me want to go to a massive American airport just to experience the difference.
Thank you so much for this. We were lucky enough to be allowed to adopt two of our children from Russia. Because of racism there, our beautiful, perfect baby boy who has gypsy blood was made available to us, & made our dreams of becoming parents come true. I feel his birth mum's loss every day, & can't get over how this can happen in our presumably inclusive world. Instead of being threatened by our differences, we celebrate them & thirst for more knowledge & more inclusion. Here in NZ, we are fortunate enough to be able to work & socialise alongside people from everywhere. Anyone who dismisses our country needs to go & see almost every other country, then come back & take a good look around with new eyes. They'd be as protective of Godzone as I am
Yeah that first tik tok about how you guys find our culture and the differences because it's interesting for us. I have a few American friends living here... Oh and we getting used to some of the food ideas you all bring.... It's sooo cool, like I never knew about tri tip steak.....

So glad you've been made welcome. Love and light 💝🕊️💞 I'm sorry it's that hard over there. We have bad here. It's gotten worse. It's the indigenous who are treated bad. They pretend it's not so but it's fact. 🌹
Here in NZ we will address you as an American and not your colour. I’ve always found it strange how people in America say their Black, white or Latino. If someone addresses a person on their colour here that’s considered rude or racist. We do not choose our race so we shouldn’t punish someone for something out of their control .
Amen .It's in our Culture to Respect and make our guest Welcome....you can always get on a plane and come home.....MANA is Deeply imbeded in our Hearts.
If your interested and have some time and want to, look up the channel, IT'S A DRAMA, they are a British whanau and they mostly talk about Aotearoa NZ, even though you have done a lot of vidz to do with Aotearoa, this might or may help...Many Americans think that way because of what has been with you most of your life, which I call, The Great Wall, check out their vid, cause they do have vids that feature a couple from the USA, speaking on their mindset about their home country and comparing it to NZ life, as they have experienced 1st hand. Take care and be safe..
honestly love how you speak on anythingg yous such an intelligent person but mann it really is unbelievable what some go thru on a day to day basis. I would hate to live my life feeling unsafe or like somebody’s watching my every move but ye much loves from Aotearoa broo, stay solid & keep doing your thang💙
Hey Twano wassup 👍 always interesting hearing your feed back and I feel you. I’ve watched other American Utubers who also has said the same thing. Question why, what or must be a hidden agenda. For eg. an incident with the guy 8 year daughter, fell of the tramp and her head was bleeding and his first reaction was, she be okay… his mindset in health insurance was the cost. He eventually took her in on an ambulance, when advised by his friend it urgent. After all was done, he and his wife could only think about the Bill. He didn’t understand it was free for children under 14 and thought no this can’t be right. A year later he still finds it hard to get use to, changing one’s mindset must be hard to switch off. Vice versa we will have to change our mindset to survival mode. Being nice will be game over. At least if you are coming from the US to NZ adapting will be way easier than a Kiwi going to the US. It would be hard and too fast
Bro I like your channel & your insight on things as a young American especially how curious you are about New Zealand.. I've never been to America but as a NZ Maori I'd for sure welcome you if you came down these ways bro.. In my opinion it's the mutual exchange of cultures and stories between different peoples that help enhance humanity as a whole.. Nau mai haere mai bro ❤
All starts in the home. If your parents treat you and others with respect then you will do the same. You are a product of your environment. Say hello and smile. Sometimes a simple smile and hello can make a strangers day better. Tikanga Maori.

@kei-te-pai at all‼️
One of New Zealands top basketball coaches is an African American man 🇺🇲🇳🇿 originally from Michigan but moved to Wellington in 1982 & played for the wellington saints. Also coached Steven Adams to the NBA. RIP Kenny McFadden
He also coached us at wainuiomata college for a while too. In the 90s.
Kenny was the MANTIS...
I've been back to the states a few times and hand on my heart, I have said at the end of all my trips: I can't wait to get back home (NZ).😍 Oh and the men, mmm mm mm don't get me started on them.😁🤎💜💙💚💛🧡❤
Being a red blooded, woman charming chap from New Zealand (Aotearoa), i agree with all your comments.
Trust
Ivan Hughes too good ,. And yeah he ain't lying, we really wanna show you how we be.
Yeah bro we will show you the real Aotearoa. Don't waste money on travel guides. We are the navigators, we are the guides.
THIS!!
Its just down to respect and love. In the end we in NZ sometimes have beef with each other, but we also have each others backs 😊

I from Colombian i been living in New Zealand for 8 years i love here my wife she from here. i for in love wth Aotearoa the first month we arrive here now we have 4 kids crowing. up here .this is the best country to raise kids no question about that ✌️💚✌️
I think it's probably your hair style that gets the most stares😆 but I glad you feel welcome here in NZ.
I fucken love you bro, peace out. Thank you for uplifting NZ. Much love and Harmony my brother. It's about inclusive and acceptance from our ancestors
After everybody you listed you forgot your closest allies.. 🤨

@@petriusmaximus8187 You know, there is only the one Aussie in my area. LoL.But I did totally forget! Take it for granted there are Aussies here. LoL.
See no lies. 💯
🤣 must be in the wrong neighbourhood🤣🤣🤣
"People can be nice to your face but treat you poorly behind your back plus there's a lot of jealousy and hate towards people who carry themselves with confidence or success."
It sounds like you've had a bad run in with the ol' Tall Poppy Syndrome.
Oh my gosh, are you puplished that was quite the read?

I’m from NZ and I watch this guys tiktoks. It’s cool. He’s married to a Samoan women and stays in the South Island. But this guy is definitely a very cool person. Hope you get to come to NZ and experience everything he has, since he has been here 💯
I'm from NZ and this 100%
Damn he said "this is what being a human is like, not a black man". Thats deeeeep
I’ll much rather that than the disgust looks for sure
MsHGH....not really, most of us islanders are 6'4" - 6'8"...I'm 6'7" he would blend in.

I’m a kiwi and it’s straight facts bro, only thing that’s a negative about NZ is the wages and price of rental housing.
If you ain’t got it then it’s gonna be hard to get ahead
NZ good. Yeah housing is a wee out of control but apart from that, I have had my best 12 years of my life and my career in here.

“This is what being human feels like”
Wow what a line. Feel for my black brothers and sisters 👌🏽
yeah that was deep

Treat everyone how you yourself want to be treated.
Yeah that first tik tok about how you guys find our culture and the differences because it's interesting for us. I have a few American friends living here... Oh and we getting used to some of the food ideas you all bring.... It's sooo cool, like I never knew about tri tip steak.....

Here in NZ we will address you as an American and not your colour. I’ve always found it strange how people in America say their Black, white or Latino. If someone addresses a person on their colour here that’s considered rude or racist. We do not choose our race so we shouldn’t punish someone for something out of their control .
