2 months after watching... this has become one of my go-to's from half guard, thanks for sharing. Sneaking the far arm through for the grip change just works so well. Their momentum is positioned perfectly to drive them forward into a sweep or back take. Excellent ratio of trickery:strength in this move 👏🏻

Stephan, coming from a wrestling background, I question the point of all the use of gi grabs in controlling an opponent. Sure these work great, but do not seem realistic. Meaning they are great for an opponent in a gi but not as useful in real life fighting situations. Is is possible that the originators of the system only meant for them to be used as a teaching tool before advancing to fighting without them? Also, has the rise of sport JJ had a negative affect on the true nature of the art? Thank you!

That's a totally valid question (and one that has come up on my podcast many times). Firstly, I think that if your north star is self defense then in most self defense situations you're going to have clothes. Secondly, many of these sweeps can be adapted to no gi relatively evenly - if you look at Thomas's medal count you'll see that they're about 50/50 gi and no gi and it's not like he has a completely different game for each. And thirdly, to be a well rounded grappler it's important that you do a bit of both gi and no gi. If you trained with the gi for a month or two then you would learn how to adapt your wrestling to BJJ. Conversely if a gi specialist trains consistently no gi for a while then he'll make the adjustment too.
