My grandad used to sing Loch Lomond to us as kids . He used to say I’m an Englishman born and bread but no one creates music better than the Scottish ❤️. For me it’s the greatest song of all time because it reminds me of the legend that was my grandad 🙏From and Englishman to a Scotsman massive respect ! Scotland and it’s people are first class always welcoming 👌best places on earth 🇬🇧🏴
Hello to you all. I returned a few weeks ago from Uig where I visited a friend.I took the bus from Glasgow up the Highlands and returned via Inverness and Perth to Edinburgh. When I read all the comments from near and far I had to add my self to the list of foreigners whom has lost their hearth to Scotland. I AM FROM FINLAND but I have most of my life been drown to the "Dark Isleland" by Mary Duff makes me cry of longing to the beauty I have seen.
At least Finland is an independent country. You beat the Russian imperialists in the war at the start of WW2 but unfortunately many of my fellow Scots, who voted NO, prefer to live under English rule in a state called the UK. Shame on them.
There are two songs by Sir Harry Lauder that I grew up hearing in the late 50s. They are "I Love a Lassie" and "Roamin' in the Glomen". Dad had these songs and a library of others that were all 78's. A few years ago my father handed the book binder type record holder, 78's that is, over to me. I didn't have a turntable that can do 78 RPM, so I gave the complete set to my sister who has a working Victrola. It's fun to now and then "play some 78s" on her old Victrola. My father passed away a few years ago at age 96, and he was of a generation that is almost all gone now. Dad and his sisters grew up in the tiny village of Sandwick on the Isle of Lewis, speaking Gaelic in the home. Except for a little conversational English with friends, they did not learn to speak English until they started school.
It would be a good choice I was glad when the late George Donaldsom Sang this with e The Celtic Thunder they are bringing back older Songs and doing it well.
It was great to see so many great artists from Scotland at the all-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Derry 2013. However the vote goes in Sept 2014 I am sure there will be ever more enhanced relationships between Scotland and Ireland.
broke my heart at that result, but onwards, we will get there. people have to use their common sense. Who wants to be tied to the british government that we have now. they don't care a bit for SCOLAND, we are the ones who must vote for our children and their future. we ruled our own country for centuries
I'm certain there are many more that you could have squeezed into this list. These are wonderful and the photos make me want to hop on that plane heading northeast across the sea.
Would have included "Now Westlin' Winds" ahead of "Red Red Rose" and "Freedom Come A' Ye" instead of "Scotland the Brave". Would agree that "A Man's a Man" should also find a place somewhere, and maybe include Dick Gaughan singing "Scots Wha Hae" ahead of the slow version you included. Good list and interesting choices though.
+Susan Littlejohn A kind and thoughtful reply, from a stranger from across the miles and time. I am very curious, who may you be kind lady ? e.j.mcc65@gmail.com
+John Brown .... I have returned many times John and always there are changes with the exception of the people and their hospitality, yer never awa tae bide awa... yer heart never leaves.
These are all wonderful songs but my favorite, Ailein Duinn, was not included. It was a lament written for Alan Morrison by his fiancee Annie Campbell after his tragic death at sea just before their marriage was to take place. It has one of the most haunting melodies I've ever heard. I am American born, but with Scottish heritage on my mother's side and this song cries to the Highlander part of my soul.
Did I miss it? Was "A Man's a Man for a' o' That" not included? I think that should, of all these great songs, be #1 because it is not only a great Scottish song but is a song for the whole contributed by Scotland.
well, Ae Fond Kiss, Dougie Maclean and Caledonia are a pretty great start. Images are a wonderful accompaniment. I would also include Runrig and Andy Stewart/ Silly Wizard.
I know this video is old, but I simply have to thank you for those images of same sex couples being happy and in love. Representation can mean so much, and this has made my terrible day much better.
It's always time to remember...After Culloden ..one of my Clans .. The Grants... . The Grants including my ancestor Alexander Grant...they had seen seventy of the men of Glenrnoriston, who had been induced by a false promise of the Butcher Duke of Cumberland, at the intercession of the Laird of Grant, to march to Inverness and lay down their arms, ruthlessly seized and shipped to the colonies as slaves.. Slaves....The Kindness of the Crown. Quite a few of my ancestors were Scots and Scots Irish... I am American... from the Strength of many nations we draw our Force of Character.....
Great collection of songs, I'm just going to say that the "Scotland the Brave" version isn't the original one... The lyrics are the modern ones, however the original is fairly hard to find on youtube ...
@@parmindersingh885 Yes I expect we all have our reasons. I was young and simply got the wanderlust bug. I hope you're doing better wherever you landed.

Are you still tracking requests on here? Many years ago I heard an instrumental that the emcee said was "I See Molly." It was short, lyrical and haunting. I've searched for it and can't find it anywhere. Do you have any suggestions?
"as I was walking down the Copeland Road I saw a bunch of strangers and I said to them are you off to see 'The famous Glasgow Rangers? So I took them doon to Ibrox Park to see the flags unfurl and they said to me You have to be, the champions o' the world".
Does anyone know about the song Shinoa or shinoea or chinoa. However it is spelled supposedley the words are from a letter home from a scottish soldier to his mother talking about the mountain shiona or however you spell it. I heard it from Colin Grant-Adams but can't find a recording online.

stewart lawson Just because someone is gay, doesn't make them any less of a man .I really don't think he would care if people were gay or not, he sang about true love, so I don't think he would have cared *who* you loved, so much as how much you loved them. Especially if he totally understood being in love.
stewart lawson there was none of this political correctness nonsense in those days and he wouldn't have been pushed into giving his opinion but, like most normal people he probably thought it was a bit sick. Great collection of songs, I'm just going to say that the "Scotland the Brave" version isn't the original one... The lyrics are the modern ones, however the original is fairly hard to find on youtube ...
Really beautiful version of Auld lang... But nothing can beat Scotland the Brave!
I hate how for sports they make us cut out the middle verse of Flower of Scotland. Guess they don't want to be reminded of what they did to us? lol
This is lovely,hope you enjoy

Can't believe you didn't include Ca' the Yowes Especially Dougie Mcclean's version.

Folk-music ---its soooooooo DEEEEEEEPPPPP !!!
Aye, "Flower of Scotland" wins for me just now. Who knows what my favourite will be tomorrow?
Why oh why do we Scots ever leave home? For me it was a momentary impulse, now I've left it too late to return. Sigh!
Indians leave home because workers here gets payed very less

The joking song
flower of Scotland has more than two verses
O flower of Scotland
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again
The hills are bare now
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O'er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again
Those days are passed now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
That stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again
True. However at national matches (football, rugby etc) it seems like they only do the 1st and 3rd verse

I agree with you. After listening to the first two songs, I switched off. They were murdered.
