RPGMaster The past generations gave everything they had to give you what you currently have. Like the dude in the video said, when someone cares about and fights for you, you don’t do them like dirt. Nearly every generation before us has moved forward but the reason this generation gets so much shit is because it almost seems as if we’re moving backwards.
And the fact that a spoiled and disrespectful little prick like you has the nerve to blame it on every generation except your own is disgraceful. Shame on you.
And don’t get me wrong I’m young too (21) but I don’t disrespect the people who have fought and cared for me because unlike you I actually appreciate what I have and I will fight to give the next generation something even better.
Humble yourself before you talk about past generations.

Probably won't have an effect. The biggest issue in the black community is their culture of keep each other down. Someone is getting good grades and staying out of trouble? Call them out for being pussies and not being black enough then bully them until they break. What the speaker is doing is admirable but the black family needs to fix themselves - this speech is at best just a bandaid on the situation.

I agree. As a teacher, the only students who are not successful are the ones that don't try. If you put forth the effort, no matter your ability, you will find success. The problem is finding something you are passionate about to give that effort to. We all have to do things and go through things we don't want to. That's just part of life and the road to reaching our goals. At least put in the effort so that you can reach your passion.

Wow, I'm a teacher and a Masters student and E.T.'s speech has motivated me! I wish he could come speak at the school where I teach. I work at a trade school for young adults where we mainly get the high school drop-outs and low-scoring students. For the most part, I don't have straight up disrespectful students. Most of the students we get are so defeated by failure, by the time they get to us they don't even want to try in school. My biggest problem right now is keeping students awake in class. Therefore, sometimes I actually miss having students who are boisterous because I could at least engage with them at some level. However, both scenarios are frustrating because, as a teacher, you often feel like nothing you do is enough to get your students' attention and get them motivated.

Yeah well ET is a real leader, and it ain't rocket science. If they could clone a thousand of him we'd finally see some real change. This stuff is honestly critical in a way that matters, and is real. Compared to all that "race theory?" That rolls out yellow brick roads for an elite, and has nothing to do with the folks down at the bottom for whom all the "theory" in the world will never give them what a real education can.
That education ain't 'white.' Tell that to the two or three billion nonwhite people in the world busy getting educations right now. When education itself gets tagged as racist? That's a lie, meant to keep the people who believe that down there in their place. You gotta love your own precious mind and potential ability more than you hate what it is that is faked as holding you back.
And yeah. That takes a community.

If everyone would follow this man's advise, so many of America's current problems would be solved, or at least significantly improved. He's actually telling people what they can PERSONALLY do to make their lives better instead of telling everyone to just sit back and wait for everyone else to solve their problems for them. You can't help people unless they are willing to help themselves. He's telling people to start helping themselves. Bravo.

If his message was embraced, endorsed and upheld, let alone truly supported - from the top down (and I do mean the very top) and allowed to filter through every community and take hold, then it might succeed in defeating the conventional narrative (which all those kids absorb daily.) That "authentic" Black, African American is a thing that moves to its own drum beat, for which actual education is not necessary. Shit. I'm a white guy. I have no business discussing what authenticity is. That's for the community in question to decide.
But I dig the fact that most of these kids are as alienated from ET as they would be from me.
And that is more than just a shame. That is a tragedy. ET represents a thing missing in most of those kids' lives.
How much does that matter? I think it is the critical thing. That hole in their lives.

They know they don’t know, because they didn’t pay attention or do the work. So they just bubble in letters .. all A’s .. sometimes A, B, C, D repeating.
This is a class thing more than culture or race, but it is those as well. Even more so it’s a single parent thing. It disgusts me when media glorifies single parents. Can it be done? Sure. it’s not ideal and you need the balance and time two parents can provide.

I show them videos like this regularly to add weight to what we are discussing in life development and interpersonal skills. E.T. is one of the men who helped me to continue to be unafraid to give them the truth in spite of how they or the administration may feel about it. They need to know we care, that there is a way out, and that is it possible if they apply themselves 100% daily. Thank you, ET for continuing to be a beacon of light to us all.

I recently founded "Unshackled Community Ministries" in Kansas City, KS. Yes we are considered one of the poorest counties in the metro area, the area where people take more than give, I got tired so I said that I would do something. We go into Lansing State Penitentiary and teach class every Thursday night, we teach about making better decisions after release, about starting businesses, and most of all about the unconditional love of God and self. This video hit home because I actually ran into the same problem in the prison and had to "go in" on them. These are hardened criminals, some were in for murder, some for other violent crimes, but I prayed and asked God to give me the words to let them understand that they're in the place that they're in because of decisions that they made, the world has counted them out.
Truthfully, the reason why most are disrespectful (speaking from my experience as a troubled child), because they're insecure, they don't know how to love themselves and therefore find comfort in cracking jokes and disrespecting others to get a quick laugh. I have been an ET follower for a few years now and can relate to nearly every situation regarding the way he went through school and life, I lived for years like it didn't matter. I got married at 20 years old to my high school sweetheart and at 23, our first child was born 4 months early, he became my why.
All of my life I felt that I was a Christian though I know my life wasn't right, once my son was born, I developed a true relationship with Christ and began to live for him. Do I stumble, most definitely, but one thing thats for sure, I am no where near where I was in 2005 before my son was born. No one but God could've brought my son through his birth successfully and after being born at 1 lb 5oz, today at 12, he stands at 5'2", 110 lbs. He had a will to survive and God made it so. I say all of that to say, if a child can choose to succeed while fighting for his life the first few critical months, then why can't I get up everyday, set a goal, achieve that goal, set a higher goal and achieve that goal? Thank you Kenneth Alonzo Williams IV for being my "WHY."

ArRyona Strong Have you recently looked at the single motherhood statistic that has been rising in all groups because of the welfare but blacks are being hit the hardest.

You're an AMAZING SOUL, Eric Thomas, Sir. I will now educate myself on you and your messages... I am not black, but I love black people, as well as people of all races and cultural backgrounds. These young hearts are the youth of the future. I am watching what goes on in my daughter's school, and I'm worried for everyone. Disrespect (not just black kids doing it!) is at an epidemic level. So few do what they're asked to do, anymore... So few children are taught respect without abuse. (respect through fear) I don't know how we can get through to them. I think you might know... or at least, you are making a huge effort, to TRY which is what we need. May you be blessed on your path and feel the love continue to flow through you, to reach the people to whom you speak. Bless, Love.

It's sad to realize that most of the students will only hear this motivation and then get motivated for the current day and then fall to realization about how hard it will be and how they can't and eventually go back to the life they were living before.

This ET video touched my heart like any video before. As a successful black man, I know and FEEL exactly what he saying. I get the same questions about our children and school system and I am embarrassed. Rise up!

this man needs to be put on the Pay role of a Major public city school inner city that is to spread this type of message on a daily basis. I don't know where he is from but I remember growing up in the 90's and when we where done with the pledge of Allegiance, the teacher would turn on the MTV News in first period and watch that for about 15 minutes, so if we can do that then they can have a National motivational speaker come on such as him and speak to the teens about making the right choices.
