  • When we found out that Dave Erasmus and Louis Cole (Fun For Louis) were coming to Brazil during their one month round the world trip for The Solvey Project, we were stoked! Not only were we super keen to meet other likeminded people who want to make a difference in the world, we were excited to meet two inspiring people we'd been following on UA-cam for quite some time. In fact, it was Louis' Rio de Janeiro vlogs from a couple of years ago that inspired Dan and I to spend 6 weeks exploring the state of Rio de Janeiro when I first arrived in Brazil.
So on the day of the Solvey conversation we visited a school being occupied by it's students and we rode on the back of moto-taxi's to the top of Vidigal favela. It was so much fun. Follow the adventure!

So great to get such an in-depth tour of the school and learn about their struggles, thanks for sharing. The taxi ride looked a little hairy but I guess the best way to get up that steep hill if you are feeling brave.

It was a very interesting experience and really opened our eyes! Yes, the taxi ride was a bit sketchy but so much fun. Thanks for commenting!

Wow, that's so amazing that the students are occupying the school like that! More power to them! And this looked like a really full on but fun day.

Wow you did have a big day. Covered a lot. Great that you did the touristy stuff but also help to spread awareness about the school too.

Nice glimpse of Rio. I did much of the touristy stuff while there with family for Carnival but would love to take a motorbike trip up for views next time. Stay cool.

Yeah, Rio is one of those cities where you really do have to do the touristy things too because they are amazing! Thanks for commenting. :)

Good on the kids at that school for taking a stand against the government and standing up for their right and wish to be educated. Really impressive determination.

It's amazing... I didn't show it in the video but just that morning they had to have a big clean up because loads of bricks were thrown over the wall in protest of the kids occupying the school. Very strange situation but I take my hat off to the kids for having that kind of initiative.

Wow! I was in vidigal as well. I stayed at the favela for 2 days at experience Vidigal hostel. Little did I know how steep it was and I had a lot of luggage lol it was hard getting a taxi to go up there! Good times

I also rode the motor taxis and first time I got jipped! Haha after someone told me how much it is I didn't get jipped again. They knew I wasn't from there,

Oh yes, they always know when to take advantage of us tourists haha. We didn't actually spend too long in Vidigal as we were on a strict time limit, however, it definitely seemed like a vibrant favela with lots going on. Also, as we visited Vidigal 2 days after we were held up at gunpoint by a gang whilst accidentally driving through another favela, I was on edge. I understand that Vidigal is open to tourism, is under the control of the Pacifying Police Unit and is one of the most visited favelas in Rio de Janeiro but underneath it all, these places are still truly run by drug gangs (and I never want to come across one again, eek!). Where else did you stay in Brazil?

+StoryV Travel & Lifestyle haha yeah they def took advantage of me because I asked how much the first time. Lol I should have asked a local how much they charge first. But it's okay. They are super fun to take! Vidigal was cool. It felt pretty safe although you're right you can never be too safe. I walked up and down alone during the day and I felt fine. There were many tourists staying at the hostel. I stayed on copacabana mostly at 2 airbnbs, and then at Che lagarto hostel in copa, which I absolutely loved. I made many friends there and went out with them. It was fun and the rooms weren't bad. I stayed in an all girls room. I want to go back to Brazil so bad! And stay for like a month
