Awesome video!! I enjoyed it! I was glad to see these come through Sacramento this day. I was monitoring Amtraks map the whole day as this train was almost 7 hours late lol but it made it's way through Sacramento just before it was completely dark which set up a nice scenery.
Amtrak is now donating its old equipment to commuter railroad across the country. Amtrak has already donated several f59phi, mostly surfliner f59phi to Metra.
Wow, this is news. I will always miss the CalTrain’s MP36’s and F40’s after CalMod, but it is good to know CalTrain will be giving the AEM-7s another life for a short time though. Thanks for the amazing video!
No, MP36PH's will be used for service South of Tamien Station, because the Overhead Catenary ends there, and there is service expansion underway down to Salinas.
I love Caltrain, I rode them to and from school when I was a teenager. The F40s were always a great sight. Wish after the SP stopped being carrier Caltrain kept "Huff & Puff" around but beggers can't be choosers I guess. Great video!
Thank you! The line has changed so much over the years. It's a far cry from the days of the SP. It would be neat to go back now to see what it was like when SP was still doing the commuter operations.

Caltrain AEM -7 # 938 has been rebuild and repaint to Caltrain colors and is still number # 938 it looks great I would love to have a HO Scale model of it
More than 2, at least for the time being. Two DC motors are preserved at different museums, the 915 at RRMPA and the 945 at IRM. TTCI in Pueblo, CO has the 942 and 928, both AC motors, for testing, although they are not officially preserved. And neither are these two, although they are now safe from scrapping at least for a while. Amtrak also still has a few more AEM-7ACs not yet scrapped, including the 901 (oldest surviving motor).
wow! I saw AEM7s 942 and 928 on the southwest chief back in 2017, I beleive those two were headed to Pueblo's Testing Center. (I was in Pueblo a week later, but I didn't see those two)
They probably won't be utilized for too long, considering it's only being done for testing purposes. And from what I've heard one unit will be used for spare parts anyway. So once it hits the rails, make sure to catch it while you can!
I’m curious to see what happens with the Acela trainsets once the old ones get taken out of service within the next few years. Wonder if Caltrain will get em
I was wondering about that, since they have 3 F40PH-3Cs and 6 MP36PH-3Cs. Unless they begin running more than 3 trains to/from Gilroy on weekdays, they only really need 4. I'm assuming the recent overhauls of the MPI F40s cements the theory that they're sticking around for a while- I just wonder how many MP36s will remain.
For anyone wondering, as of June 20th, they were in the Oakland coach yard and fully visible from the rails. I saw them sandwiched between a P42DC and two Dash 8s from a westbound Capitol Corridor. Honestly, they will probably be there for a year or two. I imagine eventually they'll be tacked onto the Coast Starlight and taken to San Jose, where some switcher will take them to the nearby Caltrain maintenance facility.
Yeah, but that's not really a good thing, when it puts 6 beautiful F40PHs in danger of being scrapped, one of which just happens to be extremely special due to it having been the last F40PH ever built.
Remember, ACE only runs 4 consists at once, 2 of which will always be a bit longer and have a doubleheader. They only need 4 Chargers because with their extra horsepower, they don't need doubleheaders anymore. And for the expansions, they can just buy more Chargers later on, like how Amtrak plans to buy 75 Chargers, but that'll certainly grow as time progresses.
@@superbaddy4 They will need more than 4 locomotives because of 90 day maintenance cycles. So either they are replacing 4 of the F40s and keeping 2 or these are just to add to the fleet.
