Not really a hazard, but I love NHRL's "Fluffy", the heavily armored helper bot that occasionally goes in when a bot needs a nudge to get unstuck. I especially like the idea of having a mega-Fluffy available if the stick/unstuck rules are simplified, which is the rumor.
I suggest we add a surprise box to the center of the ring containing one of three options: a solid Iron block, a net, or a 40$ gift certificate to Applebees. The surprise changes each match.
Annoyance: Spinny disc on floor -- you will NOT go in a straight line. Put it square in the middle of the floor to make box rushes fail, and to stop camping in the center.
Both of those things were literally in the first season of Battlebots. The "square" you are talking about wasn't stationary though. It lifted out of the floor. But the spinny discs were definitely there.
Teflon coat the floor to make it super slick, so all the bots move like they are on ice Or several floor panels that have flippers like blip, that will go off when a bot is on them, only they can randomize the location of them so nobody knows what panel will flip you 18ft in the air.
I just asked my son, and he suggested the Battlebots Logo in the center of the arena becomes a giant spinning turntable during the last minute of a fight. [FYI: He is currently 0-2 with his antweight "Chisel", but at least both were judge's decisions. We are working on improvements.]
I would take out the midle island and put in a central see-saw ramp that not only blocks the starting blitz-rush but then changes as the chalengers move over it and it slowly tips up & down.
I would add a partial section of wall that raises out of the center of the arena for 10 seconds. Each team has the option to trigger it once per match, and it can be used to either flip the opponent like a hellraiser/floor spike, or provide one's own bot with some temporary cover to allow for spinup.
god you woulldn't be ablle to see the fight when ankle biter spinners/kenetic energy weapons are on the fight with all the gravel being tossed up into the arena glass.
Really, really appreciate the Builder Blog, Zach, and Diana. Informative, Educational and Hilarious is a good combination, so thank you! -- New Hazard Prediction: Imperial Stormtroopers stationed in Red and Blue squares at start of fight, that ask for 'bot credentials. Failure to comply results in 'bot being detained for questioning, but Using The Force ('this is not the 'droid you're looking for') will allow the match to continue.
The upper deck slowly extends across the box over the course of the fight, reaching fully one end to the other by the end of a 3 minute fight. It grows taller in the process, inevitably obscuring the view of the drivers. Corralling your opponent to be trapped on your side of the upper deck becomes critical for victory.
How do you even build a 250lb robot in 6 weeks??? That is crazy! I am building a 3lb beetleweight combat robot for a competition that I gave myself a 3 month time constraint to design, build, and test while working 40-50 hours a week. Pretty sure my testing will end up being at the tournament haha! Anyway, great video as always, keep up the amazing work!
In my virtual robot combat community, what we've found as the most annoying arena hazard is a pit sitting right in the center of the arena. The pit could be anywhere, but it'd be very annoying and end a lot of good fights early with people accidently driving into it.
Hydraulic loaded drop pits in the starting squares to "encourage aggression". If you do not get out of the Square fast enough it drops the bot two feet then launches the bot out a'la Hydra and Blip style.
Annoyance hazard: a radio wave emitting device that interferes with the wireless connection between robots and controllers just to “even it out”. Rip whiplash.
I'd just make random panels in the floor be varying distances away from each other, to the point where even bots without wedges would get caught. The gaps would change every half day too, so you would have no idea what configuration the floor would be.
To answer the question on new hazards: Random floor panels that are in fact hooked to gas pistons that fire upwards. The whole floor panel is a flipper, and some are angled flippers and other just yeet the unlucky bot on them directly vertical. Think Hydra levels of flipping power, but about 6 of them in the arena. Self righting mechs are now 100% mandatory!
If there was one hazard I could add in the box, it would be a steel piston that shoots up. It was in the OG Battlebots and really turned the tide of many battles. As for the Skorpios you’re building now, it looks great Zach. Can’t wait to see it complete. Wonder how hard the hammer saw will hit.
First of all... RUSTY AND DAVE!!! Nice!!! As far as an annoying hazard to add to the arena... How about lights out or a light change for 1 -2 seconds? This could be fun such as red lights or something. The drivers would have to either be lucky on where their bot is at the time of the light change or use it to their advantage.
Fishing Nets 5 feet off of the ground covering the entire arena that starts flashing and playing laughing stock sound files if you get hit into it and stuck. It also obscures vision from the drivers box
Let's see...I think instead of adding a completely new hazard, let's just bring the hellraisers from the classic era back! That way, robots like Hydra and End Game can't just sit in the center for too long! 😁
Instead of the platform, add a raised section of the arena, maybe even in the middle, where you have to drive up a ramp "top" (top will be only a couple of inches though and there's no cliffs, so it's sloped on all sides). If a bot drives up there, they get some sort of an advantage... Anyway, point would be to limit floor scraping some and give bots that DON'T scrape the floor some sort of a chance.
Hazard: 2 separate Bumps in the floor that only raise up a couple inches inches over a 5ft area that spin at random rates or slowly pick up speed during the fight. makes sitting and waiting near them a pain and lowers but doesn't eliminate ground game effectiveness. It also would provide a small space near them that might allow spinners not fighting so much for ground game a place they could easily spin up.
Hazard idea. Once the tournament starts every bot that gets eliminated is hung from the ceiling of the box but made ready to fight. If they somehow get knocked down, they are back in the fight and get another shot in the bracket if they win that fight. Would annoy flippers for sure.
I believe Paul's said he doesn't want to come back until all contestants are fairly (or even just a little) compensated for the huge lengths and expenses they go to for the show
I think the terrible hazard that I would add would be a button that raises the floor slightly in different areas of the arena that are controlled by each team. A driver would be able to corral their enemy to that area and slightly lift them off the ground or high center the enemy bot guarantee themselves the ground game. I would put these right in the center of the arena where there are currently few hazards so as to encourage bots to move across the entire arena and discourage camping.
fun answer: i would add a big basket ball net. Only to encourage flippers, or powerful verts who can launch bots 10 feet in the air. id put it directly across from the drivers. I just thinkk it would be fun, no bonus points or anything, and make the hoop thin metal with a big hoop so bots dont get stuck. serious answer: i would add a n out of the area zone but make the imedate foot of floor uneven terain, again id put it directly across from the drivers.
Bring back the hell raisers, Turn the kilk saws into kill disks, they are heavier disks Put a pillar in the middle of the box, Make a ramp in the box Put swinging flails in, Or just put nightmare in the corner of the box
I would say, make a house robot from robot wars, similar to matilda's old chainsaw in a way is to add a crusher or slicer that is literally longer than most of the robots. It is also able to reach and slice bots like huge and mamoth.
My sister's suggestions: 1) floor squares that randomly raise four feet (and come back down) in about a second. or 2) two words: Holographic Tombstone!
My Floor Hazard: "Box Rush Defense!!" A hydraulic metal wall that shoots out at the beginning of the match when one bot tries a box rush and the other stays in their square!!! Idea #2: Like the Hammers, each team gets a hydraulic flipper in the middle of the arena!!! (Imagine Hyrda getting Hydra'd while Hydra-ing an opponent!)
How to annoy the drivers that's very simple Step 1 take the shelf. Step 2 make it so it can lift up and down during a fight. Step 3 replace the floor of the shelf to a metal gate/mesh that curved slightly so it's harder to drive of it. Step 4 laughs in evil Step 5 profit
Suggestion for an annoying hazard for drivers? Make a pit of non-Newtonian fluid near the middle of the box, if you drive fast over it you are ok, go too slow or dig your weapon/forks in and it is game over lol.
I think that the shelf should have higher walls (Maybe a centimeter or an inch or so) and on the shelf they should put some kind of hazard (saws, hellraisers, flames, etc.) so that way flippers and control bots do get something out of getting a robot on the shelf. Considering that safety won't allow for the oota anymore it would give robots who otherwise can't do much a chance.
I would make a big piece of fabric in the middle so it can possibly jam up other bots weapons. It would also make it hard to drive and see your bot because it is like a big box of fabric in the middle
1 inch blocks of metal randomly welded to the floor just before each fight so ground game becomes a nightmare and you cant keep track of a exact route where you can avoid them... sound perfectly fine to me ; )
How about a cheap gimmick. Each team has a button they can only push once per fight. When pushed the other teams’ driver box is blocked with a screen for a few seconds.
Zack, have you considered using TPU for your battery boxes? The layer bonding is unmatched which would make it unlikely to split the way yours did. It is also a synthetic rubber so it will be shock absorbing as well. IT may be heavier but adjusting infill can off set that.
A large 10' square by 5' deep hole to trap bots in, positioned directly in the center of the battlebox. This forces bots to remain closer to the walls and adds an element of frustration and chaos for any horizontal spinner, gives bots like Hydra and Duck! a little more opportunity for victory by sending their opponents into said pit, and at the size and depth, it should be able to swallow most bots whole with ease.
Obnoxious hazard idea: Securely weld Tombstone's chassis with weapon to the long side of the Upper Deck, facing out into the middle of the arena with the longest bar Ray has available. Fill the inside of the Upper Deck with extra batteries and run that bad boy continuously. And just to make it extra spicy, gear it for 300 mph tip speed. Yeah. At'll do.
My idea for a new annoying hazard is randomly placed super magnets on the battle box floor that when a bot goes over gets them stuck in place giving the opponent a free hit since the other team would be stuck until hit
Honestly, all the worst hazards I can think of (a fog that covers the entire arena, a spinning section of the floor, heavy objects just dropping from the ceiling) have already been done by [REDACTED] I mean by noone at all. Excited to see the new Skorpios nonetheless.
I honestly don’t like the idea of house robots in battlebots. Mostly b/c they might have a big influence on fights. Even if they wanted to, I don’t think they could add them. Because of American gameshow rules, the house robots would have to be either: completely autonomous or controlled by the teams themselves. I really wouldn’t want to see fights where you are winning, but the house robot decides you should loose, and stomps you into the ground. Honestly for battlebots, I think simplicity is better. I would personally add a thin strip that would be about 1/3 the length of the box, and have it lie in the middle of the box, separating the starting squares. The dimensions should be 1/3 the length of the box, 1” wide, 1/4” tall. Just something to break up the arena. I don’t want something that completely changes how the game is played, just a minor disruption that teams can either avoid or use to their advantage.
OML that sounds so boring 🥱 Come back when you actually learn how to come up with good ideas. People want to see robots get destroyed, not play ring around the rosy.
The most annoying hazard possible would probably be speed bumps, but not those big, light ones. It has to be those little awful hellish ones that come out of nowhere.
2:00 Awesome prints! When you assemble them, will you put steel/aluminum bushings in the mounting holes? Because of the "relaxation" common in plastics? Or a disc spring underneath the bolt heads? I remember my 1998 Subaru's intake manifold made out of cast plastic, with steel bushings inside the mounting holes, so you could really tighten the bolts/screws. The bushings were a slight bit shorter than the intake flanges. [Edit] Hazard: An electric shock to the drivers when riding over a certain tile of the battlebots floor 😉 Again, awesome team, bot and blog, thank you!
Fancy seeing you here! Skorpios has been one of my favorite teams to keep up with the last three years, and sure enough the Boom king is here as well, lol.
I would add the fog of war from Robot Wars, but put it in the driver's booth. Or have the floor in a checker board pattern and have the squares higher or lower by like 2 or 3 inches
It amazes me they give such little notice. I feel like a lot of these teams have great ideas that can’t be put to use due to the limited time. I can’t wait to see rusty in #nextweek video 🤣. To annoy the drivers, put up spike strips on the walls and in the middle of the floor. Get ground bots stuck and those with larger wheels punctured.
My hazard would be a press. That pins a bot that it cannot move for 2-3 seconds and is at the whim of spinners. For flippers bots to take advantage some sort of lift, where it lifts a bot and a flipper can easily get their tool under the bot and send it flying.
I would have random metal cylinders all over the arena that just randomly rise up like a foot or 2 into the area. Not necessarily to try and hit the robots though it will happen, but to just randomly restrict the space and make things difficult. I feel like that would annoy the drivers so much!
What terrible hazard would I add to annoy the drivers? Hmm. I was going to say The FOJ of WOHH, but that'd be too kind. So, instead, I propose this: A large slab of metal, a raised floor if you will, taking up a third of the arena. If you get stuck on top, absolutely nothing changes. You're just told to drive off. It also makes two Death Corners which are great for the verts and then completely kills the dominant horizontal spinners that definitely have made the top 8 since 2019. They also make it impossible for drivers to see some sections of the box! Genius, right? So what will I call this incredible idea? The Couch.
Definitely make a house robot that’s just Hydra with the bike rack that corrals bots into the corners for no reason
😂
Remove the flipper, though.
@@Living_Murphys_Law keep the flipper, but never use it
The house 'bots is why Robot Wars sucks. It's too much of the contestants fighting the house. They have way too many floor hazards too.
I agree, I prefer a fair fight to forced entertainment through unnecessary extras like hazards and house robots.

Complete control flashbacks*
Annoyance: Spinny disc on floor -- you will NOT go in a straight line. Put it square in the middle of the floor to make box rushes fail, and to stop camping in the center.
That's brilliant. Simple, but a fantastic tweak to the meta and attack/defense plans.
Both of those things were literally in the first season of Battlebots. The "square" you are talking about wasn't stationary though. It lifted out of the floor. But the spinny discs were definitely there.
@@jaylay9524 op wasnt talking bout a actual square, just putting the disk directly in the middle of the floor to mess up box rushes

😂
No cleaning up the Battlebox inbetween fights. As the days progress, the box continues to fill with scrap and carnage.
Good idea. And "scrap" should include every part that isn't the heaviest piece left of a destroyed bot. (Good luck, Ghost Raptor!)
Debris is dangerous with spinners
@@Leatherface123. and the spinners aren’t?!
@@TheSamwaldo they are, but when throwing debris, they are deadlier

New hazard: Ray Billings with a sledgehammer.
I propose adding speed bumps all around the battle box to completely alter the meta of the ground game.
I had a similar idea, except as a ring around the center of the box.
Heck yeah -- I mentioned rumble strips for the same reason.
thats really smart lol

Jumpscares: Instead of disrupting the robot, a cardboard cutout chosen by the opponent pops up in front of your driver's box for 5 seconds.
I would take out the midle island and put in a central see-saw ramp that not only blocks the starting blitz-rush but then changes as the chalengers move over it and it slowly tips up & down.
The hazard I would add:
A single very sticky floor tile. :)
BattleBots glue rat trap.
I would add a partial section of wall that raises out of the center of the arena for 10 seconds. Each team has the option to trigger it once per match, and it can be used to either flip the opponent like a hellraiser/floor spike, or provide one's own bot with some temporary cover to allow for spinup.
A Gravel Floor would be a great way to shake up the ground game. You don't have to worry about 'certain spots' being bad anymore

[Edit]
Hazard: An electric shock to the drivers when riding over a certain tile of the battlebots floor 😉
Again, awesome team, bot and blog, thank you!
yaaahhh.. Rusty next week
I would add opposing team controlled flipping panels to the upper deck as a new hazard!
Fancy seeing you here! Skorpios has been one of my favorite teams to keep up with the last three years, and sure enough the Boom king is here as well, lol.
@@MongooseJakeNerf they are so fun to watch! Great team! Great driving!
I would add a smoke screen as a hazard, that would drive the drivers crazy lol.
That's not fair for Fusion. He's used to driving in smoke.
I would add the fog of war from Robot Wars, but put it in the driver's booth. Or have the floor in a checker board pattern and have the squares higher or lower by like 2 or 3 inches
Wait but why there is already a new version of rusty and hypershock rival pack and we didn't even see that on this season? 🤔🤔🤔
If we're trying to annoy the drivers, there's nothing better/worse than the fog of war from the Robot Wars reboot.
As I recall, didn't the comedy central version of the battlebox have inward facing spikes all around it on the walls?
New box hazard: rumble strips. ;)
Looks great but what do you do with the old versions of scorpios?
They get eaten by the new ones to pass on their power.
You know what Battlebots needs? A flamethrower to get a nice bot barbeque up and going. Would make control bots more potent.
hazard idea: each team gets a remote operated handgun inside the box with five shots
There are a few Bots' that would shrug off pretty much any hand gun projectile.
My hazard would be a press. That pins a bot that it cannot move for 2-3 seconds and is at the whim of spinners. For flippers bots to take advantage some sort of lift, where it lifts a bot and a flipper can easily get their tool under the bot and send it flying.
Add conveyor belts and tiles with just industrial sanding belts (the belts would turn on a off like the killsaws)
I WANT NEXT WEEK TO COME SO MUCH! RUSTY!!
The Couch.
New hazard idea: 10ft x 10ft pit in the middle of the arena (upper deck still included)
Are you trolling?
