      The thing that I find is if you have music and dancing but a dry wedding your guests are going to leave after the first dances and speeches. Most people need a little liquid courage to dance. Regardless of that, it's just more fun to dance after 2 cocktails.

      @@stardustmelody2709 do you think beer and wine is enough? I want people to have fun but I'm not a drinker and my fiancé has non-alcoholic fatty liver disease so he has to watch his alcohol. We are planning on having a small backyard wedding and we don't want anyone to be wasted and don't really feel like buying a bunch of expensive alcohol because we have a small budget. (We will be having soda and other drinks too, it's not like that one person who only had water as a beverage lol)

      @@cuppy3874 wine and beer can totally work for the vast majority of people, or you could even premix a big batch of some sort of punch or something and put it in a dispenser so it's not exposed to air, and you can say it's a "themed cocktail" or some such for those who want liquor.

    I really like your point about conversation being its own entertainment - maybe it's just me and my friend group, but all of us tend to really dislike it when a wedding has too many group activities that we can't ignore without being rude, like sketches, speeches, singalongs, etc. Depending on who you're inviting, weddings may well be a reunion moment for some people, and giving people time to chat and catch up can actually be really appreciated, I think.

    My spouse and I, when we got married almost a year ago, had our reception at a mini golf place/vintage arcade that we love for going to on date nights/rainy weekends. The place was so unique, colorful, fun and we had a lot people (as well as kids who attended) saying that it was their favorite place and didn’t want the party to end! We consider our post-wedding party a huge success because of the feedback!! 😂

      We also have a local indoor water park that isn't too huge to rent out and has food facilities. The main attraction is a lazy river. I think that place also would be a wonderfully fun wedding reception. Guests would need to know to bring a swimsuit though!

    We were an older couple when we got married merging two existing households with kids into one. Our friends were also families with kids, so we ended up having a "formal" reception at a shelter of a County park that also hosted a water park. After the formal stuff was done, everyone changed clothes and enjoyed the afternoon at the waterpark!. Our photographer even stayed past her time to grab a few shots and enjoy her afternoon. Loads of fun!

      ok, I can now tell you how it went! Absolutely amazing! My guests LOVED this! Everyone had so much fun, they were entertained, they got to interact with each other and they made beautiful memories with us!
      Pros: Unique, Fun, Entertaining and Memorable.
      Cons: Difficult for large groups, It is a bit costly, It is not traditional so those who are expecting 'traditional' may be confused.
      We had very little hiccups with this event but the ones we did have were with our timeline changing from a scheduled 3 acts being culled back to 2 acts. This effected the start and finish times of other events schedule for the evening, but we were able to pivot easily.
      Our guests that did understand what was going on really leaned into the dressing up to cosplay a 1920's-1930's theme that the Murder Mystery set. It was really fun to see all the beaded dresses, pin stripes and gangster hats! My guests, mostly my 70+ guests, did not dress up so much but they did enjoy themselves and even participated in the activities!
      I would recommend this idea for a couple that is non-traditional, maybe a little older (30's-40's), and is looking to have a smaller group in a smaller more intimate venue. We had a total of 40 guests and we held it in The Endicott Estate in Dedham MA, which is an old mansion that was built at the turn of the century and specifically designed to host parties.
      I hope this helps some people who may be looking for a unique wedding idea!

    Thought bubble: in the awkward "between time" from ceremony to reception while the couple is off taking photos, a dance instructor with the guests to go through some classic moves (and perhaps some of the fun choreographed like Nutbush, Macarena, etc etc) so when the dance floor kicks off later in the day everyone's confidence is a little higher!

    Hasbro makes giant versions of a bunch of their classic boardgames. I am thinking about having them as a boardgame/lawn game hybrid. We have some other lawn games and plan to have some traditional size board/card games. We're also going to put conversation topics and trivial pursuit cards at each table. I think they'll be in little cups in the middle.

    My husband is WW2 buff and loves everything military. When we were looking for venues I found out that there was an Aircraft carrier moored near us. They regularly rented out space for events. I brought my husband over one weekend for a tour and asked him what he thought of getting married here. He was over the moon. We got married on the fantail at sunset over looking the SF bay and Bay bridge. We had docent lead tours of the ship. its been 16 years and we still have family tell us how much fun they had.

    Worked as a wedding server/bartender for 12 years (off site catering- many different venues, hotel, golf club) - some of the sweetest non-dancing moments;
    *scavenger hunt for the kids. Raffle tickets for the adults- Yeti cooler for the win!
    *groups of friends & family karaoke during speeches- shortened love songs. This was planned ahead & had a few spontaneous moments
    *tarot cards, the couple were twin flames
    *magician during cocktail hour
    *pinball & arcade games with awesome anime soundtrack playing
    *dueling pianos, comedy skit was interwoven with the couples love story
    *ceremony hosted on family farm, everyone walked around and fed the animals with pre-placed buckets of treats during cocktail hour & bonded
    *family lake house- after the ceremony a few people went fishing off the dock, some started a bonfire, others toured the garden & played with the family dog. A few aunts re-purposed flowers for centerpieces before the reception. Some of the cousins even helped us set up tables & move chairs 🥹 Nicest family ever!
    #djsAreTheUnsungHeros;
    *gorgeous summer night, not a dancing crowd so they went outside to hang out, someone opened their gift and brought out lawn games. DJ’s went outside and handed out glow sticks to get the party going, headed inside at 10pm, crowd went until 2am! B&G weren’t even mad!

We'll get to that wedding one day! Haha. I hope yours is great :)

    A little bit of a controversial subject/topic lately, so take it with a grain of salt, it just fits for me and my partner’s lifestyle:
    We are friends with a professional drag queen. So we’re having a mini drag show at our wedding. And we didn’t have to pay anything, just had to guarantee they are on our official guest list and a separate room to prepare.

I also plan to have a Polaroid guest book and if I can afford it, I want to have a water color artist that will do paintings of my guests! Oh, and maybe a bounce house! We have a DJ so dancing will also be an option but my fiancé and I won’t be dancing.

    I think you could do a bigger murder mystery than just 50 people. There is an underground salt mine a few hours from me that does weddings (I'm so tempted to have it as my venue, but I want to get married at my dad's church and don't want my guests to have to drive that far for a reception), and they also do a "murder in the mine" dinner every few months in the same space they do weddings. I'll have to check how many that space will accommodate, but i think it's more than 50. They have a pro group of actors come in to run it though, so I think if you are using it for a bigger group, hire professionals - don't DIY it.

    I think the comedian would depend largely on the bride and groom and their guests and their similarities in humor. For instance, my boyfriend and I have completely different senses of humor even though we have each other giggling so much every day. However, the things his family find funny and what my family find funny vary greatly. We're an interracial couple from different locations, upbringings, views, and social class so that says a lot.

    Im a hugeee escape room fan and love puzzles and stuff, my partner and I ahve done many together, but I just know my guests couldnt care less. My wedding is already a bit too nerdy for them, and even the music is not to their taste so it does seem like forcing it. I will add some sort of short optional mini escape room to do, if anyone ends up doing it ill be happy, like a side activity. I think Im starting to get too anxious about people enjoying it because I have to invite a lot of family that just dont care and dont really know me. To be fair, my partners family is crazy and I love that so they may acome through. When I introduced my silly traditions to his family dinners they all jumped and tried doing it (they are latin, Im english), so I have faith in them xD
    It-s just hard to find a balance between satisfying my nerd side and not having visible disgust faces, my partner is as much as a nerd as me but is very care free, doesnt really care what we do as long as I like it (although I know he will like some of the surprises I prepared for him)
