What a gorgeous car! Mine is a 3.8 with manual moss box and overdrive. Dark blue with bisquit interior. The overdrive can be very tricky, if it's leaking and have not the right pressures but it's really fun to drive. And the sound is even better with an original exhaust system, not the stainless steel ones. I like the start button the most and miss this in my XJ. Love these things 😁
Isn't the overdrive a mechanical gear then?.. I always wondered, surley it would have been easier just to add a 5th lol different time. I love the mk2 especially in your spec
I have the later 240 MOD and it is superbly smooth probably because the stroke is quite short. With a slightly shorter final drive it has plenty enough torque. With EPAS the driving experience is enhanced massively. Fantastic car!
Minor point, but that car has been fitted with the rear seat from an S-type or 420 - see the dimpled narrow pleated leather and the curved shape where it meets the plain leather along the top. The Mark 2's rear seat has broad, plain pleats matching the front / has a straight edge where the pleats meet the top, and is flat from side-to-side with no "shaping".
Ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper, this British icon has been my all time no 1 ,and its close family member the E type has been my no 1 sports car.Even at 66 yrs of age, nothing has changed.
Our 1960 3.8 has been fitted with a full synchro jaguar box out of a XJ6. It also has O/D fitted. We have a Jaguar Moss box in our older Mark V Jaguar which is difinitely agricultural & slower shifting than the full synchro box. The better gear ratios & not have to come to a complete stop to select 1st gear are other benefits of the synchro box, making the car more pleasant to drive in modern traffic.
I had a MK2 nearly 50 years ago and would love to get another one but prices have soared. I think it is possible to over restore a car so that you dare hardly use it ! Thanks for showing this car.
Thank you for sharing this video. It used to be a car for gangsters in the UK :) but it is very charming and my favourite car. Red body and red leather interior is awesome. I used to have a brown one with beige interior in my younger years.
The "infamous" Moss gearbox is a relic from the 1930's, isn't it? My E Type has one and it's definitely vintage. Slow synchros on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and no synchro whatsoever on 1st gear at all. But it does make that sweet 1st gear whine which lets the world know you are driving a manual transmission British car.
That smile behind the steering wheel says everything :) We would like to see more road tests for sure... But will be great to get more details about the car next time, a bit story behind it... And more comments how the car behave on the road...
Nice Mk2 - that is probably the older non synchro gearbox model. I swapped one of those into my own s-type (1967) and was disappointed. A bit agricultural. My friend had a full synchro model and it was light years better. Unfortunately not easy to find. Top speed with the old moss gearbox in the s-type is quite a bit higher that the auto box. 120+. Acceleration is incredible. I learned to double declutch, yet it is a big heavy long throw unit - one can never completely master it, unlike an old Alfa. Anyway, lovely car. There is a mod that needs doing on overdrive, otherwise it slips. That's about all I know, apart from the engine mountings collapse due to too much weight (in the s-type). Check for cracks - better to fix it before the fan hits the radiator shroud.
Good looking car. I hope the paint job goes well. Silver on Red is a classy combo on convertibles - I hope it translates well to sedans. Thanks for pointing out the rear bumper logo. Never saw one of those before.
Lovely looking car. Another very lucky owner. If you get to drive this back to back with your S type, I think you'll notice quite a difference. Looking forward to see what you drive next.
Richard Michael Owen (UA-camr) is restoring an XK-150, but replacing the Moss box with a 5-speed LT-1. That might be a good choice for the S-type. I had a 3.8 automatic Mk.2 that I could only afford at 10 years old because it had been neglected and looked decrepit. (Metallic blue had faded and oxidised.) Any conflicts in traffic could be resolved by making eye contact with the other driver and thinking "Do you really want to hit this rusty tank?". The Webasto (cloth) sunroof was great, though.
@@LivingWithAClassic Would a GM part be more expensive than an old Jaguar one, especially if the Moss needed fixing? The 3.8 was acceptably brisk, though it was probably well worn.
Never hear a mention of the Mk1..So much character They had the best dash of all and the big black 4 spoke steering wheel was cool. I Had a black 3.4 1959 with disc brakes.. and a grey 2.4.. I never see them now, not even at Jaguar events.. remains my most desired Jag..
dig'n the contrasting body colored steelies! and gotta be one of the best looking sedans ever built. .. do the manual. you don't even need the overdrive. will do 60mph at about 2500 rpm. after all, my 2007 porsche cayman is pulling the same rpms at comparable speeds. and yes, 1st and 2nd are more to the right than on more modern manual transmissions. and not surprisingly, 3rd and 4th are even more to the right. the clutch is a delight. and i agree. the red on red is a bit much. with the red exterior, the interior needs to be either black or better yet, tan or brown. the silver and red will be lovely.
These are wonderful sports sedans. Much more fun to drive than their contemporary Mercedes sedans. Only things close were the sporting Alfa Giulia Super sedans, but they were slower and not as nice inside as a Jaguar.
Very nice Adam, it lovely. Sir William Lyons certainly was a man with great vision, the Mark 2, the XJ 120, 140, and 150, the XKE, the XJ 6 Series 1, 2 and 3, and the XJS, all wonderful cars, combining, Grace, Space and Pace ! More videos of other classic Jaguars would be great !
@@LivingWithAClassic Yes he did ! I have an '83 XJ 6, and an '88 XJS V12, both cars drive so well, a real pleasure. Wish I had a Mark 2 and a XK 120, 140 or 150 also.
Love these cars (I would I have one) looks like the rear seat is from an S Type. I think you were being generous with your comment 'you are restoring an S Type' you're as bad as me I have been restoring my MKII since 1988 :( . Got to say my preference for your S Type is to put a Tremec manual box (5 speed) in it, that makes the car such fun to drive. Having driven many Jaguars with the 'Moss Box' the upgrade is well worth it.

i prefer these with those steelies, as shown, rather than the wires. the minimal hubcaps and chrome beauty rings were a popular look in the 60's. IIRC they were standard on a number of mercedes models. the atrocious looking wire wheel hubcaps that came standard on some premium american cars of the 80's have turned me off of WWs forever.

Beautiful. When having the exterior restored I'd have that unsightly aerial removed. The less holes in the body the better! Gotta be a manual Adam.
I'd love a manual if I can find a transmission and afford it
