I'm glad to see more people are adopting light trucks, and not overloading traditional utes. You can even buy 4x4 versions of these light trucks, and they make a great camping/touring setup.
Yeah, spot on, Im currently building a camper from an FTS 750, I live in a tourist area and every landcruiser, etc, larger caravan setup you see are well overweight and theres a lot of caravan rollovers and crashes as a result , also the dual cab 4x4 light trucks are cheaper than the usual contenders..

Fantastic. A lot of caravaners could benefit from knowing about this option instead of driving around loaded to the eyeballs. Great review. Mitsubishi also does a light truck range. I enjoyed this, thank you.
if they can afford dedicated caravan vehicle - yes it will be better than overloaded ute. But with ute you can uncouple caravan and get a car, with truck you get, ummm, truck. And I am not sure how it works as longhaul mover.
Caravanners would be best upgrading their licence to LR and buying one with the 5.2 engine. Pulls stronger, better exhaust braking (they say no replacement for displacement for a reason), and far more payload and GVM/GCM headroom. LR licences aren't onerous or difficult, yeah there's a 0.0 BAC (which arguably it should be for everyone) and a 100km/h maximum speed (you won't be towing a caravan faster than that, let's be honest) and logbook requirements and regular stops at weighbridges don't kick in until the next heavy vehicle licence class. Add a nice set of lockable boxes or a service body, you can get it sooner than a LandCruiser 300, and with the money you'll save you can afford a small hatch or sedan for commuting and around town duties. Think hard about if you really need 4x4 though, as that more than doubles the price for the truck out of the factory, and that's before the further conversions you'll need to make before it's usable in hardcore off-roading. And if you insist on the car-licence version, it's GVM is MUCH less usable.
When I worked for a Garden Supply, a few of the Landscape Gardeners were starting to buy little Tip Trucks instead of getting another Dual Cab Ute. 3 Tonne Payloads + Towing Capacity makes it easier for them to tow their excavator or skid steer. Get rid of waste material from sites and of course get materials for the job too.
Driven one of these in the past and the turning circle is next level, especially compared to a Land Cruiser, will probably blow every dual cab away as well.

Competitiors for the Isuzu NPR 45 155 are the Fuso Canter 515 and the Hino 300 617. As for the AMT's, there are two AMT's available: the standard fluid clutch AMT (which is what is in this NPR 45 155 Traypack) or a TC-AMT (Torque Converter AMT) - this utilises a torque coverter like a full fluid automatic transmission
I used to work for a refrigerated transport business where the entire fleet was Isuzu, this model and MR and HR vehicles, every single day some of these vehicles would get an absolute hiding and scarcely had issues, typical Japanese vehicles, just worked.
@cam181990 So, you don't stop anywhere, you just drive 6 - 8 hours a day? And they may not be plush, but any issues with 'comfort' are a real stretch.
I’ve owned a NPR 45-155 for the last 8 years and use it daily. I have tool boxes on the front half of the tray and use the rear part of the trade for all sorts. The only drawback I have is rear wheel traction in the wet. It is easy to get bogged on the bitumen in the wet on a hill. I would probably upgrade to a 4x4 model with super singles, but the 4.5t is a sweet spot for accessing council tips with a 4.5t CGM access limit

We have a slightly larger model at work. You really need to manually change gears yourself as it is programmed for economy and gets to sixth gear as soon as it can. They are slow to recover if you leave it in auto and hit a hill (of any size). Manual gives you full control for downhill too.
I've worked on alot of these, you can take it to the dealer or if you've got the right service tool and adjust the shift requirements or do a gearbox learn. Improves them a fair bit.
Thanks. That was a very comprehensive review. I pick one up next week and I'll be pulling my caravan with it 24/7. I'll let you all know what I think after a few weeks.
I tow a 3 tonne caravan of which I live in. Recently I was looking at light trucks in NZ, but Isuzu were well out of my price range. I did test drive a Hyundai and considered a Foton "work ready". Neither dealer would trade my last ute. I'd like to see more reviews like this.
Absolutely do this against a ute, loaded and towing. If you'd have had a tonne on the back of that, those sine waves and rough roads would improve dramatically. Proper trucks don't like being empty, they're real workhorses. Edit: also, lets be honest it does have bottle storage. Truckers use the dash for that, it's probably part of the reason it's designed at that angle.
Absolutely fantastic to see you do a light truck review Paul. I would certainly consider this over a pickup. Great for towing a caravan or boat. Could be specifically set up for camping without being overly expensive. Great review
Would love the test in comparison to utes. This is great, love your reviews. It’s so hard to get any basic reviews on these light duty trucks, so having you go so in-depth is actually awesome
Just brought one after looking at every ute on the market. This ended up making the most sense for my business personally. Can carry longer and heavier loads all with a possible 4t tow capacity. If i brought new xlt ranger it was 70k plus on roads and thats before adding canopy , bullbar, towbar roof racks ect. The trade pack cost me 85k driveaway , cant beat that
Have been thinking about a silverado. But the bang for your buck and actually working every day the functionality of this is remarkable. Great reveiw thanks
ISUZU did well with the new N - series here in Kenya we have the NQR dominating the transport sector both in transporting loads and passengers category though in our market you only find the 6 speed manual transmission
Fantastic review. If you need to tow 4500kg this is half or less than the price of an American dual cab. Would love if you could review the 4wd version against the iveco daily
The best part of this video was watching you seamlessly continuing on with your presentation while, at the same time, casually giving us all the 'great Aussie salute', ( swatting flies ) . Well done, son - you're a true Aussie! 🤣🤣🤣
Great review Paul, if you want a truck expert to do reviews, give us a shout here in Adelaide. One thing to note about these trucks is that many people see the space and fill it, ultimately the vehicle is overloaded and the upgrade to the truck license often leads buyers wishing they had gone down this path earlier and bought a bigger truck. That 1 ton fills pretty quick for many trades.
That was a dead set hoot Paul. Please do more ! I've been in transport for 20 years, seen the arrival of AMTs, and I really enjoyed this / your review. We currently have an AMT Van and an AMT MR Pantech. I drive both manually, because I can. You had fun doing this review ! Good ! #carexpert
Great review Paul! Good to see how light commercial vehicle stack up against Utes.. Love to see infotainment is superior, mond you Isuzu Satnav is Truck specific meaning get you out of wood stocking under bridges etc 😉
My son has a swb one of these. The whole tray is basically a large toolbox. He has every tool known to mankind that a plumber may need. The ladder rack has pvc pipe and copper pipe and 3 ladders. He has a 200lt diesel fuel tank at the very back of the tray. I can tell you the ride as far as driver and passenger goes is not good, even when loaded. At least the driver has a suspension seat. I was interested to see if this was a better option for towing my caravan around Australia. As for payload it would be brilliant. As far as comfort goes, not a chance in hell I could convince the wife to sit in the passenger seat.
You might be able the replace the passenger seat with another suspended seat (might have to get a LHD version, though, so the controls are against the door).
good to appreciate what its like to drive trucks for a living (delivery driver, trades, construction etc) as to why its tiering to drive all day long or distance in a truck.
Great Video, I’d love to see a comparison with other light trucks, such as the hino 300 series, iveco daily, ford transit (they come in a truck too), the Mercedes sprinter (cab chassis) ect
we have tons of these in the road here in the philippines its a pretty versatile truck we use it mostly on delivering wet and dry goods, construction equipment, and many more. wanna have to get one for my sound system rental in the future.
Hi Paul nice review. I noticed that you might have missed a few items like the heated mirrors just under the compression break lever, and just under the infotainment sytem in that little hole you can wirerless charge your phone plus you can mount a pto for things like a dump tray, crane or cemet mixer but when you have a load on its better to leave the compression break on as you will burn though your breaks very quickly especially towing. But the Isuzu trucks are great. i have an FVD 165-300 with a crane on the back its a awsome tuck it has airbag rear end and airbag seat better for bumps and pot holes.
@CarExpertAus Always happy to help. my last piece of advice, if you are going to start reviewing more smaller trucks to save your back. open both doors first before flipping the cab as it act like a counterweight, makes lifting the cab easier. then just close them to bring the cab down.
Hi Paul, yes I would love you to compare towing capability between this Isuzu NPR to other dual cab configurations especially on your test track/s. Cheers ✌️👍
I had one of these trucks about 15 years ago, and other than the seat and infotainment system, virtually NOTHING has changed. The switches, console and exterior are all the same. I would do the Melbourne-Wodonga run every week and it was as comfortable as a horse and cart. I always went home with back pain, so it's a good thing they added a suspension-seat.
Excellent review We have 2 Npr 400 model's. They are great on fuel and easy to maintain. One is fully equiped with tool boxs, additional fuel tank and hiab crane to service our earthmoving business. The best ability is it,s carrying capacity you don't need to unload equipment to get additional gear on board like the smaller utes on the market. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Would love to see more of these! Intersting to note that the car license can strewtch so well. Curious to see both the 3.5t and 4.5t towing with it. Keen to see it side by side against it's update in futrure as well. Maybe even comparison against populars like F150 & Next-Gen Ranger Wildtrack/Platinum (2024), of course not quite a fair comparison, but worth the fun of it..
great truck , I drive one most days, delivered last year, seat sucks. Suspension on seat bottoms out all the time and you feel it right up your spine I am 100kg.
You would need to get a "ute" of the same class (similar GVWR). Against a diesel F250 this Isuzu would get destroyed. The current model year F250 diesel is capable of 0 to 60 in as little as 5.5 seconds when empty and is limited to 30 seconds maximum at maximum trailer tow rating due to J2807 standards used to set tow ratings for vehicles sold in the US and Canada. J2807 is the reason that many vehicles rated to tow a particular amount in other parts of the world get a lower or even "not suitable" rating in North America.
Best review ever! And actually makes a lot of sense especially with the Euro 6d emission laws coming in next year in December but then again I think Toyota is getting pretty good with their hydrogen vehicles as well. Great review, and yes, please load it up.
Hi Paul, great review, I’d love to see a comparison of the equivalent Hino, Fuso & Isuzu….. I have a little Fuso Canter tipper with Duonic transmission that accelerates like a car. I’d like to see the fuel usage comparison especially, seeing as the Fuso makes similar power from a much smaller 3 litre engine. I think these make much more sense than a pick up for work as they can still tow 4000kg when fully loaded to GVM.
Mine tows an excavator on trailer (3500kg) every day for the last 7 years while carrying a 2500kg bobcat on its back…. Can’t say it’s ever felt underpowered.
I have a currant model. I’d be interested to see a towing test at gcm. Also try talking on hands free. Known fault with infotainment system. Mine is 5,5t gvm. Loaded constant near gvm fuel fig , 19ltrs/100. Speedo is way out. Replaced all springs after 1 week. Reliability is why I purchased.
My company got one of these as a work vehicle uprgading from a trayback single cab Hilux. It is better in basically every way imaginable when it comes to functionality and for not alot more in cost if youre comparing to a ute, a great tool for working.

lol you have the Aussie wave down to pat, Aero Guard will fix that.
Great job keep them coming
This was a refreshing change from the usual run of the mill Ute reviews, well done Paul!
I like this alot,,,,,great review Paul ❤
Definitely love to see some comparisons with some dual cab utes and towing comparisons
Keen to see a towing test at around 3.5 tonnes using the auto setup shown here, especially down steep hills for a braking analysis
Much bigger brakes than a ute
This is gold. Do this more often Paul 😅
Yes, standard off-road test!
We sell a good number of Stratos aftermarket suspension seats for these as the OEM seat isn’t the best.
very cool, always like it when a vehicle performs better than expected!
Have a 6 year old one of these with 470000kms still going strong with no major issues. Great litte rigs.
This is great upload! Mixing it up! I reckon more random ones like this Paul and team 👍🏻👍🏻
That was cool review, loved it!
Good review Paul. Thanks. Love to see how it compares to a Ute / landcruiser towing 3-3.5 ton caravan. Thanks.
That fly was so into you ❤
we have tons of these in the road here in the philippines its a pretty versatile truck we use it mostly on delivering wet and dry goods, construction equipment, and many more. wanna have to get one for my sound system rental in the future.
I need you on future truck reviews!
@CarExpertAus Always happy to help. my last piece of advice, if you are going to start reviewing more smaller trucks to save your back. open both doors first before flipping the cab as it act like a counterweight, makes lifting the cab easier. then just close them to bring the cab down.
Rate this video do some more like this 😂
I like the review you did back in the day of the Iveco daily 4x4
I like how they added "weight not verified"! LOL
Totally loved this review!
Yes I'd like to see you guys do a loaded and towing test against the a ute
paul great work reviewing trucks...love isuzu trucks
Two points no skid pan test and the last time Paul weighed 80kg was probably when he was 14.
If you are going over rougher terrain, the LMTV/FMTV (military surplus) is a great choice.
Shots fired.
Good on you Paul. Still a big car. And a credit to your reviews.
Your best test yet, Thankyou.
This is awesome, would love to see more truck and even bus reviews just for variety!
Some how you make swiping flies away look reasonably elegant 😂
Yeah Mate.. Do a clip on towing with the load on as well. Maybe the dual cab would be a good clip to do as well.
Please do more of this.
The flies are next level in this review 😂😂😂😂
Great video Paul. Thanks for making it. It has opened my eyes to something more practical than a ute; something I hadn’t considered before.
Always good to see something different in the mix.
Please do more of these types of videos
I think we need more truck videos, i loved this video
I am actually looking at a Ute/Trailer combo vs Light Truck purchase at the moment so this was a great review for me.
Nice review Paul. Love to see the 4wd version reviewed and towing a 3.5ton caravan. Cheers
You can get the Isuzu with a 3.0 or a 5.2 diesel. If I'm towing a heavy van, I know which one I'd be buying. 😎
Hey thanks a lot for this interesting video😊
My company got one of these as a work vehicle uprgading from a trayback single cab Hilux. It is better in basically every way imaginable when it comes to functionality and for not alot more in cost if youre comparing to a ute, a great tool for working.
Yes. Love to see a towing comparison with a ute. maybe totally max out the ute.
@CarExpertAus would love a Truck Expert channel (or just truck episodes)
Towing along a run (that is always the same)
*maybe a mini excavator?
Hauling a load
Decibels measured (guys are in these for hours - and the fatigue adds up)
Vibration experienced through the seat
Front wheel drive vs rear wheel drive in the towing and hauling demands, etc
Basically all the car license ones would be a hit
I think they account for 40% of all Aussie truck sales
Thanks for a great review, good clear and accurate information. Would love to see some more truck reviews ie Hino & Fuso etc
Very nice review paul hats off to you. Plz make more reviews of commercial vehicles, trucks like hino , nissan diesel so commercial buyers could also get advantage from your reviews. I hope you will consider my suggestion... Love from Melbourne... ❤❤
