Tolkien is high fantasy, and needs respect to be done right.. in which this series has none..whole narratives are changed up, characters switched, and re imagined , something Tolkien himself wrote passionately against.. we will not let this go! I know Lenny Henry has seen his share of racism, and I agree that people who take issue with racial casting are less than open-minded. I love the representation going on. the all-white middle earth of the movie irked me more than I thought it would, even though I've been re-reading the books since 1979... my issue with the series is that it takes established characters and totally alter their outlook, behaviour and manner. strong females aren't "woke"- it's reality. but this series fails Tolkien not in the casting, but the scripting and altered canon.

We remade jesus into a white guy, I don't see why you can't have a few black people as fantasy characters in a fictional show. I don't think he's talking about an individual. So I think if all black ppl went through your example, they'd come out looking like Ron Howard. For those of us who hate tokenism, it sorta becomes transparent when they can't fit us in without changing the rules established in the source material. There are already opportunities in the mythos to have black characters.
You seem not to be aware that the dwarves were not created by Iluvatar but by Aule the Smith and only got their breath of life after the first children (Elves) were sent to live underneath the stars…. They come into the world bearded, live underneath the mountains, have only one third females and so on. All this is woven into the creation myth of Tolkien‘s Arda…. and if some white guys from America think they can just go and plop a back woman dwarf with yellow eyes into this specific race without giving any sort of explanation of different houses or of a princess from a far away dwarven realm that married Durin for political alliances or some such… Then this isn‘t about racism but about the ‚sheer fucking hubris‘ of writers and producers who fail to grasp the depth of the world they are trying to work in. And they did it instead of putting in the work to establish their own black characters who would have needed a few generations of background, a new societal structure that hadn‘t been explained and a whole slew of new side characters…no, that‘s a bunch of extra work they just didn‘t bother to do… Easier to point at the fans and say RACIST…had always worked so far
