Osobola otya? Is my favourite and I consider myself the greatest philly lutaaya fan of all time. His four known albums Starting with Born in Africa and its five luganda songs in entebbe wala, tulo tulo, empisazo, nalikwagadde and nkooye okwegomba then his two English songs that’s born in Africa and voices crying out and finally the Swedish song En fest rinkeby. That album made him a global icon contrary to what most ignorant people are saying that it’s hiv that made him a star and btw it sold 60k copies in Scandinavia alone. Next he released his Tumusiinze album that had songs like ssekukulu, Gloria, tumsiinze, merry Xmas, katujaguze etc…. His third album was his aids album as people have come to know it bagiyita Alone and it had songs like nakazaana, likambo ya falanga, anifa, omukazzi omufumbo wa kitiibwa, emiziro, I have a dream etc…. And last but not least his legacy album that came out in 90 and it had songs like Diana, sirimba, sasaliza, muserebende, mukwano beera nange(mozy radio lweyakopa in his Jennifer song) etc…. He also had songs he never recorded like flora etc….. Am so blessed to have watched Philly twice
Best analysis. I had even forgotten most of his songs. I was listening to his songs this Xmas as they induce that sort of nostalgia back home preparing for Xmas so I blast those songs in my neighbourhood to get me in the spirit. We cannot even begin to think, not even think about thinking of comparing Philly to this boy. The people who say otherwise tebamanyi and they should do some research before looking at views on UA-cam. His songs are in so many platforms. RIP Philly.
The only happy thing I’ve felt in reading these comments, I’m learning that only boys are on those twitter sites and Facebook. People who take time to listen to these interviews are all sensible on you tube. Thank you for breaking up the issue so well.
Solid points from Mr Tshaka. Thanks for highlighting some of those great names like Philly Lutaaya, Billy Mutebi, Frank Mbalire, Moses Matovu, Sammy Kasule, Ssekyanzi, Dede, Mwambala, Ssebadduka etal... The current music generation has a general lack of respect of what it took for those people to make the music they made. Notoriety, popularity don't necessarily equate to musical brilliance.
A sober analysis from Shaka. I didn't want him to stop. Kyova olabba nze in Uganda nalemela ku Afrigo Band and a few like-minded musicians of the same caliber. Maddox Sematimba included. The rest, noise just.
Philly was a class above, he could be listened to by the whole family without shame but nowadays, a family can't sit together and watch or listen to music for majority of singers without embarrassment. Alex. Shaka thanks.
Imagine the comparison. We can excuse the apologists being mistaken as they’ve been born in times of synthetic music with auto tunes etc. Back then music was live, live shows, live singing no miming, pure voices where musicians played their instruments and sang their own songs and the songs made sense. Every person in diaspora can relate to the songs Philly sang about his life in Sweden that’s how relatable his craft was. We can accept Kenzo has been all over the place but when it comes to talent, please don’t insult Philly’s legacy. Bano abaana babaddeki?
Wow, Billy Mutebi sounds like an incredible musician who made significant contributions to Ugandan music. It's unfortunate that he remains relatively unknown to many people today. It's impressive to hear about his early beginnings as a young prodigy and how he rose to become one of the most sought-after guitarists in the country. His ability to compose timeless classics and play the lead guitar in many hit songs is a testament to his musical talent.
So am 28 obviously born after Philly's death and I just so happened to play Philly's song 'born in Africa' today. I have no doubt that song alone outweighs all of kenzo's songs put together. Btw, kenzo has got some nice songs am just not interested in playing them in my car much as am from the same generation. I think Fred Masagazi and kabuye Ssembogga are musical greats alongside the other greats. And I think Bruno k has got more views on youtube than Ssembogga and Zex Bilangilangi probably has more youtube views than Alex Mukulu! I prefer to call this the social media generation! Great wisdom from an elder Shaka Mayanja. BTW there's a saying that goes "those who forget their ancestors shall be forgotten by their offspring "Watching all the way from Johannesburg.....
Shaka, the show u talking about at nakivubo in 1989.i was at old Kampala in senior one .the stadium filled up and hundreds of people remained outside .in Kampala ,u could not pass any music shop without hearing his music playing .NAMAGEMBE of madox and BORN IN AFRICA are the songs ,that deeply still seated on people's hearts.
