It took less than three years from the first demo recordings Arlo Parks sent to BBC Music Introducing in 2018 to her award-winning debut album: “Collapsed In Sunbeams” (2021) catapulted the British singer-songwriter onto all the playlists of the major streaming platforms within a few weeks with tags such as “alt pop”, “neo-soul”, and “bedroom producer”. Today, the introspective poet with the breathy timbre is considered one of the visionary artists of her generation, puts on breathtaking shows at the Glastonbury Festival, and still knows how to stay true to herself and her DIY attitude. And with Arlo Parks, this is no empty phrase; rather, it is the modus operandi for the woman who now releases music on Transgressive Records but who nevertheless imbues her signature sound with an irresistible indie charm in terms of vocals, instrumentation, and production. With her new album, “My Soft Machine” (2023), she has proven with sentimentality as well as sovereignty, with stylistic certainty as well as eclecticism, that she knows how to realise and develop her very own style independently of the norms of the streaming era.
