Elvis recorded this song for his 68' Comeback Special.
Mac Davis was a humble, down to earth guy who never really let fame go to his head. He stayed true to who he was. Just a good ole' boy from Texas. Such a talented songwriter and singer. RIP Mac.
Mac Davis was greatly loved among his fans. Talented writer, great singer in his own right with his hit songs that anyone in the 70s recognized immediately. Mac was also a tv and movie star. He seemed to have it all and did because his fame never took away from being a good husband and Dad. God bless Mac, we thank God for putting his talents on this earth for all to enjoy. His song Memories says it all. Its what we hold with Mac Davis. Great memories of Mac forever.
Country star Mac Davis, who launched his career crafting the Elvis hits “A Little Less Conversation” and “In the Ghetto,” and whose own hits include “Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me,” died in Nashville on Tuesday September 29, 2020, after heart surgery. He was 78.

When it comes to movies, there is nothing better than the director's cut. When it comes to songs, there is often nothing better than the songwriter's original version. I suspected for 50 years there must be more to this song than the single verse of Elvis' version ( which I first heard on the live "Comeback Special" in 1968). The two darker verses make it a much more interesting song.

Oh I do love this song. He was around Elvis and Elvis gave a couple of lines for this song. I wish he had told the story. I heard him tell it in one of his videos.
Mac told Elvis why don’t you write the song. Elvis said no you write them, I sing them. When he got the song finished he called Elvis on the phone, sang it to him. Elvis loved it.
They had a great friendship. Mac was in Memphis one time and Elvis heard he was so he had someone call Mac-at his hotel and ask him if he wanted to go to movie night with him? So Mac did. He said he had fun. He loved macs song writing skills.
RIP my friend you left a Legacy like no other the great awesome songs you wrote are nothing more less than genuine he had a song called watching Scotty grow in which my brother got the name for his son scotty he was a bigger fan than me but I know every song he wrote god bless his family and watch over them and him too

I have always loved this song but I don’t think you can really appreciate it until you are midlife and look back on your life. I researched it and found Mac wrote the lyrics in one night for Elvis. Soon as the music starts the tears start. Then the lyrics. A timeless favorite.

Mac Davis and Elvis complimented each other. Mac's songs are very well written and very emotional, but he just doesn't have the voice that Elvis had to bring out the most from the song. Glad that Elvis got a chance to record some of these great Davis songs.

I've been loving Mac Davis since I was 10 years old and heard "Baby, Don't get Hooked on me." I had no idea what he was singing about... lol. Then he had his tv show on Thursday nights. Man, I never missed that show. The first record album I ever bought was a Mac Davis record.
do you remember, on his show, when he'd ask the audience to shout out song ideas? in a flash, mac would take those one or two word ideas, then write a quick tune. the result wasn't always good, but it was always fun to watch.

This is one of my favorite songs, and Mac was a true Music Man! He had it all, voice, ability to write, and play music, and the stage presence of a genuine, nice guy! He will be missed in the music world and beyond. Rest in peace, Mac Davis!

I've been to "Techness Tech" in Lubbock, like many of us have, including "Mac Davis" and "John Denver".
