    Definitely bring that zoom to Japan. In my opinion a 18mm, 23 mm and 35 mm are what you mainly need there. I once brought my 50 mm but barely used it or kept any pictures.
    I think a longer focal length is more challenging for European or Asian countries, because you don't have that space. Therefore it's quite limiting.

    • @helloharls_
      @helloharls_ 5 місяців тому

      I can't speak for Europe, but I found that the focal lengths that I used the most in Japan and Korea were 70mm and up. Every one is different though I suppose!

    Good call. I always use a zoom first, or even second time in a city. You get to test out different perspectives and get a feel for what works for the city and your style. Daytime, it might be day 3 before i crack a prime. For places I know well, primes are 90%. Zooms still help to find creativity if you are stuck.

  • @kevinliu4
    @kevinliu4 5 місяців тому +4

    I also prefer primes but only when I’m familiar with the subject matter and surroundings. For travel, the Sigma 18-50 has been absolutely clutch and is the first lens in my bag along with the XF33 f1.4. Another nice video 👍🏻

  • @hugevibez
    @hugevibez 5 місяців тому +2

    I was actually contemplating this lens for street photography. A lot of photographers get stuck on ideas that primes are more authentic than zooms or whatever, and sure for a beginner it's good to learn how to compose using a set focal length, but I think this exact lens' versatilty can offer a great benefit in the right hands. Lens compression is an often overlooked facet of focal lenght, but if you understand that and can choose a focal length based on the shot you are witnessing. You just have to make sure you don't become complacent and lazy in your composition, where you zoom to frame your shot instead of positioning yourself properly, but I think as long as you take a delibarate approach to photography that won't really happen.
    With enough caveats of course, there is always the right tool for the right job. Just trying to say you don't always have to abide by the rules if you understand why they are there in the first place.

    I brought my Sigma 18-50 on my X-T1 with me to Japan on my last trip and I do not regret it at all. I got some amazing shots, wide when I need, a little distance when I want to capture from across a street and the constant f/2.8 with its compact size made it so useful.

    Had this lens, but swapped it for a Fuji 23mm F2. It's a great lens, but I prefer primes to zooms, + the compactness, F2 & WR, made the decision easier. All in all, both are great lenses.

    My thought on Zoom lenses is rather simple. If you're travelling use even a kit zoom. The only time you should absolutely criticize zooms is with a professional gig that might require a crop in, and even then, I'd only exclude kit lens at that point, some of Nikon, Canon, and Sony's "prime zooms" are superb lenses. I've used the Nikkor AF-D 80-200 Two-Touch for a while now and it's arguably better than some primes. Don't let pixel peepers draw you away from zooms y'all. Great video as always.

    Firstly, I used to own Luminar and the performance used to be very poor, how is it today ? And on which computer ? I use RawPower App + Nik Collection ( also Darkroom App ) am very satisfied with it no subscription. Your videos are very interesting especially when they go through the cities, I myself use the Voigtländer 27mm/f2.0 Ultron this has a great character + the FX 23mm/f2.0 WR ( fixed width fan ) wish you continued success and for us users more great videos.

    I've admired all your films, particularly the Paris one. I started off with a Canon EOS 2000D and have now been drawn towards the world of Fuji. I have been admiring two cameras on MPB website and would dearly love some guidance/advice as to which one a beginner would benefit from. The two are the X-E4 (body only) and the X100V. I don't know which lens I should get. I would be very appreciative for any advice. Many Thanks. Bill.

    • @Mamo878
      @Mamo878 5 місяців тому

      Ok, I'll bite. For a beginner who doesn't really know yet what you like to shoot, flexibility is important. With a X-E4 and a used (pretty inexpensive) Fuji XF 18-55 you can cover _a lot_ of ground during the day (and dusk) and get outstanding photos.
      And for _really low_ light at night use your smartphone. And later when you get better you can get a cheap ($60 or so) faster (f1.4 to f2) Chinese manual focus prime lens to play around with and learn things like zone focusing for street photography and night photography.
