Nothing beats the sound of a healthy sounding American V-8. Doesn’t matter which manufacture made it, they ALL sound badass!!! Today’s ricer/tuner crowd has NO idea. Something that sounds like my Stihl weed-eater, no matter how fast it is , just isn’t the same.

Your point is very well taken! I have a 2001 BMW 330xi, 3 liter straight 6, w/5 speed (direct in 5th gear) and all wheel drive, that can easily do 140. It will still turn the same 0-60 times that the magazines were posting for the '64 GTO (6.5 sec.). There's a 37 year gap there and regardless what the magazines and the stopwatches say, "it ain't no Goat!!!" Is it more comfortable... definitely. Does it handle better... not a question. Does it have the appeal of an classic GTO that was the start of the muscle car era? There's no comparison but if I'm looking for a fairly quick, comfortable daily driver, I'll take my little Bimmer and keep the Goat in the garage for special occasions. No one with half a brain is going to mistake the appeal of one for the other.

@@MrGaryGG48 - I get what you’re saying. A BMW isn’t some kids front wheel drive Honda with a 4ft wing on the trunk, a Folgers coffee can size exhaust tip, a eBay ground effect kit, and 22 inch wheels that rub the fenders when it turns. I’m a car guy, so I like a lot of various cars, from various manufacturers. I love the M3, and M5 series BMW’s to. A classic muscle car isn’t practical for everyday commuting, so I’d drive the Beamer during the week to!!!

    • @MrGaryGG48

Chester, you made me laugh with the 4ft wing. I passed a young kid in a very shiny little Dodge Omni or some such econobox a while back on the freeway.
He had a set of articulated aluminum struts on the rear deck that supported the same 4ft wing you mentioned along with about $3,000 worth of wheels and tires. He was definitely "stylin" down the road and just as proud as he could be.
Actually, it was kind of neat seeing a young kid with something he built the way he wanted it. He was out on a sunny afternoon enjoying it. When I first came up behind it, it was a bit like the needle scratching on an old record but when I thought about it, whether I could appreciate his taste or not, wasn't the point. It was his car and his taste... odd though it may have been. That's OK. I'm glad he was enjoying it... much like I enjoy my ride, knowing it's not everyone's choice either.

That Thunderbolt Ford Fairlane with the 427ci side oiler engine was absolutely insane, way more than the 425hp the publicly published. It was pushing over 500hp, the car had dual quads and factory headers with a fiberglass hood. It was all business...lol

Glory days. Today we get over 700 HP from a 5.2 V8. More than 800 hp from a 6.2 V8 that's mild mannered enough granny could do a grocery run with it. And just for kicks, some dude put 2 turbos on his 8.4L V10 Viper and makes 2700 hp at the wheels max.

When I was a teenager my dads friend had a alcohol funny car. He also had a Hemi Dart that my dad called a factory drag car. He said it had an all aluminum body, Lexan windows, a 5-speed Lenco trans. The guy bought it strictly for the Hemi engine. One of my dads other friends bought the Dart and dropped a 10,000 RPM Cleveland in it with the Lenco trans behind it. He would launch at about 9000 RPM and pull the front tires off the ground. The guy worked in the west Texas oil fields and when they crashed in 1985 he pulled the Cleveland and Lenco and tires/wheels and moved off and abandoned the car and left it in a pasture full of weeds. I bet someone scrapped the car not knowing what it was! Sickening!

    I grew up in the passenger seats of a 1969 1/2 RoadRunner 440 6 Pak & a 1968 Charger 383 Magnum.
Todays idea of a muscle car is a $100,000 Demon.
Kinda feel bad for the kids today riding in the passenger seat of a V6 4 door Charger.

Yes, however the 1963 Pontiac Lemans 421 Super Duty did the big mill in a small car factory race program years before Mopar. Then that year in 1963 they (Pontiac) made America’s first ever documented Musclecar, the GTO, for the 1964 Model year and later. Thank God for Bucky Knutson, John Delorean and all the rest who were involved. Historically in the late 50,s to early 60,s Pontiac proved to all comers they were top. To me that speaks volumes and is far more badass over any maker still to this day, trying to catch up. 😉

The Pontiac you show is a 63, not a 62. My dad had a 62 Catalina Swiss cheese aluminum wonder ordered, 2 door post 421 dual 4s and a 4 speed. Mickey Thompson was building the engines at the time and unfortunately my dad ordered it too late in the year and couldn't get it. Dealer told him he'd be first in line for a 63 and he told them to stuff it, didn't want a 63. Now he kicks himself for not getting it, they are worth big $. Last one I saw, some years ago went across the auction block for almost a quarter mil. He also had a 61 Ventura that he ordered new, 425-A engine Wich is the 348 hp 389 also with a 4 speed. Currently he and my mom still have the very first car they bought together after almost 60 years of marriage,62 grand Prix, 303 hp 389 with the old roto hydromatic auto in it.

@@donkellar9816 I know the 240z was produced back in the early 70s.
The first car I ever worked on was back in 1977. It was a 1963 Z11 Impala with the 427 CID version of the 409 with 2x4-bbl.
The HEMI Dart in 68 was a low 10-second car in the 1/4 mile......put a decent set of slicks on it, and into the 9s it went.

Anyone who believes that these early muscle cars put out 375 to 431 HP probably also think that their push lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton motor on it produces 100 hp. Now, Mopar has the Dart and the 392 hemi (why not the 426), Chevy has the z06 Vette and ford has the Mustang. We should not forget the American Motors AMX with a 401 in it. I would really like to see the big 3 auto makes go at it again like they did back in the 1960's...but with the snowflake generation of pansies running these companies...it is most likely a pipe dream.

I'd take late 60's to 73 muscle over any of the but ugly cars of today, new stuff ya has some big up grades but the body style & rumble of 427, 428, 429, 440 ect were killer. i had a 69 Torino GT 428 had it 10 years started a family had to sell it.. should have sold my wife & kept the car

SORRY TO BE A WET BLANKET . BUT THE Z16 1965 WAS NOT BUILT FOR THE 1/4 MILE . IT WAS TO GET READY FOR THE 1966 CARS WHEN IT WOULD BE A TRUE RPO . AS FOR THE CAR IN THIS VIDEO IT'S NOT A REAL Z16 CAR . AS THE ENGINE HAS A VERY LUMPY CAM IN IT . PLUS IT DOESN'T HAVE A 396 ENGINE IN IT . CHEVY BUILT 201 OF THESE CARS 200 OF THEN WHERE HARD TOPS ONLY 1 WAS A CONVERTIBLE . IF YOU CAN FIND A REAL Z16 CAR IN MINT SHAPE IT WILL BRINK ABOUT $100,000 DOLLARS . BUT NOT THIS IT'S NOT A REAL Z16 CAR .
