“The bitch is stuck in a cage!” I love the outrage at the idea of people daring to sing the ending higher 😂

I would LOVE to see you break down the whole show. However, you'd probably have to split it into 50 videos and it would take 5 years lmao

You called me (a soprano) out soooo hard with that comment about changing the ending. That was such a powerful point you made that totally saved me the embarrassment of taking it up in my next upcoming audition!!! Thank you!!!!

The first video I clicked after this was Green Finch and Linnet Bird, and the Soprano changed the ending exactly like you said not to do, lol

I was just thinking today that you needed to break down another song from Sweeney Todd, but I never expected it to be Green Finch and Linnet Bird. I do appreciate you breaking down this song, as I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who find Johanna "boring" and not as interesting as some of the other principal characters in the show, but since the score fits with the more thematic elements of the narrative and the characters (which you explained very well in this video), it's clear that Johanna is, from the moment she's introduced, troubled, and is being held against her will in an "ivory tower" of sorts by a creepy old man and his subordinate, and just wants to go outside (which I'm sure Sondheim used as a reference when he wrote Rapunzel's theme for Into the Woods, because Johanna and Rapunzel, as characters, are very similar, but they face different obstacles and trials as their respective shows progress, and Johanna is actually one of the only principal characters from her show to survive, while Rapunzel is not.)

The decrescendo at 59 leading to her closing at piano is key to the ending as well. It should be exhausted and resigned.

As someone who’s working on this in acting the song right now, this is so helpful! Thank you for mentioning that option up, it never made sense to me whenever I’ve seen videos of it being done

You know it's funny because I was curious if any men had done a cover of this song but I found this instead. I'm not disappointed. I never knew I'd be so interested in how music is done. Thanks for this!!

This series is so awesome and informative! I love Sondheim but the exact nuances that make his work so brilliant are sometimes lost on me because I'm not fluent in sheet music. Thanks for helping people like me reach a new level of understanding and appreciation for these songs! (If you take requests, a breakdown of Pretty Women would be really cool, but I'll be there to watch whatever song you decide to break down next.)

This is awesome! The song is so great, and those hairpins at the beginning are so incredible.

I agree about the ending. It's beautiful that Harolyn Blackwell did that, but the sense of yearning that Betsy Joslyn had at the end with the normal ending stays completely with the story (see on YT she actually sings it in tune in 1979 instead of the wacky version from the televised tour)

Thank you so much; I loved this! This song is 100% not in my "type" but I do. not. care. and will sing the hell out of it anyways. It's so meaningful to me.

Hi! Which score book did you get this particular scoring from? So far I've managed to find 5 different ones but they don't always reference the source.

Harolyn Blackwell did it and it was gorgeous. Most sopranos can't do what she did.
