The one thing that makes my stomach turn about black activism today is the depiction of white people as monolithically racists and oppressive, either overtly through violence or passively vie compliance. Black activists seem to mostly be just like white racism in that they view the black and white racial groups as being intrinsically oppositional to each other regardless of individualism and their aim is for their group to win. Theres no way for alliance and cooperation between individuals of different races within that framework. Its not an end to racism, its a movement to establish a new kind of racism.
I recognize that you wrote this a year ago. I like that you have started asking difficult questions, but I also have to ask if you see the glaring hypocrisy in decrying what you consider the monolith characterization of white people by modern black activist, while monolithically characterizing black activism as inherently anti white. Overwhelmingly, black activism is about, as Mr. West describes, fundamental and transformative equality. Part of that comes from acknowledging that no one is completely immune to the effects of societal conditioning. You can't just opt out of a system that surrounds you, nor passively ignore it's power dynamics. To undo and rebalance requires action. Racism, patriarchy, sexism, ableism etc require us all to do self reflecting, to be vigilant of our own behaviors, and to endeavor to help the most vulnerable and disenfranchised of us.
deepeyes29 Both of your comments are very good. I think the OP’s comment still stands because what is fundamentally abhorrent about black activists today is that labeling all white people as inherently racist and not able to be redeemed from it is not historical truth. Dr West literally breaks it down in the video. We do NEED white people to make moral choices and the focus shouldn’t be on performative activism, “sit down and shut up” doesn’t work here. Change has to happen all around and it’s less likely when we are calling them demons and unable to re-think their moral stance. It’s like we don’t even want a coalition anymore and it’s ripping the country apart tbh
@@ninagrace-lee8323 Thanks for taking the time to respond. This is one of the common disconnects between black people and black activists, with potential white allies. While it may feel that black people are actually saying that, that has never been the case. Black people are looking for shift--that is to say, that white identifying allies would view and commit to fighting racism and white supremacy as white problems to be corrected, rather than a black problem with which to empathize. It can be frustrating to ask for justice, and to be repeatedly denied it. Fixing this cannot just be a black issue. And part of that means recognizing that the systems in which we live and work directly affect and inform us on individual level, and we have to be made aware of the lack of congruence between who we say we are, and what actions we actually take. I consider myself pro-woman ( which is not anti man) but I had to look at why I called my guy friends pussies and bitches at the gym when they weren't scrapping hard enough. And I felt personally attacked at what I initially perceived as anti male language--but then I realized that maybe 'not all men', but enough weren't doing the right thing; and that even in a small way, I might be contributing to that lack of safety. We all have a responsibility to address our blind sides. To say you disagree with the movement because the language is uncomfortable is natural, but what's the goal, progress or comfort? What a human conversation
Blacks w/ opportunity cannot abandon their people.
Notice the immense sense of pride Dr. Cornell west had mentioning a black woman from the 1800s who was a multimillionaire for doing absolutely nothing.
This is a major aside here, but did you know that Dr. Cornell West is in the Matrix sequels as one of the councilmembers in charge of Zion?
Holy shit I didn't know that.
@@noface24Give them a watch, you'll see. I got a super collector's edition with a TON of extras and a Neo bust. The audio commentaries are 1) a group of critics that hated the movies and 2) a group of philosophy teachers that loved it, INCLUDING Cornell West. When it gets to the council of Zion, he points himself out.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme leader of Iran says "There is no use in speaking of pain, without speculating about the cure". This quote could help American black community.
Pretending that cops don't tatget innocent blacks is ignorant. I have been targeted many times and all I can do is yes sir and no sir and hope I don't get hand cuffed or worse.
while I agree that there needs to be more of a targeted effort by black communities to tackle these problems from within, it's pretty difficult to make progress when you still face systematic discrimination and have been suffering for as long as they did.
For a second there I thought Joe Rogan was interviewing Grady from Sanford and Son
"The White Liberal differs from the white Conservative only in one way; the Liberal is more deceitful, more hypocritical, than the Conservative. Both want power, but the Liberal is the one who has perfected the art of posing as the Black Man’s friend and benefactor and by winning the friendship and support of the Black Man, the Liberal is able to use the Black Man as a pawn or a weapon in this political football game, that is constantly raging, between the Liberals and the Conservatives. The American Blacks are nothing, but a political football."
-Malcolm X, 1963
Yeah the 'white' liberal are jews though and actual white liberals are a tiny fraction in influence and power
@@npcnoticer So since "white" liberal Jews only make up 1-3% of the US population from the 1960s to now....then the rest or 97% of the US population...is now conservative.

DR. WEST ALWAYS SPOKE TRUTH! VERY IMPRESSIVE MAN. 🇺🇸✊🏿🇺🇸
Thank you again for having Dr. West on your show, Joe. Means a lot to me. I'm confident if we all had the knowledge of Dr. West this world would be a magnificently better place.
Most powerful speaker and thinker of our time. Love
Not many things more beautiful than a simple conversation.

The problem is what is that substantive transformation? During all of the protests and riots this summer, I have yet to see one actual list of items that need changed in order for people of all races to be truly ‘equal’.

@heroinhero69 wrong again libtard
How is a black man being the most powerful leader in our country for 8 years "symbolic"
It all starts at home . Parents need to be parents and teach their kids respect, morals and responsibility. No matter what colorr your skin is. It's not just black people that are sold an image thru pop culture. People need to separate themselves from their entertainment and come back down to reality.
He needs a Malcolm X like counter part

The life of John Brown would make a great movie- no need to make any changes to his story. Just tell it like it was. He was a man of enormous personal courage and integrity. Look at a photo of him. There is not a microgram of BS in that visage. No virtue signalling. A real man of action.

Dr West is such an engaging and enlightening speaker
West gets my respect because, while I disagree with him at times, he is ALWAYS willing to sit across the table from someone and have a honest, robust, and civil conversation about the attributes AND the shortcomings of the US. Not enough of that today.

Dr. West was my mentor as I went through grad school. He engages all people about democracy, humanity, and justice. His comments about August Wilson amd performance is what is happening right there with him and Joe Rogan. Imagining through dialogue, laughter, and candor a new vision of American democracy.
