I love this song... it evokes such wonderful memories! I remember as a child, Daddy would pack us up and move us North... it wouldn't be long before he moved us back home. I never understood that. Up North he always had a good job, food on the table... down home... well... let's just say we were hungry often. As an adult, I left home right after I lost my husband... I was barely 20 years old. There hasn't been a day pass that I haven't been homesick... I finally understand why my Daddy kept moving back... I shall forever be homesick for those beautiful mountains.

Wow, you made me cry, which is not all that easy. I grew up in Pike County, lived in Lexington for 15 years and there were plenty of times that I watched the mountains disappear in the rearview mirror on the Mountain Parkway. I'm back in Pike county now, and while I miss a lot of things about Lexington, Pike County is home.
I'm from Hatfield Ky and I left home in 1978, my family came from england in 1730's and settled in VA after Mose Stepp fought in the revolutionary war he came to wolf creek in martin County from there we spread all over eastern ky and western WV. I reckon I am kin to almost everybody in that part of the country. those hills will always be home to me but I learned early on there was no future there for me. The best thing I ever done was to leave those hills and move to Alaska. I have made a very good life in ALASKA I have worked every year since 1978 and own 3 businesses something i would never have done in pike county. Had i stayed in KY i would most likely a broken down coal miner living off a disability check. The best advice I can give a young person is to get a good education and several different trade skills then get the hell away from those hills run and don't look back there is nothing left there but misery.
Grew up in Virgie, on the side of Abner Mountain, sitting here south of Seattle with a tear in my eye, missing those East Kentucky mountains. Great song.
