One of my favorite passages about a life in Christ comes from 2 Peter 1:4-7 4. "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity." I love how the King James Version translates the Greek not just as love but, understanding the Greek word agape to mean "love in action", translates to "charity". It's like Peter is describing a Christian walk from being born again to being a wise elder in the family of Christ. You start with knowledge, add patience, etc. and ultimately come to charity. The highest attainment is the desire to set aside your fleshly desires and serve others. It's a beautiful goal.

I wasn't sure where you were going with the sola scriptura, of course if you are Protestant I can see how you might view the Church as one of the lesser gods. It is certainly the case that humans, including those governing Christ's church are fallen and all have sinned (Romans 3:23). And indeed, Luther was a man. But regardless of whether we view Peter as the rock or as an important disciple in the history of the faith, we are united in these discernments and trials. There's certainly no shortage of lesser gods. Indeed we should expect many more of them in the times to come. In the Catholic church we often describe our battle in terms of the three enemies of the soul: the flesh, the devil and the world. Just wanted to give a Catholic perspective. God bless you.
i view humans as the single authority over what happens to us, and our souls, we have churches and scriptures and all that, but what it boils down to is what we are doing, who we are following, and we should be constantly trying to move past our sins, to repent is the sacrifice hes talking about, as hes referencing a lifestyle choice. Sacrifice your current sins, repent, and you will be with the one true god, but to not repent is giving that single authority control over an aspect of your life.
