Driving a long distance from Dover to Gatwick, one late November afternoon, in the dark,, after delivering a hire car to a customer, my mate was quiet, missing his family in far- off South Africa. I put on a Cat Stevens cassette, & he started singing. The rest of the journey, was a joy, with both of us, giving it some welly, on every track, without needing to see the lyrics!

People forget how uniquely talented and expressive he was in the midst of his time and era. Very few can match his vocal elegance, lyrical magic and technical prowness. His music moves me and inspires me to this day

I was madly in love w/Cat Stevens back in the day. Watching this gorgeous man sing this gorgeous song and even, by God . . . The guitar is gorgeous. I'm transported backwards in time again to the bedroom with his posters on the wall, his face greeted my day and ended my nights. Big damn sigh. :)

What a nice story. He was like a rol model to me. I was so impress by his presence and music. I grew my beard and hair, I took a guitar, learned some of his songs and sang them in high school, there are still old classmates who remember me for that.

I was 19 years old when I heard this song. I was going through the most painful period of my life. ( I am on my husband’s account to clarify) I had just had my first child, was unmarried, and back in 1970-71, most young women were shamed into giving their child up for adoption. This song, though I know it was most likely written for a woman, became my personal song of grief. I have since worked through all of the pain and suffering of losing that child, but listening to it today, at 69 years old, still evokes loss, suffering, tears and brokenness. It was my healing song. 😢💔

Following Cat Stevens since the beginning has been an incredible, rewarding experience. Being a witness to his pain of the political process was frustrating. First hearing about him leaving the musical arena was difficult. There has never been a time when his music was depleted by his interest in replacing war and hate with peace and love. How very fortunate for us to be able to revisit his music in this forum. Is it possible to forget our own prejudices and just appreciate this man?

This song seems almost mystical to me. I first listened to it (and the album it was on) the summer I turned 14. I just can't explain the mystical sense I get when I hear this song now, although the romantic meaning has faded over the years. And back then, it was just his voice I heard, no videos available (although there were a few pictures on the album). It's the pure mystical music that still gets to me.... wow.

My story ... this takes me back to spring break 1972, leaving behind a long & cold winter at school in Connecticut. I met a beautiful girl from U. of No. Carolina named Patty on the beach in Miami. Walking on the beach DAY 1 with my guy friends from school we all saw her at the same time. She was with her friends. I moved quickly, and we hit it off completely. We listened to Cat all the while we were there on break. We slept only a little every night ;>) inside of a cool van that was parked on the lawn of the house where me and my buds planned to stay in Coral Gables. Oh man, I could not have dreamt something better. Perfect everything was she. Where's a time machine to take me back?

I LOVE this song so much - I have for 30 years. What I find most revealing about this video, though, is that is shows that Steve - not guitarist Alun Davies - is playing lead guitar. Alun is playing rhythm guitar! Even more amazing, particularly as I always found this a challenging song to play - and he's playing it perfectly, while he sings so expressively. He was truly a musical genius.

This song takes me back to 1972-73. I had been playing guitar for a couple of years and played in the local church folk mass group. Cat Stevens was a big influence on everyone. There was a friend from school in the group who played many of his songs and even looked a bit like him. I learned so much from trying to play Cat's songs. I've been playing guitar for over 50 years now and finally I learned how to play this song. His guitar is tuned to an E chord, no wonder it was so hard to work out. LOL

Passed out from qualudes and slept thru the concert. One of the biggest regrets of my life. Life lesson...don't do drugs! For those wondering if this is a live or studio version, it's not the studio version....at 2:18 he sings `and live at night and dream' . The actual lyric is `and sleep at night and dream'. A lifetime ago this song described an episode in my (then) young life with 100% accuracy. I managed to get myself very hung up on a girl to the point where practically every plan for my future included her. Alas, she concluded she otherwise. When I finally got it through my head there would be no Patricia (sigh) in my life I listened to this song frequently. It was like torture on one hand yet described my life so completely at the time. WHaERE did all Comac David's comments go, deleting mine, as well, most of them anyways, whaaaaa???
....and the turnaround was a natural reaction I believe, because if NOT him, that would have been cruel, she panicked not knowing...

Very thoughtful statement. I was 5 in 1970 and loved him. I'll never forget seeing the smile on my dad's face when he listened to him sing "Morning has broken." Dad would sing "Wild World to me." I'll be listening to Cat Stevens when I'm a very old woman.....love him...timeless.

The first concert I ever saw was this man at Massey Hall in Toronto in 1974. It was amazing. He sang this song and many other favorites. What a concert and what guitar playing! Always remembering the days when Cat's lovely tunes were on the radio in the car all the time.Happy New Year Youssaf!
