Served in the Hungarian army as a conscript. This rifle was amazingly stable and accurate at the range. Just a stock AK clone, nothing fancy, but it beats laps on the AK-63D, the other AK variant we used to have. The army doesn't have them any more, they were passed to the police, and some Arab countries, including Palestine and Iraq. However, it's not a "paratrooper" weapon, this is a common misconception! The name AMD means "Automata Módosított Deszant", Automatic Modified "Dessant". The latter is a Russian word, and it means riflemen who disembark from a vehicle to fight. Paratroopers were called "aerial dessant" in Warsaw Pact terminology. For some reason, the Hungarians never called infantry "dessant", but we widely called paratroops "aerial dessant", now as a loanword from Russian. Thus the word "dessant" gained currency as a term for paratroopers, and paratroopers only. In fact, the AMD was meant for traditional "dessant", disembarking from a BMP or a BTR. There lies the answer to "why the AMD-65 exists". It's a weapon with a short barrel and a foldable stock. It's much more convenient in the cramped space of a BMP. Also fun fact: it's actually designated "AMD-65/5". The 5 isn't a version number: it means that a soldier would receive 5 magazines with it. One goes into the rifle, and four into a magazine belt.

I think Matt said the deer are drawn to the gunfire because of the amount of food he's shot on the range. Hitting those steel target is literally ringing the dinner bell.
My first AK was an AMD65. I still have it. Bought it in 2007 when I was 22 and I love it. It came with one 20 round mag, 2 30 round mags, and a 75 round drum. I also have a Romanian AK I built off a parts kit, by my 65 is by far my favorite!
Both my Granddad, and Dad were in the Hungarian military, and I love listening to their stories about their service. Both of them worked as truck drivers for arms transportation, and were issued with AMDs as well.
Y'know, if you've got enough AK variants of one make like Hungarian or Yugos or anything like that, it'd be a really cool video idea to compare them. See what all the different models were specified for and what the thinking was for each design- it'd be really neat to bunch all the sister models together.
Not just Jorge, the few civilians we see on reach are Hungarian, and I think the ODST trailer also… mainly used Hungarians lol. Hungary can into space, apparently, and they REALLY hate the covenant
As a hungraian who's bloodline served: great-grandfather in ww2, grandfather in the cold war (he was a tank commander so he used the AMD a lot) my father only served a year but used the AMD. My grandfather was a second lieutenant in the Hungarian People's Army. He was born in 1955, conscripted in 1976. He served with the gun all through his military carrier along with the PA-63 what he hated. But he adored the AMD-65. He said it was powerful and accurate enough for what it was needed to be. As for the PA-63 he said you were more accurate with throwing it rather than shooting it. So yes, the AMD-65 holds a special place in my heart too. And so does it in mg grandfather's heart.
Awesome video! I alsonlove that on Matt's range, the deer just wander around knowing you are not out there to shoot them. They have not a care in the world. Matt has left lots of food around for them to eat. 😊
As a hungarian guy with a dad who was a soldier and shared me experiences with the Amd (one of them is that he literally burned down half of the range because tracer bullets were inaccurate at that time and it blasted into the dry grass) it feels good that you have a love for them too.
My friend got a bunch of no name early pattern ak mags at a surplus store once on the super cheap and we both assumed they were cheap as crap norinco garbage, but we recently did some digging and found out they are actually original hungarian ak steel magazines that have just been beat to death because they were probably in 15 different warzones in the balkans before showing up here in 2006, and then this video came into my feed, neat, thanks brandon!

I've been waiting YEARS for this video. I absolutely love my AMD-65. Thank you so much! Mine was given to me as a christmas present about 13 years ago. ITM arms receiver, a few tapco parts here and there.
The Red Dot story reminded me of something I did in my younger days. I bought a Tasco red dot for 30 bucks and a receiver mount adapter for my Mossberg 500 for shooting slugs, because the barrel on it had a misaligned bead sight, and the mount and dot were half the cost of a new barrel. It survived maybe 4 months before it lost it's ability to hold Zero.
@@eljefeamericano4308 I was finally able to afford picking up a new barrel roughly a year after that Tasco crapped out. Now, that Ol' 500 is my go-to HD firearm. I've Christened it the "Burgular's Worst Nightmare" I've owned the thing for 11 years, and had ONE failure. Extractor Claw had oil on it, and didn't catch the rim of an expended cartridge. Other than that, nothing. Mossberg 500's are tanks.
I bought a cheap $30 red dot and put it on a 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action. Surprisingly it held zero for the first 50 rounds. I've since upgraded to a proper Vortex scope. I still have the red dot for 22s though
I’m happy for you having that piece of personal history and nostalgia in your collection now, but I’m more impressed that Matt’s range has inoculated the local woodland critter population to the fear of neither people nor gunfire. Hunting season has to be boringly easy around his place.
They are probably conditioned to come when bullets are fired. It usually means food for example watermelons or other things Matt blows up on the regular.
The AMD-65 was the first AK I ever built. I got the parts kit for my 21st birthday and soon bought all the tooling and put it together. The only thing I did to it was add an AMD65TECH cheek riser to it to make it easier to get a sight picture. I've ran that gun in a couple of carbine matches and it is by far my favorite 7.62 AK variant.
My first rifle I ever bought with my own money back in the day when things were chill was a WASR-10/63 UF. I saw that thing in the gunshop and I fell in love with it and had to have it. I saved most of my money from working on my local farm and went and bought her. Throughout the years I bought the proper dong for it but couldn't find a matching looking gas tube handguard so I went with the cheese grater. To this day it is one of my favorite and most cherished firearm.
My only AK is a WASR-10/63 with wooden furniture (except the stupid black plastic US grip). It's a little rough looking in terms of finish, but I kind of expect an AK to look like that, and I don't even know how much better a Russian one is, never held one personally. But it has worked flawlessly since I got it. It will drill clay pigeons at 50 yards without any issues, and I don't really feel like I need it to do any better than that. I think it was $450 in the local shop in like 2007. I don't even shoot much any more, it's to damn expensive, but it's nice to know that I have it.
@justforever96 The finish on mine isn't pristine, but it isn't overly worn especially for a military parts kit. I had issues with my front sight being canted so bad that I couldn't zero it. I just knocked the gas block pins and rotated it a bit. After I did that I could zero it and hit my steel silhouette target at 87 yards all day. A lot of the older WASRs had weird problems here and there. I have held a few russian AKMs and they look amazing and fit and finish are great. The import restrictions just made them annoying. I wish I bought the Saiga I held a few years ago and just went through the pain of converting it to a standard looking AK. I wish I had more money back in the day and stockpiled more 7.62x39 because I never shoot my AKMs anymore because it costs the same or more as 5.56 now.
It's like the deer living in the area the danish military use for artillery range and crawl pit, the deer just moves a few hundred feet in no hurry, then the leopards shoot for awhile and then the deer take over again 😂
So you probably won’t see this but 2 years ago I got my first AK at 16 years old after working fast food for months. I actually watched your video on AK buyers guide and bought a WASR-10. It’s been an amazing rifle and was my first centerfire rifle so thanks.

Greetings from Hungary, Brandon! Happy to see this one. FYI the AMD has been phased out from the army. I've seen some police units armed with that in the last 10 years, but probably they don't use it anymore due to the recent Scorpion EVO2 procurement.
I love the deer in the back we have the same on my property during hunting season. I have a small group of females' who know it's safe at my place so they hang out all season on my land . the ironic thing is 3 seasons ago they brought a flock of turkeys with them so now I have turkeys running around during turkey season .
Brandon, i wholeheartedly thank you for feauring this beauty. Brings back a lot of memories from the times when i was a young fella, drafted into the Hungarian Army, and this was our issued weapon. I learned to fire an automatic weapon for the first time, and this was it. I can not say anything bad about it, mainly because you mentioned all of them in the video! I kinda missed the tear-down part, but its understandable, since theres nothing new in the inside compared to a standard AK-47. Was fun to tear it apart over and over, and clean it, not because it required it or anything, but because the officers commanded the whole squad to do so, in our "free-time" lmao. Good ol' days my oh my😂
My dad was in the hungarian army back in the day and (when we had a little commie influence as a mandatory 2 year service or something like that) and he told me stories about the AMD-65, he loved it. And now it was good to see in action, and it was also good to hear a good review from the AK Jesus himself, thanks!
It's hard to make an AK really bad. Ugly is very possible of course, but they don't come with a whole lot you could fuck up to begin with. The stock would probably be something that gets very uncomfortable very fast. But you have to do something if you want a lighter and more compact gun
Somehow no matter how rare the weapon is brandon has it. Amp-69,type 1 model ak,VSS vintorez hell i wouldn’t be surprised if he has a gyrojet carbine he’s hiding from us with ammo keep up the work i love seeing stuff like this.
Being hungarian, I love the AMD. I know there are mixed feelings about it, but lets not forget, it was NOT designed to be your main assoult rifle. As you said, it was designed for paratroopers, tankers, for recon units and allso officers. The soldiers who used them, moastly liked them, as they were smaller and easier to carry around than a normal ak. My father back in the day had no problem shooting it accurately. I think he still has 1 live round somewhere as a memory from those days. As this is Europe, I could only get an airsoft version, but at least I have it. They say these were built very good quality.
You'd think all the gunfire that range gets would scare them all away. They either have no self-preservation instinct or just have the largest lack of fucks eve recorded.
Great video! As a former user by the Hungarian law enforcement, let me add my two cents... Developed as a compact AK-version for the Hungarian army. It was not generally issued for the army troops. (They used the wooden stock - and foldable stock versions later - of the AKM.) It was only issued for special recon and paratropper units mainly. (In the Cold War-era no sub-machineguns were officially issued. Hence there was a demand for a compact CQB weapon solution) Later the former socialist governments militia (the Eastern Block equivalent of the National Guard) was equipped with them in high numbers. Law enforcement units were the next. (It was in much higher numbers issued like the AMP-69 with the grenade launcher capability - they stayed always a rare sight) Intended as a makeshift solution for the role of the shotgun-submachinegun weapon category, which was completely missed from the arsenal (apart from a few spec. units: They had the VZ-61 Scorpion, later mini Uzis, and some prison guard units had very few shotguns). Hitherto this 7.62x39 cartridge with its unneccessary, army-level penetration is totally unsuitable for urban areas, where are many civilian bystanders to endanger. (As a benefit, makes most body armors useless...) Thankfully this weapons seen very little use, so with luck you can grab almost new condition pieces, despite the older age, from cold-war storage sale. Pros: - Rugged, reliable, low maintenance need - Lighter and cheaper than most of the AK´s - Most parts are compatible with the AKM - The muzzle break is really effective Cons: - The plastic parts feels cheap and slippery - The general workmanship lacks a lot (typical cold-war mass production, function over everything, production marks everywhere). - The front grip angle is anti-anatomical (but there is a reason- the arched magazine required the space) - lack of bayonet mount points Keep up the good work! ;)
not even hungarian, but still happy that they are acknowledged, even more beacuse "Polak, Węgier, dwa bratanki, i do szabli, i do szklanki/Lengyel, magyar - két jó barát, együtt harcol, s issza borát"
I own one. The muzzle blast is spectacular, the wire stock is not for precise shooting, and with no top hand guard, be careful where you put your hand. It is ultimate concealable and works best with a 20 round magazine.
Hello from Hungary! Great video, glad to see you having fun with a Hungarian firearm. I also own a Hungarian AK, mine is an older model, a milled receiver FÉG AK-55 (unlike yours mine isn't full auto).
As a Dutch, I have been in Afghanistan in 2008, a Afghan police station, had a few guys with the AMD, full of glitter flower stickers! What a wonderful sight that was!
Hey Brandon! Thank you so much! I’m so happy to see this “legend” from our country. 😅 Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to shoot with it at the Hungarian Defence Forces(Magyar Honvédség) I served a little time as a member in a mortar crew. We have AK63Ds,P9RCs(sometimes 😂) and 82mm mortars
My company imported a few AMD-65s about 20 tears ago and had to convert them into parts sets. Most were new guns, all were packaged in the original Hungarian crate and inner packaged in sealed plastic bags with accessories. We did take a couple of parts sets and as an SOT remanufactured them. They are indeed a compact firearm and quite handy, Muzzle blast is, as you noted, somewhat pronounced. The biggest issue that I have with them is if carried at the ready position for any length of time you will want to wear a glove (if right handed) as the button for the stock release will dig into the first knuckle of the thumb on your trigger hand. The screw slot doesn't help the situation in that regard.
If you thought your mods were dumb, I bubba'd the hell out of mine. I replaced the trunnion with a regular AKM one so I could put a Magpul stock on it, replaced the dust cover with a TWS rail, and modded a polymer handguard to replace the UTG one that came with the gun. When I got mine it also came with a weird funky tactical pistol grip. Eventually found out the whole receiver was bent so the front end of the gun was going away right. Replaced the receiver and decided that I would restore it as well. So it's back to normal just I need to put a sling loop on it but I haven't been able to find one
I now want you to make the Trashnikov, shovel handle for a stock, bicycle handle pistol grip and forward grip supplemented by several tourniquets wrapped around it. all the stops to look like something built by a methed out raider from fallout.
My favorite AK & addiction was Tapco's catalog full of AKMD 65's at unbelievable prices back in the day. I got so burned out from building them. That I still have 2 of the kit gun's I ran into in a recent move. They were Tapco's lowest priced kit gun's back in the 90s. Generally selling from $65-$69.99, or the handyman special of 5 for $250. They were such a novelty AK that they were hot sellers @ twice the price for less gun! Lol And to expidite the assembly who needs rivits, we just spot welded the crap out of the receivers onto the trunnions. Making for some slick sexy smooth sided AK's that never fell apart. The 30rd mags were not a problem just grind the lip off the rear of the fwd grip & it was rock & roll all day. And do stuff some heat resistant wool into the barrel gaurd for added comfort. And that was my contribution to world peace in the 90s. That was back when a guy could still buy a sardine can of ammo at $45-50 for 1000rds. And that was a lot of all day fun on target
My first AK was a Polish Tantal 5.45. Put the Magpul plum furniture kit on it and rigged a handguard retaining pin since it's slightly different than AK standard. Love that thing.
Back when AK parts sets, (hated the term kit), were inexpensive and came with barrels plus ALL the fire control parts, I purchased many. The AMD65 was the first I built. Made my own bending dies and my own flats and rails from sheet steel. Back then nearly every parts set I got was numbers matching and appeared unissued. Point being the AMD65 was and is the most fun to shoot with a group. The two most common questions are, what is that and are you done shooting yet? It is obnoxiously loud to others on the firing line.
My first AK was an AMD 65. It was really light for me. Traded it for a milled receiver under fold. I changed the muzzle brake on it to a Razer one, it shoots great and on target at 100-200 yrds
Hey Brandon, been a fan for a couple of years now. Ive always been an “AR” guy since its what im most familiar with. A couple of months back i bought my first ak, a zastava m70 and i am in love, keeping it with the wood furniture for now, grabbed a few steel mags and got my hands on a drum mag too, not too easy living in the caribean but totally worth the hassle. Love this rifle 🫶🏻
That was my first AK as well and I absolutely loved it. Lightweight compact and solid the fire ball really is spectacular its not a trash gun by any stretch.
Yes when I was soldier (at about 80s) we had used and applied this Gun. We loved it! It was easy to clean, carry and shot. Almost forgotten, this AMD65 is rather accurete to hit the target..
Really cool that he kept it. I bought my first gun at 17 in a Target parking lot. Told the dude i was 18, walked away with a Gen3 Glock 26 for $350. Good times
This was also my first AK, about the same age. Something advantageous about the stock is that it allows the easy use of a gas mask or NVGs, this carbine with a can and an LAM would be great for CQC in the dark.
I love my AMD-65 it's my first ever AK too and probably my last. It's the smoothest action I've ever felt in an AK, It's so buttery smooth i can rack and cam the bolt without the recoil spring using just my pinkynail. 3000rnds and it still barely closes tight on the CIP go gauges. That being said i had to redo the furniture, I have a magpul moe grip and stock, and a Midwest Universal barrel clamp front handguard... The muzzle brake is super flashy.
So, para cord to boost the cheek weld and a BSA red dot for optics. Then Brandon calls out the tactitards. Classic. Btw, my son says the deer on the trail is deaf from having been born and raised on Demolition Ranch.
I trained with it in the army. We used to wrap the sling around the stock and that way it was kind of comfortable. Still, i like the 63D better, but just a little bit. My eternal love belongs to the SVD-M.
Something that me and Brandon have in common. Our first AKs we built on AMD 65 parts kits. Only difference is is that I stamped my receiver out of an old windmill blade lol
@@Jason_556It held up pretty good for a while, but I eventually got rid of the windmill blade receiver. It's sitting in my workshop right now getting ready to be rebuilt on a Morrissey

The Red Dot story reminded me of something I did in my younger days.
As a HUngarian I am very happy that you Brandon finally covered something like that. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work.

It's hard to make an AK really bad. Ugly is very possible of course, but they don't come with a whole lot you could fuck up to begin with. The stock would probably be something that gets very uncomfortable very fast. But you have to do something if you want a lighter and more compact gun

Great video!
As a former user by the Hungarian law enforcement, let me add my two cents...
Developed as a compact AK-version for the Hungarian army.
It was not generally issued for the army troops. (They used the wooden stock - and foldable stock versions later - of the AKM.)
It was only issued for special recon and paratropper units mainly.
(In the Cold War-era no sub-machineguns were officially issued. Hence there was a demand for a compact CQB weapon solution)
Later the former socialist governments militia (the Eastern Block equivalent of the National Guard) was equipped with them in high numbers.
Law enforcement units were the next. (It was in much higher numbers issued like the AMP-69 with the grenade launcher capability - they stayed always a rare sight)
Intended as a makeshift solution for the role of the shotgun-submachinegun weapon category, which was completely missed from the arsenal (apart from a few spec. units: They had the VZ-61 Scorpion, later mini Uzis, and some prison guard units had very few shotguns).
Pros:
- Rugged, reliable, low maintenance need
- Lighter and cheaper than most of the AK´s
- Most parts are compatible with the AKM
- The muzzle break is really effective
Cons:
- The plastic parts feels cheap and slippery
- The general workmanship lacks a lot (typical cold-war mass production, function over everything, production marks everywhere).
- The front grip angle is anti-anatomical (but there is a reason- the arched magazine required the space)
- lack of bayonet mount points
Keep up the good work! ;)

As a person from Hungary i'm happy that there is a video about my favourite variant of the AK

Lol
And to expidite the assembly who needs rivits, we just spot welded the crap out of the receivers onto the trunnions.

A couple of months back i bought my first ak, a zastava m70 and i am in love, keeping it with the wood furniture for now, grabbed a few steel mags and got my hands on a drum mag too, not too easy living in the caribean but totally worth the hassle. Love this rifle 🫶🏻
Zastava AKs are so cool. Nice to hear about that
Wish I was in TX and could vote for this guy
Same here. I’m just too far away to vote for him.
10:42 deer in the background
Awesome piece of equipment! Did you notice there was a deer wandering around behind you after all that blasting!? At 11:28
It freaked me out.
I was looking for this comment.
That deer in the background @10:04 not giving a single fuck lol
That was my first AK as well and I absolutely loved it. Lightweight compact and solid the fire ball really is spectacular its not a trash gun by any stretch.
First one for me too
Yes when I was soldier (at about 80s) we had used and applied this Gun.
Good times
AFT drones are en route to your location. Make sure to secure the doggos.
Somewhere a liberal just cried
They never stop crying tho😂
Cool
*Progressive
@@personreanimation I’m very liberal about gun rights. I like them in generous amounts and I believe in maximizing personal freedoms 😂
Good.
Something that me and Brandon have in common. Our first AKs we built on AMD 65 parts kits. Only difference is is that I stamped my receiver out of an old windmill blade lol
Dang! How did that hold up? Did you heat treat it?
Didn't expect to see you here.
@@Jason_556It held up pretty good for a while, but I eventually got rid of the windmill blade receiver. It's sitting in my workshop right now getting ready to be rebuilt on a Morrissey
@@Jason_556and yes I heat treated it. In a wood stove. Lol
The leather jacket goes well with the theme.
